The Sudden reconciliation amazes me alot.. I knew from the onset that these ladies were only trying to create buzz about the movie.there was no serious quarrel amongst them. Thats the power of social media. U can easily deceive folks and make noise about nothing tangible. |
These are hard times for the country |
Times are hard |
The hunter is now the hunted. Despite this story, i think the judiciary is the least corrupt of all arms of government unlike the executive and legislature. The ongoing anti graft campaign in Nigeria is a typical example. |
Lai Mohammed tasks media on N1.34trn loot From Ikenna Emewu Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, yesterday explained how the Federal Government arrived at the N1.34trillion stolen public fund it announced last week. At a media chat with editors and Bureau Chiefs in Abuja, Mohammed, who was challenged to release the list of the 55 looters and how the government arrived at the figure, rather tasked the media to embark on its investigation and add the missing ends. He noted that within the period the Federal Government reviewed, 2006 – 2013, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed criminal proceedings against 55 persons that held public posts and the total amount involved was the figure the government announced. Although the minister admitted that most of those accused or charged by the EFCC are still facing trials and the allegations of monies stolen by them not yet proven, he still noted that the revelation was part of the victories the government has gained in the war against corruption. He also derived validity of the announced persons and money from the popularity of the figures in the media, to an extent that even the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, quoted same as the sign and extent of criminality in Nigeria’s public sector at the just-concluded World Economic Summit (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. He charged the media to sustain the support for the government in fighting corruption, saying the government has made a huge success of positioning anti-crime crusade at the front burner of national discourse awareness. He said the development is already a big success on its own, even with a vow that the government cannot stop in its efforts. Mohammed also assured that, “the paid media blackmail, propaganda, attacks and other counter-efforts by affected persons are ways corruption fights back. But all these are not enough to stop the government because that is the most important task the government must sustain. “The revelation and its popularity all over the world has rattled the enemies of the country involved in the Dasukigate scandal into hack writing, media attacks and other antics. We therefore, call on Nigerians not to fall for their tricks and keep supporting the Federal Government in the war against the culture of looting and impunity. “Another assurance this government will always give the people of Nigeria is that its only focus is not just fighting the few corrupt Nigerians. It has been part of the propaganda of the affected persons that this government has nothing else to offer the people apart from fighting corruption. “That is not true because the government must keep all its promises to change Nigeria for the better. But it has to start from the most pressing issue, which is corruption and will later touch on all other issues of national importance the same way it fought the insecurity caused by Boko Haram till its present state,” he explained. |
Fisayo Falodi and Olaleye Aluko There was pandemonium at the Omole bus stop on Oba Ogunnusi Road in the Ojodu area of Lagos State on Tuesday after a traffic warden, Sunday Charles, engaged in fisticuffs with a motorist, identified only as Kingsley. PUNCH Metro learnt that Kingsley, who was stopped by a team of traffic wardens at the junction, was allesgedly beaten up by Charles for refusing to part with N50. The motorist lost three front teeth during the brawl. Our correspondents gathered that Kingsley and some people in the bus manhandled Charles and threatened to drag him to the Ojodu Police Division for the assault on the driver, before some pedestrians advised them against reporting the incident. One of our correspondents observed that at about 11.30am, Charles, who was with three female officers and four officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, had stopped Kingsley’s vehicle at the junction. The traffic warden allegedly demanded N50 from the motorist before he could let him go. It was learnt that trouble, however, started when Kingsley claimed that he had earlier given N50 to the warden, adding that he would not give him another until evening. Charles, who allegedly insisted on collecting the money, was said to have dragged Kingsley down from the vehicle and punched him in the face, during which the motorist’s three teeth fell off. It was gathered that Kingsley held the warden and demanded medical treatment. A large crowd was said to have gathered at the scene and tried in vain to separate the warden and the motorist who held each other’s clothes. Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Kingsley said he refused to allow Charles to go because he had injured him. He said, “I am a commercial driver. The warden stopped me about 8am and I gave him N50. So, I was surprised when he asked me again. “I was going towards Agidingbi Road when he stopped me. He demanded another N50. I refused, saying he should wait till evening. He dragged me from the bus and started punching him on my face. “My mouth started bleeding. I realised three of my front teeth had fallen off. So, I grabbed his uniform. People bundled him inside my vehicle and said I should take him to the police station. “His colleagues and LASTMA officials stood away during the altercation because he did not listen to them. I suspect the warden was drunk because of the way he dragged me from my vehicle.” A pedestrian, who was a witness, Abiodun Dada, told one of our correspondents that other traffic wardens and LASTMA officials, who were embarrassed by Charles’ action, later calmed down enraged motorists not to protest against the incident. He said, “It was the warden who first hit the motorist. He punched him on the mouth and yanked out some of his teeth. It was the blood gushing from the driver’s mouth that attracted pedestrians. We later discovered it was an argument over payment of N50. “If not for the wardens and the LASTMA officials who begged angry motorists, the gathering could have turned violent.” www.punchng.com/traffic-warden-yanks-out-motorists-teeth-over-n50/

The Gambia has been declared an
Islamic republic by President Yahya
Jammeh who said he wanted to
further distance the West African
nation from its colonial past, UK
Guardian reports.
The tiny, formerly secular country joins
the ranks of other officially Islamic
republics such as Iran and Afghanistan.
“In line with the country’s religious
identity and values I proclaim Gambia
as an Islamic state.
“As Muslims are the majority in the
country, Gambia cannot afford to
continue the colonial legacy,” Jammeh
said on the state television.
The Gambia’s population of 1.8 million
people are 95% Muslim. Jammeh said
citizens of other faiths would still be
able to practise.
Jammeh, an animated orator who has
earned the reputation for making
surprise declarations over the course
of his 21-year presidency, pulled the
Gambia out of the Commonwealth in
2013, calling it neo-colonial. In 2007 he
claimed to have found a herbal cure
for Aids.
In November the president announced
he would outlaw female genital
mutilation after international pressure
that included a campaign by the
Guardian. However activists have since
said continued international pressure is
needed for the president to pass his
declaration into law.
Despite strong commercial ties with
Britain and other European countries
whose citizens are regular visitors to
the Gambia’s white-sand beaches,
relations with the west have
deteriorated in recent years.
