RIVERS STATE GOVERNMENT CLOSES SCHOOLS

•directs religious organisations to restrict their activities

The Rivers State Government has closed all schools in the state and directed all religious organisations to restrict their activities as a result of the global coronavirus pandemic.

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike said that the action was taken in the interest of Rivers State.

The closure affects public and private Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions.

He said: "Based on the above precautionary measures, the State can be described to be at an alert state. To further strengthen our resolve to protect our citizens, the State Government has taken the following decisions:

"1. All Schools in the State are to be closed down with effect from Monday, March 23, 2020.

2. All Religious Organisations are to restrict their activities."

Governor Wike said that his administration took the decision with a deep sense of responsibility.

He said: "As you are aware, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has described coronavirus as a global pandemic. This development calls for collective action by all well-meaning citizens.

"As a responsive government, even though we have not had a confirmed case of coronavirus, we did not rest on our oars as we set-up a Five-man Inter-ministerial committee to carry out an aggressive public enlightenment that will protect all those living and doing business in the State from the disease.

"This decision was taken because we understand that we are the headquarters of the Hydrocarbon Industry and also a major commercial hub in the country that attracts people from all walks of life."

The Rivers State Governor noted that with actions taken, the State is alert to address any situation.

"The committee had since its inauguration carried out Stakeholder Engagement with Community Development Committees, Religious Groups, Principals and Head teachers of schools, Traders Association, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Military, Paramilitary, Police, International Oil Companies and The Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON).

"In addition to this, radio and television jingles, flyers and billboards have been fully utilised by the committee to pass the prevention message to all the nooks and crannies of the State."

The Governor added: "The State Ministry of Health has also been empowered to set up intervention resources:

"i. 158 Surveillance and Ad-hoc personnel have been trained.

"ii. One Treatment Centre, Holding Centers in the Two Teaching Hospitals and all General Hospitals in the State are fully functional.

"iii. All Health Workers, both private and public have been trained and briefed on Infection Control Measures and appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),Hand Sanitizers have been procured, Infrared thermometers have been procured and Stockpiling of other commodities and equipment and we have redoubled surveillance at our Airports, Seaports, Waterways and Land routes."

Governor Wike pleaded for the understanding of Rivers people.

He said: "My dear good people of Rivers State, as painful as these decisions may seem, it is a sacrifice we must make to protect ourselves in the face of recent developments.

"Let me assure all those resident in the State, that the State Government under my leadership is ready and willing to protect their lives at all times.

"May I therefore call for the understanding and collective support of all and sundry to keep our State safe from coronavirus.
Together, we shall win with God on our side."

Simeon Nwakaudu,
Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

My able course mates,
In short,
All protocols duly observed.

My name is my name, and I am here to
propose the motion that states.. 'Nobody
senior another person for this life, na turn
by turn', with my following reasons.
1. Dem first born you no mean say na you
go first die. Even Bible support am.
2. If you first me touch ceiling because you
tall, I go first you to pick stone sake of say I
near ground pass.
3. You fit first me enter SS1 and I fit first
you enter university.
4. My jeep fit stop for road while your Beetle
fit carry you reach house.
5. Girl wey marry last year fit born pikin
before woman wey marry 10 years ago.
6. Small boy wey just finish school fit begin
work before chairman wey do NYSC 2005
7. If aeroplane engine knock, both person
wey dey first class and the one for
economy, na the same Jesus dem go call.
8. Na Oga de pay driver, but AC de first blow
driver before e reach oga for back.
9. Person wey de healthy fit die before
person wey de sick.
10. You de stay upstairs no mean say you
near God pass.
11. Stone de scatter water, and water de
pieces stone.
12. Mr time keeper, as you want to ring that
bell, may your time in this world not be over.
I hope with these few points of mine, I have
been able to convince you that 'no body
senior another person for this life,
Na turn by turn
*Reflect on these words*

1.Your BIRTH came through *Others*

2.Your NAME was given by *Others*

3. You were EDUCATED by *Others*

4.Your INCOME indirectly comes through *Others*

5. Your RESPECT is given by *Others*

6. Your first BATH was given by *Others*

7. Your last BATH will be done by *Others*

8. Your FUNERAL will be organised by *Others*

9. You will be taken to your FINAL RESTING PLACE by *Others*

and

10. EVERYTHING you owned will be inherited by *Others*

Isn't it high time we learn to live in peace and harmony with *Others*, because all through our lives, at one point or the *Other*, we will need each *Other*?

PRESS BRIEFING RESPONSE BY THE MINISTRY OF HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ON THE NON PAYMENT OF STIPENDS TO N-POWER BENEFICIARIES.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development came into existence in August 2019.
The mandate of the new Ministry was communicated in October 2019. Among the Agencies and Programmes reposed on the Ministry was the National Social Investment Programme. The N-Power initiative is one of the four clusters of National Social Investment Programmes that were designed to stem the growing tide of poverty, unemployment and Social Insecurity in Nigeria. N-Power is the job creation and economic empowerment component of the NSIP for young unemployed Nigerians.I have received initial briefings from heads of Agencies and Programmes reporting to the Ministry from October 2019, however on account of the technicalities involved, the handing over process is still on-going.
With regards, to recent agitations and outcry against the non – approval of payments of October and November 2019 stipends to N-Power beneficiaries the Ministry wishes to:
i Reaffirm its commitment to ensuring that beneficiaries of all the Social Investment Programmes access interventions designed for them within the stipulated guidelines.
ii, Inform that the Home Grown Feeding Programme, which is also a cluster of the NSIP has continued to run smoothly since its transfer to the Ministry. Except for the four states that were submitted during my absence and this has already been treated.
iii, That there are information gaps with regards the monitoring and evaluation mechanism and framework of the N – Power and the GEEP programmes. Some officials of NSIP are of the view that the programmes should be completely restructured.
iv, The Ministry is currently engaging the NSIP Cluster Heads for clarifications; in essence, the Handover and Taking process for these two (2) programmes is still ongoing.
v, That N-Power beneficiaries enrolled in 2016 are yet to be exited 16 months after the elapse of their contract; they are supposed to have been graduated to a more productive venture;
That the Ministry is currently making efforts to develop an exit strategy, which is non-existent.
I wish to seize this opportunity to assure all N- Power beneficiaries and indeed all Nigerians of the Ministry’s commitment to Mr President’s promise to stem poverty in the country as well as lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.
This is a clarion call we must all answer for the sake of our fatherland. This present glitch needs addressing if we are to commence the assignment at hand with the required traction. In this regard, the Ministry also wishes to assure all that all arrears will be paid as soon as the handing and taking processes are concluded and the grey areas are addressed. There should be no apprehension with regards the continuity or sustainability of the Social Investment programmes as the Government will continue to adequately fund them and ensure that they reach the beneficiaries and touch lives positively. Finally, while craving for patience and understanding, I wish to thank all the NSIP Managers, who are taking great pains to explain the technicalities of the project to the Ministry officials to ensure a smooth transition.
