Odemwingie announces retirement from football Chidozie Okoroji 0 April 3, 2019 9:02 pm Former Super Eagles striker Peter Odemwingie has announced his retirement from football at the UEFA’s Equal Game conference at Wembley on Wednesday. On his retirement, Odemwingie said: “It’s an emotional day, so many memories go through your head. “I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it. “Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.” Odemwingie, whose last professional appearances came for Indonesian side Madura United in 2017, said he intends to embark on a coaching career. Odemwingie was capped for Nigeria more than 60 times, scoring at the 2014 World Cup, and scored 36 goals in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016. |

y is it that nobody'(NFF) is talking about this boy or are they willing to let it go like AKANI Interested In Signing FC Basel's Nigerian Winger Published: March 12, 2019 Premier League champions Manchester City are exploring ways to sign FC Basel's Nigerian super kid Noah Okafor, according to reports. Goal Nigeria has reported that the Basel number eleven is attracting interest from Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan among others ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window. It is believed that the Swiss powerhouse offered Okafor a new deal twelve days ago to fend off interest from these big teams abroad as he had penned a professional contract in January 2018. The 18-year-old has broken into FC Basel's starting line-up in recent weeks, starting their last four matches and having a hand in two goals. Born and raised in Switzerland, he has family ties to Nigeria and is on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation with a view to a possible invitation to the Dream Team VII and Super Eagles. His recent contract extension keeps him at FC Basel until the end of the 2022-2023 season. Ifeanyi Emmanuel Photo Credit |

ONYEKURU LINK WITH PSG Everton in major fight to keep £20m star who has never played for club Date published: Monday 11th March 2019 10:17 Everton are ready to hand Henry Onyekuru his Premier League debut next season, but the Nigerian will need to be convinced to make the move. The 21-year-old was signed by the Toffees 18-months ago from Belgian side Eupen – but he has never played for the club due to work-permit issues But now Onyekuru would likely land a permit, as he is a regular for Nigeria and is one of the top-scorers in Turkey. Galatasaray would like to keep the player – but there is a major interest from elsewhere, including Paris Saint Germain. The French giants have been long-term admirers and they are ready to offer Everton a £20million deal, but they are not the only interested party as we understand fellow French sides Monaco and Marseille are also keen, along with Borussia Dortmund, Napoli and Sevilla. Everton will be left with the decision to make, as their scouts have been issuing glowing reports on his progress back to Marco Silva and his staff. Get the latest personalised |
I think Rohr mean business Rohr Reveals Exactly Why Iheanacho Was Left Out Of Nigeria's Latest Roster Published: March 10, 2019 Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho was overlooked by manager Gernot Rohr when the German announced a 23-man roster for the upcoming international matches against Seychelles and Egypt. The former Bayern Munich defender is sending a message to the Super Eagles stars with limited playing opportunities ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, with Iheanacho among the casualties. Since the start of 2019, the Foxes number eight has accumulated a paltry 56 minutes in the Premier League from a possible 900 minutes, meaning he would have been lacking match fitness coming into the two games. ''Kelechi needs to play with his club. He also needs to take advantage of the international break to show his qualities to his new coach,'' Rohr explained to CAF's official website. ''I give him time but there is danger for the AFCON for those who do not play regularly in their club. The final list for the AFCON is far from being made for anyone.'' The uncapped Paul Onuachu, who plies his trade with FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga, has been called up as well as young strikers Victor Osimhen and Henry Onyekuru. |

Former Nigerian striker Emmanuel Akwuegbu has expressed his desire to see his son play football for Nigeria instead of Austria. He also appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation to invite his 15-year old son to feature in the age grade team while speaking with reporters. “I would love my child to represent Nigeria because that’s his fatherland, he is very skilful and scores great goals. He is just 15 and plays for the youth team of FC Wacker. “He is a striker who can also play in the midfield, he’s got all it takes to play for Nigeria and I know he can start from the youth team to the highest level, if he keeps working hard. He can play up to the Super Eagles. “My son Chimezie Sean Akwuegbu is just 15 and I have made him realised the fact that it is better for him to play for Nigeria and he loves the idea and I made to also know the joy it brings to wear the colour of Nigeria as a player and at his age he is looking forward to that. “I am happy with the current NFF board which has opened doors for Nigerians in diaspora to come and play for Nigeria. I will be glad to see him play for my native country, Nigeria. “My only regret was the injury that denied me the opportunity to play for Nigeria during the Olympic qualifiers in 1999, for Sydney Olympics and this one reason I want him to play for Nigeria. “I remember my elder brother Benedict made us proud playing for Nigeria and I know Sean will do better in this generation because of the facilities he was exposed to from a tender age and I don’t want Nigeria to lose him the way they lost Alaba to Austria. Chimezie Akweugbu, has played seven times for Austria U-15 team scoring four goals as a striker. He has also played games against Bayern Munchen, Dortmund, many English team, Spanish and Italian top teams in Europa youth tournaments. https://thesportsbay.com/26388-i-dont-want-my-son-to-play-for-austria- |

Impact acquires Nigerian striker Orji Okonkwo on loan from Bologna The Montreal Impact have acquired Nigerian forward Orji Okwonkwo on loan from Italian club Bologna FC for the 2019 season, the MLS side announced Tuesday. Okwonkwo, 21, scored three goals in 27 Serie A appearances (four starts) with Bologna since joining the team in 2016. "I'm satisfied in welcoming another striker to the team," Impact head coach Remi Garde said in a statement. "Orji Okwonkwo is a young player scouted by Bologna three years ago who will help reinforce the team offensively. He's a strong and quick forward who has an interesting margin of progression. I would like to welcome him to the team." In 2015, Okwonkwo played for the Nigerian team that won the U17 World Cup. He appeared in five matches and scored one goal. The Impact open the 2019 MLS regular season on March 2 on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes. |
