Politics / Christmas: Ekiti State Workers Unhappy With Fayose by alberson(f): 6:37pm On Dec 21, 2015
Civil servants in Ekiti state have lamented the non-
payments of salaries by the administration of
Governor Ayodele Fayose.
Some of the workers in the state who spoke with
our correspondent in Ado-ekiti said the governor is
owing them 3 months salaries but has paid a minute
percentage of their basic take home as Christmas
bonus. This, the workers said is a complete
departure from what transpired during the
administration of Kayode Fayemi.
“Why must it be us that will always bear the brunt of
every bad situation? When things are going well they
are the ones that enjoy most and when things are not
fine they still enjoy and we the masses suffer it. When
other states have started paying December salaries, for
example Cross River state we are here still hoping that
we would get October salaries. This is not fair.
“Do you know what our governor does? He goes round
the state telling people he is open and that it is this and
that but he all that does not affect his own convenience
ooo. I don’t know how a governor will not be deeply
worried that his people are suffering and not getting
paid regularly. He will always put the blame on
someone and that usually is the president,” Mr
Koleosho disclosed.
Some of the workers who spoke to Naij.com
complained of the sudden change in the attitude of
the governor, Ayodele Fayose to the plights of
workers in the state adding that unlike past
administrations they are being paid a paltry 10
percentage of their basic salary as Christmas bonus.
Mr Taiwo, a local government employees in Ekiti
state says his son just got into university, and he
can barely raise the money to pay his fees because
salary is not coming as at when due.
“During former Governor Fayemi’s administration I was
paid ₦8,000 as Christmas bonus but Fayose paid me
₦2,992. What does he want us to do with that in this
period where only fuel scarcity can consumed times 5
of that amount in a day?” Mrs Anifowese, a level 9
primary school teacher lamented.
A cross section of the workers were of the opinion
that the governor should squarely face the
herculean task of governing the state, instead of
preoccupying himself with being the most outspoken
opposition governor in Nigeria.
A teacher in one of the public schools in Ikere-ekiti,
a town 10 minutes’ drive from the state capital, Mr
Adesanya said that the governor has failed woefully
in meeting the expectations of workers in the state.
“So far, he has failed completely. He doesn’t even care
that much as he used to when he first became the
governor of our state. He is not the kind of governor we
voted for. He said he has changed and those things he
promised us have not materialized. And he doesn’t
seem to care that is the most annoying things.”
Responding to a question raised by a civil servant
during a recent meeting with workers in Ado-ekiti
that she cannot pay her children’s school fees
because of the delay in salary payments, Governor
Fayose was alleged to have angrily replied that he
would not sell his children to pay workers’ salaries.
According to a primary school teacher who simply
identified himself as Omotosho, the actions of the
governor of late has been below the acceptable
standard.
“He is not acting like a governor. He is acting as if he is
the president of everything……everybody. Like a god that
cannot be spoken against. If you make noise he will
shut you down. The case of the woman that told him
she could not pay her children’s school fees because
he has not been paying regularly and the way he
answered is a perfect example of what we are
experiencing at the moment,” the primary school
teacher said.
The primary school teacher was however hopeful
that the next year will turn out better for workers
and residents of the state.
“I hope that next year will be better than this year. It is
my prayer that the governor will do the right thing and
always avoid wrong advisers,” Mr. Omotosho
concluded.
Efforts to reach the special adviser to Governor
Ayodele Fayose, Mr Lere Olayinka to respond to
some of these issues proved abortive.
Reacting to the non-payment of salaries amongst
other things a loyalist of the governor and house of
assembly member representing Ilawe-ekiti
Constituency I, Honourable Onigiobi Olawale Fawale
said workers in the state know the true situation the
state has found itself.
He reaffirmed Governor Fayose’s commitment to
ensuring that workers and residents in the state are
well prioritized in his administration.
He also debunked rumours that the governor is
planning to retrench workers adding that the
governor is fully dedicated to carrying out people
sensitive policies.
“The governor cannot purposely set up to frustrate and
wicked workers in the state. He is like a father to me
and I can assure you that the reasons why salaries are
not promptly paid are not the governor’s doing. They
are not his faults. We all know those that are causing
this problem,” he said.

Politics / Rivers Rerun: Prepare Your Will – Dakuku To Wike by alberson(f): 10:17am On Dec 19, 2015
Governor Warns INEC Against Rigging
THE governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Dakuku Peterside, yesterday told Governor Nyeson Wike to go and write his will.

Dakuku spoke in reaction to a statement accredited to Wike where he said that any official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) posted to the state to rig election should be prepared for the consequences by writing his will.

Wike had said that no ungodly grand conspiracy to take over the state would succeed, insisting that God will disappoint the evil conspirators.

Speaking at the Rivers State PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt, during a one-day seminar organised for party officials and government functionaries, Wike told the people to look beyond him to stop the evil wind of enslavement being propagated by conspirators.

The governor said that anyone detailed by the conspiring forces to rig election in the state would face dire consequences as Rivers people will never be enslaved by any political group interested in stealing the state resources.

Addressing a mammoth crowed who received him at the Port Harcourt International Airport on arrival from Abuja, Dakuku said no Nigerian would die, urging Wike to rather go and write his will.

According to Dakuku,”I heard that Wike threatened that if they killed one person before, that they are prepared to kill 100 people this time, and he told INEC officials that would be posted to Rivers State to write their will.
“Wike is daring the will of God, the will of Nigerian people and the will of Rivers people. Not one single person will die. Wike should rather go and write his will; his speech is a sign of frustration.

“What we are noticing is the crying of a frustrated man. Let me tell you, 50 per cent of those in PDP government are already members of APC, they are just temporary members in the government to collect their share.”

Politics / Pdp’s Call For Truth Commission Diversionary, Says APC by alberson(f): 1:24pm On Dec 15, 2015
THE All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday
dismissed the call by the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) for the institution of a National Truth
Commission, describing it as diversionary tactics to
stop investigation into the arms scandal.
National Secretary Alhaji Mai Mala Buni said in a
statement in Abuja that this was not the time for
setting up a truth commission, but a time for probe,
justice and recovery of looted funds.

In the statement, entitled: “Ignore PDP’s diversionary
tactics”, the party said the citizens should not be
swayed by the latter-day anti-corruption recipes of
the PDP.

It added that “these are mere diversionary tactics to
earn undeserved sympathy after its government had
grounded the nation’s economy to a complete halt”.
The APC said President Muhammadu Buhari
remained focused, unwavering and non-selective in
his anti-corruption crusade and was ready to fast
track the trial of corrupt public officers.
The party stressed that only those who are guilty of
corruption should be jittery and unconvinced that the
“war on corruption is winnable”.

The APC asked the PDP to first remove the moth in
its eyes by prevailing on some of its high-ranking
members, who were under investigation, to
cooperate with relevant agencies, rather than finding
faults with the anti-corruption agenda, which had
received international rating.

The statement reads: “The opposition PDP woke up
from its slumber on Sunday by joining issues with
the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari
on his widely-acclaimed anti-corruption drive,
especially the ongoing probe of $2 billion arms deals
and mind-boggling extra-budgetary expenditures in
the last five years.

“In a press release, the PDP approbated and
reprobated to show that it is uncomfortable with the
war against corruption by the President. While giving
a tacit support for anti-corruption crusade to avoid
incurring the wrath of Nigerians, it engaged in some
ambiguous semantics to call for ‘an honest, holistic,
and total war against corruption’.

“The body language of the PDP was clear on Sunday
that it was uncomfortable with the ongoing probe of
some of its stalwarts who are being investigated for
looting the treasury with impunity. The opposition
party must realise that the day of reckoning has
come; there is no more hiding place for corrupt
elements which it harbours in large number.”
It added: “This is not the time for any National Truth
Commission, it is time for probe, justice and
recovery of slush and looted funds. We do not want
any party to hide under any kangaroo commission to
cover up its dirty leanings. Today, many Nigerians
cannot afford three square meals because of the
mismanagement of the economy by the previous
administration.

“Overwhelmed by the shocking details of corruption,
which characterised the last administration , the
opposition party demanded a probe of how the All
Progressives Party(APC) funded its presidential
campaigns for the 2015 general elections.
“The PDP knew that APC fought and won its
electoral battle basically on the goodwill of the
masses. We did not fund our campaign with slush or
corrupt funds; we challenge the opposition to provide
evidence to the contrary.

“The 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act have
provided guidelines on campaign funds. We are
ready to account for every kobo spent any time we
are requested to do so. We are a party noted for
managing scarce resources; we are not a wasteful
party like PDP.

“APC governors were not compelled to finance our
presidential campaign under any guise. And no one
has been made a minister in this government to
cover up slush funds used for President Buhari’s
campaign. The PDP must be daydreaming. If it had
such allegations, why did it keep quiet during the
screening and confirmation of all ministers by the
Senate in its hallowed chamber.

“The opposition should stop crying over split milk.
The era of politics of desperation is gone for good.
No feeble attempt to discredit Buhari’s
administration will work again. The PDP has tried all
antics and failed. We urge the opposition party to
join the change train in the overall interest of
Nigeria.”

Business / Aviation Workers Accuse AMCON Of Running Down Aero by alberson(f): 1:16pm On Dec 15, 2015
Workers of Aero Airlines yesterday staged a peaceful
protest around the airport alleging that the Asset
Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) is
mismanaging funds injected into the carrier.
The workers spoke through the branch Chairman of
the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association
of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Comrade Emoapo Ayo-Ife.
The management of the airline is yet to comment on
the matter.
The chief executive officer of the public relation
agency managing the airline, Mr Simon Tumba, said
he has not been briefed by its client on the matter.
Ayo-Ife alleged that since 2011, when AMCON
invested huge sums of money into Aero, the airline
has not been making any headway.
He said when AMCON brought in the current Board
of Directors in 2011, the company had about 11
aircraft but lamented that it currently has only five
aircraft.
He called for the dissolution of the board alleging
that the huge sums invested in the airline to acquire
equipment could not be accounted for.
He said: “AMCON invested about N10billion in this
company (Aero Contractors Airline) since they came
here; when they came in, we had 11 aeroplane and
now we are down to five aircraft.
“They paid a $9million to a company in Brazil which
we are yet to retrieve and nobody is talking about all
that. “All we are asking for is a prudent management
and workers welfare. We want AMCON to dissolve
the board.

Politics / Dokpesi, Unable To Meet N400 Million Bail Condition, Spends Night In Kuje Prison by alberson(f): 11:08am On Dec 15, 2015
Media mogul Raymond Dokpesi, the chairman of African Independent Television (AIT) who is in the middle of the massive arms scandal concerning former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, is spending Monday night in Kuje prison because he is unable to meet the conditions of his bail.

Speaking with a SaharaReporters correspondent, a lawyer representing Mr. Dokpesi confirmed that the fallen media owner was remanded to Kuje prison in Abuja having failed to satisfy the N400 million or surety requirement for bail.

Earlier, presiding judge Gabriel Kolawole established bail conditions requiring two guarantors, one of whom must be a current or former public servant of Director rank or higher, and the second of whom mist be an entrepreneur in possession of Nigerian tax payments for the past three consecutive years. Both were required to provide “title deeds of landed properties in any part of Nigeria, the value of which must not be below N200 million.”

Mr. Dokpesi’s lawyer said that the difficulty of meeting these strict bail conditions forced Mr. Dokpesi to spend the night in Kuje prison, a facility that is like the jails average Nigerians are often sent to.

Mr. Dokpesi is facing six counts of money laundering for his involvement with Mr. Dasuki, who is alleged to have illegally provided money meant for military arms purchases to Mr. Dokpesi to produce video documentaries promoting the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2015 presidential election.

Crime / (PHOTO): Fake Naval Officers, Soldier Arrested For Extortion by alberson(f): 4:43pm On Dec 14, 2015
Police officers attached to the Ilado Police post, near the Ajakoyi Beach, have paraded four fake naval officers and a soldier for alleged extortion of residents. The suspects wearing military and navy uniform,
Vanguard reports that the suspects who were dressed in military uniform were apprehended in Lagos state at the weekend by youths at Ilado area of the state while they were fleeing in a canoe after escaping from police detention. Reports say the suspects were later handed over to operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (SARS) Lagos state command in Ikeja. A resident of the area, who gave his name as Wasiu Omojola, told Vanguard that: “We are predominantly fishermen but some of us do oil business. The military personnel used to come to extort money from us daily. “We didn’t even know that they were fake officers. They would come in military uniform. Their leader whom we later realized is an Army Sergeant would dress as an Army Lieutenant Commander. He would gather us and warn that the Army High Command had sent him on a special duty. “He told us that his group was on Joint Military operation. He then instructed us to contribute N2 million for his boss. We were able to raise N500, 000. The following day, they prevented us from doing our job, so we had to contribute another N300, 000. They still said it was not yet okay with them. “I don’t know how one of us reported the development to Army authorities who said that they didn’t send any team for joint military patrol to our area. When we got the information, we now mobilized against the self- acclaimed joint military patrol. “When they arrived the following day to resume their extortion, we arrested them. They did not believe it when we took them to the Police. We were later informed by the same Police that the suspects escaped from their cell, so we mobilized again and gave them a hot chase. We later arrested them and brought them to SARS.” It was gathered from a source within the police that the Nigerian Army confirmed that the suspect who paraded himself as a lieutenant was actually a sergeant. “The Army has taken him for court-martial but we have written to the Army that after the court – martial, the man should be brought back to the Police for proper prosecution,” the source said. Speaking to newsmen, one of the suspects who gave his name as Oche said: “Well, there is no job in the country. My friend who is an Army Sergeant brought the idea of going to collect money from those doing illegal oil businesses. The sergeant provided me with the uniform that I am putting on now. I don’t know about others. Sergeant is the one sharing our loot. I got N50, 000 three times but I could not believe it when we were arrested. It is true, we escaped from Police cell. We broke through the window protectors. It was while we were escaping through the waterside that we were re- arrested and handed over to SARS.”

Politics / Ex-pdp Chairman Blasts Jonathan Over High Level Of Impunity by alberson(f): 4:30pm On Dec 14, 2015
The former PDP chairman believes ex-president Goodluck Jonathan supervised a terrible period of impunity.
While calling on Nigerians to have faith in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as it needs time to formulate and execute policies and programmes to erase the myriads of socio- economic challenges currently plaguing the nation, the former Enugu state governor said: “the president came in with tremendous goodwill. It’s not easy in the Third World for an opposition party to defeat a sitting government. “So for Buhari to have done that shows the measure of goodwill he came to office with. “Secondly, I believe that what he promised our people was something that was timely; I’m of the PDP but that government had reached a point of impunity. “The level of impunity is being shown by the investigations that are going on indicating that we needed somebody who promised us that he was going to fight corruption and to bring sanity to government expenditure.
“I’m one of those who believe that no Nigerian should go to bed hungry and that this country has enough resources to feed us and to provide enabling environment to achieve our God-given talent. “But when government’s resources are so plundered as they have been done by other administrations, you can see that the waste in governance has made it impossible for Nigerians to reach their manifest potential. “So when a president is coming on board and promises that he is going to fight corruption and people voted, so these are the two big credentials that the president came on-board with. “They are not things that can be achieved overnight. The problem is that we have suffered so long that Nigerians have become impatient. “They want to be removed from the fire they are in today by tomorrow but government doesn’t work like that.
“It takes time for policies to be formulated and to be implemented, so what I want to plead with Nigerians is to give the president time. “I believe he has brought in a solid team of ministers to help him and this is the time the work now starts. “Let’s pray for him, let’s wish him the best and hope that he will be able to fulfill those promises he made to us.”

Politics / Soyinka Takes A Swipe At Fayose, Advises Buhari by alberson(f): 1:05pm On Dec 10, 2015
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has described Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state as a tout. Speaking on Wednesday, December 9, at the 10th anniversary of the annual Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, he said Fayose attacked judges publicly without any consequences. He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop impunity especially by the security operatives in the country, Today.ng reports. The Nobel Laureate also urged the government to ensure the laws of the country are respected, including the order of the courts. He noted that the Nigerian military was in the habit of assaulting and harassing members of the public, which according to him does not portray the country as a democratic country. Soyinka said: “There must be an end to unlawful detention. If the court has granted someone a bail, it must be honoured, I don’t care what the offence is. “Anybody or institution that does this can only be compared to that tout in Ekiti. That Fayose, he is a tout. He descended on the judges and attacked them openly without any consequence .” He therefore, challenged security operatives in the country not to take laws into their own hands. Soyinka also insisted that the report of the inquiry into the recent attack by soldiers on the BRT buses in Lagos must be made public. He said the claim by the authorities that the matter had been dealt with militarily was not tenable. The colourful ceremony held last night at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos. Erstwhile Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Professor of Political Science, Attahiru Jega, who played an outstanding role in the success of the 2015 elections and veteran broadcaster Bimbo Oloyede were honoured with the Anti- Corruption Defender Award and the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence, respectively. The House of Representatives has wielded in into the lingering petroleum crisis as it has on Wednesday, December 9, asked its Committee on Petroleum Resources, Upstream and Downstream to probe the continued scarcity of the product in the country. The House intervention came on the heel of a motion moved by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama (PDP- Edo) which got the nod of the members of the House. Ogbeide-Ihana explained that Nigerians were passing through difficult time getting the product. He added that the cause of this problem is absent of a functional refineries to serve local demand, Vanguard reports. “This is responsible for the dependence on imported products, hence the regular fuel crisis in the country which is causing untold hardship to Nigerians,’’ the lawmaker said. According to him, the Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri refining and petrochemical companies were reported by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to have incurred debts amounting to about N120. 07 billion in August and September. “While their revenue in August was N146.617billion, their expenditure was N207.287 billion; in September, the revenue generated by the refineries was N112.514 billion and expenditure was pegged at N171.914 billion,’’ “The capacity utilisation of Warri and Kaduna refineries in September was said to be zero per cent as both plants did not process crude in that month. “The Port Harcourt Refining Company was reported to have produced at 4.15 per cent capacity which is a far cry from its installed capacity .’’ Nnamdi Agbo (PDP-Enugu) also called on the federal government to deregulate the oil and gas sector. Sergius Oseasochie (APC-Edo) advocated that the refineries should be handed over to competent and reliable companies to handle on behalf of the government. In his contribution, Hassan Saleh (PDP-Benue) expressed worry that none of the companies issued licenses to establish refineries in the country had done something in that regard. Also contributing on the debate on the motion, the majority leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos) said that it was unfortunate that there is no explanation forthcoming on why the refineries had failed to function. Gbajabiamila wondered why refineries in other climes work while that of Nigeria failed to work. He caution against the idea of removing subsidy of petroleum product now as it will have adverse effect on the generality of the people.
