Foreign AffairsJUST IN: I Now Eat Dry Rice, Ousted Niger President Laments Hardship by Alchemy528(op): 8:01pm On Aug 09, 2023
Ousted President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, says he is being kept isolated and forced to eat dry rice.

Recall that on July 26, 2023, the military ousted Bazoum and suspended the constitution.

President Bola Tinubu, who is the Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had scheduled a meeting for Thursday after the 7-day ultimatum that the regional bloc issued for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum elapsed.

CNN quoted Bazoum in a series of text messages to a friend as saying he had been “deprived of all human contact” since Friday, with no one supplying him food or medicine.According to the overthrown president, he had been living without electricity for a week, a normal occurrence for all Nigeriens after Nigeria cut off electric power in response to the coup.

Bazoum said all of the perishable food he was supplied with has since gone bad, and he is now eating dry pasta and rice.

Despite his isolation, Bazoum has been in contact with the outside world.

Though denied the chance to speak with acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland during her visit to Niamey, the Nigerien capital, on Monday, Bazoum spoke with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on phone.

Daily Trust had reported how Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, 14th Emir of Kano, met the coup leaders to open a window for negotiation.

Sources told this newspaper that Sanusi went in personal capacity but briefed President Bola Tinubu ahead of the trip.

ECOWAS will hold another meeting in Abuja on Thursday over the coup.

PoliticsPresidential Tax Committee Opposes Revenue Collection By Customs by Alchemy528(op): 2:58pm On Aug 09, 2023
The Nigeria Customs Service and 62 other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government should not collect revenue directly, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has said.

Oyedele spoke Wednesday when he featured as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily breakfast programme.

According to him, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is best suited to collect revenue for the MDAs.

He said Nigeria’s revenue collection from taxes is one of the lowest in the world but the cost of collection is high.He said: “Ironically, our cost of collection is one of the highest. And the reason for that is that we’ve got all manners of agencies. The Federal Government alone, we have 63 MDAs that were given revenue targets last year, no; actually in the 2023 budget.

“And two things that would come up from that: on one hand, these agencies are being distracted from doing their primary function which is to facilitate the economy. Number two, they were not set up to collect revenue, so, they won’t be able to collect revenue efficiently.

“So, move those revenue collection functions to the FIRS. It has two advantages: the cost of collection and efficiency will improve, these guys will focus on their work, and the economy will benefit as a result.

“If you are Customs, focus on trade facilitation, border protection and if you are NCC (Nigerian Communications Commission), just regulate telecommunications. You are not set up to collect revenue.

“It can be your revenue and someone else can collect it for you. There will be more transparency because you see what is being collected and is accounted for properly. It is also a way of holding ourselves to account as to how we spend the money we collect from the people.”

Car TalkEnugu Residents React To Ban On Tinted Glasses By State Government by Alchemy528(op): 2:27pm On Aug 09, 2023
The Residents of Enugu State have continued to react to the recent ban on tinted glasses for vehicles plying state roads by the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ban was announced through a memo signed by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

In separate interviews with NAN on Wednesday in Enugu, some legal experts expressed different views on the legal implications of the pronouncement and it’s work-ability.
A civil rights lawyer, Olu Omotayo, said that the pronouncement was unimplementable because it was not backed by any law.

“It remains a mere pronouncement by the executive, it has no backing of the law and therefore cannot be implemented by the state government.

“It is the constitutional responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force to ban the use of tinted glasses, ” he said.

According to him, the task force set up by the state do not have the legal power to either prosecute or fine offenders.

Also speaking, a constitutional lawyer, John Nwobodo, said the state had the right to put measures in place to check insecurity in the state.

He, however, said that the issue of tinted glasses, by law, was the sole responsibility of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

“It will be difficult to implement that law because it is only the IGP that can take that responsibility.

“The state can only succeed if they co-opt the security into it but it will be difficult to implement at the state level,” he said.

He said the constitution required that offenders be charged to the Federal High Court, which the task force lacked the powers.Another resident, Mr Ignatius Orji, said that the pronouncement was ambiguous and very difficult to implement without the legal instruments

by the State House of Assembly.

“It will bring confusion and a lot of people will resist it due to it’s flimsy nature.

“I am certain that many lawyers will challenge it’s implementation in court,” he said.

Orji advised the state government to collaborate with the IGP , to fine tune whatever plans it had to check insecurity in the state.

Talk about your feelings with someone you feel comfortable with. If you're religious, do something which helps you feel connected with your faith. This could be praying or speaking to your religious leader. Make a list of values and beliefs that are important to you, and think of times when you've lived by these.
HealthStrike Continues, Health Ministry Hasn’t Spoken To Us – Resident Doctors by Alchemy528(op): 2:17pm On Aug 09, 2023
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has said its indefinite strike continues, though the planned protest has been put on hold.

NARD President, Dr Innocent Orji, said this in an interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, adding that the Federal Ministry of Health had not reached out to the association.

NARD had commenced an indefinite strike on July 26 after a two-week ultimatum to the federal government for the implementation of all its demands elapsed.

Its demands, among others, include immediate payment of the 2023 medical residency training fund (MRTF) and the immediate release of the circular on one-for-one replacement. The association also demanded payment of skipping arrears and upward review of consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS) in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS.

The NARD President said, “Yes we put on hold the protest that was supposed to start this morning (Wednesday) but the strike is continuing. We will review again in 72 hours, that is the position of our national executive council.

“We started this strike about two weeks ago after series of notices and ultimatum given to the government but it looks as if there was no move on the part of the government to resolve the issue that led to the strike.

“Being concerned about Nigerians we felt that it will not be good to just remain on strike without making effort to quickly resolve the issue so that we can come back to work.

“So our members met on Saturday. We still gave another window for government to meet us and resolve the issue before the protest.”

On the Ministry of Health’s efforts to resolve the issues, Orji said, “You see the Ministry of Health has not spoken to us since we started the strike. Unfortunately, if they said they have done that, then we need evidence.”

“We saw what they were doing, some of the government officials who are supposed to call us and take responsibility, they didn’t call. They were just issuing statement,” he added.
