A little while ago, I was at Ilorin General Hospital to meet the victims of last Thursday’s coordinated attack on PDP supporters by APC Thugs in Agbaji, Ilorin, Kwara State and surrounding communities.

Violence and bloodshed must have no place in our politics. I urge all the people of Ilorin and our supporters to remain calm and not retaliate. We will continue to run an issues-based campaign across the state and the nation. Let us all strive for peace in this election season.

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says he is qualified to become the next governor of the state because he has served three governors of the state.

He said, among other achievements, he has garnered experience both in the public and private sectors for 13 and 17 years respectively.

Sanwo-Olu stated this on Sunday at the 2019 Lagos Governorship Debate, organised by The Platform, an initiative of the Covenant Christian Centre aired on Channels TV.

He said, “To be the governor of Lagos State, I’ve had a unique opportunity in the last 30 years to come up with a pedigree of having served three governors.

“I’ve had public sector experience for 13 years and I’ve had private sector experience for 17 years.

“I’ve been an investment banker, I’ve run the treasury of three financial institutions and I’ve been head of corporate banking. I’ve run the balance sheets at the very highest level of three financial institutions.”

The governorship candidate added, “I’ve been a three-time commissioner, having served three different governors.

“At one time, I was an acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, which means I oversaw the preparation of budget of Lagos State twice.

“I’ve been the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, which means I had the opportunity to set up the Lekki Free Trade Zone.”

The presidency has called on Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to desist from basing his campaign for re-election on falsehoods concerning President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Governor Ortom’s campaign is designed to drive attention from pertinent issues in Benue state.

“Governor Ortom’s campaign is clearly one designed to stir division and hatred, and to divert the people’s attention from his inability to pay staff salaries and pensions for several months.

Below is the full statement by the presidency.

“It has been noted that the governor has been visiting churches in the state where he falsely tells congregations about President Buhari’s so-called plans to Islamise Benue State.

This nonsense has formed the basis of his campaign, because he has nothing to offer Benue people.

The allegations coming from Ortom were particularly unfair, when one considers how much support the governor received from the Federal Government, which supported his grazing laws as a means to end the farmer-herder crises that have plagued the state.

If not for President Buhari’s insistence that the governor be given a chance to effect the law, he would have faced resistance from different sources and found it difficult to implement.

While advising Ortom to immediately stop his dubious attacks on President Buhari, the Federal Government calls on the people of Benue State to not fall for Ortom’s deception and allow themselves to be hoodwinked by such a negative campaign.

They should instead, ask him why he has refused to pay staff salaries and pensions for months, and what he did with the funding from the excess crude account which should ideally have gone towards addressing such payments”.

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of lying by saying he won’t allow use of state resources for campaign purposes.

Abubakar has released what he described as evidence of how state resources have been used for Buhari’s reelection campaign.

The president on Wednesday said he would not allow the use of public funds for the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign.

But in a statement issued on his behalf by Paul Ibe, his spokesman, Abubakar cited alleged instances where the federal ministry of information and culture has been producing “campaign materials” for the president and the APC.

“In negation of the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, the Buhari administration and the APC has taken to the illegal deployment of state resources to its advantage for the election,” the statement issued on Thursday read.

“We wish to remind President Buhari and the APC that the use of state videos released by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture is illegal under the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

“The media is awash with advertisements with the hashtag #PMBDIDIT and signed by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture and referencing so-called achievements of the APC administration in the states of Abia, Kwara, Lagos, Ebonyi, Delta and Kano, among others.

“These are without doubt 2019 presidential campaign materials produced by the Ministry of Information and Culture using state resources and apparatuses to benefit President Buhari.

The Government of Kano State has restated its commitment to pay the new minimum wage of N30,000 with additional N600 and Niger state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, on Tuesday reassured the state chapter of the organised labour of his readiness to pay the new minimum wage, just as he pledged that welfare of the state workforce remain his major priority.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje disclosed this when members of the Nigeria Labour Congress staged a peaceful protest at the government house on Tuesday in Kano.

He said that his administration has given priority to the welfare of civil servants in the state.

Represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna, he said that Kano state was among the few States in the country that pays monthly salary on time.

“We are ready to pay N30,000 monthly salary because the welfare of our workers is paramount to anything and we will always give it preference.

“We will pay the N30,600 as soon as all processes are completed,” he added.

Ganduje then urged ‎women and youths to stay away from drug abuse due to their harmful effects.‎

‎”Our women, particularly married women and youths must say no to drug abuse and addiction. They should stop abusing it because it will ultimately damage their systems and cut short their lives,” he warned.‎

‎Earlier, the NLC Chairman in the state, Mr Kabiru Minjibir, commended the governor for his commitment to pay the minimum wage of N30,600.‎

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s handover of the All Progressives Congress’ campaign to the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has asked the President not to use this as “an excuse” to be absent from the presidential debate.

The presidential debate is organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group and is slated for January 19, 2019.

President Buhari had, on Monday, handed over his party’s campaign for next month’s elections to Tinubu, saying he did not want to lead the campaign because he did not want governance to suffer because of the elections.

Ordinarily, the President, who is the chairman of the APC Campaign Council, ought to lead his party’s campaign – supported by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Tinubu, who are both the council’s co-chairmen.

However, in an interview, the spokesperson for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Mr. Segun Sowunmi, said it was sad that whereas other presidential candidates were busy campaigning and wanting to be questioned by the people, President Buhari was boycotting campaign because he had nothing to campaign for.

Sowunmi said the development also showed that the President did not have the rigour it takes to campaign and govern the country.

He said, “President Buhari has only attended one campaign, which was the one held in Uyo (Akwa Ibom State capital). He is pushing people ahead to campaign for him because his chickens have come home to roost.

“It proves what we’ve been trying to say before that Buhari doesn’t have the energy and rigour to campaign.

“If he is giving someone else the task of leading his campaign, he could have as well given his presidential ticket to someone who has the energy.

“He should not use this as an excuse to be absent from the presidential debate.

“Nigerians want someone they can question and someone who is willing to listen to them. So, he (Buhari) should take charge of his own campaign.”

Sowunmi said boycotting campaign was the same thing as boycotting governance, asking President Buhari to take up his responsibility.

“His excuse that he doesn’t want governance to suffer is not tenable. In the United States, United Kingdom, France and other great countries, campaign is part of governance because it is an avenue to interact with your people. Hence, Buhari should not hand over his campaign to someone else.

“In the first place, if he had organised the system to be running smoothly, he would not have given this excuse,” Sowunmi added.

A former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and the Zonal Coordinator of the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign, Alhaji Umaru Nangwari Tambuwal, have declared the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, dead in the state.

The duo said they were already doing a final burial of the PDP in Sokoto State.

Wamakko and Tambuwal spoke in Denge Town, Headquarters of Denge-Shuni Local Government during the state during APC campaign flag off.

According to Wamakko, the APC was the only party that meant well for the state and Nigeria at large.

Presenting the APC flag to the governorship candidate of the party in the coming election, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto and Faruk Malami Yabo, his deputy, Wamakko said by God’s grace, the election is already won.

The former Governor said that APC tried to bring politicians who fear God, who love the state and who were ready to work for the state.

“This journey is for all of you. Come out en masse and ensure that PDP gets a final burial in the state. Cast all your votes for the APC.

“Cast all your votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming general elections,” he stated.

Also speaking, Tambuwal said no politician in the state commands followership like Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

He said, “We are doing official burial ceremony of PDP in the state. We learnt former governor, Dalhatu Bafarawa petitioned EFCC that he left 13 billion in Sokoto’s coffers before leaving office.

“APC is challenging Bafarawa today to come out and state which bank and the amount number such money was saved.

“We have done our calculation and come to the conclusion that PMB is going to win in 26 states with the exclusion of Abuja.

The Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, on Monday broke down in tears when a delegation from the state visited President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

The governor was moved to tears because of what he described as the recent setback in the fight against insurgency.

He, however, noted that the leaders had not lost hope in the President’s ability to win the war and restore peace in the state.

Amidst the tears, he told the President that the delegation came to present a set of observations and specific requests from a security meeting held a week ago in the state, which will require urgent presidential intervention.

Others present include the National security Adviser, Chief of Staff, the DG of DSS and NIA, Chief of Defense Staff and members of the National Assembly.

The meeting is still ongoing behind closed doors.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday received some leaders from the North East at the State House in Abuja.

A member of the delegation, Senator Ali Ndume, who spoke to journalists at the end of the meeting said the visit signaled the end of the PDP in the North East.

According to the delegation the President has so far shown much commitment to the challenges in the North East, hence their continuous support for him.

They also believe that electing another President might mean that the war against insurgency in the region will have to start afresh from the scratch.

The Nigeria Labour Congress says it will on Tuesday hold a nationwide protest to drive its demand for the upward review of the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said in a statement that there would be no strike for now.

Ozo-Eson, therefore, asked members of the public to disregard reports that the strike would begin tomorrow.

The statement read in part, “It has come to our attention that some sections of the news media have largely misrepresented our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new national minimum wage to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It should be recalled that the National Executive Council of the NLC met on December 17 last year and directed that we hold nationwide mobilisation of workers and our allies if, by December 31, 2018, the bill on the national minimum wage has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament.

“We immediately announced then that on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, there will be a nationwide mass mobilisation and protests simultaneously across all states in Nigeria. This does not translate to a strike.”

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan has released short audio online of Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi allegedly speaking ill about President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the short audio released by Omokri on his twitter page, Amaechi was allegedly heard saying Buhari does not listen to complaints of Nigerians nor read comments concerning his administration.

“The President does not listen to anybody. Does he even read,” Amaechi allegedly said.

The former presidential spokesman wrote: “Nigerians hear the audio of Rotimi Amaechi’s conversation, they may weep. The man has no iota of respect for Buhari.

“In fact, he hero worshipped former President Obasanjo in the tape and said he is the only worthy Nigerian leader. They know the truth, but hide it!”

Omokri further threatened to release more audio of Amaechi criticizing Buhari if the minister does not own up to the statement.

“We have more of the secretly recorded audios of Chibuike Amaechi, DG of the Buhari campaign, saying terrible things about Buhari’s government. I hear Amaechi wants to lie that he was referring to Goodluck Jonathan.

“Let him do that and I will release part two, which clearly shows he referred to Buhari.”
