ASUU Strike: Students block road leading to Lagos Airport [VIDEO]


Despite the threat of the Lagos State Police Command that it would mobilise operatives against the students to stop any demonstration, students have taken control of the highway leading to the airport and stopped vehicular movement.

“We can secure ourselves against external forces. We are aware that the Federal Government is mobilising the military to the venue of our protest but that will not stop us from barricading the airport,” Ojo said.


Scores of Rapid Response Squad vehicles are already gathered at the venue, as have other policemen, but they have so far resisted measures to restrain the protesters, which are no more than 100 in number.

At the scene of the protest is heavy traffic as a result of the vehicles planted in between the road and access to the airport is made impossible by students dancing in circles, wielding placards in the process.

YBTC News—The meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government on Tuesday has again ended without an agreement.

This means the six-month old strike by public university lecturers is set to continue. The striking lecturers had met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee on Tuesday at the National University Commission in Abuja with high hopes of resolving the impasse.

A senior member of ASUU, who craved anonymity told Channels Television that members of the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come with any new offer on the table.

Cause of Unrest Along Airport Road In Abuja?

There was a bit of unrest along the Airport Road in Abuja on Monday, as some youths blocked the road.

According to our correspondent, the incident took place as some aggrieved commercial motorcycle operators in the Federal Capital Territory protested against the impounding of their motorcycles by the task force of the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

As of the time of filing this report, it has been revealed that security operatives have restored normalcy to the area.

The Independent Electoral Commission, INEC returning officer for the 2022 Osun State governorship election, Prof, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has declared the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the poll.

Mr Adeleke polled over 403, 000 votes and won in 17 local government areas while Governor Adegboyega Oyetola won in 13 local government areas.

Adeleke had lost to the same opponent in the 2018 election after a disputed supplementary poll.

Kashim Ibrahim Shettima was born on the 2 September, 1966. He is currently a Senator and former governor of Borno State.

Senator Kashim Shettima is a very intelligent and outspoken politician from the Kanuri tribe. He is generally seen as extremely hospitable to other faith and ethnic groups. During his time as a Governor, Shettima had amongst his closest aides, an Ibo Christian from Anambra State in the Southeast, an Urhobo Christian from Delta State in the South-South, a Christian from Edo State in the South-South, a Yoruba Christian from the Southwest, a fulani man from Gombe in the northeast and a Hausa man from Zamfara State in the northwest.

Sen. Kashim Shettima was born in Maiduguri, Borno state, Nigeria to the family of Sir Kashim Ibrahim. He is married to Nana Shettima, and they have three children: two females and a male. Education: Sen. Kashim attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978; Government Community Secondary School, Biu in southern part of Borno State from 1978 to 1980; transferred to Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum (now in neighbouring Yobe State) where he completed his secondary education in 1983. He studied at the University of Maiduguri and earned a Degree (BSc) in Agricultural Economics in 1989. He had his one-year compulsory membership of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, at the defunct Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank, Calabar, capital of Cross River State in South-South, Nigeria, from 1989 to 1990. He obtained a master’s degree (MSc) in Agricultural Economics in 1991 at the University of Ibadan in Southwest, Nigeria.

Mr Shettima joined the University of Maiduguri as a Lecturer with the Department of Agricultural Economics and was in the academia from 1991 to 1993. Early career: In 1993, he moved into the banking sector and was employed by (now defunct) Commercial Bank of Africa Limited as head of accounts unit at the bank’s office in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has unveiled Senator Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State, as his running mate for the 2023 general election.

Kuje Medium Prison on Tuesday night came under heavy bombardments by unknown terrorists, throwing the entire area Council into confusion.

The first explosion, a high capacity bomb, went off around 10.25pm.

It was followed by second and third blast and sporadic gunshots that left the residents scampering into safety.

Few hours earlier, security report had alerted the prison officials of possible attacks of the medium prison.

A prison staff, who confirmed the attack in a chat with Daily Sun, explained that the attackers had come from the back of the prison yard.

Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, NDPB, says the organisation’s data protection ecosystem is valued at more than N4billion from 2019 to date.

Mr Olatunji said this on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. According to him, the time of signing the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation, NDPR, in January 2019, the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, yearly files the annual report of the regulation.

The national commissioner further said the report mirrors the achievements of the NDPR within the year, adding that the report revealed that the sector has immense opportunities; hence the need for its certification.

“As we speak, we have an ecosystem that has a combined value of over four billion naira an ecosystem that has employed over 8000 people who either work with Data Protection Compliance Organisations (DPCOs).

“We have 103 of them that we have licensed, we have even opened the portal for more to be licensed, we are adding more 43 DPCOs to be licensed, looking at increasing it to 150. “We have over three million registered companies with Corporate Affairs Commission, over 800 Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and a minimum of 500,000 of these companies would be major data protection controllers.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has challenged the federal government to accept the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) payment platform for it to call off the ongoing strike.

ASUU national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osedeke, who said this while speaking on Channels Television on Monday night, said the strike will continue unless government accept UTAS and honour the 2009 agreement.

It would be recalled that the ASUU strike action, which started on February 14, 2022 has entered 140th day this Monday. ASUU has been at loggerheads with the federal government, citing the refusal of the latter to honour the 2009 agreement it entered with the Union.

YBTC NEWS —All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu has submitted the name of Kabir Ibrahim Masari as his running mate in the 2023 presidential race to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for submission of names.

INEC had given political parties the June 17 deadline to submit names of presidential candidates and their running mates.

It was, however, gathered that the name of Masari, who hails from the home State of President Muhammadu Buhari, would later be changed after the party stakeholders must have agreed on the suitable vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.

YBTC NEWS – The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has explained the rationale behind picking Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta as his running mate in the 2023 general elections.

YBTC NEWS —A medical health expert, Dr. Toluwani Binutu, has warned women against inserting cucumber in the vagina. According to him, using a cucumber to clean the vagina is potentially harmful, and should be avoided.

The Chairman of the committee, John Odigie-Oyegun, disclosed this on Friday while submitting its report to the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu. He did not, however, disclose the names of the aspirants disqualified.

The committee screened the 23 presidential aspirants on Monday and Tuesday. A source said, all 23 aspirants screened were cleared and qualified, but the committee recommended a “safe list” of 13 names. Those recommended in the list are:

YBTC NEWS, – Chairman of the All Progressives Congress’ presidential screening committee, John Oyegun, on Friday said 99 percent of its presidential aspirants agreed to support a consensus candidate.

Mr Oyegun made the remark while presenting the committee’s report to the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu.

“We engaged every aspirant on the issue of consensus,” he told Adamu.

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening panel, John Odigie Oyegun, on Friday gave reasons why some presidential aspirants were disqualified.

Jonathan Makes U-Turn,  Joins APC , accepts presidential nomination forms


YBTC NEWS – Barely 48 hours after disassociating himself from moves by some groups to draft him into the 2023 presidential race, former President Goodluck Jonathan has finally made up his mind to vie for the top post. Nigeria is set to go to the polls next year in a crowded contest parading many contestants in both the ruling APC and several opposition parties, including the main opposition PDP.

On May 9, Mr Jonathan had rejected presidential expression of interest and nomination forms bought for him by people, described as nomadic Fulani pastoralists and Almajiri communities.

He was quoted as saying that it was an insult for people to buy the form for him without his consent but the former president has now made u-turn on the issue.
