Crude prices extended losses to a five-week low on Wednesday as the American Petroleum Institute reported an increase of 9.3 million barrels in US inventories, more than nine times the amount analysts predicted.

North Sea benchmark Brent was down 75 cents trading at $47.39 per barrel, more than 10 percent below its peak last month. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 76 cents at $45.91, showing the same extent of decline since October.

Traders say oil prices could plunge even further on growing US stockpiles and increasing skepticism about a joint output cut from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

"Those who were hoping for some upside from any sort of production agreement appear to have their hopes dashed. It looks like there are speculative longs quitting the market," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

In September, OPEC leaders informally agreed to cut the cartel’s production, possibly by 200,000 to 700,000 barrels per day. The aim was to prop up prices by removing some unwanted barrels from the market.

This helped to build up prices in the short term, but with more OPEC members seeking exemptions from the production cuts, the deal, even if signed, may be too weak to cut the glut and overall production will still grow.

“The market is moving into the stage of show me rather than tell me or talk about it. There has been a month of comments from just about every member of OPEC and yet nothing concrete has been released to provide market participants with any degree of confidence,” said Dominick Chirichella from the New York-based Energy Management Institute.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the murder of a man, Philip Ugwu, 60, by suspected worshipers following a land dispute in Afikpo Local Government Area.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, George Okafor, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki on Monday that the incident occurred at Amebo-Ndebo village.
Mr. Okafor said that the matter was reported to the police on September 30 by the wife of the deceased, Abani Ugwu, adding that one Tochukwu Okoh, an evangelist, had been arrested in connection with the incident.
He said the deceased’s wife alleged that Mr. Okoh and three others attacked her husband with stones.


The officer also quoted the widow as saying that her husband who could not withstand the attack eventually became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.


He said that his body had been deposited in a mortuary and would undergo autopsy.
The spokesperson said the divisional police officer for the area led a team of detectives and anti-crime patrol officers to the scene and arrested the suspect.


“We are currently on the trail of other suspects and I am sure that they will soon be arrested due to the useful information at our disposal,” he said.


“We assure the public that the matter will be investigated thoroughly while the culprits will be duly prosecuted,” he said.
NAN learnt that the victim, popularly called Boxer or Coach, had argued with the worshippers in a new generation church over the erection of a fence to demarcate their lands.


“We heard Boxer’s wife screaming that her husband had been attacked by some worshippers and before we could get to the scene, he was lying unconscious.
“He was immediately rushed to the hospital but his wife identified one of the attackers still with a stone who was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.


“The victim’s wife explained that he had purchased and built on the parcel of land even before the church came to lay claim over it,” a witness who preferred anonymity said.
The witness said that the matter had previously been reported to the traditional council during which the head pastor of the church, still at large, was invited.

Riyadh’s foreign reserves dropped to $555 billion, down $6 billion in July, as low oil prices continue to eat up the country's assets abroad.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign holdings are 16 percent down on the same month in 2015 and are at their lowest level since February 2012. The holdings peaked in August 2014 at $737 billion falling with oil prices.

The assets are likely to consist of US dollars, securities like US Treasury bonds and deposits with banks abroad. The deposits reduced by $8 billion to $125 billion in July, but holdings in foreign securities grew by $2 billion to $371 billion after 10 straight months of contraction.

In an attempt to corner the global market and oust high-cost oil producers like US shale, Saudi-dominated OPEC introduced predatory prices for its oil, pushing crude from $114 a barrel in the summer of 2014 to the current $50.

Last year, the Saudi budget deficit hit an historic high of $98 billion. Riyadh expects this figure to drop to $87 billion. To cover some part of the deficit, the government has been borrowing domestically and abroad.

Despite this, the Kingdom has no plans to cap production, pumping a record 10.67 million barrels of oil per day in July.

Saudi Arabia also expects to issue its first international bonds in October to raise at least $10 billion. Citigroup, HSBC and JPMorgan Chase were hired as global coordinators for the sale, according to Bloomberg.
