Family / A True Depiction Of Humanity And Being Your Brother's Keeper Shown In Lagos by alfanio(m): 8:25am On Sep 23, 2017
Looking pale and frightened , Mrs. Onyinyechi
Godwin, cut the true picture of a distressed
widow . Flanked on both sides by her five
children , she looked sober given the
torturous experiences she had had in the past
and the future which , seemingly , felt so
uncertain.
For the past three months, Onyinyechi had
been living on the streets of Lagos with her
children . Since the landlord of her one-room
apartment in Iyana Ipaja sent her packing for
not paying her rent six months after it
expired, she had been living at Alasia
junction , beside a popular filling station in
Oshodi area of Lagos.
In a chat with our correspondent on Tuesday ,
the 32 -year -old woman said she had to take
to the streets when no help was coming her
way, adding that hunger was the family’ s
main problem .
Given the hardship they had been through ,
her eldest child was already learning to run
after people to beg for money .
Narrating the circumstances surrounding her
coming to Lagos , she explained that she left
her town in Orlu , Imo State , shortly after her
husband , John , died of stroke and she and
her children almost died of hunger. Perhaps
she would have found a ready shelter in her
husband ’s house and live on whatever her
husband left behind , but unknown to her ,
her late husband had a wife and four
children , which she said she never knew
about. Thus , after his death, she and her five
children were treated as outcasts .
She said , “ They called me prostitute ,
husband -snatcher and different names. I felt
so bad. Due to the shame and hunger, since
there was nothing to live on, more so that the
person I was working for as a stylist wasn ’ t
paying me , I decided to come to Lagos in
2015 . Then , I was pregnant with my last child .
“ There was no option but to leave the village
because we were going to die of hunger and I
didn ’t want to lose my children .”
Speaking further, she said she and her late
husband met in Owerri and became husband
and wife . She said she insisted her late
husband should take her to his village but he
was always making excuses. “ When he was
very sick, his relatives came around and took
me to his village where I met his four
children and wife , who told me I couldn ’t live
with them . I felt betrayed.
“ We became close because he was helping me
with money when I was in need. I didn’ t
know he left his family in the village and
rented a house in Owerri where we lived .
After his death, my family members fought
me for marrying a married man, but honestly
I didn’ t know he was married .”
Apparently confused with the way things
turned out for her when her landlord at
Iyana Ipaja evicted her in July, Onyinyechi
took to the streets with her five children ,
including a one-year old .
Asked why she decided to come to Lagos
where she didn ’t know anyone when she
could have sought help from her siblings in
the village , she said nobody, including her in-
laws , was willing to help her as most of them
were also struggling financially .
“ My only brother is dead and my two sisters
didn ’t help me. They said I should stop
disturbing them because they didn’ t have ,
because anytime I visited them , they only
gave me food to eat and transport fare . I
knew I couldn ’ t continue like that , so I found
my way to Lagos so I could work, raise
money and take care of my children ,” she
added .
She pointed out that she could have found
herself a job , even if it was to sell sachet
water, but that she couldn ’t move around
with five children, all of whom had dropped
out of school and are currently struggling to
survive.
She said , “ I ’m not lazy, but I also can ’t roam
the streets with five children . I just need
help ; hunger is my main problem , ” she
added .
“ Everything around me has been frustrating.
I wasn ’t making progress , rather , things were
getting worse , and when I was evicted from
the house at Iyana Ipaja, I thought of going
back to the village to face the hardship, but I
didn ’t have transport fare, so I went to
Oshodi to stay and the only place I could
afford was the street.
“ There were times we didn’ t eat at all, and
there were times all of us shared N 100 loaf of
bread. We were living on alms . People
thought I was mad but I wasn ’ t. Some people
would come to me and ask what was wrong ,
but that was the end . At a time, one of my
children had infection in her throat and it was
really swollen, but I kept hoping it would go
because I couldn ’t afford to buy drugs .”
She said they usually slept on the corridor of
a shop at night and during the day when the
owner of the shop was around; they would
stay on the street , where they got alms
occasionally .
Looking at her from the distance , especially
before brief help came her way , some could
conclude that she needed mental help ,
looking at how tattered she was and seeing a
mother of five living on the street , in the rain
and sunshine. But Onyinyechi is not mad ,
even though overwhelmed by the
circumstances around her .
However, brief respite came her way last
week when a passerby, Mrs. Bosede
Shofarasin, spotted her in the rain and
offered her some help . Shofarasin told our
correspondent that she first saw them at the
spot on Monday but that while passing the
same route on Friday, they were still there as
they covered themselves with nylon due to
the heavy rain.
She added , “I couldn ’t hold it , so I told Mrs.
Solape Ademulegun-Agbi , who immediately
offered some help. We contacted the
Akinpelu police station and the DPO gave us a
policewoman , Supol Gladys , who , in company
with another female officer , met us at the
scene. We then contacted Oshodi Local
Government and one man , Ebenezer, from
the child welfare department , came and said
we should go to the state secretariat at
Alausa .”
She said, “ In the office we went to, the
ministry official asked if Onyinyechi thought
people pick money on the streets of Lagos .
The woman said ‘so you came to Lagos with
these kids to kill them and make them
suffer. ’ She called me in and said we should
take them to Alakara police station and that
we shouldn ’t tell them at the station that we
had been to the secretariat. She said they
would have to refer her back to her state of
origin.
“ On hearing that, Onyinyechi ran away with
the children but I was able to stop her , and
she begged that she would rather return to
the street than be taken back to Imo State ,
knowing that nothing awaited her there. So ,
we left the secretariat.”
Interestingly, a staff of Oshodi local
government , Mr . Mamora , took them in,
temporarily .
Ademulegun- Agbi, said they were able to
meet the local government chairman, Mr .
Bolaji Muse-Ariyo, who also contacted a not -
for -profit organisation, Out-of- School
Children Empowerment Foundation , which
took them in temporarily .”
Meanwhile, on seeing the children , drenched
and looking malnourished , Ademulegun-Agbi ,
who is the proprietor of Hillcroft Nursery
and Primary School, said she would give the
children scholarship in the school until help
would come their way , noting that she
wouldn’ t want to overshoot the capacity of
her school .
“ Government needs to help . Even though she
is from Imo State , she is first of all a Nigerian
and whether she is Igbo or not should not
matter . The least we can do is provide some
help , otherwise she would lose her sanity .
It ’s not as if I have a big school or I have the
space, but I ’m appealing to government to get
involved. I plead with Nigerians to help this
woman and her wonderful children; they
need urgent help ,” she added .

Politics / ICYMI: EFCC Inspects Diezani’s N7bn Dubai Properties, Moves For Forfeiture by alfanio(m): 9:23pm On Sep 18, 2017
Operatives of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission have visited two
mansions in Dubai allegedly belonging to a
former Minister of Petroleum Resources ,
Diezani Alison- Madueke.
The properties , located at E 146 Emirates Hill
and J5 Emirates Hill, are said to be worth
74, 000 ,000 dirham (N 7 .1 bn) .
Emirates Hill, which has been described as
the Beverly Hills of the United Arab Emirates,
is home to some of the richest men in the
world including billionaire Chairman of the
Stallion Group, Sunil Vaswani .
Others , who are Diezani’s neighbours, include
the immediate past Prime Minister of
Pakistan , Nawaz Sharif; a former President of
Pakistan , Asif Ali Zardari; and Robert Mugabe
junior , the son of the President of Zimbabwe
and one of Africa ’s longest serving leaders,
President, Robert Mugabe .
A source within the EFCC told our
correspondent that the anti-graft agency was
already applying for the forfeiture of the
properties through the Office of the Attorney
General of the Federation .
If the commission is able to clear all legal
hurdles and ensure the final forfeiture of the
property, it would bring the total amount of
cash and assets finally recovered from
Diezani to $ 200 m ( N 70bn) .
A detective , who did not want his name in
print , said the anti -graft agency would exploit
the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty the
Federal Government had recently signed with
the government of the UAE .
The agreements, signed by President
Muhammadu Buhari , are Agreement on
Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters ,
Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Civil
and Commercial Matters, Agreement on the
Transfer of Sentenced Persons and an
Extradition Treaty .
The source stated , “We have informed the
UAE authorities that from our investigation ,
we believe Diezani bought the properties
with the proceeds of crime. The whole
process is still ongoing but with the MLAT ,
signed by President Buhari, it has made work
a lot easier for us.”
The detective explained that before the
Federal Government signed the treaty, the
UAE law prevented foreign officials from
having access to properties in the country
without the express permission of its owner.
He added that with the new treaty , the UAE
authorities were more cooperative and would
readily give information of properties from
their Land Registry System.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Presidential
Advisory Committee Against Corruption,
Prof . Itse Sagay( SAN), who hailed Buhari for
signing the treaty, told The PUNCH that some
corrupt senators , who also owned properties
in Dubai , would be made to forfeit them .
Sagay also disagreed with some legal experts
who said the Dubai treaty would need to be
ratified by the National Assembly before it
could be activated.
He said, “ The UAE MLAT is not a treaty as
such but an agreement; so, it will be operated
without their (senators ) approval.
“ So, let that start worrying them (senators ) .
He ( President) will implement it directly . So,
those of them that have acquired properties in
Dubai and other Middle -East countries should
kiss their properties good bye . ”

Sports / Re: Odegbami: The ‘killing’ Of Liberty Stadium by alfanio(m): 11:44am On Sep 18, 2017
Corruption stopped Nigeria from becoming what she should have being.
Sports / Odegbami: The ‘killing’ Of Liberty Stadium by alfanio(m): 11:43am On Sep 18, 2017
I anchor a new sports programme on Africa’s
largest television network, the NTA, with a
conservative domestic viewership of some 60
million Nigerians in all corners of the country. The
live programme,The Sports Parliament, has been
running for 10 weeks.
This past week the topic of conversation and
examination for the seven parliamentarians in
session on the show, was of sports facilities and
infrastructure in Nigeria with particular
focus on the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, a
sprawling sports complex, and once a monument
for an authentic sports development and sports
engagement programme in Nigeria that has now
gone bad. Today the stadium is wasting in
dereliction, lying idle and decaying in a sea of
humongous opportunities and possibilities.
During the programme, the conversation on the
National Stadium in Lagos kept reminding me of
another even bigger sports infrastructural
disaster, one that must also be brought to public
attention so that history will document the facts of
the incalculable damage done to a national
heritage, a collection of sports edifices destroyed
through the deliberate acts of incompetency and
misdeed by a few greedy sports administrators in
power at the time, and well known to Nigerians.
They have retired now from the service, are
‘enjoying’ the spoils of their actions, and have left
the rest of the country to carry the burdens and
bear the consequences of their ignoble acts.
There are other such similar stories of wasting
and mostly idle facilities around the country that
also must be told. But here is the story of the
greatest edifice yet in our country’s history that
was destroyed before our very eyes and is now
left to rot in the dungeon of history.
I paid my first visit to the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan,
as a student of The Polytechnic Ibadan when I
went to watch the finals of the Nigerian Challenge
Cup (the FA Cup) played in that wonderful sports
edifice between Bendel Insurance FC of Benin and
Mighty Jets FC of Jos. That was eons ago in
1971. How time flies.
I was a teenager straight out of a ‘bush’ closet in
the hinterland of Nigeria, from the serene,
beautiful, cool, tin mining city of Jos high up in a
bowl on the plateau some 2000 feet above sea
level. It was a huge culture shock to be thrown
from that background into the middle of a
developed, heavily populated, most politically
active environment of Ibadan, the largest city in
West Africa then, and capital of one of the most
culturally advanced, sophisticated and educated
Black tribes on earth – the Yoruba.
I was fascinated by the city – the sprawling
University of Ibadan, the Cocoa House
skyscraper, the wide boulevard on Queen
Elizabeth road, the University Teaching hospital
and Liberty Stadium! All of these were built and
remained functional since around the period of
Nigeria’s Independence in 1960! Naturally, it was
the stadium that held the greatest fascination for
me.
On that memorable evening in 1971, I had the
opportunity of my first visit to the stadium.
The stadium had a massive reputation at that
time, particularly following the world boxing title
fight between Nigeria’s Dick Tiger and America’s
Gene Fulmer in July 1963 transmitted by Africa’s
first television station around the world from
Ibadan, the first city in Africa to set up a television
station! Nigeria’s Dick Tiger fought and won that
fight to become the world’s welterweight
champion.
That was the stadium to host the first FA Cup final
outside Lagos. The match itself was moved to
Ibadan from Lagos, following the controversy
generated by the first match at the King George V
stadium (Onikan Stadium) in Lagos. The match
had ended abruptly in confusion with the last kick
of the ball in that match taken by late Samuel
Garba Okoye. As he struck it, the ball and the long
blast of the whistle ‘sailed’ simultaneously
together into the Bendel Insurance goal. Was it the
signal of a goal? Or was it the signal of the end of
the match?
In the ensuing mayhem, no one was sure what the
decision of the referee was.
The crowd incursion that followed the final whistle
did not help matters.
The result of that match was decided later that
evening in the NFA boardroom. The goal was
awarded to Mighty Jets of Jos, making the final
scores 2 – 2. A replay was ordered but this time
the match would be played in the more secure,
better stadium and immaculate turf of the world
class Liberty Stadium in Ibadan!
That’s how I had my first opportunity to watch an
FA Cup final as well as see and experience Liberty
Stadium.
Liberty stadium had a capacity of 25,000. It was
an all-seater stadium with an underground
entrance leading right into the main playing pitch,
an architectural wonder at the time and still
considered something special even today in the
world of stadia design.
Liberty stadium, with its first class drainage and
watering systems, immaculate lush, flat,
greenBermuda grass turf, was way ahead of its
time even in 1971.
The turf and its daily maintenance regimen were a
major tourist attraction. It was not uncommon to
see hundreds of students from schools from all
over Western Nigeria at the stadium early in the
mornings on excursion, to watch the daily
synchronized sprinkler system of watering, as
well as the grass mowing techniques of cutting
patterns on the field surface, all coordinated by a
highly UK-trained staff of pioneer professional
stadium managers and grounds men led by late
Chief Ogunyemi. This team, under Ogunyemi,
became the bedrock of stadium management and
groundsmanship in Nigeria.
In the mid-1990s, the federal government took
over the ownership of Liberty Stadium in
preparation for bidding and probably
hosting Nigeria ‘99, the FIFA World Youth football
championship.
An Israeli company was contracted to do the
renovation and expansion work in the stadium.
The work took a few years, but one year into the
renovation work, the head engineer of the project,
lamented to us in a private chat at the stadium at
the time that what they met underground the
Liberty Stadium field was way ahead of anything
they had ever handled even in Europe. They were
absolutely stunned at the sophisticated drainage
and watering system in place, and that there was
no need to have excavated anything and replaced
it with an untested underground watering system
calledCell system that they had been contracted
to do. Israel he confessed did not even have such
a system!
Prophetically the entire work was a disaster. The
damage was irreparable. Liberty Stadium that
used to be the hub of social and sports activity in
the whole of Western Nigeria, ‘died’!
No decent sports event, of national or international
dimension, has taken place in that venue again
since then.
The legacy built by the sage, Chief Obafemi
Awolowo, and left behind to develop and promote
the best culture of sports in Nigeria was
permanently destroyed by greedy and, probably,
ignorant sports administrators in the NSC/
Federal Ministry of Sports of that era.
That edifice is now a shadow, a colossal national
disgrace, a monumental disaster, a psychological
depressant, a permanent eyesore, a skeleton in
the sun, a daily reminder of how a few Nigerians
have raped our country and destroyed our
heritage.

Properties / FG, States Agree On Monthly Rent Payment by alfanio(m): 9:42am On Sep 07, 2017
Nigerians may start paying property rent on a monthly basis going by the latest resolution between the federal and state governments on the matter, OKECHUKWU NNODIM reports The clamour for the monthly payment of rent by clients in the housing sector received attention at the recently concluded sixth meeting of the National Council on Lands , Housing and Urban Development . The council is the highest gathering of senior officials from the federal and state governments , as well as stakeholders and experts in the built industry . At the meeting of permanent secretaries during the council, senior government officials from the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory, as well as those from the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing ( Works /Housing sector) agreed to enact a law that would allow monthly rental payments across the country. In a 52- page report on the meeting of permanent secretaries at the sixth NCLHUD , which was obtained by our correspondent from the FMPWH in Abuja , the officials also resolved that the law would be enforced, as they noted that its enforcement would enhance access to housing finance. The Minister of Power, Works and Housing , Babatunde Fashola , recently charged property developers to reduce their rents and the value of properties in consideration of the economic hardship across the country . He advised them to work out ways of tackling the problem of high house rents and advance payments , particularly in major cities across the country . Fashola had said, “ Let me just ask you a question since everybody is here. Is there nothing that we can do in this country about this practice of demanding rent for two, three years in advance from people who get their salaries monthly in arrears? Is there nothing that can be done ? We can ’t continue like this. ” The minister , while buttressing his argument , insisted that operators in the sector must question the practice, stressing that the increase in the cost of other commodities could also be as a result of high rents being charged by developers and landlords. He said, “ We must first of all question the practice , look at its strengths and weaknesses and its damage to the entire economy. For instance , as a minister , my salary is N 900 ,000 ; so, when you ask me to go and bring rent for two years in advance that I have not earned , and I actually bring it , shouldn’t you start worrying? “ So, when you suddenly see that the prices of water, food , etc ., begin to spike, are we really gaining? Because one way or the other, I ’m going to get back what you collected from me . It ’s a matter of conscience. Can you pay for a taxi before you board it ?” In order to address the issue , permanent secretaries from the relevant agencies in the federal and state governments resolved at the meeting during the sixth NCLHUD to produce a law that would allow the monthly payment of rent. In the Memorandum on Provision of Adequate and Affordable Housing, which was submitted at the meeting by the FMPWH , the council noted that the “ enactment of the law would allow monthly rental payments and its enforcement would enhance access to housing finance.” They also upheld that the rent -to- own scheme of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, if included in the housing finance policy, would address the problem of poor access to housing finance. They further recommended that all tiers of government should improve on intervention strategies to provide affordable housing, as well as provide enabling environment for active participation of the private sector in housing delivery . The permanent secretaries urged the federal and state governments to consider all income groups in their housing delivery programmes, and to encourage the development of secondary mortgage market in order to strengthen mortgage refinancing . At an earlier meeting with Fashola in Abuja, the Chairman , Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria , Mr . Olayinka Sonaike , stated that the pressure on operators from lenders with respect to the repayment of loans was one major factor that often warranted the demand for advance payment of rent by property developers. He , however, stated that if there were substantial mortgage loans from the FMBN , the situation would not be the same . In its submission on the matter at the sixth NCLHUD , the FMBN admitted that housing affordability had been a major challenge due to low purchasing power, but argued that while down payment on mortgage was up to 40 per cent and interest on mortgage loan was between 16 and 32 per cent , the FMBN’ s National Housing Fund Scheme offered six per cent interest on its loan products. The bank, in a memorandum it submitted at the council meeting , stated that its rent- to- own concept adopted transaction dynamics under which real estate property was leased to beneficiaries in exchange for monthly payments , with option to purchase the property at some point during the agreement period . It said, “ Under the agreement terms, the FMBN ( the landlord ) collects monthly rent payments from beneficiaries ( the tenants ) over a specified period to accrue what would have been a bulk equity contribution. “ Beneficiaries are given the opportunity to move into the properties as tenants from commencement of the transaction, and after a two- year period, the rental arrangement is converted to a mortgage transaction . Accordingly , the balance of the house price is repaid through mortgage repayments. ” The bank further stated that under the scheme, there would be improved mortgage inclusion and access to affordable housing to more Nigerians who would otherwise be unable to afford equity down payments . “ Up to 100 ,000 new homeowners could be created within the next three to four years through this product to boost the present administration’ s one -million-new - homeownership target,” it added . It urged the council to endorse the adoption of the rent-to -own concept by all tiers of government , in order to improve housing inclusion, growth and economic prosperity . The FMBN also stated that subject to the inputs of the council and the approval of the works and housing minister , the bank intended to pilot the rollout of the concept over a 12-month period , commencing with workers of the FMPWH and the mortgage institution .

Agriculture / Yam Export: Nigerian Farmers Begin Registration by alfanio(m): 11:53pm On Aug 02, 2017
Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria says it has commenced the registration of its members in the 36 states of the federation to
facilitate the yam export programme. Simon Irtwange, the Acting President of the association, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on
Wednesday in Abuja. Mr. Irtwange, who is also the
Chairman, Technical Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme,
said the registration was to
organise yam farmers across the
country to actualise the targets of
the export programme.
“We are registering yam farmers,
yam processors, yam marketers.
“At the corporate level, we are
registering corporate
organisations that are doing yam
farming, corporate yam farmers,
yam exporters, yam off-takers,
yam aggregators and affiliate
cooperatives.
“Registration has commenced all
over the country.
“So, that process is on-going now;
it is after we have registered that
all these training in collaboration
with IITA can commence
effectively.’’
He advised yam farmers across the
country to form and join
cooperatives societies to facilitate
export of their produce.
According to him, a container of yam is about
12,000 tubers and if you have 12,000 to 14,000
tubers as a cooperative, you can export a
container.
Mr. Irtwange said that the committee would
assist any farmers’ cooperative society by giving
them the templates and requirements to avoid
rejection of their produce at the international
market.
“Whatever we are doing at the level of the
technical committee, we are doing for the
benefit of the yam association.
“We are creating that environment for them to
be able to export their yams.
“They should farm as much as possible; we are
here to ensure that they get the best price for
their farm work.
“They will get premium price for the export
quality yam they are going to sell.
“So, we have to develop the market in such a
way that there are people over there in other
countries that will be ready to off-take from our
people here who are also ready to export.
“We want to build exporter-off-taker
relationship.’’
Mr. Irtwange appealed to the federal
government to establish more modern yam
conditioning centres to aid storage before
export.

Eric Teniola On May 1, 1959 , Nigerian Airways Limited was inaugurated during the tenure of Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola as Minister of Aviation giving Nigeria its fledging national carrier . Chief Raymond Njoku succeeded Akintola as the first Supervisory Minister to herald the new airline. The first board appointed by the government provided policy guidelines for the new Nigeria Airways was headed by Chief T .T . Solaru , while the first General Manager of the airline was an expatriate , Captain L. V . Messenger. Although the basic objectives of the new airline were to carry on the business of air transport, it was established to, among others , serve as national flag carrier and promote the image of Nigeria, and provide a back -up service for security and defence during the periods of national emergency . At the time the airline was firmed , there were 28 airports being maintained by the Ministry of Transport and Aviation . Two of the airports , Lagos and Kano , were designated as international airports while 12 others , including Port Harcourt, Calabar , Tiko ( Southern Cameroon ) , Ibadan , Benin, Enugu , Makurdi , Jos, Yola , Maiduguri , Kaduna, Zaria , Gusau and Sokoto, were opened up for domestic scheduled flight services. By April of 1977 , Nigeria Airways was operating a total of 202 flights every week between Lagos , Accra, Abidjan, Robertsfield, Freetown , Banjul and Dakar in West Africa ; Lagos, Kano , Rome and London on the Europe route and Lagos , Abidjan , Robertsfield and New York on the American route inclusive of all domestic airports . In October 1977 , for instance , the airline inaugurated a commercial flight to Kenya connecting Libreville (Gabon ) and Kinshasa ( Congo) . The following year , May 5 , and August 10 , 1978 , precisely, the airline inaugurated flight services from Lagos to New York via Accra and Robertsfield and from Lagos through Kano to Karachi via Jeddah in Saudi Arabia respectively . At the end of 1978 , the airline had made 27, 518 flight departures, carrying on its entire network , a total of one million, four hundred and forty four thousand, four hundred and thirty six ( 1, 444 ,436 ) passengers that represents a passenger load factor of over 73 per cent , the highest traffic for the airline since 1959. The airline ’s fleet at this period was made of eight F .27 , seven F .28, two B .727 , three B .737 , two B .707 and two DC 10 . In 1982, the airline carried a total of 2 ,138 ,378 passengers on its entire network with the domestic services taking the lion share of 1 ,713 ,455 passengers. It had a reasonably good share of the international market by taking 264 ,132 passengers. The traffic figures improved considerably in the following year with 1 ,704 ,803 passengers on domestic route and 299 , 325 on intercontinental. Traffic in the Africa region was 218 ,994 as against 160 ,791 of the previous year . The airline took delivery of six additional B .737 aircraft to augment its fleet during this period . In 1984 domestic traffic rose from 1 ,568 , 152 to 2 ,089 ,510 ( about 80 per cent increase) . Africa service also provided an increase of 46, 475 passengers over the previous year’ s figures . Intercontinental service in 1985 was 236 ,277 passengers as against 196 ,692 of the previous year. The Airbus was deployed to share international services with the DC 10 . The aircraft also had some share of services on the West Africa routes . During its operation, outstanding pilots including the likes of Bob Hayes , Rufus Orimoloye, Samuel Obioma , Paul Thahal , Bara Alwell -Brown , Akintaju , the late Olubunmi Oke, Nnachi Osakwe, Dele Ore, Joe Ibrahim , Ado Dahiru , Tunde Amusa , Olu Olumogba , Fola Akinkuotu, Bayo Sanyaolu, Tanko Afegbua , Kazeem Braimoh , Akin Odewunmi, Ade Ajibola, Bob Adegbulugbe, Don Chukwura and others worked for the airline . Outstanding Chief executives including Alhaji M. T. Bature , General Olu Bajowa, Air Vice Marshal Anthony Okpere, Group Captain Bernard Banfa, Alhaji Jamiu Ibrahim , Captain Wilson Atabo, Mr . J. Smit, Captain Usman Muazu , Captain Paul Thahal , Mr Andrew Agom, Group Captain Peter Gana , Captain Joe Ibrahim and Mr . Yomi Jones all presided over the affairs of the airline at one point or the other. All these revelations are contained in a 217 - page book titled WT 040 NIGERIA AIRWAYS ’ flight of Problems by Femi Ogunleye who was the spokesman for the airline for 25 years. Femi Ogunleye, who is now Kabiyesi Femi Ogunleye, the Towulade of Akinale in Abeokuta Local Government joined the airline in 1976 after working as the Daily Times correspondent at the Ikeja Airport with the likes of Kola Adesina, Francis Emelefoun/ Mike Edemereyo, Andrew Diojemaou/ James Bello /Richard Amayo , Sehinde Dagunduro, Tayo Falade , Lanre Adebo , Biodun Soremekun , Babson Adeyemi , Toye Akiyode , Kunle Egbeyemi , Tunde Lisboa , Jimi Aderinokun , Dapo Aderinola and Alhaji Adio Saka . Tragically, the airline stopped operation in 2003 . According to a news agency report, “ Plagued by mis-management, corruption and overstaffing ,” as of the time of closure, the airline had debts of more than US $60 ,000 ,000 ( equivalent to $ 78,115 , 051 in 2016 ), a poor safety record , and its operative fleet comprised a single aircraft flying domestic routes as well as two leased aircraft operating the international network . It was succeeded by virgin Nigeria .” Kabiyesi Ogunleye, a golf addict, lamented the death of the Nigerian Airways on page 193 of his book with an eulogy , “ I love my country I no go lie , Na inside am I go live and die , When e push me so, I push am so, E push me , I push am , I no go die (originally sung by a group of pro- democracy in Nigeria)”. No doubt, the book is a good read . For most of us who flew within and outside Nigeria till 2000 , Nigeria Airways was our first choice . The hospitality of the airline was second to none . The story of the Nigerian Airways is a sad story . Yet , those who killed the airline are laughing to the banks today while the workers of the airline are roaming the streets in perpetual penury. Till today, they have not been paid their entitlements including pensions. Thousands of them are affected and some I hear cannot afford to buy drugs for their health. Incidentally , Kenya Airways that was inaugurated in 1977 is still operating . Likewise, the Ethiopian Airline , founded in December 21, 1945 , is still operating . The South African Airways founded in 1934 is still in operation . After the Nigerian Airways ceased to operate in 2003 , President Olusegun Obasanjo set up a committee to probe those who killed the airline and ensure that the culprits were brought to book . The committee was headed by the then Minister of Defence , Gen. Theophilus Danjuma while the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation served as the secretariat of the committee. After the resignation of Danjuma as Minister of Defence , his successor , Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso took over the leadership of the committee. The committee submitted its report to President Obasanjo who directed full implementation of the committee’ s report . The names of the culprits and their companies were then handed over to the Nigeria Police , then headed by Alhaji Mustapha Balogun because at that time the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission which was inaugurated that year had not fully taken off until 2004. That was the last we heard about that issue . Today, the culprits are as free as the air . The fate of the Nigeria Airways is not different from the fate of the Nigeria Shipping Line established by the Federal Government in 1959 . In 1988 , for example , the company had 24 ships but by September 1995 , the company was liquidated and all its ships were either sold or seized. Very sad , indeed . Agriculture / South West Holds Future Of Food Security In Nigeria – Ambode by alfanio(m): 2:57pm On Jul 20, 2017
South west holds future of food security in Nigeria – Ambode ON July 20, 2017 Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday described the south west region as the next frontier of food security in Nigeria, revealing that an Agric Master Plan that would facilitate the effective use of the massive arable and fertile land in the region would soon be developed.
Speaking in Ibadan during a courtesy visit to his Oyo State counterpart, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Governor Ambode said it was gratifying that all the Governors in the region were in sync about economic integration, and that concerted efforts would be made to fully scale up the agric potentials of the region in the overall benefit of the people. “We have in the pipeline an Agric Summit that we are planning in conjunction with all the south west States and the idea is for us to create a master plan that allows other States in the region to partner with us. “Yes, we have done something with Kebbi State but it is never enough. Lagos State is the major consumer of agric products and the idea is that there are so much of fertile land in the South west and we must quickly start to integrate all the south west States from Ogun to Oyo, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo so that they will be able to provide to us those things that we consume in Lagos. It is a win-win partnership and it is also in the overall interest of the economic integration that we are talking about in the South West,” Governor Ambode said. While emphasizing that the south west holds the future of food security in Nigeria, Governor Ambode said the available massive arable and fertile land had placed the region on a sound footing to use agriculture not only to grow the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the region but also to ensure food availability for the country. “I want to extend my hand of fellowship because I believe strongly that the future of food security in Nigeria actually lies in the south west and we believe strongly that no matter how much of investment we are doing in terms of agriculture, in terms of commerce, Oyo State holds that key also for us to actually integrate backwards and have a bigger GDP for the south west States as we envisioned. “I am happy that in the next few days, we will be holding another South West Governors’ Meeting in Abeokuta and we will also like to use that as an opportunity for us to continue to speak to the future of the Yoruba nation so that we ensure that the future of the region is guaranteed,” Governor Ambode said. Besides, Governor Ambode commended Ajimobi for his infrastructural renewal efforts in Oyo State, especially the capital projects and public private partnership initiatives that have been undertaken in recent time, saying that the steps aimed at modernizing Ibadan were in the right direction. Responding, Senator Ajimobi said Lagos, as the economic capital and most viable State in Nigeria, has a pivotal role to play in the economic development and sustainability of the south west, and that he was happy that the State is being governed by Governor Ambode, who he said has the temperament to play such role. He said Lagos is in a position to help the South West in terms of economic integration and development and by extension the rest of Nigeria, just as Oyo State is also the political capital of the region. He recalled how former Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu laid the foundation for a greater Lagos and Babatunde Raji Fashola built on it, while Governor Ambode is presently giving Lagos a balloon push to intellectual and modern age. “Governor Ambode is undoubtedly Mr. Consolidation, undoubtedly Mr. Transformation, undoubtedly Mr. Repositioning. Beyond any doubt, he has repositioned Lagos State into what I call the IT level, the sophisticated level and each time I visited Lagos, the Governor is also Mr. Beautification. Virtually everywhere he is expanding the roads and making them better; he is building overhead bridges and beautifying the State, and all sorts and I envy you,” Governor Ajimobi said.

FG targets $8 billion forex earning annually from yam export
JUNE 22, 2017
The Federal Government says it is targeting about eight billion dollars as annual foreign exchange from the exportation of yams to other countries if its yam export programme succeeds. Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this when he received the Technical Committee on Nigeria Yam Export Programme in Abuja on Thursday. Ogbeh said the programme to be flagged off on June 29, would enable the country earn foreign exchange from agricultural produce in order to substitute the oil and gas sector. According to him, Ghana is exporting yams but we are not, yet we account for 61 per cent of the world yam production. “This programme has to succeed; we must sell whatever we produce to the world because we are buying too much. We allowed ourselves to be deceived. “I saw the figures of Ghana’s earning from yam export and their targets for the future and it was quite impressive. “If Ghana can aim at a few billion dollars a year from yams, there is no reason why Nigeria cannot quadruple that. “I want this committee to begin to engage team of engineers anywhere in the world. Can we design a plough that can make the yam heap? `We have to mechanise heap making otherwise, in the next five years, because of our aging farmers, you will find out that we do not have yams again and we will get into fresh troubles,’’ he said. Prof. Simon Irtwange, the Chairman of the committee, said that the committee was working with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to train farmers and also improve some yam varieties. The chairman said the committee had prepared a four-year action plan for the yam value chain programme in the country. He solicited for better funding for the committee which was private sector led to commence the programme. “We have standards that we are following and they have to do with pytho-sanitary requirements to meet international standards. “We have combined the standards of Ghana and Nigeria to make sure our yams are not rejected at the international markets,’’ he said. Mrs Elizabeth Nwankwo, a yam exporter, representing Oklan Best Limited, listed some challenges experienced by exporters to include inadequate transportation and lack of quality seedlings. She explained that inadequate storage facilities also contributed to the rejection of the country’s agricultural produce at the international markets. Nwankwo expressed optimism that there would be zero rejection of the country’s agricultural produce, if the challenges were tackled. recalls that the committee was inaugurated in February to facilitate the acquisition of warehouses at the receiving destinations, address markets in Europe and Canada. It will also sensitise farmers and exporters on required international standards of yam before exportation. The committee is made up of representatives from the Nigerian Customs Service, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), among others. The Nigeria yam export programme is aimed at taking yam processing to the next level.

NDE Commissions First Made-in-Nigeria Toothpick And Pencil
By Micheal Oche
— Dec 13, 2016 7:31 am | Leave a comment
It was a historic day last Thursday in Akure, the Ondo state capital as the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) commissioned the first toothpick and pencil making factory in Nigeria.
Nigeria with a population of over 170 million persons and being the largest economy in Africa, sadly import every pencil used in the country. This development remains a sad tale in the country’s quest toward job creation and economic development
Quoting a Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) report, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said last September that the country spends over $18million (about N5.6 billion) annually on importation of tooth picks.
Also, because there is no factory that produces pencils used by school children and other professionals in West African sub-region, Nigeria, therefore, spends colossal sums of money every year to import this product from other nations. It is estimated that over N750 billion is spent on importing pencils into the country annually.
For a country battling economic recession, spending such hard earned resources on non-essential items is indeed counterproductive.
In June 2015, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) listed toothpick and 40 other products that will no longer access Foreign Exchange from CBN, banks and bureaux de change for such importation.
The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said the measure would prevent further depletion of the country’s foreign reserve, lamenting that the country was spending huge amount to import things that could be produced locally.
But in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration quest to diversify the economy and encourage local manufacturing, young Nigerians are beginning to see the need to think outside the box.
Speaking during the commissioning, NDE Director General, Mr Kunle Obayan said that the Nigerian economy is facing challenges is no longer news. He said What should make news now are efforts being made to fix the economy
He said, “We may recall that all the tooth pick and pencils used in this country are imported. You may now appreciate why I referred to this project as a novel one. This is probably, the first indigenous toothpick making factory in Nigeria
“It is on record that millions of dollars are spent annually in the importation of toothpicks and pencils. The Central Bank of Nigeria no longer provides foreign exchange for the importation of toothpicks therefore; the viability of this project is not in doubt.”
According to Obayan, it is however time for Nigerians to change the lifestyle of love for foreign goods and adapt to the dictates of our current socio-economic realities.
He said, “We no longer need to import toothpicks from China or any other country for that matter. Let us begin to patronize our own from today henceforth”
He said the expectation of the NDE is that the factory will be able to provide 30 immediate direct jobs and another 150 indirect jobs within the first months of operation.
He said the Directorate will also lay the foundation for the gradual substitution of the importation of toothpicks while aiming at export of same.
On the pencil production, he said all the equipment needed for the production of pencils have been purchased and installed but the authorisation for the use of formaldehyde Resin Powder, an essential commodity in the production process is being awaited.
He said, “I wish to use this opportunity to request the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to expeditiously approve the application for waiver of End user’s Certificate (ECU) for Urea formaldehyde Resin Powder, an essential input in the production of pencils using waste paper.”
He said when the second component of this initiative takes off, the NDE is confident that over 2,000 jobs would have been injected into the economy.
He said, “We don’t have anybody that does that in Nigeria. We import all our pencils. And we have a beneficiary who has set up a plant to produce pencil. The beauty of this pencil is that it is actually made out of waste paper. It is not from wood. So, it is from waste to wealth.”
In his speech, the Chief operating officer of the toothpick factory, Samuel Babatunde thanked the NDE for the support in the actualization of the project.
He said, “we sincerely appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari whose insistence that we must use made in Nigeria products. Though, to the average Nigerian, this is causing a lot of hardship but there is nothing good that comes easy.
With this development, it is hoped that the process for Nigeria’s economic recovery has begun.
