A viral video has shown residents in Benue State flocking to a riverside where a stash of cash was found.

In the video, the residents said billions of old notes kept in sacks have been defaced beyond repairs.

The move by the Central Bank of Nigeria to redesign some naira notes have piled pressure on currency hoarders.

Again Nigerians were alarmed when heaps of sacks containing spoilt naira notes were dumped in a warehouse at a riverside in Benue State.

The video has been viewed over 51,000 times.

This comes as CBN prepares to introduce new naira notes into circulation on December 15, 2022.

CBN policy piles pressure on currency hoarders
The CBN stated that the old naira notes would cease to be legal tender by January 31, 2023.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has on October 26, 2022, stated that it is embarking on redesigning the naira notes because about 80 per cent of the money in circulation is outside the banking system.

The bank stated that it is redesigning N200. N500 and N1000 notes.

According to the CBN, it has received over N1 trillion of old notes and deposited the same amount with the banks.

The CBN, which reduced withdrawal limits to N100,000 weekly for individuals and N500,000 for corporate bodies, have been under pressure from politicians to rethink the policy as it would affect Nigerians.

The bank said it remains unwavering in its resolve to continue with the cashless policy to strengthen the naira and economy.

The move by the CBN has led to currency hoarders releasing old naira notes in their possession.

Recently, a truck allegedly loaded with defaced N1,000 notes was seen heading from the north.

Nigerians were alarmed that a huge stash of cash have been hidden by Nigerians while many are impoverished.

The latest discovery of spoilt naira notes has revealed how much under pressure hoarders have been as Nigeria’s apex bank tightens its fiscal and monetary policy.

The World bank recently assessed Nigeria’s capacity to build the kind of infrastructures the country is currently seeking funding for.

The assessment shows that Nigeria’s current level of infrastructure is low, and it would take quite a lot to get it to where it needs to be. It also noted that there is a huge discrepancy with the country’s level of borrowing and its infrastructures.

The Nigerian government has in the past justified its borrowing expenditure by asserting that the funds would be used to build state of the art infrastructures.

Last month, the president of the country, Muhammadu Buhari , explained his rationale behind the Nigerian government's borrowing, stating that it is imperative that infrastructures are built to create more opportunities to grow the Nigerian economy, and for this to happen the government needs external aid.

“We have also continued to accelerate our infrastructure development through serviceable and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow and increased revenue generation by expanding the tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.” The president said.


However, the World Bank has disclosed that Nigeria’s physical infrastructure gap would likely reach $3tn in the next 30 years, and at this rate, it would take the country 300 years to close the infrastructure gap, which would cost the country 4% of its yearly GDP.

The Bank’s public finance review report on Nigeria reads in part; “the level and quality of Nigeria’s infrastructure quality is low, with the country ranked 132 out of 137 countries for infrastructure in the 2018 Global Competitive Index. Nigeria’s physical infrastructure gap is estimated to reach $3tn over the next 30 years.”

The report also discloses that Nigeria’s development outcomes were among the lowest globally.

Nigeria’s debt burden currently stands at about N66.61tn, including N23.77tn from the CBN and N42.84tn from domestic and foreign creditors.

Mass strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure have clearly demonstrated that the Russian army can destroy this country in a short time, thinks Paul Craig Roberts, former White House official during the Reagan administration.

“Russia can destroy Ukraine in a day without the use of weapons,” says a US official.

According to Roberts, Moscow is still holding people on suspicion in a neighboring country due to the seizure of a community.

Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal are the early favourites to land former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Sky Sports, Al Hilal are preparing to make the first mega offer to Ronaldo barely days after the 37-year-old became a free agent.

Ronaldo and Manchester United parted ways after the Portuguese icon launched a scathing attack at the club, coach Erik Ten Haag, and some of the players in an explosive interview with popular journalist Piers Morgan.

While Ronaldo remains keen to remain in Europe and team up with a side that can offer him Champions League football, a move to the Middle East is not completely out of the picture.

Argentine fans have mocked Kylian Mbappe and other French players in a viral video.

The Argentines, singing what appears to be a racist song against the players of the French national team, said almost all the players in Didier Deschamps’ squad are Africans.

In 1997, 14 year old Nathan Zohner presented his science fair project to his classmates, seeking to ban a highly dangerous chemical from its everyday use.

The chemical in question? Dihydrogen monoxide.


Throughout his presentation, Zohner provided his audience scientifically correct evidence as to why this chemical should be banned.

He explained that dihydrogen monoxide:

Can cause severe burns while it’s in gas form


Corrodes and rusts metal

Kills countless people annually

Is commonly found in tumors, acid rain, etc.

Causes excessive urination and bloating if consumed Zohner also noted that the chemical is able to kill you if you depend on it and then experience an extended withdrawal.

He then asked his classmates if they actually wanted to ban dihydrogen monoxide.

And so 43 out of the 50 children present voted to ban this obviously unsafe chemical.

However…this chemical isn’t typically considered toxic at all.

In fact, dihydrogen monoxide is simply an unconventional name for water.

Nathan Zohner’s experiment wasn’t a legitimate attempt to ban water, but instead an experiment to get a representation of how gullible people can really be.

Also, all of the points that Zohner used to convey his point were 100% factually correct; he just skewed all of the information in his favor by omitting certain facts.

One journalist eventually dubbed this event as ‘Zohnerism’, where true facts are used to mislead people towards false conclusions.


And this occurs a lot more often than you think, especially when politicians, journalists, etc., use proven facts to persuade people into believing false claims.

The fact that people can mislead, and be misled so easily, is highly unsettling.

U.S. privately asks Ukraine to show Russia it's open to talks -Washington Post

WASHINGTON, Nov 5 (Reuters) - The Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraine’s leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, the Washington Post reported on Saturday.


The paper quoted unnamed people familiar with the discussions as saying that the request by American officials was not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, but a calculated attempt to ensure Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.


It said the discussions illustrated the complexity of the Biden administration’s position on Ukraine, as U.S. officials publicly vow to support Kyiv with massive sums of aid "for as long as it takes" while hoping for a resolution to the eight-month conflict that has taken a big toll on the world economy and triggered fears of nuclear war.


The paper said U.S. officials shared the assessment of their Ukrainian counterparts that Putin is not for now serious about negotiations, but acknowledged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's ban on talks with him had generated concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the war's effects on costs of food and fuel are felt most sharply.


"Ukraine fatigue is a real thing for some of our partners," the Post quoted one unnamed U.S. official as saying.


The White House National Security Council had no immediate comment when asked if the report was accurate, while a spokesperson for the State Department responded by saying:


"We've said it before and will say it again: Actions speak louder than words. If Russia is ready for negotiation, it should stop its bombs and missiles and withdraw its forces from Ukraine.


"The Kremlin continues to escalate this war. The Kremlin has demonstrated its unwillingness to seriously engage in negotiations since even before it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine."


The spokesperson also noted remarks by Zelenskiy on Friday, in which he said: "We are ready for peace, for a fair and just peace, the formula of which we have voiced many times."


In his nightly address to the Ukrainian people on Friday, Zelenskiy added: "The world knows our position. This is respect for the UN Charter, respect for our territorial integrity, respect for our people."


U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said during a visit to Kyiv on Friday that Washington's support for Ukraine would remain "unwavering and unflinching" following next Tuesday's midterm congressional elections.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reportedly said during an interview at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Tuesday that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Al Saud has expressed the kingdom’s desire to be part of the BRICS. Ramaphosa recently returned from an official visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital city. The BRICS nations are Russia, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

The president of South Africa was quoted as saying:

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed the kingdom’s desire to join the BRICS. In 2023, the BRICS summit will be held under the South African presidency and this request will be studied.

“Several countries are in contact with the BRICS and we have assured them that the accession issue will be discussed and a decision will be made,” Ramaphosa explained.

“If Saudi Arabia joins BRICS, it would be a promotion to the Middle East countries to strengthen their ties with BRICS countries and weaken the intervention and influence of the U.S. in the area,” a Beijing-based international relations expert reportedly told Global Times Wednesday. Many others share the sentiment. “If Saudi Arabia joins BRICS, it will be another strategic blow to the American Empire. BRICS+ can launch a democratic and commodity-backed global currency to challenge the U.S. dollar,” a Twitter user wrote.


During the BRICS Summit in July, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the BRICS economies plan to issue a “new global reserve currency.” Analysts believe the BRICS move to create a reserve currency is an attempt to undermine the U.S. dollar and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).

Kiyosaki has been predicting the end of the U.S. dollar for quite some time. Earlier this month, he said that the U.S. dollar will crash by January next year. Last month, he said the end of the fake money is here. The renowned author previously explained that when President Richard Nixon removed the U.S. dollar from the gold standard in 1971, “the U.S. dollar became fake money.”

World leaders and international organisations condemn Russia’s nationwide assault on Ukraine.

Several people were killed in a wave of deadly Russian air attacks on the capital, Kyiv, on Monday, with other cities also attacked.

Ukrainian officials called on citizens nationwide to seek shelter amid the ongoing bombardment.

Other cities that were hit include Lviv, in the west, and Dnipro.

The attacks were the Kremlin’s response to an explosion over the weekend that damaged a strategically important bridge for Russian forces, connecting the annexed Crimean Peninsula to mainland Russia.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the bridge attack, but some officials did celebrate the incident.


The death toll was not immediately clear. At least 11 people were killed in Kyiv, according to Ukraine’s emergency services.

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on his Telegram account that Russia was “trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth”.

“Please do not leave [bomb] shelters,” he wrote. “Let’s hold on and be strong.”


Zelenskyy said Russia was trying to destroy Ukraine and that common people on their way to work during the Monday morning rush had been killed.

“They have two targets. Energy facilities throughout the country … the second target is people,” he added.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Putin’s “only tactic is terror on peaceful Ukrainian cities”.


“He will not break Ukraine down. This is also his response to all appeasers who want to talk with him about peace: Putin is a terrorist who talks with missiles,” Kuleba tweeted.


European Union

The president of the European Parliament said the strikes in Kyiv were “sickening”.


“It shows the world, again, the regime we are faced with: One that targets indiscriminately. One that rains terror and death down on children,” Roberta Metsola tweeted.


Meanwhile, a spokesman for the bloc’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the EU believes Russia’s missile attack on civilians in Ukraine “amounts to a war crime”.
“Indiscriminately targeting people in a cowardly, heinous hail of missiles on civilian targets is indeed a further escalation,” spokesman Peter Stano said.

“The European Union condemns in the strongest possible terms these heinous attacks on the civilians and civilian infrastructure … This is something which is against international humanitarian law and this indiscriminate targeting of civilians amounts to a war crime,” he said.

United Nations

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is “deeply shocked” by Russia’s air raids, a spokesman said.

“This constitutes another unacceptable escalation of the war and, as always, civilians are paying the highest price,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, said the attacks were “shocking”.

“People on their way to work, parents taking their children to school. There is no excuse for this violence. Stop!” she added.

United States

US President Joe Biden strongly condemned Russia’s missile strikes, saying they “demonstrate the utter brutality” of Putin’s “illegal war.”

“These attacks killed and injured civilians and destroyed targets with no military purpose,” Biden said in a statement. “We will continue to impose costs on Russia for its aggression.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba “to reiterate US support for Ukraine following the Kremlin’s horrific strikes this morning”.

“We will continue to provide unwavering economic, humanitarian, and security assistance so Ukraine can defend itself and take care of its people,” Blinken tweeted.


Germany

The Group of Seven (G7) countries will hold talks on Tuesday after Russia’s missile attacks, a German government spokesperson said.

Zelenskyy will address the G7 leaders at the start of the virtual talks, said the spokesperson, adding that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had assured the Ukrainian president of support in a phone call.

India

India was “deeply concerned” by the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, a spokesman for the country’s foreign ministry said.

“We reiterate that escalation of hostilities is in no one’s interest. We urge immediate cessation of hostilities and the urgent return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue,” Arindam Bagchi said in a statement.

NATO

Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg described the attacks as “horrific”.

“Spoke with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and condemned Russia’s horrific and indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said in a tweet.

“NATO will continue supporting the brave Ukrainian people to fight back against the Kremlin’s aggression for as long as it takes.

United Kingdom

The attacks are “unacceptable”, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Monday.

“This is a demonstration of weakness by Putin, not strength,” he tweeted, adding that he had contacted his Ukrainian counterpart, Kuleba.

China

China’s Foreign Ministry called for de-escalation.

“We hope the situation will de-escalate soon,” ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “extreme concern” during a call with Zelenskyy and promised that Paris would increase military aid.

“The president spoke of his extreme concern about strikes that have caused civilian victims,” Macron’s office said in a statement.

“He reaffirmed his full and complete support for President Zelensky and the commitment of France to increase its support for Ukraine, in line with the needs expressed by Kyiv, including in terms of military equipment.”

Moldova

Moldova’s foreign minister said several Russian cruise missiles targeting Ukraine had crossed its airspace and Moscow’s envoy was summoned to give an explanation.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of the brutal strikes,” Nicu Popescu said on Twitter.

Canada

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly called the attacks “shocking and horrifying”, adding that targeting civilians was a “war crime”.

“Canada stands with the people of Ukraine,” she tweeted.


Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the raids on Monday were in retaliation for the alleged Ukrainian attack on a bridge to Crimea, which he has called an act of “terrorism”. Kyiv has not directly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Putin said the Russian military launched precision weapons from the air, sea and ground to target key energy and military command facilities.

“It was not possible to leave [Ukrainian attacks] unanswered. If they continue, the response from Russia will be severe and correspond to the level of threat,” the Russian president said at the beginning of a televised meeting of his Security Council.

Lokoja looks like a local government headquarters. From Ganaja to Felele through Ibrahim Taiwo is just a slum town. Half of the residents don't have toilets in their houses and they make use of River Niger for defecation.

The town can be very hot too with extreme humidity. I lived there in 2011 during my service year and it felt like hell. Mount Patti was the only nice thing about the town.

I'm always peeping on my neighbor's/friends' unclothedness whenever they are taking their baths.

It all started six years ago during my ND in school, & up till now, I'm still living with it.

The U.S. hosted the defence officials of several countries on Tuesday at the Ramstein U.S. air base in Germany for the Ukraine conference, amongst them were African nations.

Dour African countries were invited to the defence summit organised by the United States to push for more support for Ukraine against Russia.

It was not clear whether the African countries attended the meeting, or why they were invited.

African nations have been torn between supporting Russia and Ukraine, and many have tried to maintain neutrality at the official level. At the last United Nations general assembly vote on the expulsion of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, half of them, including Nigeria, abstained.


Although one of the first to condemn Russia’s invasion, Kenya stayed away from the vote, and so did Tunisia and Morocco. Liberia voted in favour of the suspension.


Ukraine had earlier recalled its ambassador in Morocco for failing to convince the Moroccan government to punish Russia. Morocco has chosen to remain neutral by not participating in UN votes on Russia, a move many suspect is as a result of Morocco’s actions on Western Sahara.

Tuesday’s conference secured pledges from allies to sustain military aid to Ukraine throughout the war. The meeting saw a major pledge from Germany, which said it would deliver tanks to Ukraine in a radical switch in policy on the supply of military equipment to the country.


“We do want to make it harder for Russia to threaten its neighbours and make it less able to do that,” Deutsche Welle quoted U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin as saying. Mr Austin added the conference would transform into a monthly contact group on Ukraine’s self-defence.


The German government at the conference confirmed reports it would approve a delivery of anti-aircraft tanks to Ukraine. This was announced by German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht.

Under the plan, Berlin will grant weapons company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann permission to send “Gepard” anti-aircraft cannon tanks — the German word for cheetah — to Ukraine. Ms Lambrecht also said Ukrainian soldiers were being trained to use artillery systems in Germany.

“We are working together with our American friends in training Ukrainian troops on artillery systems on German soil,” DW quoted her as saying.

Other countries are also lending their support by donating various warfare equipment: the UK said it has distributed more than 200,000 items so far, including 4,800 NLAW anti-tank missiles, and a small number of Javelin missiles. It has also provided Starstreak anti-air missiles and tanks.

France is sending its Caesar mobile howitzer, and the Czech Republic is delivering its older self-propelled howitzers. As well as also sending howitzers, Canada is to deliver guided “Excalibur” shells that can travel more than 40 kilometres (25 miles) and deliver precisely targeted munitions.

The formal diplomatic note from Moscow, a copy of which was reviewed by The Washington Post, came as President Biden approved a dramatic expansion in the scope of weapons being provided to the government in Kyiv

Russia this week sent a formal diplomatic note to the United States warning that U.S. and NATO shipments of the “most sensitive” weapons systems to Ukraine were “adding fuel” to the conflict there and could bring “unpredictable consequences.”

The diplomatic démarche, a copy of which was reviewed by The Washington Post, came as President Biden approved a dramatic expansion in the scope of weapons being provided to Ukraine, an $800 million package including 155 mm howitzers — a serious upgrade in long-range artillery to match Russian systems — coastal defense drones and armored vehicles, as well as additional portable antiaircraft and antitank weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition.

The United States has also facilitated the shipment to Ukraine of long-range air defense systems, including Slovakia’s shipment of Russian-manufactured Soviet-era S-300 launchers on which Ukrainian forces have already been trained. In exchange, the administration announced last week, the United States is deploying a Patriot missile system to Slovakia and consulting with Slovakia on a long-term replacement.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed the diplomatic note, and said that similar démarches on arms shipments to Ukraine were sent to “all countries,” including the United States, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported.

Shipment of the U.S. weapons, the first wave of which U.S. officials said would arrive in Ukraine within days, follows an urgent appeal to Biden from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as Russian forces were said to be mobilizing for a major assault on eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region and along the coastal strip connecting it with Russian-occupied Crimea in the south. Russian troops have largely withdrawn from much of the northern part of the country, including around the capital, Kyiv, following humiliating defeats by the Ukrainian military and local resistance forces.

“What the Russians are telling us privately is precisely what we’ve been telling the world publicly — that the massive amount of assistance that we’ve been providing our Ukrainian partners is proving extraordinarily effective,” said a senior administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about the sensitive diplomatic document.

The State Department declined to comment on the contents of the two-page diplomatic note or any U.S. response.

Russia experts suggested that Moscow, which has labeled weapons convoys coming into the country as legitimate military targets but has not thus far attacked them, may be preparing to do so.

“They have targeted supply depots in Ukraine itself, where some of these supplies have been stored,” said George Beebe, former director of Russia analysis at the CIA and Russia adviser to former vice president Dick Cheney. “The real question is do they go beyond attempting to target [the weapons] on Ukrainian territory, try to hit the supply convoys themselves and perhaps the NATO countries on the Ukrainian periphery” that serve as transfer points for the U.S. supplies.

If Russian forces stumble in the next phase of the war as they did in the first, “then I think the chances that Russia targets NATO supplies on NATO territory go up considerably,” Beebe said. “There has been an assumption on the part of a lot of us in the West that we could supply the Ukrainians really without limits and not bear significant risk of retaliation from Russia,” he said. “I think the Russians want to send a message here that that’s not true.”


The diplomatic note was dated Tuesday, as word first leaked of the new arms package that brought the total amount of U.S. military aid provided to Ukraine since the Feb. 24 invasion to $3.2 billion, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby. In a public announcement Wednesday, Biden said it would include “new capabilities tailored to the wider assault we expect Russia to launch in eastern Ukraine.”


The document, titled “On Russia’s concerns in the context of massive supplies of weapons and military equipment to the Kiev regime,” written in Russian with a translation provided, was forwarded to the State Department by the Russian Embassy in Washington.

The Russian Embassy did not respond to requests for comment.


Among the items Russia identified as “most sensitive” were “multiple launch rocket systems,” although the United States and its NATO allies are not believed to have supplied those weapons to Ukraine. Russia accused the allies of violating “rigorous principles” governing the transfer of weapons to conflict zones, and of being oblivious to “the threat of high-precision weapons falling into the hands of radical nationalists, extremists and bandit forces in Ukraine.”


It accused NATO of trying to pressure Ukraine to “abandon” sputtering, and so far unsuccessful, negotiations with Russia “in order to continue the bloodshed.” Washington, it said, was pressuring other countries to stop any military and technical cooperation with Russia, and those with Soviet-era weapons to transfer them to Ukraine.


“We call on the United States and its allies to stop the irresponsible militarization of Ukraine, which implies unpredictable consequences for regional and international security,” the note said.

Andrew Weiss, a former National Security Council director for Russian, Ukrainian and Eurasian affairs, and now vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a speech on the February morning that the invasion began, warned that Western nations would face “consequences greater than any you have faced in history” if they became involved in the conflict.

Attention at the time focused on Putin’s reminder that Russia possesses a powerful nuclear arsenal, Weiss said, but it was also “a very explicit warning about not sending weapons into a conflict zone.” Having drawn a red line, he asked, are the Russians “now inclined to back that up?”

Such an attack would be “a very important escalatory move, first and foremost because it represents a threat to the West if they aren’t able to keep supplies flowing into Ukraine, which by extension might diminish Ukraine’s capacity for self-defense.” That risk “shouldn’t be downplayed,” he said, noting the added risk that an attempt to strike a convoy inside Ukraine could go awry over the border into NATO territory.

Senior U.S. defense officials remain concerned about the possibility of such attacks. “We don’t take any movement of weapons and systems going into Ukraine for granted,” Kirby said Thursday. “Not on any given day.”

Kirby said Ukrainian troops bring the weapons into Ukraine after the United States brings them into the region, and “the less we say about that, the better.”

South Africa

Kenya has its fair share of arms factories. In 1997, the Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation (KOFC), a part of the Ministry of State for Defense, was founded to produce small guns.

With Belgian firm FN Herstal in 1996, Kenya was able to produce small guns and ammunition. The bullet factory has a daily production of 20,000 to 60,000 bullets, whereas local demand is around two million per year.

The factory makes three different bullets: 9mm ammunition for the FN35 Browning handgun and Sterling, Uzi, or H&K MP5 submachine guns used by the military; 7.62x51mm ammo for the FN FAL and G3, the primary rifles used by the armed forces; and 5.56mm ammunition for the Kenya police. The plant cannot produce ammo for the AK-47, the region’s most widely used assault weapon.

Despite having ratified the UN Arms Trade Treaty, Kenya refuses to open its factories for independent inspection.

April 13 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said on Wednesday that 1,026 soldiers of Ukraine's 36th Marine Brigade, including 162 officers, had surrendered in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

Mariupol, which has been encircled by Russian troops for weeks, has seen the fiercest fighting and the most comprehensive destruction since Russia invaded on Feb. 24.

Russian television on Wednesday broadcast clips of what it said was the surrender. In the footage, unarmed men in military fatigues were visible walking with their hands up along a grass- and tree-lined path towards masked soldiers cradling assault rifles.

In one clip, four marines walked away from a damaged industrial building carrying a wounded person on a stretcher. One of the four carried a makeshift white flag as well. Wounded men were loaded onto a yellow bus.

An unidentified Russian soldier said: "You may be scared or not, but it is necessary to surrender anyway. The choice is not a big one. First, the encircling is tight enough. Second, there are at least five echelons (of troops), so it is not that simple to exit if someone would think that he can easily leave."

More than a dozen solders were lined up in formation in a dark room, where an unidentified prisoner of war said in Russian: "I was in a group of 13 to 15 men who moved together and survived. We had to surrender as we had been encircled."

The main Sea of Azov port is the biggest target in the eastern Donbas region that Moscow now calls the focus of its campaign. If captured, it would be the first major city to fall since the war began. Its capture would help secure a land passage between separatist-held eastern areas and Crimea, which Russia seized and annexed in 2014.

Reuters could not independently confirm the surrender. Ukrainian defence ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Motuzyanyk said he had no information about it, and there was no immediate comment from the Ukrainian president's office or the Ukrainian general staff.

"In the town of Mariupol, near the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, as a result of successful offensives by Russian armed forces and Donetsk People's Republic militia units, 1,026 Ukrainian soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade voluntarily laid down arms and surrendered," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.

On Monday, a post on the Ukrainian marine brigade's Facebook page had said the unit was preparing for a final battle in Mariupol that would end in death or capture as its troops had run out of ammunition.

"Today will probably be the ultimate battle, as there is no ammo left," said the post. "Beyond that: hand to hand fighting. Beyond that, for some death, for others capture."

Some Ukrainian officials said at the time that the post may have been fake, and that troops were still holding out.

The Russian defence ministry said 151 wounded Ukrainian soldiers were treated on the spot and taken to Mariupol's city hospital.
