How can the vessels pass under the 2nd Niger Bridge when same is completed ?. The 2nd Niger Bridge does not have enough sea level height compared to the 1st bridge. Except if the sea port will be relocated southwards before the 2nd Niger Bridge. If you travel to Onitsha and pass through the bridge, you will understand what I am talking about. |
BUSINESS STARTERS: LESSON TO LEARN For the purpose of clarity, the kind of business referred to as subject is the business of buying and selling. However, the lessons herein can be applied to other businesses. I have a friend by name Cynthia (not real name) whom I met online in 2018. From my observation of her online activities, I could tell that she was a very industrious person. She was then a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. She lived in her family home while she was a student in that year. Two months after our meeting physically, she started uploading ladies’ fancy slippers and fancy bags. When I inquire from her within some days after her uploads in all her social media accounts, she will tell me that the stocks had finished and she intends to re-stock. She bought her goods from Onitsha. So I see it that she is doing well and her business is selling. Sometimes like after a month, she informed me that she has N50,000 and intends to make it N100,000, that she can use to buy her goods. She also said that she wants to send the money to her cousin in Lagos who travels to Cotonou to help her buy the goods (slippers and bags) she sells. I asked her what happens to the Onitsha that she does buy from: is it that she does not buy at good prices in Onitsha? I advised her to continue buying from Onitsha. She can inquire and buy from direct importers who sell to those inside market from their warehouses. I want to believe that my advice sounded like a discouragement to her which she discarded. She later completed the money and sent to her cousin for the business trip to Cotonou, but the story that followed afterwards was very interesting. HER STORY: She told me that her cousin way billed a bag of goods to her but when she opened it, she was shocked with what she saw as the content of the bag. The bag contained male expensive packet shirts, singlet and other t-shirts. Those are totally different from what she ordered which were ladies fancy slippers and fancy bags. More interesting was the fact that no receipt was included in the goods. When she called her cousin for explanation, he gave her cock and bull story and stopped picking her calls. Later on she informed me that she was only able to make N50,000 from the goods her cousin sent to her and she would like to use it to import goods from China. I told her to reconsider going back to Onitsha. She told me that she knows one agent who was introduced to her at a place she was doing Chinese class then. She sent the money and was later duped. She lost interest in business and since then has never marketed anything in her social media accounts. Her young aspiring ideas have died as a result of carelessness and unplanned quest for cross-border trade. WHAT TO LEARN. Every business involves some risks but the risk takers are very calculative and not careless. There are some businessmen and women in Nigeria who trade in millions but has never crossed any border of the country. They buy their goods in Nigeria and resell it here. Chidi is a businessman that is based in Aba, of Abia State while Ebuka is a businessman that is based in Takum of Taraba State. The both buy their goods from either Onitsha or Kano and have never travelled outside Nigeria for any business trip. They trade in hundreds of Millions of Naira. Each of them has his own landed properties, cars and living comfortably with their families. Chidi at times went twice a week to Kano to buy his goods and the transportation mode is by road. The same is done by Ebuka. The essence of having to travel and face that road stress is to have the opportunity to make better choices from the displayed goods in Kano which will result in quick resale and also to protect the goods while in transit. Unlike when an order made, usually what is ordered is not what is delivered or there may be other miss up. The foregoing should serve as a lesson to business startups. Don’t be in a rush for anything. And don’t have the mentality that you can successfully trade without some form of stress. Some people sits comfortably in their house and think they can order anything and have the same delivered at the comfort of their houses. Business is not like that. You have to travel yourself and make that contact. If possible, you need to travel frequently in order to make the right choices. Those that go into importation business are in money and trade in millions, if not billions. You cannot have only N50,000 or N100,000 only and start thinking of importation. With such amount you can start with buying from importers within markets in your area or country. Another point is to be wary of the kind of credit you grant to your customers. That remaining N500, may be your profit in a particular good and when you allow a customer to go with the good without completing payment, it may be difficult to recover and the debt is already affecting your business. There is no sentiment in business. Nothing like this person is my friend, brother, sister or cousin, if such sentiments are given room, it may lead to some stories that touch. Business is mainly for the sole purpose of maximizing profit and nothing more. It is different from relationships and charity. Ikenna A. ANYADIKE |

2018 WORLD CUP IN RUSSIA: NIGERIA VS. CROATIA, MY CONCISE OBSERVATION Yesterday, we all viewed with high hopes, as our national team, Nigeria Super Eagles played their first match against Croatia in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia. I must confess that in the build up to the actual playing of that match, in every corner of the country, there were high expectations of the best performance that would lead us to victory in that match. However, just as the popular proverb said it, ”If wishes were horses, beggars would ride”, at the end of the 90minutes match, my hopes, that of my country people and perhaps other African nations who looked up to Nigeria for an impactful performance were all dashed out and shattered with the two goal defeat against the Nigerian Super Eagles by the Croats. My aim here is not to castigate and reprimand the Super Eagles players against the backdrop of their performance in the yesterday match; however, in this my concise observations of the yesterday match, I must not spare the rod where it is necessarily deserved. First, the formation that was adopted by our coach did not favour the players at all. Our natural wings players like Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses were dropped too deep at the back to get the ball before they could attack. Ighalo who was then left in the frontline alone was starved of the necessary supply and had to track back often times to get the ball. Our midfielders were not coordinated and strong enough to trap the ball and stop the emerging Croats from making it further to our box line. I can say that it was a formation that was majorly meant to defend and prevent the opponent Croats from scoring. However, typical of such exertive and firm determination to defend are bound to be such mistakes that led to the own goal and foul that resulted into the awarded penalty. While I saw our players that were determined to defend, I noticed minimal and little efforts by same players to go for a goal. The efforts made at scoring goal were not too impressive. We all know that it is the GOAL that makes the difference in a football match. No matter the aim of a team in a football match, of the first priority and of utmost importance are the goals to be scored. It is quite hard that our players lost morale and focus after that devastating own goal by our very own Etebo. Thus, by the result of the yesterday first match and the previous draw recorded by Argentina and Iceland, with whom we are in the same group, Nigeria is the least in the group with no point to rely upon. Now, here is the real message. This is not the end of it all. That was just only the first match, which I want to believe has served as the real testing/tested match for the Super Eagles in this World Cup in Russia. If our coach and the players can learn from their mistakes in that first match, if they can put it better performance and formations in their subsequent matches, if they can make concerted efforts to go for the goals while maintaining the defensive line, then I believe we would still have a better story to tell in this ongoing World Cup. We cannot afford to lose all hopes at this early stage of the tournament. Let us continue to support our very own Super Eagles players. I believe we have come to this World Cup to make impact, and that particular impact shall we make. LONG LIVE THE SUPER EAGLES GOD BLESS SUPER EAGLES SUPER EAGLES FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE supereaglesforgoalsinrussia LONG LIVE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA WRITTEN BY: Anyadike I.
