The radar system for an American THAAD missile battery in Jordan was struck and apparently destroyed in the first days of the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, a satellite image taken on Monday shows.

Buildings housing similar radar systems were also hit at two locations in the United Arab Emirates, CNN analysis shows, although it is unclear if the equipment was damaged.

The radar is a critical element for the high-end missile interceptor system, which is used to engage and destroy ballistic missiles as they fly toward their target. The US operates eight THAAD batteries, while the UAE operates two and Saudi Arabia one. This one was at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, over 500 miles from Iran.

The radar system for THAADs is the AN/TPY-2 transportable radar, manufactured by Raytheon. According to a 2025 Missile Defense Agency budget, it costs just shy of half-a-billion dollars.

The image shows a pair of 13-foot craters in the sand near the radar, suggesting that it may have taken multiple attempts to hit the system, which is split across five 40-foot trailers. All appeared to be destroyed or seriously damaged.

The radar and THAAD battery had been in Muwaffaq since at least mid-February and appear to have been struck on March 1 or 2. The base has been a hub of activity for the United States. In satellite images taken before the fighting started, more than 50 fighter jets could be seen on the tarmac, along with drones and transport aircraft. Dozens of aircraft shelters likely contained more planes, hidden from satellite view.

It may not be the only THAAD radar struck in the opening days of the war with Iran.

In a satellite image taken March 1, smoke can be seen rising from a radar site near the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, where dozens of American planes are stationed. At the site, a tent used to shelter a radar system for a nearby THAAD battery was badly charred, and debris was scattered around it.

A satellite image from January showed the antenna unit of the radar system was positioned inside, pointed northeast towards Iran. It wasn’t immediately clear if the radar was present at the time of the attack or if the system previously stationed there belonged to the United States or Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials did not respond to questions about the ownership of the system, and a US defense official declined to discuss the system citing operational security.

At least three buildings at a military installation near Ruwais, and four at an installation in Sader, both in the UAE, were damaged between February 28 and March 1. Pull-through vehicle sheds used to store radar systems for THAAD batteries at both sites were among the buildings struck.

CNN determined that this pair of sites hosted THAAD batteries and radars based on a review of satellite imagery that showed their presence at Sader and Ruwais as far back as 2016 and 2018, respectively. In the images, components of the radar systems can regularly be seen just outside the vehicle sheds.

CNN could not immediately determine whether the missile defense sites were used to host THAAD batteries owned by the US military, or the pair that had been sold to the UAE. High-resolution satellite imagery was not immediately available to determine whether the radar systems were present at the time of the strikes.

Damaging the radar does not make the THAAD system completely inoperable, experts say, as there are other assets and configurations, but it certainly degrades capability and flexibility.

N.R. Jenzen-Jones, a munitions specialist and director of the research company Armament Research Services (ARES), told CNN the radar cannot be easily replaced and called it a significant loss.

“The AN-TPY/2 radar is essentially the heart of the THAAD battery, enabling the launch of interceptor missiles and contributing to a networked air defense picture,” he said. “It also happens to be an incredibly expensive piece of kit. The loss of even a single radar of this type would be an operationally significant event. It is probable that a replacement unit would have to be redeployed from elsewhere, which will take time and effort.”

THAAD has a broad engagement zone, so it can be used to protect a wide area, Jenzen-Jones said. “However, it also needs to be layered with other (anti-ballistic missile) and air defenses, such as Patriot, to ensure good coverage against different kinds of threats and to provide some measure of protection to the battery itself,” he added.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Iranian strikes on US military bases and facilities across the Arabian Peninsula targeted and damaged communications, radar and intelligence equipment in an apparent effort to cut them off from the outside world.

In addition, satellite imagery shows damage to a US-made Qatari early-warning radar system at Umm Dahal, according to images analyzed by Sam Lair, a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

Following a second day of ballistic missile strikes on Israeli territory, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps which operates the country’s arsenal has reported the use of “new methods” to accelerate the depletion of Israeli air defences. This was achieved by making anti-missile systems’ surface-to-air missiles shoot down one another, thus also increasing the success rates of missile attacks against Israeli targets. “During this operation, thanks to the use of new methods and capabilities in intelligence and equipment, the multi-level defense command and control systems of the enemy failed and began to attack each other,” the Guard Corps announced. The credibility of these claims, and whether any anti-ballistic missiles have hit one another, or simply been wasted, remains uncertain. Missile strikes began to be launched from Iran in response to Israeli air strikes on multiple Iranian targets on June 13, including government agencies, the residences of scientists and officials, military bases, and nuclear power plants. The Guard Corps has born the brunt of responsibility for launching retaliatory strikes, and operates Iran’s entire ballistic missile arsenal, as well as the bulk of its fleet of attack drones.

The relatively small size of Israeli territory and the very high concentration of missile defence assets both on land and at sea makes it one of the most densely defended targets in the world, posing a significant challenge to the Guard Corps’ missile arsenal. Iranian missiles have nevertheless been able to penetrate Israeli air defences at a considerable rate, despite significant support being provided by U.S. Army THAAD anti-missile systems deployed in Israel, and U.S. Navy AEGIS destroyers at sea. The successful evasion of this multi-layered air defence network in very limited prior Yemeni missile attacks, however, set an unfavourable precedent and reportedly shook Israeli confidence in its defences. Israel has requested greater support from its strategic partners in the Western world to intercept Iranian missile attacks, with the U.S. Navy expected to dispatch more destroyers armed with SM-3 and SM-6 anti-ballistic missiles to the Eastern Mediterranean for this purpose. The possibility of greater American support being provided beyond intelligence, aerial refuelling, arms supplies and missile defence has been widely speculated.

The growing success rates which Iranian missile strikes have reportedly had has been interpreted by a number of analysts as an indication that Israeli air defences have begun to falter, either due to growing shortages, or as Iran has begun to utilise some of its more advanced missile classes with superior evasive capabilities. Iran not only has a medium range missile arsenal estimated to be an order of magnitude larger than the number of suitable surface-to-air missiles deployed in Israel, but its missiles cost significantly less than Israeli and American interceptors to produce, and in most cases just a fraction as much. This combined with the fact that multiple interceptors are usually required to shoot down a single missile places the Revolutionary Guard Corps in a strong position to cause massive damage to Israeli targets by sustaining missile barrages, and depleting Israel’s missile defences arsenal to exhaustion. The Israeli Air Force and its limited special forces on the ground in Iran are as a result under significant pressure to seek to either cause sufficient damage in major population centres to force Tehran to yield, or to sufficiently devastate the Iranian missile arsenal by attacking major bases and storehouses.

The THAAD is a critical part of the US military’s layered air defense systems. It is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles at ranges of 150 to 200 kilometers and with a near-perfect success rate in testing. It uses a hit-to-kill approach, meaning it relies on the kinetic energy of a direct impact rather than explosives to destroy an incoming missile.

Following the defeat of Israel's anti-missile defense system after Iran’s successful “True Promise 2 Operation” on October 1 Iran targeted many Israeli military centers successfully with hundreds of ballistic missiles, the US has decided to deploy its THAAD system to support Tel Aviv.

To this end, Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Patrick Ryder confirmed the deployment of THAAD on Sunday, clarifying that the system will be used to bolster Israel’s air defenses. An advance team of US military personnel and initial components necessary to operate the THAAD battery arrived in the occupied lands on Monday.

According to Ryder, over the coming days, additional US military personnel and THAAD battery components will continue to arrive in Israel, and the battery will be fully operational in the near future, he added.

While the US has repeatedly claimed that it is after peace and ceasefire in the region, it has always been backing Israel’s aggressions and destabilizing measures in the region.

According to many experts, deploying the THAAD system in the occupied lands where the US personnel will operate means Washington’s direct and more involvement in the tensions in the region that can drive the region to wider confrontations and instability contrary to the US claims.

Dr. Bilgehan Alagoz, a full-time faculty member at the School of Political Science at Marmara University in Istanbul also says, “ The THAAD defense system that the US plans to deploy in Israel is designed to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles. Its ability to intercept missiles at short, medium, and intermediate ranges indicates that the US will play a more active role in Israel's defense in the event of a third missile attack from Iran. This move is intended to serve as a deterrent against Iran.”

She further noted, “I believe that the US is gearing up for a new diplomatic approach that will prioritize nuclear negotiations with Iran. While these efforts may not be publicly visible during the current election season, I anticipate that both Harris and Trump's administrations will pursue diplomacy with Iran. If Trump is re-elected, this strategy may involve increased pressure on Iran, but the overarching goal remains the same.”

Alagoz added, “I view the deployment of THAAD systems in Israel as a reflection of the US's commitment to deterrence.”

Answering the question “Doesn't deployment of the THAAD system mean US direct involvement in tensions that can increase tensions in the region and destabilize the region?”, Sachi Sakanashi, director of JIME Center, Institute of Energy Economics in Japan, “ I believe so, but I strongly hope that Iran’s active diplomacy will work and succeed in achieving de-escalation, for I believe the expansion of the conflict will benefit nobody.”

Ivan Zakharov, Cheif of the West Asia (Middle East) section of Russia's Spunik also said, " The potential deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system to Israel raises several important questions regarding regional stability and US involvement in Middle Eastern tensions. While the US has stated that the deployment is part of its commitment to Israel's security, it is possible that sending THAAD systems could be perceived as a provocative move by other regional actors, potentially escalating tensions."

Zakharov added, "Critics argue that since THAAD systems have only demonstrated successful intercepts in controlled environments, their practical effectiveness in real-world scenarios remains uncertain. Consequently, this deployment might be seen as more of a symbolic gesture rather than a substantive improvement in regional defense capabilities. Furthermore, some experts speculate that the US might be using this as an opportunity to offload expensive equipment that is not deemed essential for its own national defense needs. Overall, the implications of this decision on regional dynamics will depend on the reactions and perceptions of key players in the Middle East."

Addressing a conference in Tehran on Wednesday, Brigadier General Ebrahim Jabbari said 90 percent of the missiles that Iran fired against the Israeli regime in the True Promise II operation on October 1 successfully hit their targets.

The general lamented that it was far cheaper for Iran to launch the attack than for Israel to defend itself. “The attack cost Iran less than 10% of what it cost us to defend against it,” he told Ynet. “In the future – in a year, two years, or five years – they can carry out 50 such attacks. And let’s say that if the IDF’s net budget in 2023 was 60 billion shekels, with less than double that you have no chance of reaching a situation where we can maintain the required amounts.”

The IDF claimed that 99% of the more than 300 kamikaze drones and missiles launched from Iranian territory were successfully intercepted. All of the UAVs and cruise missiles were shot down, military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, while a few ballistic missiles got through Israel’s defenses.

Those projectiles fell at the Nevatim Airbase and caused “only minor damage to infrastructure,” the spokesman said. He added that the drones launched by Iranian-backed militants in Iraq and Yemen all failed to reach Israeli territory. The only casualty was a shrapnel wound to a 10-year-old Bedouin Israeli girl who was hit while sleeping at her home in southern Israel.

Netanyahu called off retaliation strikes after speaking to Biden – NYT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled a plan to launch immediate retaliatory strikes against Iran after speaking to US President Joe Biden by phone on Saturday night, Israeli officials have told the New York Times.

According to two anonymous officials, Netanyahu’s war cabinet presented him with a list of responses to a massive drone and missile attack by Iran on Saturday evening. While some members of the cabinet reportedly pushed for an immediate military response, Netanyahu ultimately chose not to follow their advice at Biden’s request, the sources said.

The full details of Biden’s conversation with Netanyahu were not revealed by the White House. According to a report on Sunday by Axios, however, Biden told Netanyahu that Israel had essentially prevailed in this clash with Iran and advised him to “take the win.” It was also made clear during the call that any retaliatory action by Israel would not be supported by Washington, the American outlet reported.


Netanyahu’s war cabinet met on Sunday afternoon to discuss Israel’s response to the Iranian attack, while Iran’s top military commander declared that the “Zionist regime” had been adequately “punished,” and that Tehran would not pursue further military action unless Israel struck again.

Iran launched multiple waves of missiles and kamikaze drones at Israel on Saturday, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stating that at least 300 projectiles were fired. While the IDF claimed to have shot down 99% of the incoming drones and missiles, video footage showed numerous impacts on Israeli soil.

Iranian officials insisted that they had “more success than expected” with the barrage, and claimed that two Israeli bases had been destroyed. The IDF acknowledged only minor damage to one military facility.
