Absolutely, I agree with you the fact that the scripture said that "we are dead to sin" does not mean we should sleep and relax we have to stand guard and be ready for battle we should put on the full armour in Christ because the devil our greatest adversity is always lurking around seeking for who to devour. Another vital point is that the so called Christians of today majority are not really Christian - don't have the spirit of God. Some have it but its not manifesting because its been quenched and starved in their lives.

False Repentance involves accepting your wrong, showing remorse but continuing serving  your SELF without denying the core nature of your heart and it leads to death e.g Judas Iscariot - Matthew 27:3-5. Judas Iscariot though realized his wrong he continued following his own deceitful heart that’s why he had to hang himself.
True repentance is denying the core nature of your heart, throwing away your SELF will and leaving everything in the hands of Jesus Christ, it leads to eternal life David - Psalms 51: 5, Peter - Matthew 26:69-75. Peter realized his wrong denied himself and followed the heart of Jesus Christ and he became a successful fisher of men.
True repentance is not saying, “God, I lied. God, I stole. God, I had an abortion. God, I committed adultery. Forgive me.” This is just speaking of a particular symptom or act of a sin relative to your sinful nature which every mankind has inherited.
Understanding of sin is crucial , SIN has two dimensions, there is SIN NATURE we inherited from the fallen man Adam and there is  SYMPTOMS OF SIN NATURE - expression of the sin nature, many times we dwell on the symptoms of sin like the Pharisees when they took a woman caught in one of the symptoms of sin (adultery) to Jesus Christ, they had to dwell on the symptom yet they also had the nature of the , they thought they were clean but they had their own self-righteousness but not true righteousness (Jesus Christ),  that’s why they could not cast a stone on the woman caught in the act of adultery, the moment they stood in front of the one  who is the true righteousness they could realise how dirty they were. Friends instead we need forgiveness of the SIN NATURE we were born with and the symptoms of sin will be taken care of, we became sinners through Adam and we can only become righteous through Christ (Romans 5:19). Deal with cause and the symptom will also disappear, we need the true righteousness who is Jesus Christ, a bad tree must be cut down (Matthew 7), a bad tree is one planted in Adam therefore it must be cut down and be planted in Christ in spirit.  If you are a wild olive tree, it is not one branch that has to be cut off, but the entire tree trunk must be cut off and grafted onto a good olive tree - Jesus Christ. 

 “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7: 24-25)

Category1: HOW MAN SHOULD VIEW THIS
The soul is human body controlled by his mind. That is, every human being or everybody is a soul.
Soul=body=mind=the human.

Now, God is spirit.

The soul which is the human, have spirit(or Holy spirit in the case of a christian) which do not show physically or manifest in any form .That means the soul or human or his mind, is not the spirit in him and the spirit in him is not the soul or the person or his mind.
Let's apply this in a situation for proper understanding.
In a situation were the person have exam to write, who is doing the reading?
Is it his soul or his mind that is doing the reading or his spirit that is doing the reading?
Certainly it is his soul or his mind or body that is doing the reading not his spirit. If he fails to read the holy spirit in him cannot help him to pass no matter how hard he prays, God who is spirit will just be looking at him.
The same thing applies to a situation were the person needs financial breakthrough. He need to work.

Category 2: HOW GOD VIEWS THIS.
I think this is what the OP is trying to explain, you are right. Only that you were mixing up some elements of category 1 with that of category 2, which have confused so many christians.

To God, the Soul is the human spirit (or holy spirit if he is a christian) in him.
Soul=spirit
However, God is not interested in the human body or mind. Flesh and blood cannot please God, because God is spirit.
This implies that God is interested in saving the spirit of the soul(what God sees as the soul)from dying with the body the day the person dies.
Because in category 1 above, death was the product of the mind and the body in the first place.
It took the mind and body which is the soul known as Adam to sin.

From this message based on what I understood, I would try as much as possible to summarize your ur point. You concluded that the mankind is made of the body and soul, that the soul is the same as the spirit. In another context you said the spirit is inside the soul.
But here is what I would like to affirm its a fact even in the secular world that human being is made up of the body, the soul and the spirit. take the case of an individual possessed with a spirit, e.g of spirit of adultery, this spirit controls his mind - the soul, which he then manifest in the body through his actions. He might not be the wish of his mind to engage in adultery but he his being controlled by a force that the wind can not resist, this is where I agree with your point that the spirit is inside the soul. In human beings since our spirit which controls our soul is dead to God - imperfect, the spirit after our birth will possess any of theses worldly acts sexual immortality, jealousy, telling lies, selfishness, hatred, excess love for money and so on. there is no human being that would not have any of this weaknesses in his spirit, that his why we say no one is perfect, this acts controls our mind and manifest in our body through our actions. But this is what God has done through his Holy Spirit, He replaces our old spirit with the Holy Spirit, this Spirit Changes our mind, the way we perceive things will be different, and if finally manifest in our actions. The Spirit - Holy spirit controls our actions.

The ambiguity lies in the word soul, in that, God sees us as soul, humans also sees themselves as souls but humans cannot see themselves as spirits.
So, the words spirits and souls can only be used interchangeably where God is talking, not man.

The implication of this ambiguity is that, a lot of christians believing that they are spirits and not understanding what they are doing,will not want to work but keep seeking spiritual remedy to their breakthrough, so you keep seeing them in church.

Mankind is a spirit, he possesses a soul and he -his soul and spirit, lives in a body. You are not your body - the physical appearance, you are a spirit being. Soul and spirit has been used interchangeable

Remember Adam and Eve were deceived by the devil and ever since the human spirit has been dead to God. So what happens when someone becomes a true Christian - born again. The born again experience will only impact your spirit - the dead spirit. God sends his spirit - Holy spirit, through Christ to you and replaces it with the dead spirit. The spirit which God has given you transforms your soul - REGENERATION. This is done completely outside your own human effort - self righteousness. For the spirit to thrive and work hand in hand with your soul, it needs to be fed the word of God continually - everyday, reading and meditating on the word of God and listening to biblical messages (Roman 12:2). Is it possible for one to have this spirit and not manifest in ones life? YES. Through starvation or quenching - failure to renew our mind with the word of God. Can attending all church programs and crusades make you have the Spirit of God? NO. Can reading the Bible make you have the Spirit of God? NO. Is it possible for someone attending Church since childhood not have the Spirit of God? YES.
Is it possible to engage in church activities and not have the Spirit of God? YES.
So how can one receive the Spirit of God ? Topic for another day

What is religion? Religion is a way of life which is governed by laws and doctrine - things I have to do with my own effort to be presentable to God.
who is a Christian? a Christian is someone that has the spirit of God - Holy Spirit, dwelling in him.
Christianity is a way of life of an average Christian which is been governed by the Holy Spirit, in Christianity Christ is the head.

A relationship with God will never be found in any religion, because religions only offer swimming lessons to people drowning in the sea of sin. And it doesn’t matter how sincere or devout you are in your religious faith and practice, because the sea of sin is eternally immense. The only hope for men and women drowning in the sea of sin is Jesus Christ. God entered human history in the person of Jesus Christ; he dove into the sea of sin in order to save desperate and drowning people. If you’ll allow him to take you there, he’ll hold you in his loving arms and bring you safely to shore. And after arriving safely to shore, then your swimming lessons begin, so that you can go back and rescue others as opposed to the case of religions where swimming lessons is been given to those that are drowning in the sea of sin. We all have that responsibility to go back to the world and rescue those that are drowning and direct them to Christ.

If not you can pray for to God bring the individual to light so he can repent from his sinful ways. Its worth noting that there is no one that can come to the Light - Jesus Christ, without God, and those that are in the Light including those that would still come to the Light have been predestined by God since the foundation of the earth, so if this individual has been predestined by God, even without praying for him he would definitely come to Light, but if not no matter the amount of prayer God has no plan for such individual, this is why we that are the Light- Christ should always thank God for such an amazing grace he bestowed on us. No matter how much Adam could cover himself with fig leaves God could never accept him, God only accepts the blameless lamb His only Son Jesus Christ, with His Son’s indwelling in us through the Holy Spirit we can start to have true Spiritual life where the Holy Spirit works and the FLESH is dead!
