General Muhammadu Buhari has
submitted to the security agencies for
screening 40 names being considered
for ministerial appointments .
According to Daily Post, the names
were submitted by the president-elect

The Department of State Services, the
Directorate of Military Intelligence and
the National Intelligence Agency are
the security agencies screening the
potential ministers.
The names listed by the president-elect
were mostly former PDP men who had
defected to the APC, leading people to
question where is the change.
The names being screened include
Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the former
Osun state governor and ousted PDP
national secretary; Chief Bode
Mustapha, the former PDP national
auditor; an All Progressives Congress
stalwart from Ogun state; and Engineer
Segun Oni, the former Ekiti state
governor and APC deputy national
chairman (South West).
Others are Dr Kayode Fayemi, the
immediate past governor of Ekiti state;
Dr. Abba Ruma, a former minister for
agriculture and water resources; and
Chief Kanu Agabi, a former minister of
justice.
The list continues with Donald Duke, a
former governor of Cross River state;
Governor Raji Fashola of Lagos state;
and Yinka Folashade Oredola, a
pharmacist from Ondo state.
Others on the list are Rotimi
Akeredolu, a former gubernatorial
candidate in Ondo state; Governor
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers
state; Engineer Funsho Kupolokun, a
former group managing director of the
Nigeria National Petroleum
Corporation; Governor Rabiu Musa
Kwankwanso of Kano state; and Bisola
Adegbenro, a senator-elect from Ogun
state.
Also on the list are Isaiah Danjuma,
the son of General TY Danjuma from
Taraba state; Dele Momodu, the
publisher of Ovation; Kehinde
Lawanson, a former executive director
of First Bank; and Chief Bayo Ojo
(SAN), former minister of justice.
The rest of the names will be published
when security agencies confirm the
names to newsmen.
Buhari ran on the platform of change
but critics have asked whether working
with the old guard even with a new
system can guarantee change? If you
agree or disagree with this, leave your

Politics / PDP Plans To Merge With Apga,Lp,Kowa,Hope Party And Others? by Akbee(m): 11:22am On May 17, 2015
-Nigeria may turn to a two party state if the plan to merge PDP with smaller party sees the light of the day
-APC position threatened come next election
According to a
Premium Times report,
leaders of the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, are
plotting to change their name
and merge with smaller
parties who possess similar
ideologies following its loss at
the recent national elections.
A source reportedly said the
PDP is planning to merge with
the All Progressive Grand
Alliance, Labour Party, Kowa,
Hope Party and others to form
a mega opposition party to
challenge the APC.
“There will be a special
convention after the handover
on May 29 where a formal
merger process will start,” he
said
Governors Sule Lamido,
Godswill Akpabio, Muazu Aliyu
and a few other governors are
championing the push
towards forming an alliance
with other parties, it is
believed.
The parties needed to form the alliance
are the All Progressive Grand Alliance,
the Labour Party, Kowa, Hope Party
and others. It is hoped the new
coalition will be able to challenge the
APC.
Israel Ebije, a spokesman for Governor
Muazu Aliyu of Niger state, told
Premium Times that his boss backs
the movement and they are trying to
transform the party into a very
formidable opposition.
He said that many individuals and
political elders will be brought along,
and revealed that governors Lamido
and Aliyu decided to stay in the PDP
as a matter of principle because they
could not leave a house they had built
for tenants to come and take over. He also explained that the party might
have to change its name, because just
the word PDP has become quite toxic
to Nigerians and that it will be
counterproductive to continue to use it
as a viable opposition party.
“PDP may go and a new party may
emerge, that is the way to go,” he said.
This formation follows the APC
strategy, as the APC is the child of the
merger of three main opposition
parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria,
the All Nigeria Peoples Party, and the
Congress for Progressive Change, as
well as a faction of the APGA, in 2013
The PDP has ruled the nation since
1999 but is now entering unknown
territory, as it will be in opposition for
the first time.
The party not only lost the presidential
race but also the two houses of the
National Assembly and many guber
elections especially in the North where
it only retains Gombe and Taraba
states.

Celebrities / Lady Accuses Jim Iyke Of Marrying Her Every Night In Her Dreams-photo by Akbee(m): 7:43am On May 17, 2015
Jim Iyke has never had it easy with
the womenfolk. Most issues he has
had with them he never bargained for.
Just like last Monday, the actor was
doing the regular thing everyone would
do after meeting with who you
consider your favourite governor in
Nigeria. He posted a picture of himself
with Governor Godswill Akpabio of
Akwa Ibom State, with catchy captions
to show how much he respects the
governor for his wonderful
achievements in his state.
His post was as harmless as it could
get but one of the comments he got in
return must have stopped him in his
tracks. It was from a woman.
Whatever Jim had done to them? None
would marry him, just yet and this one
wouldn’t let him be.
Jackiify Malaysian student
Jim Iyke
“Jim I beg you in the name of
God,stop getting married to me in my
dreams. For more than three years
now I have always seen you in my
dreams, married to me. I have been
praying every time about it but it
always reoccurred. Even last night it
happened again. I am tired of this. If
you are his PA show him this text
message and if this is you, I beg you
in the name of God, to do something
about it” she fired in her comment to
Jim Iyke’s post of himself and
Governor Akpabio in Ikot Ekpene at the
commissioning of Ritman University
last Monday.
The comment definitely got attention
of Potpourri who decided to seek the
girl out who simply signed her name
as Jackiify . We got lucky again.
In a BBM chat with her later on,
Potpourri found out that the girl is a
Nigerian schooling in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. She goes by the name Ify
Jacob. The first thing that struck me
about her comment was that this
could be a girl acting out her fantasy
and laying it out in a dramatic way.
Then I asked her if she had ever had
any crush on Jim, many girls do.
“That is where the problem is” she told
me bluntly. “ I never had a crush on
him before but all of a sudden I
started having dreams that I am
married to him for more than three
years now. You cannot understand
because you are not Jim or a pastor. I
don’t like it. It is disturbing to me” she
says.

Nairaland / General / Exposed:Soldiers On Dead Row Starved In Underground Cell by Akbee(m): 3:49am On May 17, 2015
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana
(SAN), on Saturday, said 12 soldiers,
who were sentenced to death for
mutiny in September 2014, have been
starved and held underground by the
military.
Falana in an interview with Sahara TV,
which was monitored by our
correspondent, said the military was
denying the soldiers their right to an
appeal.
He added that it had been more than
one week since any of the soldiers
were fed food.
He said, “I am in touch with them (the
soldiers) and I am taking up their basic
complaints, which is that they are
currently being starved and
dehumanised by the military authorities
that are supposed to have taken them
to the jailhouse, having convicted
them. But they are being kept in an
underground cell somewhere in Lagos.
“Under the Armed Forces Act, soldiers
who are convicted and sentenced by
the court martial are entitled to appeal
to the Court of Appeal after the
authorities might have confirmed the
sentences. In this particular instance,
these 12 soldiers are among 66 that
have been convicted and sentenced to
death.
“The Chief of Army Staff ought to have
confirmed the sentences since
November (2015) in the case of the 12.
And in the case of the 54 others, it
should have been February, since they
were convicted in December (2014). In
other words, confirmation or review
should take place less than two
months after conviction.”
According to Falana, seven months
after, the military authorities have not
done anything. He added that the fate
of the soldiers had yet to be
determined because the confirmation
had not taken place and they had been
denied their right of appeal under the
Armed Forces Act and under the
Nigerian Constitution.
He further underscored the illegality of
the military authorities executing the
soldiers without allowing them exercise
their right of appeal, stating that the
country was no longer under a military
dictatorship.
“The soldiers did not commit mutiny.
They were asking for weapons to fight
Boko Haram and Section 217 of the
Nigerian Constitution says the
government of Nigeria shall equip
them adequately. In this case, the
government failed in its responsibility
to equip the army and simply asked
these boys to commit suicide,” he said

Politics / African Peer Review Rates Johnathan Administration Low by Akbee(m): 9:28pm On May 16, 2015
The African Peer Review Mechanism
said on Saturday that the 2011-2015
development plan initiated by the
President Goodluck Jonathan
administration had failed to improve
the nation’s economy and the well-
being of Nigerians.
The five-year development plan
specifically focused on three key areas,
Strong, inclusive and non-inflationary
growth; Employment generation and
poverty alleviation, and Value re-
orientation of the citizenry.
But the APRM, in a statement in Abuja,
said, “While the plan looked good on
paper, it has not succeeded in
producing significant improvement.
Indeed, corruption has worsened over
the past five years.”
The APRM was inaugurated on 9
March 2003 by African leaders within
the context of their initiative – the New
Partnership for Africa’s Development –
as an instrument for self-monitoring
for good governance in all its
ramifications.
The body has, at its fulcrum, the
deepening of democratic and
development practices and covers four
themes: Democracy and Good Political
Governance, Economic Governance
and Management, Corporate
Governance and Socio-Economic
Development.
In a statement jointly signed by its
Chairman, National Steering
Committee of the Second Peer Review
of Nigeria, Senator Ken Nnamani and
Senior Fellow, Centre for Democracy
and Development, Dr. Jibrin Ibrahim,
the APRM described the country as
“having a paradox of extreme riches as
well as mass poverty.”
It added that stakeholders, mainly from
the third tier of government in both
private and the public sectors across
the country, agreed after the exercise
in Abuja on Friday that inspite of its
abundant rich natural resources, the
country’s over-reliance on its rich oil
resource base has had an adverse
effect on its economy.
It noted that the development had
resulted in the neglect of other sectors,
leading to high levels of corruption,
poverty, high unemployment rates,
poor infrastructure, low growth rates,
and widespread insecurity and crime.
The validation meeting emphasised
that it was imperative that Nigeria
consolidates its efforts towards
diversification of the economy to
reduce the impact of external shocks,
and encourage private sector-led
development.

Celebrities / Luxembourg PM,Xavier Bettel Marries Gay Partner by Akbee(m): 10:39pm On May 15, 2015
Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier
Bettel, has married his gay partner,
becoming the first leader in the
European Union to enter into a same-
sex union in a symbol of growing
social change across the continent.
Bettel, 42, a centre-right politician, who
became premier in 2013, tied the knot
on Friday with Gauthier Destenay, a
Belgian architect, just months after the
Roman Catholic duchy legalised gay
weddings.
The prime minister and his partner held
hands as they arrived for the low key
ceremony at the Luxembourg town
hall, where around 100 well-wishers
applauded them.
“Thank you to all Luxembourgers,”
Bettel said after the ceremony, as the
crowd threw rice and confetti over the
couple.
As well as being the first leader in the
28-nation EU to wed a gay partner,
Bettel is only the second in the world
after Iceland’s Prime Minister, Johanna
Sigurdardottir, who married her writer
partner in 2010.
Iceland is not part of the EU.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel,
who was among the guests at Bettel’s
wedding, said he had come for a
“mate’s wedding”, adding that it was a
“big moment” for his counterpart from
the neighbouring country.
“Luxembourg is giving the image of a
country that is advanced on social
issues. That is a message sent at a
time when homophobia is on the rise
in Europe,” said another friend of the
couple, journalist Stephane Bern.
Luxembourg’s parliament approved
same-sex marriage in June 2014 and
the first weddings took place on
January 1, 2015, making it the latest in
a growing number of European
countries to embrace the trend.
Bettel’s wedding comes the week
before staunchly Catholic Ireland holds
a referendum on whether to allow
same-sex marriage.

Politics / I Will Return Stronger To Rebuild PDP,Johnathan Tells Party Leadership by Akbee(m): 5:29am On May 15, 2015
*Says he’ll take a short rest outside Nigeria
*Adds: My very close aides did not vote

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA — PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has told the National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that he would return stronger to help rebuild the party after taking a short break outside the country with his family.
The President urged the leadership, stakeholders, leaders, elders and members of the PDP to put behind them the defeat the party suffered during the March 28 presidential election where it lost to the All Progressives Congress, APC, after 16 years in power and build the party for future elections.
President Jonathan, who did not actually blame the leadership of the party for his loss at the election, was said to have heaped the blames on some of his very close aides, just as he told the NWC members that a Special Adviser from the North did not even vote on the day of Presidential election.

Vanguard gathered that President Jonathan, who thanked members of the NWC for their support, disclosed to them that soon after the May 29 handover of government, he would travel outside the country with his family, rest, recuperate and then come back to politics later, but not immediately.

President Jonathan who also warned the leadership of the party against apportioning blames asked them to ensure that the PDP does not disintegrate because of March and April elections.

PDP will bounce back

He said from all indications, the PDP would bounce back against the backdrop that there would be the problem of ego where three persons will be serving as Presidents of the country with only one elected.
The Wednesday meeting was held behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa with the aim of ending the lingering crisis in the party after the general elections where some PDP governors, party leaders, stakeholders and members have been calling for the sack of the present National Working Committee, NWC, under Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.
The meeting, the first of its kind since the PDP lost the presidency after 16 years of leadership to the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, retd, was a postmortem on the election, to discuss the way forward for the party especially the move to heal the inflicted wounds, to restrategise as well as reposition the party.

It was also gathered that those present at the meeting used the opportunity to ruminate on the elections and the loss where they wished that the PDP would have won the election.

The ruling PDP, which controlled the Presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives for 16 years since 1999, did not only suffer Presidential defeat, but it lost in its traditional states of Plateau; Niger; Kaduna; Benue; Bauchi and Jigawa.

Politics / How We Defeated Johnathan-Tinubu by Akbee(m): 5:14am On May 15, 2015
LAGOS — ALL Progressives Congress,
APC, leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,
yesterday, attributed the defeat of
President Goodluck Jonathan in the
last presidential election to a
commonsense revolution anchored on
a rebellion against the excesses of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
He spoke at a book launch in Lagos
where Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole
Soyinka extolled him, and Governor
Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State as the
drivers of the uprising, which he said,
was fast-tracked by President
Jonathan’s mishandling of the Nigerian
Governors Forum, NGF crisis.
The public presentation of the book
“Dynamics of Change: The Amaechi
Years”, was witnessed by a cross
section of the political class and civil
society including governors, former
governors, senators among others.
Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, who
was chairman of the occasion, said the
book only offered a glimpse into the
vision that stimulated the infrastructure
and developments during the Amaechi
years in Rivers State.
Amaechi on his part gave a peep into
his political challenges, noting how
even when he got Tinubu angry before
the APC convention, both men set
aside their issues for the common goal
of achieving victory in the elections
that were yet to be held at that time.
Tinubu, who was guest of honour at
the presentation of the book written by
Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi and Dr. Chidi Amuta
in his comments said: “Amaechi is an
example of common sense revolution.
In the course of the historic campaigns
for the 2015 Presidential Election, I
was emphatic that the election itself
was a great opportunity to popularise
and test the noble idea of a Common
Sense Revolution in Nigeria. Soon
enough, we found in the resonance of
the APC Change mantra with the
electorate a confirmation that Nigeria
needed a Common Sense Revolution
that is non-violent.
“Indeed there is a publication with that
title authored by me in which I argued
that Nigeria was ripe for a change of
leadership and Nigerians must act in a
Common Sense and rational way in
choosing their leaders. The results of
the March Presidential elections and
that of April have demonstrated clearly
the desire by Nigerians for change.”
The APC national leader, however,
urged the new crop of leaders to
embark on policies that will alleviate
the plight of Nigerians.”
Continuing, he said: “Elections over,
both the leaders and citizens must
brace up to meet the challenges
required to build a better, more
prosperous nation. Indeed, even as we
subscribe to the tenets of Common
Sense Revolution, we must retool
ourselves, the new leadership must
embark on policies that will improve
the general well-being of the mass of
our people.
“It is a positive one to rescue, repair
and restructure the nation and its
institutions in ways that further
collective prosperity and well-being.
The only violence that is to be done is
to violence, injustice and poverty
themselves. At its essence, a common
sense revolution is a call to return to a
level of decency in the relationship
between government and the governed,
between each one of us and his
neighbour.
See more photos here
“In my view, our gathering to celebrate
the landmark achievements of my
brother, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in
Rivers State in the last eight years is
also another justifiable celebration of
idea of Common Sense Revolution for
development. The publication of the
book, Dynamics of Change: The
Amaechi Years is a timely service to
history.”
Governors’ Forum crisis
Lauding Amaechi’s leadership of the
NGF, the former Lagos State governor
said “this occasion is all the more
remarkable because of the huge
challenges Amaechi has been facing
especially in his second term from an
extremely hostile federal government.
His role as the chairman of the
Governors’ Forum invariably brought
him into a bitter collision with
President Jonathan.
“Governor Amaechi and most of the
governors want a properly defined
federalist relationship with the
government at the centre. The
President would have none of that as
in the notable example of the
management of the federation account.
This is, therefore, another great
opportunity to salute Amaechi’s rare
courage of conviction and sense of
purpose. The APC has every cause to
be proud of him,” Tinubu said.
Amaechi took a risky decision —Soyinka
In his comment, Prof. Soyinka
commended Amaechi for standing up
to President Jonathan during the NGF
crisis. He identified Tinubu and
Amaechi as the two main agents who

Health / Some Bad Foods To Avoid by Akbee(m): 6:04am On May 14, 2015
There are some foods out there that
you should just stay away from, no
matter what. Read on for some of the
surprising — and not so surprising —
foods you should banish from your
diet.
Margarine: Some brands of margarine
are loaded with a whole slew of
unhealthy trans and saturated fats.
And, many of the brands that claim to
be trans fat-free are actually allowed to
contain a little bit of the stuff.
Margarine sticks are the absolute
worst offenders here: they almost all
contain those unhealthy fats.
Potato chips: This greasy, salty and
carbohydrate-loaded snack contains
ultra-unhealthy trans-fats, which can
lead to increased risks of diabetes,
heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and
cancer.
Low-fat packaged foods: Healthy fats
like olive oil and avocados are great in
small doses, and you do need these
fats to maintain a healthy diet. But
take a close look at the nutritional
facts of any low-fat food before buying:
it might be packing a whole bunch of
unhealthy ingredients.
Frozen meals (even ‘healthy’ ones!):
It’s not that all frozen foods are bad.
But those frozen dinners? Well, what
you’re gaining in convenience you’re
usually losing in nutritional value.
Frozen dinners often contain
alarmingly high levels of salt, sugar,
fat and calories.
Processed meats: There is little
nutritional value, and plenty of
nutritional concerns, in smoked, cured
and salted meats. Loaded with
cholesterol, fat and salt, processed
meats also contain plenty of
preservatives that actually may
increase your risk of certain types of
cancer.
Microwave popcorn: Air-popped
popcorn is a surprisingly healthy
snack. But the packaged stuff? Well,
microwave popcorn tends to contain
plenty of scary, unhealthy additives,
trans-fats and way too much salt.
Stick to the stovetop stuff and pour on
the real butter and salt. That way, you
can control how much you want. And
it tastes better, too!

Health / Lead Poisoning Kills 28 In Niger State,says FG by Akbee(m): 5:22am On May 14, 2015
ABUJA— The Federal Government,
yesterday, announced the outbreak of
lead poisioning in some villages in Rafi
Local Government Area of Niger State,
which has claimed 28 lives.
Minister of State for Health, Fiddles
Nwankwo, who briefed newsmen over
the incident in Abuja yesterday, noted
that most of those affected were
children below five years.
He further said that a technical team
confirmed the outbreak of lead
poisoning in the area.
Nwankwo linked the outbreak to some
new-found illegal mining sites, which
contained more leaded ores but were
often brought home for crushing and
processing.
Altogether, 65 cases have so far been
recorded in the affected areas, but
there were signs that it could spread to
neighbouring localities in the area and
Kaduna State.
Nwankwo said, however, that the
poison was not contagious if the
people were amenable to control and
safer and healthier practices were
observed.
He explained that the essence of the
briefing was to raise awareness and
solicit for the cooperation of the
people.
According to him, “the rapid
assessment by the National Centre for
Disease Control and the federal and
state ministries of health revealed that
as at May 12, 65 cases and 28 deaths
had occurred, giving a case fatality
rate of 43 percent.
“All the 28 cases were children below
the age of five, made up of 17 females
and 11 males.
“Additionally, the finding revealed a
serious impact on our livestock with
cows, goats and chicken most
affected.
“The purpose of this press briefing is
to inform the press and fellow
Nigerians of an outbreak of lead
poisoning in some villages of Rafi
Local Government Area of Niger State.
“And it is currently spreading to
neighbouring localities in the state and
Kaduna state.
“The affected children were found to
have serum lead levels of about
between 17 to 22 times higher than the
acceptable limits established by the
World Health Organization, WHO.”
Nwankwo then assured that
government was working towards
containing the outbreak, even as the
palliative treatment of the sick children
had started.

Politics / Buhari's Inauguration: Expect Low Key Ceremony-APC Transition C'ttee Chairman by Akbee(m): 5:13am On May 14, 2015
ABUJA— The inauguration of the
President-elect, General Muhammadu
Buhari would be low key, the chairman,
All Progressives Congress, APC
Transition Committee Chairman, Chief
Timipre Sylva said, yesterday.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Sylva
cited the dwindling economy as the
reason for the decision.

Though he was not categorical about
the number of Heads of State
anticipated to grace the occasion on
May 29, Sylva, however, said that a
number of them would come. He said:
“There are no challenges, we are
planning very well and I think we are
going to give Nigerians a compact
inauguration.
“We are not going to be flamboyant.
We think that this country cannot
afford a flamboyant ceremony this
time because the economy is not in
good shape right now. So we are
actually planning to give Nigerians a
sanitized and compact event which will
be a source of pride to Nigerians.
“We have not gotten all the
confirmations but we have already
gotten from some countries. He also
dismissed the insinuation that there
may be rift between the incoming and
the outgoing government. “There is no
problem, it is just politics. What
happened is that they were on the
wrong side and they lost.
We are on the right side and we won.
And so, the government will have to
continue and just like we were there
when they were governing, they also
have to be there when we are
governing the country,” he said. On the
allegation that he was carrying a
corruption baggage and as such was
not qualified to be in Buhari’s cabinet,
Sylva, who was also the former
governor of Bayelsa State, expressed
shock that his detractors had already
convicted him before the courts would
give their judgment on the matter.
He said he was innocent of all the
charges, believing that the courts
would eventually quash the charges. “I
will be shocked to hear that. Maybe,
those peddling the allegation are the
courts and they have already convicted
me. We have courts in the land and
you know that PDP is the party of
impunity. Today if I pick you up and I
charge you to court on charges of
corruption, does that convict you? It is
only the court that can convict you and
that is why we have rule of law.
“A situation where people just pick you
up and say you’re corrupt just to
persecute you, does not augur well for
our democracy. I have been vindicated
politically and I will be vindicated by
the court also because I ran the best
government in Bayelsa state, a better
government than what the outgoing
President ran in Bayelsa state. “I can
assure you that I am going to come
out clean at the end of the day from
the charges against me.”
