It is no news that Consultants and Resident doctors in Anambra State owned teaching hospital, COOUTH have been on strike for about a month now with no real efforts on the part of the Government to resolve the industrial disharmony.

The unfolding of this ugly development dated back to December 2018 when the Doctors issued a 21-day ultimatum to the State Government through the Hospital's Management. The ultimatum was substantially about the need for improved funding of the State Teaching Hospital that would enable provision of adequate facilities for enhanced health care delivery, Academics, Training and Research while establishing proper remuneration for health workers.

It is on record that doctors in the state owned teaching hospital earn the poorest not only in Nigeria but the whole West Africa, being paid about 40% of what their counterparts earn. To make matters worse, these essential workers have not seen any promotion/benefits/welfare packages for over 7 years of service. The Doctors in the State Teaching Hospital are the worst hit.

On the other hand, Patients have been suffering untold hardships in the State Hospitals due to dearth of diagnostic equipments, lack of enough and qualified manpower, non-motivation of the few remaining Staff; all amidst rising service charges, inflating hospital bills and other inconveniences.

Upon the expiry of the ultimatum, Doctors proceeded on warning Strike in January 2019 which was cut short after the State Government agreed to implement better funding and address other issues of the Hospitals and Health workers by April 2019.

Unfortunately, we are now in June 2019 and still awaiting fulfillment of the promises/agreements 2 months later. Sequel to this, Doctors have embarked on an indefinite strike which is now approaching a month. The Teaching hospital is now a ghost of itself as services are completely grounded and beds empty.

For negotiations, the Government only offered to redress the dismal situation when implementing the new minimum wage, maybe in a year's time. Funny enough, one cannot help but wonder the link between better funding of institutions as essential as Hospitals and paying of Minimum wage. Some of the health workers never got the old minimum wage, and talk more, the new one is supposedly on the way.

The State's only Teaching Hospital, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Awka has not been able to employ and retain experienced and highly qualified doctors since inception due to the poor working condition and welfare package. The brain drain has generated much flux, instability and chaos among the few overwhelmed remnant workforce thus undermining medical service delivery. Bitterly still, majority of the remaining workforce are also on their way out in frustration.

How appalling can it get that poor patients of these Hospitals have become stranded and on verge of perishing while the State Government fold its hands and watch? It is quite sad and disappointing that Anambra that prides as the light of the nation with the famous Alert Governor has not been able to resolve this minor health sectoral challenge.

We solemnly appeal to His Excellency, Governor Obiano, Akpokuedike Global, to come to the aid of the helpless patients, of the common man, of the people of Anambra and address this conflict once and for all, so that health workers would go back to their indispensable services.

This is a pathetic situation. It is true that Anambra state doctors are the least paid in the whole country. This is a smear on the reputation and achievements of the present goverment. The government need to address this shameful situation urgently.

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Awka ,embarked on a 7day warning strike over poor conditions of service. The association is threatening an indefinite strike at the end of 7 days if government failed to meet their demands.

COOUTH Awka is the only state owned teaching hospital in Anambra State.

connected his nerves to allow him to smile. Dr.
Rodriguez, who led the transplant, says: “It’s a surreal
experience to look at him.
“Before people used to stare at Richard because he wore
a mask and they wanted to see the deformity. Now they
have another reason to stare at him and it’s really

After years of going out of his way to avoid people,
Richard is now surprisingly comfortable socialising,
especially with staff from the hospital.
But while his tranformation has been described as
amazing, it will take time for him to recover fully.
Medical staff are currently teaching him who has not
eaten or spoken properly for 15 years, how to use his
fully functional face. He will also have more minor
surgery for the soft tissue of his face – such as his

water birth is an acceptable option for child birth for women who choose it esp in western countries. There's nothing wierd about it. Its just that it appears risky for lay people because u have to deliver the baby into water. However there's no such risk to the baby becos if u remember, while in the womb, the baby has been living inside water(amniotic fluid) so water is an environment the baby is used to.

dear NLers,and auto experts in the house please advice me. After i bought my car, a tokunbo toyota premio corona it was soon discovered that the front shock absorbers(SA) are not good. they were changed with a second hand one as i was advised that the 2nd hand is better than the brand new ones that are available in naija.Barely a year after, the shock absorbers are bad again. A mechanic said he could repair it instead of buying another one, but someone had told me it is risky working on the shock absorbers . These are my questions:1)is it true that 2nd hand SA are better than brand new ones 2)are brand new SA available in Nigeria 3)if question 1 true, how can one get a good 2nd hand SA that will last long 4)is it wise and safe repairing a bad SA instead of changing it 5)is there any danger in using bad SA.i will be grateful if i can get helpful answers . thanks

To have one's spouse as his/her best friend is ideal in every marriage and if there is anything short of this, one can never get the best out of marriage. However this intimacy is not automatic. Ones position in school is not a true yardstick for measuring his worth in life. If you are in a dull school , u will always take first position. On the other hand you may do very well and not have a good position when you have smart people in your class.in my secodary school,the grading system is the number of sujects u passed over the number you entered for. Eg 9/9, 7/9 etc.                                        It make more sense because u tend to focus on improving urself to b the best you can b rather than competing with some one else. At the end the day,what matters most in life is wether you became all that God wants u to b not how many people you beat in life.
