Nairaland / General / Lord's Chosen Pastor Shot Dead In Lagos_Photo by Akbee(m): 6:20am On Jun 24, 2015 |
LAGOS— Unknown gunmen, Monday, shot dead Lagos State Coordinator of The Lord’s Chosen Charis-matic Revival Ministries, Pastor Chukwuemeka Okpokpo, at Apple Junction, Amuwo Odofin area of the state. The gunmen, said to have used a motorcycle, reportedly trailed the deceased from a Diamond Bank branch, where he had gone to withdraw N3 million for the church. They reportedly fired shots into the air, which sent other road users and passers-by scampering for safety. Reports said Pastor Okpokpo tried to escape when it became obvious that he was the target. He reportedly slowed down on reaching a bad spot in the road, and the hoodlums shot at the tyres of the Chosen vehicle he was driving, bringing the vehicle to an abrupt halt. One of the gunmen then alighted from their motorbike, walked to the vehicle and shot Pastor Okpokpo in the stomach. He was said to have waited to ensure that Okpokpo was no longer breathing before he took the nylon bag containing the money, went back to his two colleagues in the motorbike and they zoomed off. Fear-stricken residents were said to have rushed to the scene and raised alarm on discovering that the victim was wearing the Lord’s Chosen reflective jacket. Some of them were said to have alerted members of the church, who rushed him to the church’s clinic at Ijesha. When news of the tragedy filtered in, those who knew him wept uncontrollably, dispelling the report as rumour, while some said he was still in Ogun State, where he had gone to organise a crusade. Resurrection prayers A prayer session aimed at resurrecting him reportedly held between 12.30p.m. and 8p.m. Some of the church members were, however, of the view that the gunmen could have been hired assassins and not robbers. We’re investigating —POLICE Meanwhile, Lagos State Police Command said it had begun investigation into the killing. The command said it was too early to say if it was a case of robbery or assassination. A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard : “We are leaving all avenues open in our investigation.” Church members thronged Okpokpo’s Iju home to commiserate with his family. The family members hinted that Okpokpo’s body had been taken to his home town in Amizi, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Umuahia of Abia State. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/lords-chosen-pastor-shot-dead-in-lagos/

Politics / I'm Not Scared Of Buhari, Says Okonjo-Iweala by Akbee(m): 6:39am On May 29, 2015 |
MINISTER of Finance Ngozi Onkojo- Iweala said yesterday that she is not scared of President Muhammadu Buhari probing her. Okonjo-Iweala spoke in a statement while responding to what she considered an attack on her by Edo state Governor Adams Oshiomhole. She said: “There is no substance in the wild allegations that any money is missing from the account or that finances of the country under Okonjo- Iweala’s watch have not been well managed.” The minister added that she “has no reason to fear Buhari. Those who cannot adequately explain what they did with the resources of their states and are begging for bailout are those who should to be scared.” Okonjo-Iweala denied claims by Oshiomhole that she has been speaking out lately because of the “fear of Buhari”. According to her, “if there is any minister whose voice has been strong on the right issues over the past four years, it is Okonjo-Iweala.” She said has no apologies for insisting that a claim of N159 billion for Forex differentials by the marketers out of a total bill of N200 billion should go through an additional verification process. “When 80 per cent of a subsidy claim is made up of Forex differentials and not the value of the amount of fuel supplied, the right and proper thing to do is to take extra steps to ensure that the country is not being cheated. That is what Okonjo-Iweala did,” she said. On Oshiomhole’s statement that she “must disclose to the nation the full details of subsidy payments made to oil marketers in the last four years”, Okonjo-Iweala described the statement as “astonishing given the fact that every payment made to the marketers has been published in the media and widely disseminated through all news channels.” She stressed that apart from the monthly publication of allocations to the federal, state and local governments, the Federal Ministry of Finance also published SURE-P receipts and distribution to different tiers, details of payments to oil marketers and other information. She queried if the governor has demonstrated the same level of openness in his management of the affairs of Edo State. www.thenationonlineng.net/new/im-not-scared-of-buhari-says-okonjo-iweala/ |

The Benue State incoming Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, has described his experience as a motor park tout and his election as governor as a divine arrangement and the handiwork of God. Ortom, who bared his mind to The PUNCH in an exclusive chat in Makurdi, said his elevation from grass to grace was due to hard work and his firm believe in God. He said, “My journey from being a motor park tout to an elected governor is purely a divine arrangement. I cast my mind back to when I dropped out of school in Form 2 but I remained hardworking and I did not engage in crime to survive. “One thing I know is that hard work pays and you must keep faith with God; power belongs to God and He alone gives it to whoever He will.” The former Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment said he had dropped out of school in Form 2 due to lack of funds but this did not force him to engage in criminal activities to survive. Ortom, however, noted that the selection process of the PDP delegates in the last party’s primary in the state was manipulated by the party leadership intentionally to thwart his ambition of becoming the next governor. He said the party also frustrated the support of the Benue populace who supported him. He said, “The process of selection of delegates in the last PDP governorship election was manipulated by the leadership of the party to thwart my ambition and frustrate the people who all supported me. But God vindicated me and blessed me, and now I am an elected governor.” www.punchng.com/news/i-was-a-motor-park-tout-benue-gov-elect/ 1 Like

Oyo State Police Command arrested a suspected member of a robbery gang on his wedding day. Olumide Asiyanbi, 42, told newsmen that nemesis caught up with him when he was at the registry to sign the dotted lines. The police alleged he was a member of a six-man-robbery gang who had terrorised residents of Challenge area of Ibadan, the state capital. The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Katsina, said the suspects included a 62-year-old Ghanaian. Asiyanbi confessed that he had been involved in 10 different robbery attacks before he was arrested. He said, “I was arrested on my wedding day. I met the gang leader, James Agba, last year. He told me he knew how we could be getting regular money. He then initiated me into the gang. I have taken part in at least 10 operations since I joined them. “We used gun but I don’t know where James was buying them. Sulaimon and Alhaji, who are also in the gang, knew how the guns were bought for our operations. I have fired shots at our targets but nobody was killed.” www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/armed-robbery-suspect-arrested-on-wedding-day/

Politics / Unpaid Salary:Strike Imminent In 18 States by Akbee(m): 6:36am On May 22, 2015 |
There are strong indications that workers in 18 states may start an indefinite strike on Monday over unpaid salaries. The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday in Abuja, said that the congress had sent its task force team to various geo-political zones of the country. According to him, the strike has started in Plateau State, adding that a similar exercise will begin in Cross River State and others on Monday. The National Administrative Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress had, on March 19, 2015, set up a task force to pursue payment of salary arrears owed workers by some state governments. The report of the task force, which was exclusively obtained by our correspondent, showed that 19 states are owing salaries and pensions. Ozo-Eson told our correspondent that the NLC had sent its task forces to the affected states and directed those who were being owed to begin strike. He said, “The various Task Forces are working. Plateau is on strike, Cross Rivers is going on Monday; the various task forces are working. “A team is leaving for Benue to commence action; they are now free to commence action and we are supporting them.” The report of the Task Force of the NLC revealed that while some of the states had paid salaries of workers up to date, they were owing arrears of pensions running into months. The states owing salaries or pensions are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Ekiti, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, and Kogi. Others are Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers and Zamfara states. However, a look at the report reveals that Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto and Taraba are not indebted to their workers. The report stated that Abia State had not paid salaries of workers of the State Teaching Hospital for nine months. The state is also said to be owing workers of the Hospital Management Board eight months’ salary; Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, six months; Abia State Polytechnic, five months; local government workers, four months; and teachers, three months’ salary arrears. It was stated that while Enugu State had paid salaries of civil servants up to date, parastatals were owed 12 months’ salaries and pension and gratuity remain unpaid since 2010. Others states owing are Osun State with six months’ salary and pension arrears; Plateau with six months salaries and seven months pension; Benue with five months salaries and four months pension arrears; Kogi with four months of pension and salary arrears; and Oyo which owes three months salaries and between five and 11 months of pension arrears. Also among the states which are likely to owe salaries and pension of workers into the incoming administration on May 29 are Ekiti with three months of unpaid salaries. Jigawa is owing judiciary workers a month salary arrears in 2015. Ondo owes one month salary and pension, while Ogun is owing one month salary and 52 months of unremitted pension deductions to the Pension Fund Administration. Although Zamfara State has paid workers’ salaries up to date, the salaries of workers who were recruited in 2014 have not been paid. The NLC Task Force also stated that Rivers State owes one month of workers’ salaries and three months of pension while Kano has yet to pay newly employed teachers for three months. However, the Task Force report was silent on the status of Yobe and Ebonyi on the ground that there was no information on them. www.punchng.com/news/unpaid-salaries-strike-imminent-in-18-states/ |

Nairaland / General / Jilted By Lover:21-year Old Student Commits Suicide-photo by Akbee(m): 10:23pm On May 21, 2015 |
FRIENDS and family members of a 21- year-old student of Maritime Academy Oron, Effiong Otu are at a loss why he committed suicide by hanging himself on a rope in his room on Thursday morning after he was jilted by his girl friend. Ann, a family member told Vanguard that Effiong was found hanging in his room at Diamond Hill, a few minutes after he collected a rope from neighbours who became suspicious soon after he went inside his room with the rope wondering what he wanted to use it for. According to the source, when his mother Grace Otu, a nurse at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital left the house at about 3pm on that fateful day, the young man borrowed a rope and killed himself. According Ann: “The 10th of July was the 10th anniversary of his father’s death in a car accident and after the anniversary and everyone had left the house including his mother, he went to a neighbour and borrowed a rope which he took to his room and hung himself.” Ann said: “The neighbours became suspicious of what he was doing in his room with the rope and decided to rush there but found the door to the room locked and before they could force the door open he had died.” She said before he hung himself, he called one of his friends, Adu on phone requesting him to tell his girl friend, Blessing who works with the UNICEM that she should now be happy that he has killed himself for her. “Before his friend could rush to the house, the door had already been forced open by neighbours and Effiong’s body was hanging from the ceiling of the house”. Ann stated that Effiong was an only son of the family and was given the late father’s name as a source of succor for the family but “he has again left us by this thoughtless action” Perhaps to give an inkling of his planned action , Effiong had posted his face book page on the 6th of July the following message “It’s not about being engaged, married or in a relationship. It’s about being happy, safe, secured, relieved and feeling good. It’s about peaceful state of mind, it’s about sleeping at night without the fear of losing what you’ve got. It’s being yourself and not someone else, it’s about feeling loved, happy, respected, understood, cared for and appreciated.! Goodnight my beautiful people!! Efforts to speak with Hogan Bassey, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer did not yield any success as his phone was switched off. Effiong’s body has been removed and de[posited at the mortuary of the General Hospital, Calabar. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/jilted-lover-21-yr-old-student-commits-suicide/ cc:lalasticlala

lofty900:come on, this is Africa where family ties abound even between distance cousins. this is Africa where every member of the family is expected to uphold the saying"all for one and one for all'. its not really logical for one to compare the Obama cases to the Tottenham player's twitter stories cos they ain't that similar. while the former is the story of a man who has continuously feigned ignorance of the existence of his folks for nothing, the latter tells the story of a man who bought some pairs of shoes for his folks when they had none only for them to kick him with those same pairs. I'm n advocate of self help n independent thinking/judgement.I don't cordon lazy too.A matured man is expected to think logically n make wise decisions in order to live a comfortable life n not survive on the oxygen of relatives n friends.George Obama is a disappointment to his family members especially Obama whose political may hang in the balance of his family life. Barack Obama's extended family isn't n exception here cos he is n Africa to the bone. u wrote that its better for Obama not to associate Himself with him as Adebayo is crying today cos he did.Unfortunately,u failed to tk cognizance of the fact that his critics n political opponents cud have used that to score cheap political goals by painting the picture of a man who cares less about the kind of life his close blood live. |

3.The Huruma slum of Nairobi which is scarred by alcoholism, drug addiction and violence - and is where the President of the United States' brother lives in squalor 4.Obama during one of his presidential campaigns ! Such, apparently, is his devotion to good works that many Kenyans want George to stand for President, believing anyone sharing the name and blood of the most powerful politician on the planet can transform their lives. But, as I discovered, this may prove beyond George. Indeed, standing — let alone talking much sense or walking in a straight line — is tricky for the U.S. President’s brother much of the time, due to his chronic addiction to drink and years of drug abuse. Nor is there anything heroic and altruistic about his motives for living in the slums. His principal reason is that the potent local moonshine is cheap and readily available here, as is cocaine, heroin and marijuana. Clearly following the dictum that the best place to hide a tree is in a forest, George’s decision to settle in a slum called Huruma — which is scarred by alcoholism, drug addiction and violence — means his own destructive behaviour attracts little attention. Although he claims not to be using heroin or cocaine, George now spends his time drinking what locals call Chang’aa — a spirit distilled with maize and spiked with chemicals — from the moment he wakes to the moment he slips into unconsciousness. Laced with ethanol, embalming fluid or battery acid to give it more kick, this substance is regularly blamed for causing blindness and death when the criminal syndicates behind the trade mix it wrongly. A glass costs about 10p and, after just five small shots, even hardened drinkers can barely remember their own name. Regular users suffer liver and kidney failure, as well as mental impairment known as ‘wet brain'

1.George Obama pictured relaxing in the slum The two men may share the same father, but while Barack Obama was born in Hawaii to his father’s American second wife, George — born in Kenya — was the product of Obama Senior’s fourth marriage. Today, while Barack entertains at the White House, flies aboard Air Force One and is a friend of film stars and royalty, George, 30, is to be found slumped in his corrugated iron shack which even fellow slum-dwellers regard as a hovel. George has also written a memoir, called Homeland. Published in 2012, it details how he turned his back on a middle-class Kenyan upbringing to live among the desperately poor in Nairobi’s infamous slums. The book’s precis tell us: ‘George chooses to live in the Nairobi ghetto, where he works to help the ghetto-dwellers, and especially the slum kids, overcome the challenges surrounding their lives.’ And the book quotes George thus: ‘My brother has risen to be the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Here in Kenya, my aim is to be a leader among the poorest people on Earth: those who live in the slums.’ In what sounds like the script for a Hollywood film, he claims to have been the driving force behind the transformation of a slum football team into one of the top sides in Kenya, known as ‘Obama’s champs’. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2186782/Obamas-slumdog-brother-Meet-hopeless-drunk-Nairobi-shanty-town-U-S-Presidents-BROTHER.html
