Former Gombe FA chairman, Shuaib Gara-Gombe, has sensationally disclosed that Aisha Buhari, wife of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), wanted former Super Eagles forward, Daniel Amokachi, appointed as sports minister. Buhari on August 20 appointed the former Everton star as his Special Assistant on Sports, months after he was named the country’s football ambassador by the President. Gara-Gombe, while speaking on a sports breakfast show on Kennis 104.1 FM on Monday stated, “Aisha Buhari has always been fighting for those who participated in the husband’s campaign to be compensated and for a very long time, she has been fighting for him (Amokachi). “Actually, she wanted Amokachi to be the minister of sports. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get that position, so when the pressure was much on the Presidency, he (Buhari) tried to appoint him as a football ambassador. When he was appointed as such, he was asked to report to Sunday Dare. He’s been going to the ministry, doing nothing and between the period that he has been there as football ambassador, he has done nothing. “Amokachi deserves to be compensated. Buhari does not know Amokachi, Buhari knows his wife, who Amokachi worked with throughout the campaign. “We have always called for sportspeople to be appointed to occupy sports positions for our sports to be good but unfortunately, the few that had that opportunity either misused it or they are not too competent to be where they were placed.”

The lack of ethnic minority representation in positions of power across sports has come to light through the Black Lives Matter movement in recent months. Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling called on English football to address the problem in June. “We have to have a seat at the table to really effect change,” Anichebe said. “We can’t try and affect change from the outside and looking in. I have seen a couple of players say they want to become CEOs or sporting directors and I think that is what we need to do. “We need to aspire to these positions. But also, when we aspire to these positions [we then need] to get an opportunity to be in these positions. All of us together have a big role to play.” The 32-year-old’s former team-mate Tim Howard became a part-owner of English fifth-tier club Dagenham & Redbridge and United Soccer League side Memphis 901. Speaking of his hopes for such an opportunity to present itself, Anichebe said: “I would like to go down that route of owning a team. “I do have a group of people that are quite wealthy guys and together we could come together and go down that route.” He added: “I don’t see why we can’t all come together [as players] and buy clubs. Bonfrere: Westerhof Sold Nigeria’s Game Against Italy At USA World Cup

Former Super Eagles technical adviser Bonfrere Jo has blamed the team’s exit at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States of America on the erstwhile handler of the side Clemens Westerhof.

The Super Eagles agonisingly lost 2-1 to Itlay in their second round match in the competition.

The three-time African champions were a minute away from recording a famous victory against the Italians before Roberto Baggio netted the equalising goal.

Baggio then struck from the spot in extra time to hand victory to Arigo Sacchi’s men.

Bonfrere, who was Westerhof’s number two at that time has come out to say that the latter sold the game to Italy.

“Yes Everyone blames the coach. The coach did something wrong and we lost before the game started,” Bonfrere revealed in an interview with Brila FM.

“He sold the game for $100,000, that’s why we lost against Italy. If you don’t believe, you can ask the players.”
