Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state has lashed out at former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his recent comment on the idea of an Igbo presidency in 2019 – that has generated heated controversy.


Fayose in an interview with a media house said he does not take the former leader seriously, adding that he wants to be relevant at all times.

Three weeks after reports that Cameroon had blocked the internet in English-speaking parts of the country, residents say services have yet to be restored. So what is going on?

Cameroonians have little doubt that pulling the plug on internet services for about 20% of the population is an intentional act by the government.

The two regions affected, South-West and North-West, have seen anti-government protests in recent months.
Just a day before services disappeared, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a statement in which it warned social media users of criminal penalties if they were to "issue or spread information, including by way of electronic communications or information technology systems, without any evidence". The statement also confirmed that the authorities had sent text messages direct to mobile phone subscribers, notifying them of penalties, including long jail terms, for "spreading false news" via social media.

A number of Cameroonians have posted screenshots on Twitter showing the various warnings they were sent.

There has been no official comment about the internet since then (or any credible reports of technical faults) leading many Cameroonians to conclude that the severing of services is part of government attempts to stifle dissent.

What do the mobile phone companies say?

In criticising their government, some Cameroonians have also taken aim at the mobile phone companies who provide the services through which many access the internet.

These firms may not have been able to prevent the outage, since they all rely on fibre-optic infrastructure provided by a state-owned company, but nor have they been objecting publicly about the interruption to their services.

The biggest provider, MTN Cameroon, denied it had violated customer privacy by forwarding the ministry's warning texts and added that all its services remained accessible. That was on 15 January and since then it has not commented.

Some subscribers say they have since received messages referring to "circumstances beyond our control".
There has been no comment by Orange Cameroun, Nexttel or Vodafone Cameroon.

What has been the effect of cutting internet services?

Much of Cameroon's digital economy is located around the South-West capital, Buea - an area known as Silicon Mountain.

Some entrepreneurs and their workforces are reported to have relocated temporarily to Douala or Yaounde where the internet is available.
Less mobile, digital-dependent businesses will be suffering.

The outage is also reported to have hit the banking system, causing cashflow problems for businesses and individuals.
A week ago campaign group Internet Sans Frontieres estimated that blocking access to the internet over the previous two weeks had cost businesses up to $723,000 (£570,000).

That may not sound very much now, but the long-term cost of damaging the area's digital ecosystem could be very much higher.
And then there are the unquantifiable social costs entailed in cutting channels of communication and entertainment.
The United Nations has said internet access is now a basic human right. Cameroonians with access to Twitter have been tweeting their opposition to the outage using the hashtag #BringBackOurInternet.

Why is this an issue only in English-speaking areas?

It follows a period of rising tensions in which long-held grievances of English speakers against the government have erupted into protests and strikes.

The protesters say that Anglophones are discriminated against by Cameroon's French-speaking majority. Last November, more than 100 people were arrested and at least one person was shot dead in demonstrations over the use of French in courts and schools. In January, lawyers and teachers in Bamenda went on strike over the issue, turning the main city in Cameroon's North-West region into a ghost town.

The government responded by arresting activists and warning against protests and "malicious use of social media". English speakers in Cameroon say they are often excluded from top civil service jobs and that many government documents are published only in French, even though English is an official language.

English-speaking lawyers object to the employment of French-trained court workers who do not understand the English common law system.
Residents also object to the posting of teachers who do not speak good English to the region's schools.

Why is the country divided along language lines?

The official language or languages of African nations are usually a legacy of their colonial past.

Cameroon was colonised by Germany in the 19th Century and then split into British and French areas after World War One.

Later, areas controlled by Britain and France joined to form Cameroon after the colonial powers withdrew in the 1960s.
In 1961, a referendum was held in the previously British areas - Southern Cameroons voted in favour of joining a unitary Cameroonian state, while Northern Cameroons decided instead to become part of neighbouring, English-speaking Nigeria.

A secessionist movement, the Southern Cameroons National Council (SCNC), emerged in the 1990s and has been banned.

How widespread are internet shutdowns in Africa?

There have been many other partial or full internet shutdowns by African governments in the past 12 months, including in Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Morocco and Uganda.

This is generally seen as an attempt to stop opposition activists from using social media to mobilise protests, although governments say it is to prevent violence, or to stop people circulating false election results.
Human rights groups have said such action probably violates international law and should "never be allowed to become the new normal".

Deji Olukotun, senior global advocacy manager at Access Now, said in December: "As more people use the internet and social media, they are also increasingly enjoying the freedom and opportunity these provide to organise themselves and advocate for what they want.
"In response, it seems governments are shutting down the net more often to stop this practice."

Hijab case: Lagos loses again as Court strikes out motion (updated)

The Court of Appeal on Tuesday (today) struck out the motion seeking an injunction to stop the use of hijab in Lagos State.

‎The motion – stay of execution – for stoppage was raised by the Lagos State Government in the case that came up in Lagos.

The case, CA/L/135/15, is between Lagos State Government, Miss Asiyat AbdulKareem (through her father), Miss Moriam Oyeniyi and Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria.

A three-man panel of the court comprising Justices M. L. Garba (presiding), J. S. Ikyegh and U. Ogakwu, gave the ruling because of a pending appeal by the state at the Supreme Court.


It agreed with the state that the apex court was the proper place for the application to be heard.
counsel for the state, Mr. Hameed Oyenuga of the Directorate of Civil Litigation Department, informed the court that the injunction was applied for before the state appealed the judgment at the apex court.

He applied that the application be forwarded to the Supreme Court so that it could be heard alongside the appeal.

“We are asking that the application be forwarded or transmitted to the Supreme Court. We have forwarded our return argument to the Supreme Court, but we are yet to ascertain whether it has been entered,” Oyenuga said.

Counsel for the first, second and third respondents, Mr H. T. Fajimite did not object.

The court agreed that the Supreme Court should hear the application, but observed that for that to happen, the application had to be withdrawn or struck out at the appellate court

Justice Garuba said: “An appeal has been entered at the Supreme Court, you can’t expect us to transmit it to the Supreme Court. You have to withdraw the application. The application before us has to go. The application is hereby struck out.”

Explaining the implication of the judgement, Amir (President) of MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, said students can continue to wear hijabs to primary and secondary schools in Lagos State.

He said the Hijab can be worn unless the Supreme Court gives a contrary verdict.
Recall that the LASG appealed to the Supreme Court after being dissatisfied with judgements of the court of appeal delivered on Thursday, July 21, 2016 which gave approval to Muslim students to wear the hijab (veil for females) with their school uniforms.

Ashafa in an interview with our correspondent after the hearing on Tuesday said, “We give thanks to Allah for making us victorious again. This simply means that students can continue to put on the Hijab. We urge the Lagos State Government to respect this verdict and warn teachers against further harassment of our members for wearing Hijab to school.

“It is expected that the Supreme Court will also uphold our right.”

Speaking after the ruling, Fajimite said the ruling implied that there was no more restriction on the use of the hijab, THE NIGERIA LAWYER reports.

“Before now we were conceding to the fact that once an application has been is filed, for instance in terms of an application for injunction pending an appeal or stay of execution of a judgment, we are constrained or obliged to respect that action and refuse to exercise our right under the judgment that we have won.

“That application is now gone and from this moment, no such restriction, nothing is stopping any Muslim student from using hijab for now.”

Recall that in a unanimous decision, the Court of Appeal sets aside the judgment of a Lagos High Court which banned students in public primary and secondary schools in the state from putting on the hijab with their school uniforms.

A special panel of the court presided over by Justice A.B. Gumel held that the appeal was meritorious and should be allowed.

In his lead judgment, Justice Gumel held that the use of the hijab was an Islamic injunction and also an act of worship hence it would constitute a violation of the appellants’ rights to stop them from wearing the hijab in public schools.


Resolving all the five issues raised in favour of the appellants, the appellate court held that the lower court erred in law when it held that the ban on hijabs was a policy of the Lagos State Government (respondent).

Other justices in the five-man panel were Justice M. Fasanmi, Justice A. Jauro, Justice J.S. Ikyegh and Justice I. Jombo Ofor.

Justice Modupe Onyeabor of an Ikeja High Court had on October 17, 2014, dismissed the suit instituted against the Lagos State Government by two 12-year-old girls under the aegis of the MSSN, Lagos State Area Unit.

Dissatisfied, the appellants urged the appellate court to set aside the judgment and protect their constitutional rights.

The government had banned the use of the hijab, arguing that it was not part of the approved school uniform for pupils.

Following the ban, the students filed the suit on May 27, 2015, seeking redress and asked the court to declare the ban as a violation of their rights to freedom of thought, religion and education.

In her judgment, Onyeabor held that the prohibition of the wearing of hijabs over school uniforms within and outside the premises of public schools was not discriminatory.

According to her, the ban did not violate Sections 38 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution as claimed by the plaintiffs.
Ashafa had expressed confidence that a favourable judgement would be obtained.
He noted that “Hijab is a constitutional right and all citizens of Nigeria should not be deprived of their rights. Banning hijab is like banning freedom of worship and conscience.”‎

Multiple award winning rapper, Jude Abaga famously known as MI has just made history as the first Nigerian entertainer to publicly defend Islam, the religion of about 1.6 billions worldwide.

The rapper fondly known as Mr Chairman ignored other activities to educate and correct the erroneous conclusions many of his Christian followers have about Islam.

MI Abaga has over 900k followers on twitter. He didn’t only teach his Christian followers to live a violent-free lifestyle, he argued that it’s wrong for anyone to demonize all Muslims because of the sins of some few “criminals and crazy people.”

Drama started on Tuesday when a Twitter user shared the story of young children used by the terrorist group to carry out suicide bombings. “Religion of peace,” the tweeter said in sarcasm.

The rapper, who despite being a Christian didn’t spare the man as he called him out for stroking Islam in dark shades.

“Yes, it is (a religion of peace) and I am a Christian by the way,” he replied the tweeter, adding that “there are criminals and crazy people in every religion.”

This honest truth earned the respected rapper a lot of anger from some Nigerian Christians who expressed disappointment at his defense for Islam.

“Are you insane,” one fan asked, and another added, “You are just another proof that you are a celebrity who doesn’t necessarily mean you have sense. It is the most violent religion.”

But the Chocolate City CEO refused to be cornered. He tweeted forgiveness at his critics, insisted on not sweeping peaceful people and terrorists under one umbrella all because they align with a faith.

“That person didn’t do that because they were a Muslim.. they did it because they are terrorists #TerribleActByTheWay,” the rapper said.

“Because there are a lot of radicalized Muslims that engage in acts of terrorism.. that can not be debated.. however it isn’t every Muslim.”

He also cited KKK as an example of Christian terrorist group, asking “…the KKK has its roots in Christian teaching?…so they represent the church?”

A Muslim follower could not but agree with the rapper, adding that, “apart from KKK, NDRC and LRA are Christian terrorist bodies. They all claim to get inspiration from the Bible.”
