Jose Mourinho will soon get to test out life in the manager's seat at Manchester United sooner than many expect. Mourinho and Leicester City's Claudio Ranieri were announced on Wednesday as the managers for Soccer Aid, a match which raises money for Unicef to be played at Old Trafford on June 5. Former Chelsea boss Mourinho will take charge of the England team while Ranieri will be in charge of the Rest of the World side. Mourinho has been linked with several jobs since being sacked from a second stint at Chelsea in December. Speculation is rife that he will replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, while UK media reported on Tuesday that he has been approached by French champions Paris Saint-Germain. But before he starts any new job, he will lead a team of English celebrities and football legends, with Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce and singer Robbie Williams, co-founder of the event, as assistants. ``I want to be the first one to win the Soccer Aid trophy for both teams,’’ said Mourinho, who guided the Rest of the World team to victory in 2014. ``Sam and I will make a very good partnership and it will be a great feeling for Claudio to finally lose a match. ``I hope the organisers can help me now with an English passport.’’ Mourinho turned down the England job in 2007 but could be a candidate again if Roy Hodgson flops at Euro 2016. Ranieri meanwhile has Leicester on the cusp of an improbable Premier League title. The Foxes started the season as 5,000-1 shots after escaping relegation last season and now top the table by five points with four games left. ``Soccer Aid is a fantastic event, raising money for an amazing children's charity in Unicef,’’ Ranieri said. ``For Soccer Aid's 10th anniversary, it is a great honour that Robbie Williams has asked me to manage the Rest of the World XI and I'm looking forward to helping them defend their title.’’ Soccer Aid, which is played every two years, has raised 17 million pounds (24 million dollars) for Unicef since the first match in 2006. |

Ahmed Kathranda, the anti-apartheid activist jailed alongside Nelson Mandela has called on President Jacob Zuma to step down, adding pressure on the South African leader, two days after a court ruled he acted dishonestly over improper state spending at his private home. Echoing similar calls from opposition parties, Kathrada said in a letter published on Saturday that Zuma’s resignation would give the country’s government the chance to recover from “a crisis of confidence”. “In the face of such persistently widespread criticism, condemnation and demand, is it asking too much to express the hope that you will choose the correct way that is gaining momentum, to consider stepping down?” Kathrada asked in the letter, dated March 31. Mandela and Kathrada were among eight African National Congress (ANC) activists sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of trying to overthrow the apartheid government during the 1963-1964 Rivonia Trial. South Africa’s top court on Thursday held that Zuma had failed to uphold the constitution by ignoring instructions to pay back some of the $16 million in state funds spent on renovations at his sprawling residence at Nkandla. In a televised address to the nation on Friday evening, 73-year-old Zuma apologised and said he would pay back some of the money, as ordered, and that he never knowingly or deliberately set out to violate the constitution. He made no reference to calls for him to resign, led domestically by Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane and the Economic Freedom Fighters party led by Julius Malema. The opposition also launched impeachment proceedings against Zuma but these are unlikely to be successful because of the ANC’s strong majority in parliament. The ANC’s top leadership said it was united behind its leader, though the 86-year-old Kathrada’s intervention may carry weight within the party, which has governed the country since apartheid ended in 1994. The calls for Zuma to quit dominated local newspaper headlines and got high-profile play abroad. “It is a shame that the ANC is allowing its moral and political authority to be so grievously eroded by Zuma, instead of bringing his corrupt presidency to an end,” The New York Times wrote in an editorial on Friday. The scandal is arguably the biggest yet to hit Zuma, who has fended off accusations of corruption, influence peddling and rape since before he took office in 2009. Speaking on Talk Radio 702, Kathrada Foundation Director Neeshan Balton confirmed publication of the letter, which was ran on media websites www.timeslive.co.za and www.enca.com. My wife does same with only reason that she did not naturally like the thing since 10 years now, we still fight over it. The worse is that she has been using same sex position in the past 9 years. Tell her to change position, she will say, this is the position she only enjoy. Keep managing her like that. |

—The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, has urged the British Government to intervene in his case by asking President Muhammadu Buhari to release him from prison. Kanu who is facing treason charge alongside two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, approached the British government through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor. Kanu, in a letter dated March 24 and addressed to the British High Commissioner in Abuja, described himself as a victim of travesty of justice and gross human rights violation. He insisted that the President Buhari-led administration has violently abused his fundamental human rights through his prolonged detention in prison custody. Even though Kanu said he was ready to answer to the charge against him, he however expressed doubt in the ability of the Nigerian government to accord him fair trial, saying he has so far been subjected to immense persecution. British citizen Stressing that he is a British citizen, Kanu told the UK government that he was wrongly arrested and put in detention. “It is repeating the obvious to state that our client is a full British citizen, by virtue of which position he is entitled to all Rights, Privileges and Protection, guaranteed under the British Laws and conventions. “We are therefore constrained in the circumstance, to formally notify the British Government via this medium, of our well informed reservations, and apprehension, that our client is undergoing persecution in the charge above referred, and deliberate design by the persecutors to frustrate every effort of the Defense team aimed at giving our client a fair trial”. Kanu, through his lawyer, contended that his detention from October 14, 2015 till January 20, 2016, without any lawful order of court, was not only unlawful, but was in flagrant disobedience of orders of courts of competent jurisdiction which he said directed his unconditional release and discharge. Dual citizenship “It is the position of our Law, that dual citizenship is a constitutional right of the citizens of Nigeria, clearly provided for under section 28 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended in 2011. Dual citizenship is not a crime under our Law. Reservations on President's comment “Our reservations on the President’s comment was underpinned by the findings made in the ruling delivered on February 29, 2016, by Hon. Justice John Tsoho, wherein our client and the two other defendants were denied bail. “Recalled that on December 29, 2015, during the Presidential Media Chat, the President told the whole world that Nnamdi Kanu cannot be granted bail, alleging that he came into the country without a valid travelling passport. “This pronouncement was roundly condemned by both local and international commentators. His pronouncement was viewed as a clear usurpation of the functions and powers of the judiciary. “Though very regrettable and extremely unfortunate, Nnamdi Kanu was refused bail on January 29, 2016. In refusing him and other defendants bail, the court also cited the facts of his possession of dual passports as a flight risk, and as such held that he cannot be granted bail.” Kanu maintained that Justice Tsoho denied him bail “in line with the pronouncement of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in his media chat telecasted live on December 29, 2015 |
Southwest PDP in quandary over Sheriff by Leke Salaudeen, March 31, 2016 at 12:00 am in Politics Ahead of the national convention scheduled for May 21, the Southwest Peoples Democratic (PDP) is divided over the tenure elongation being canvassed for the National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, by the zonal party leadership. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN examines the implications of the proposal on the party’s cohesion in the zone. The proposal by the Southwest leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cede the position of the national chairman to the north is generating ripples in the zone. When the National Vice Chairman, Southwest, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu- Sheriff, he said the North should retain the position, ahead of the convention. He argued that, if the position comes to the South, it will resort in branding the PDP as a regional party. Those opposed to the proposal said it contradicted the party’s position to zone the presidency to the north in 2019. Based on this, they argued that the Southwest should produce the next national chairman, a position, it has not held since the PDP was founded in 1998. Analysts are of the view that the proposal was an orchestrated plot by some PDP governors to accommodate Sheriff in the forthcoming convention or seek tenure extension for him. To other observers, it is curious that the call came barely hours after Sheriff returned from the region and wondered whether the move is a tacit campaign for Sheriff. A PDP chieftain, who spoke in confidence, said the Ogundipe leadership has plunged the Southwest PDP into an avoidable crisis at a time the party is factionalised in the zone. He said: “I don’t know why our leaders would go to Abuja to tell the national chairman that the Southwest zone has agreed that the north should retain party chairmanship when such a sensitive matter has not been exhaustively discussed by the stakeholders let alone taking decision. Ekiti Assembly to DSS: we won’t honour your invitation again by Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-ekiti, March 31, 2016 at 12:32 am in News Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have vowed not to honour any invitation from the Department of State Services (DSS), following the plight of their colleague, Afolabi Akanni, who spent 18 days in custody. There was drama at the Assembly complex yesterday when the three lawmakers allegedly abducted by the DSS appeared from “hiding”. Musa Arogundade (Ado 1), Sina Animasaun (Ekiti West 2) and Badejo Anifowose (Moba 2) appeared at a briefing addressed by Speaker Kola Oluwawole and Information Committee Chairman Gboyega Aribisogan. Oluwawole confirmed that they went underground to evade arrest by DSS, contrary to reports that they were “abducted” by the security agency. He said: “The three members and some governor’s aides went into hiding when it became obvious that the DSS was desperately after them.” Oluwawole added that the lawmakers had resolved to shun any invitation from DSS henceforth, alleging that the security agency still plans to arrest and detain more of them over what he called “spurious allegations”. The Speaker said: “We are lawmakers and not law breakers. If the DSS has started on a good note, we would have cooperated. “We have collectively resolved that based on that suspicion, we may not be able to honour any invitation by DSS because of our safety.” |

EgyptAir hijack: Man surrenders at Larnaca airpor A hijacking that diverted a domestic Egyptian flight to Cyprus has ended with all hostages released and the hijacker surrendering. EgyptAir Flight MS181 was taken over by a passenger claiming to be wearing a suicide explosive belt. Airline officials later said they had been told by Cypriot authorities that the belt was fake. The hijacker's motives remain unclear but the Cypriot president said the incident was not terrorism-related. No-one was injured in the hijacking, Cypriot government spokesman Nikos Christodulides tweeted. How the hijacking unfolded After a morning of tension, the hijacker was seen walking down aircraft steps at Larnaca airport with his hands raised. Some reports said the Egyptian man - named by Cypriot officials as Seif Eldin Mustafa - wanted to talk to his estranged Cypriot wife who lives on the Mediterranean island, while others said he was seeking the release of female prisoners in Egypt. Analysis - BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner It is only some small comfort that the man who hijacked Egyptair flight MS181 was bluffing. The bulging white "suicide belt" with wires sticking out turned out to be a fake. It at least means that this time Egypt cannot be accused of letting someone smuggle explosives through airport security and on to an airliner as they did in October at Sharm El Sheikh airport, destroying a Russian passenger jet in mid-air. But it still triggers a number of worrying questions about aviation security. How was it that a passenger, described by the Cypriot authorities as "mentally unstable" was able to carry enough materials through Alexandria airport to resemble a bomb? And what is to stop any future airline passenger, similarly unarmed, from pretending that he or she has a real device strapped to them? For Egypt's battered tourism industry, that has yet to recover from the October airline bombing, this hijack is a further blow it can ill afford. The hijacker's surrender came shortly after several people were seen fleeing the aircraft. One - apparently a crew member - escaped by climbing out of the aircraft's cockpit window. Throughout the morning, people had been seen leaving the aircraft after appearing to have been released. Local media reports said the hijacker had handed over a four-page letter in Arabic after the plane landed at Larnaca on Tuesday morning, and that later a woman thought to be his wife had arrived at the airport. Earlier, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades had responded to a reporter's question about whether the hijacker was motivated by romance, by laughing and saying: "Always there is a woman involved." I think many ladies do not appreciate marriage, maybe they should lean from divorce folks how to do anything to keep your partner. Many ladies also refuse their husband sex giving excuses of tiredness in a period of 1-3 Months. You must be writing letter to "aristos". Some ladies will tell you that because I have been a christian in several years, I don't use to sex. "Even though I did not do it for years, it doesn't bother me". The divorce are regretting to have use their foolishness to destroy their marriage and you that you are there do not value it. |

Top US Navy officer jailed over massive bribery scandal A high-ranking US Navy captain has been sentenced to nearly four years in jail for passing classified information to a Malaysian defence contractor. Daniel Dusek provided the information in exchange for luxury hotel stays and the services of prostitutes. Desek was also ordered to pay a $70,000 (£50,000) fine and $30,000 in restitution to the navy. He is the highest-ranking officer to be charged in one of the US military's worst bribery scandals. Sentencing Dusek in San Diego, California to 46 months in prison, Judge Janis Sammartino said: "It is truly unimaginable to the court that someone in your position with the United States Navy would sell out based on what was provided to you - hotel rooms, entertainment and the services of prostitutes." Dusek, 49, who plead guilty in January 2015 to conspiracy to commit bribery, told the court he would never forgive himself for his actions. The former captain was among several current and former naval officers charged in the scandal that involved tens of millions of dollars in bribes. At one point, Dusek served as deputy director of operations for the US 7th Fleet. The man at the centre of the scandal, contractor Leonard Francis, plead guilty in the case last year, admitting that his Singapore-based port services company, Glenn Defence Marine Asia (GDMA), plied Dusek and others with meals, alcohol, luxury hotel stays and other gifts to ensure US Navy ships stopped at ports where GDMA operated. In one instance, Dusek arranged for an aircraft carrier - the USS Abraham Lincoln - to stop at Port Klang, Malaysia, a port terminal owned by Francis. The 2010 port visit cost the United States about $1.6 million, officials said. "Captain Dusek's betrayal is the most distressing because the navy placed so much trust, power and authority in his hands," said US Attorney Laura Duffy. "This is a fitting sentence for a man who was so valuable that his conspirators labelled him their 'golden asset'," she added. http://www.bbc.com/news |
