smurfy: The answer is 5627 ~ 5600 bullets....WRONG....view my solution |
Simple mensuration problem; we first obtain the volume of the barrel which is a cylinder thus we use 22/7*r^2*h, where r=70/2=35cm and h=49 and inputting these values into the formula we obtain a volume of 188,650cm^3......now we obtain the volume a single bullet which is a sphere(volume of sphere=4/3*pi*r^3) where r=(0.02*100)/2=1 and pi=22/7 and we obtain a volume of 4.1904761cm^3.....we now divide the volume of the barrel by the volume of a bullet to obtain the bullet- capacity of the barrel: 188,650/4.1904761=appr. 45,000bullets(nearest thousand)...no-one was penalised for not rounding off to the nearest thousand, as far one's answers were in the appropriate range |

Question By Quizmaster Alpha Maximus Question: There has recently been an invention of a very effective heavy-duty machine-gun to aid in the fight against terrorism. Its cylindrical barrel has a diameter of 70cm and a length of 49cm. Its spherical bullets are have a diameter of 0.02m. How many bullets can the machine gun hold(correct to the nearest thousand)? (Pi=22/7) |

Solution: This is a simple case related to sum of an A.P. The equation is (49,875,078=n(n-1)/2)-(23,041,866=n(n-1)/2) Solving each seperately and collecting like-terms, the answer obtained is 3,199.......one can alternately solve it using the full formula for sum of an A.P(s=n/2(2a+d(n-1)) for each of the values and add '1' to each of the answers before subtracting(the addition of '1' being a pre-requisite to represent the no of people) |
Question By Quizmaster Alpha Maximus Question: There was a very well-attended conference organised by some oil-tycoons in which some of their top officials, shareholders and dignitaries were present. A lot of pleasantries were exchanged at the event, infact, everybody shook hands with everyone else! A newly installed state-of-art STXGV (a statistics machine) recorded 49,875,078 handshakes . How much less people would have been required for the machine to record 'only' 23,041,866 handshakes? |

smurfy: @RichiezGood suggestion but we already do that, as per , set the questions and send solutions to each other(quizmasters). |
The first part of my last question has already been solved so here's the solution to the second which no-one got right.... 1/2 of the uncle's current age=29 The niece's age is 10, 3 greater than 29=32 Thus, the equation is 10+x=32 X=22 yrs @Smurfy, I create my own word problems and I solve them thoroughly and crosscheck before I send. I KNOW what I'm doing. |
Ignore my first question |
Question By Quiz Master Alpha Maximus Question: A man's age is the equivalent of the sum of twice his niece's age and 38. The difference between the square of the age and her uncle's is 42. In how many years will their ages be simultaneously perfect squares and when will the niece's age be 3 greater than half of her uncle's age? |
Hmmmmm, who will the "mathematical 5" be? |
Only Denniece1 got this(kudos, but don't relax) First we obtain 5% of 2000 which is 100. Next, we acknowledge the fact that the fuel has to have 25% toluene, thus, there will be an increase in the current volume of toluene and also the overall volume of fuel which leads us to this equation(let the unknown quantity of extra toluene be 'x'): (100+x/2000+x)*100=25(needed future perc of toluene) Cross multiplying we have: 100(100+x)=25(2000+x) Its expansion and collection of like-terms gives us '533.33 litres' of toluene as the value of x. |

Quiz Question By Quizmaster Alpha Maximus(this one is easier than the last) Question: 2000 litres of fuel containing a 5% toluene mixture is available for a certain Chevy 265-cid V8 engine. This fuel is also designated for a superior engine, Omega41GB6, that requires a 25% mixture of toluene due to the need for better-quality octane-ratings. How many more litres of toluene must be added to the fuel to meet the superior engine's designations? |
