THINKING BEYOND PAPER CERTIFICATION SALAKO, Taiwo Hassan (H.O.T.) desmondtee55@yahoo.com/08145495283 “In the digital economy of the 21st century, what you study does not actually matter; the world is interested in the excellence in you, what you have to offer.” Adedimeji(2015). Sadly, the reverse is the case in the contemporary Nigerian educational system where premium is solely placed on paper certification. Consequently, the mad rush by every Tom, Dick or Harry to get good certificates by any means, fair or foul, is justifiable in such an educational context as ours. It is believed that if you are to be employed, what you have on your certificate is always a yardstick to knowing how brilliant and intelligent you are. Students nowadays are almost always interested only in studying, or rather reading, a course for exam sake, and not in absorbing the pearls of wisdom and knowledge in the course. The result of the attitude is that students are not fully equipped with what it takes to stand out after graduation. I strongly believe that everybody is born with the same number of brain cells; hence, regardless of race, tribe, gender or family background, no one has the right to be better than you until you give him or her the right to be. You possess what can make you stand out amongst many heads; it is left to you to make it manifest in you. The global world of the 21st century has gone beyond depending on what you actually have on your paper. Many people in this world have made it in life without actually making their lives dependent on what people think they are but they made it out of the zeal, the enthusiasm, the risk and the alacrity they have in setting the pace. Some people of this category include Aliko Dangote, Bill Gate, Mike Adenuga, Femi Otedola, Folohunsho Alakija, amongst others. It is in this time of ours we see some people who do not actually use what they studied in the university as a means of getting their “daily bread”. Many students would be surprised when in the future someone they had thought would practise law became a veteran theatre artiste. This prognosis is already a reality, even in Nigeria as we already have examples in the likes of Femi Adebayo and Funke Akindele. At this juncture, it should be said loudly and clearly that the bus of life does not wait for people at the bus station to carry but rather it carries those who are already at the park waiting for it. This analogy validates that life, just like heaven, helps those who are ready to be helped and are ready to help themselves. My friend, let your mind go beyond what you are going to have on your certificate; make yourself marketable for there is competition in life after school. There are many out there already waiting who have what you think is the best. What will make what you have sellable is the foregrounding feature in you; how different you can make your contribution look amongst many contributions. This world has gone beyond looking for you: it is interested in looking for what makes you different amongst many of those who think they are sellable. Finally, I am saying you should do your best in achieving the best and try to add “pepper and salt” just in the right quantity enough to make you idiosyncratically stand out academically, economically, socially, politically, and in all ramifications. Thanks for your rapt attention! “There are many holders of first class and second class upper degrees; make yourself marketable for the labor market is congested.” Alabi (2015). |
I am very disappointed in the OP because of his myopically irrational behavior. Imagine a friend of mine studying English(300level) who wrote JAMB yesterday scoring 48 in the use of English. The guy in question had 58 in Economics which he blindly chose options thinking that his score in English would cater for everything in the aggregate. The guy as an admission seeker in 2008 had 68 in English with nobody's help. I repose some confidence in him that he would have nothing less than 80 in English. So, the op wrote it irrationally. |
Imagine a friend of mine studying English(300level) who wrote his yesterday scoring 48 in English. The guy told me that he blindly chose answers on Economics thinking that his score in English would boost his aggregate score. The reverse is the case he had 58 in Economics. As an admission seeker in 2008, he had 68 in English. So, people had the lowest score where they are good at. I think something must have gone amiss. |
gentleman100:. Meaning, sir? I think u left something unsaid. I am ready to be corrected. patiently waiting for you. |
Happy resumption, everybody. I greet my old friends who know me very well, and those who don't even know me at all. It has been 'three days' I last visited this tribune. I congratulate our newly admitted students. I want you to know that what is after six is greater than seven. It is said that it is better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret. If I have the opportune moment, I would like to write a 'motivational' write-up for the newly admitted students. Stay blessed. |
Temmi001:. I am fine. Stay blessed. |

haryormeekun:. To whom it may concern: The vice- chancellor, Professor Abdulganiy Ambali once said on the occasion organised by the Centre for Peace and Strategic studies(CPSS) headed by Dr. Mahfouz Adebola Adedimeji, that, "There is no doubt that we live in a world of conflicts. In fact to say that conflict is synonymous with human existence is to say the obvious as demonstrated by the conflict between the sons of Adam, which led to Cain killing Abel......." I used this quote by the VC to appeal to anybody who bears any grudge against someone on this TRIBUNE to please let the sleeping dog lie. We are bound to be offended, but dwelling on it is incongruous. This TRIBUNE should be used to create sense of belonging not anything that projects someone as being splenetic, cantakerous, belligerent or grouchy. This piece is not meant to seek attention, but rather to create tranquility and seredaticality. And don't forget that a BBC Listeners' Proverb has it that, "A wound given by a word is many times harder to cure than that which is given by the sword." So, anything said to abuse is always unforgettable. **"""**""""Temmi001, I'm waiting for d number"***"""""" Stay blessed! |
Iamshakur:. It is allocated during d holiday. Try to go there this week. Most of the occupants don't even submit the keys before going on holiday in order to be easy for them to get it back. You know they just pay into the account provided for them as regards the fees. Good luck! |
Temmi001:. No,,that's just d ordinary number which I do give online. I will give you d main one very soon thru d one u are sending. Thanks. |
Acecube:. My boss.How u dey? |
@Temmi001. It is a great pleasure tonight writing to you. How are you doing? I read your post concerning your views as far as academic is concerned. The last time I asked you to forward me your contact before I left school, you ignored it thinking that I am a suave who is full of shenanigan which could make him to considered someone of inconsequential bravado. No! I just feel enthralled reading your contributions any time I come on board as I do comment and /or call at the education section catch-as-catch-can. what always make me impressed is your grammatical prowess which is always syntactically impressive. Now, as I quoted a quote the other time by IBB that says, "Don't fight your seniors because elders are not to be insulted; don't trade insult with your juniors because they don't have the experience you possess. And don't fight your mates because there are many places for you to meet with them." It is in the light of the above quote by Babangida using the last clause that I see you as someone that if you are met with, One would gain what life requires. A Chinese saying has it that, "Discussing with an experienced person is worth more than ten years of education." So, I believe that knowing you as regards academic issue is concerned will be of great benefits. I now beg ur pardon that you should forward your contact to this number of mine---08091331486----- You are an iridescent non-language student who write like a language student. A Yoruba saying has it that, if an initiate greets his colleague , it is required that he is recognised. I use this this medium to congratulate those who wrote the just concluded post ume examinations. I wish you good luck. By the time the list is released, you shall have a good cause to thank the Almighty God. It greet my friends biogramms, and co. It's Alhassan, thanks. |
[quote author=BoiGrammz post=36113493]Good morning ladies and gentlemen (minus khassy , he's a specimen ) I want to sincerely apologise for all what transpired between temmi001 and I yesterday. I want you to take note that all the threats were empty. I was a little bit mad though, but I later got to conclude that I shouldn't have cared about what anybody has to say. And to whom I've offended, and those I'll offend in the future, please forgive me. Am not a violent person , khassy can bear witness, so I want all the violent expression of me in your minds to be reversed. Thanks for your understanding. Boigrammz. Cc Temmi001, yungmilio2, khassy, wheesin, duke59, lordseyad, kunzu and boss drhesjay. [/quoteYou shall become great brother. I thank you for that. |
Temmi001:. Pls 4ward ur number to this email as I would like to know u in person: desmondtee55@yahoo.com. I'm still around precisely Staff Quarters (PS). Thanks |
Temmi001:. Ibrahim Babangida once said, "Don't fight your seniors because elders are not to be insulted; don't trade insults with your juniors because they don't have the experience you possess. And don't fight your mates because there are many places for you to meet with them." Temi001, you are an archetype of erudition. I like u as my colleague. Pls don't feel malicious as there is no wish to bash u up. I look forward to knowing you in person. Stay blessed. |
khassy:. My friend, the syntactical prowess a language student has is not to display any form of shenanigan or bravado. We are not taught to be syntactically outspoken where is not needed. Rather, I'm taught to be an archetype of good grammar. We speak catch-as-catch-can. Lastly, to be called an archetype of good grammar is not judged by how many high-sounding words you can use. It is judged by how good you are at passing messages in such a manner that you can analyse 'why-and-how' your sentence is supposed to be structured. Being a language is not a master key to being a language user as we have some factors called 'competence' & performance'. We are bound to make mistakes as no one is infallible. Khassy my boss, I hail o. |
HoneySuckle:. I'm a student of d department. For anyone interested in studying the course, pls be pertinaciously determined. I won't say more than that. All the best. |
ayokunlei:. @ Ayokunle. So, there is still someone here who knows Alhassan. Thanks bro Ayokunle. |
misssclassy:. I swear by He who created me, the no 2 is RUBBISH. I'm a virgin but if u see me in my shirt/tie at school, ur life will never remain d same. Even with my attire, many don't believe that I have never had a girl friend in life. My dressing is always inviting to girls on campus(UNILORIN). A girl has approached me on campus appreciating the shirt on me. If not for privacy, I would have loved to post my pictures. Even I dress to attract girls but not interested in them. They feel my swag but I do that as what Yoruba call "FORIFORI" meaning make the head swell. So number2 is not for every virgin. Thanks and take note of that. Even the way I dress, attracts my female lecturers to the extent that I needed to snub one of them whenever I see her. |
