Crime / Why We Collect Bribes, Extort Nigerians – Police Officers Allegedly Open Up by alphonsojaybaz: 12:34pm On May 05, 2023
Why We Collect Bribes, Extort Nigerians – Police Officers Allegedly Open Up

An officer in the Nigeria Police Force has revealed why many of his colleagues take bribes and extort Nigerians at every opportunity.

According to security personnel who spoke  about the matter, many police officers, particularly thousands recently recruited into the force, have been demoralized and are living in abject poverty because the force has refused to pay them salaries since they joined.

According to him, many of them are struggling to meet their family responsibilities, and they have not been paid in four months.

Makesense Pm  understands that the said badge of constables passed out of the police training institutions on December 29, 2020. Claims by the constable who spoke on anonymity are that they have not been paid since then despite resuming at their duty posts across the country.

He admitted that the majority of the constables were “surviving on bribes and extortion” as a result of the salary delay.

Since January 2023, the officer stated, they have been reporting to their duty posts without pay. The police constable pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to intervene and free them from reliance on others for daily bread.

PLEASE, SOMETHING IS HAPPENING CONCERNING NIGERIA POLICE FORCE’S NEW RECRUIT CONSTABLES THAT PASSED OUT ON DECEMBER 29, 2022. WE HAVE SPENT FOUR MONTHS NOW, AND THE POLICE AUTHORITIES, POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE REFUSED TO PAY US.

AND WE ARE WORKING 12 HOURS A DAY FOR THE WHOLE WEEK. NO TIME FOR ANY OTHER THINGS, PLEASE WE ARE SUFFERING AND DYING OF HUNGER ALREADY. THEY ARE INDIRECTLY TEACHING US CORRUPT PRACTICES, ONE OF THE OFFICERS LAMENTING THE SITUATION REPORTEDLY SAID.

Another who reportedly spoke with the news platform added:

WE NOW BEG FOR FOOD AND TRANSPORT FEE TO GO TO WORK AND WE CANNOT PROTEST BECAUSE IT’S AGAINST THE POLICE REGULATIONS.

AND THE WORST PART OF THIS IS THAT WE ARE BEING POSTED TO VARIOUS SPECIAL DUTIES LIKE WE ARE ALREADY BEING PAID. AND WE MUST GO BECAUSE IT’S AN ORDER. WE MUST LOOK FOR GOOD OR BAD MEANS.

Sports / PSG Set To End ‘relationship’ With Messi by alphonsojaybaz: 7:54am On May 04, 2023
PSG set to end ‘relationship’ with Messi

Paris Saint-Germain’s relationship with Lionel Messi is set to end after two disappointing years, following the French champions’ decision to suspend the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

Messi was expected to lead PSG to their elusive Champions League victory when he arrived in Paris from Barcelona in August 2021, welcomed as a hero by adoring fans.

It hasn’t worked out, and some of those supporters recently developed animosity towards a player they view as a representation of everything the club has done wrong in focusing on superstar acquisitions while failing to assemble a team that is actually competitive.

The Qatar-owned club informed Messi’s agent a month ago that the player was now “much more likely” to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires, despite having appeared to secure his signature for another season at one point. Makesense pm reports,

Messi, who will be 36 in June, played in PSG’s insipid 3-1 home defeat by Lorient in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

He then travelled to Saudi Arabia to fulfil commitments as part of a contract with the country’s tourist office.

As a result, Messi missed a training session pencilled in for Monday following the weekend defeat.

PSG acted swiftly to punish Messi, despite his status as one of the sport’s greats.

He has been suspended even though PSG still need points to retain the French title with five matches left this season.

Court grants ARCON leave to summon Meta in N30bn suit over ‘violation of advert laws

federal high court sitting in Abuja has granted leave to the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) to serve a writ of summons on Meta Platforms Incorporated, owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.

The court granted the application in ARCON’s N30 billion suit pending against the company.

The order allows the writ to be served at Meta’s corporate headquarters in the United States.

In October 2022, ARCON sued Meta and its agent, AT3 Resources Limited, for showing unapproved advertisements to the Nigerian audience.

The regulatory body is seeking a declaration “that the continued publication and exposure of various advertisements directed at the Nigerian market through Facebook and Instagram platforms by Meta Platforms Incorporated without ensuring same are vetted and approved before exposure is illegal, unlawful and a violation of the extant advertising law in Nigeria”.

The agency said the continued exposure of the “unvetted” adverts has led to a “loss of revenue to the federal government”. Makesense pm reports,

The advertising council is seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their privies, agents, servants and associates from publishing any advertising or marketing communications materials without recourse to ARCON in line with the country’s advertising law.

ARCON is also seeking a N30 billion sanction for the continued violation of Nigeria’s advertising laws and for loss of revenue.

May Day: What Buhari Told Tinubu Ahead Of Swearing-In

In his farewell address to Nigerian workers on May 1, President Muhammadu Buhari urged the incoming administration of President-elect Bola Tinubu to treat workers with dignity.

Tinubu will be sworn in as Nigeria’s next president on May 29 unless something unexpected happens.

Remember that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate was declared the winner of the presidential election held on February 25th, 2023 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Prior to the inauguration of the new government, Buhari stated that the incoming leadership must instill socio-economic development, which is driven by the four pillars of the decent work agent, which are to promote jobs and businesses, guarantee workers’ rights, and extend social protection policies.

The outgoing leader also suggested that the incoming administration find a way to promote social dialogue for consensus building among workers while maintaining a sound national industrial relations system, as represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, at the 2023 May Day commemoration held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

Workers’ rights, combined with socioeconomic justice, according to Buhari, make for a happy workplace.

WE, THEREFORE, AGREE THAT A FAIR ECONOMIC STRUCTURE TARGETED AT CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL TO SUCCEED IRRESPECTIVE OF SEX, RACE/ETHNICITY, AGE, DISABILITY, CREED, RELIGION IS SINE QUA NON FOR PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT, BUHARI NOTED.

Politics / Ethylene Oxide: NAFDAC Takes Noodle Samples For Investigation by alphonsojaybaz: 6:38am On May 02, 2023
Ethylene Oxide: NAFDAC Takes Noodle Samples For Investigation

Concerned about the safety of Indomie noodles following the discovery of ethylene oxide in the product by some countries, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken Indomie samples for investigation.

Ethylene oxide is a compound used as a chemical intermediate in the production of various products, it is known to be carcinogenic.

The director-general of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday said the agency was working on the methodology for the analysis.

She said, “Tomorrow, May 2,2023, NAFDAC’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate will randomly sample Indomie noodles (including the seasoning) from the production facilities while Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate samples from the markets.

“The compound of interest is ethylene oxide, so the director, food lab services directorate has been engaged. He is working on the methodology for the analysis.”

Taiwan and Malaysia authorities have recalled Indomie noodles over the cancer-causing compound.

Meanwhile, Adeyeye said importation of Indomie noodles was already banned in the country some years ago, adding that the product is one of the foods on the government prohibition list.

She said it is only Indomie noodles produced in Nigeria that are approved for circulation and consumption, not imported products. Makesense PM reports,

“It should be noted that Indomie noodles have been banned from being imported into the country for many years. It is one of the foods on the government prohibition list. It is not allowed in Nigeria, and therefore not registered by NAFDAC,” she explained.

Adeyeye described the action as extra caution to ensure that the product is not smuggled into the country.

“We also want to be sure that the spices used for the Indomie and other noodles in Nigeria are tested. That is what NAFDAC Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (FSAN) and Post Marketing Surveillance (PMS) are doing this week at the production facilities and in the market, respectively,” she added.

NANS gives MultiChoice 7 days to reverse DStv, GOtv subscription rates

The Pay TV company, Multichoice had on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, announced the new rates, which will begin from May 1, 2023.

But the students have given the company a seven-day ultimatum to reverse its planned increase on DStv and GOtv subscriptions.

In a statement signed by its Coordinator, Adejuwon Olatunji; Deputy Coordinator, Alao John, and Public Relations Officer, Opeoluwa Awoyinfa on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, the group said that MultiChoice was extorting Nigerians and bringing hardship on them.

The statement reads in part, “Today, we are aware that MultiChoice Digital Satellite has increased their tariffs without considering the standard of living of Nigerians. We have also waited for long to see if this same company will dance to the music of Nigerians who have been clamouring for pay as you view tariff but the reverse is the case.

“This is the time to call on the National Broadcasting Commission to go back to the commission act to regulate the ownership, activities and operations of Direct Broadcast Satellite Service Providers. DSTV is one of the leading direct-to-home service providers in Nigeria since its inception of operation far back in 1995 and has also made a lot of profit with over 25 million subscribers which is the largest market for its operations.

“We want the Federal Government to stampede their proposed plan in tariffs increment and also force them to implement the pay-as-you-view system. We are aware that DSTV operates a system of pay-as-you-go tariffs in other countries.”

Issuing the ultimatum, the group asked the company to reverse its tariffs hike and also charge on a ‘pay as you view’ basis. Makesense reports,

“We hereby give seven days ultimatum to MultiChoice Digital Satellite Television to reverse their plan of increasing their tariffs and also yield to the call of Nigerians and also implementing pay as you view tariffs or else we shall be left with no other option than to lock up all offices of DSTV until our demands are met which is the mind of all Nigerians,” the statement reads.

The tariffs hike came barely a year after the Pay TV firm increased its subscriptions rates.

In March 2022, the company said the prices were increased due to the rising costs of inflation and business operations in the country.

‘I’m ready to walk with all Nigerians’ — Tinubu seeks more patriotism in sallah message

Bola Tinubu, president-elect, says he is ready to walk with all Nigerians.

Speaking in a statement on Thursday to felicitate with Muslims on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitri celebration, Tinubu said citizens should constantly seek to become a better version of themselves in patriotism, dedication to duty, and honesty.

“For Muslims in our country and all over the world, Ramadan is a sacred spiritual obligation as one of the five pillars of Islam. With the help of Almighty Allah, we have gone through a period of abstinence, self-discipline, self-reflection, self-purification in gratitude, and total submission to the will of Allah.

We have engaged in fervent prayers and supplications to Allah,” he said.

“Beyond the self-abnegation and pious living that the fasting period imposed on us, the spiritual exercise we just concluded has also helped us to improve our moral character, and refine our minds in pursuit of higher ideals for which there should be no turning back.

“At the heart of our faith and a major demand of all faithful is the requirement to commit ourselves to wholesome living. This entails love for one another, love for fellow humans regardless of creed, region, and ethnicity, love for our communities, and love for country. Makesense Pm reports,

“We are at the dawn of a Renewed Hope for a better, greater, and more prosperous Nigeria and I stand ready to walk with all Nigerians, young and old, male and female, with this opportunity to serve you in honour and dignity.

Politics / Nigerian Youths Demand Afenifere Restructuring, Adebanjo’s Removal by alphonsojaybaz: 8:17am On Apr 19, 2023
Nigerian youths demand Afenifere restructuring, Adebanjo’s removal

Some youths, under the auspices of Afenifere Yoruba Youth Organisation of Nigeria, staged a protest in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Tuesday,  against the leadership of the acting leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political association,  Afenifere,  Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

The protesters, who stormed the residence of the National Leader of the group,  Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, said they had passed a vote of no confidence in Adebanjo’s leadership.

They carried placards with various  inscriptions, such as ‘Pa Fasoranti, pls revoke the mandate you gave Pa Adebanjo now;’ ‘Our vote of no confidence stands;’ ‘Afenifere must be restructured now;’ ‘Pa Fasoranti, please rescue Afenifere;’ ‘Ayo Adebanjo must go;’ ‘Pa Ayo Adebanjo: time to step aside from Afenifere.’

Speaking, the leader of the protesters,  Eric Oluwole,  said the group considered Fasoranti  as the authentic national leader of the Afenifere and called on Adebanjo to immediately step down on his capacity as the acting leader.

He said,  “We cannot allow one leader to mortgage our future. We cannot continue like this.

“The only person we recognise in this Yoruba nation is our Pa Reuben Fasoranti as the National Leader of Afenifere, and he still remains as the National Leader of Afenifere.

“We, hereby, call on Pa Ayo Adebanjo to step down immediately, and he should stop parading himself as the National Leader of Afenifere. He has been acting and we have the letter because baba (Fasoranti) wrote him a letter then that he should act on behalf of him.

“But now, the whole drama has changed, and the youths are involved now and we want to make sure we are part of the restructuring of Afenifere.

“We can only depend on Baba Reuben Fasoranti as the National Leader to immediately call on him (Adebanjo) to step down immediately. We believe that this protest can still yield a good result but we are going to come back again massively in Yoruba nation.

“What we need is sanity in Afenifere and we believe in Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s leadership.

“Recently he said that our own father (Fasoranti) cannot talk to him and we believe that he is not the almighty God of Yoruba nation and the universe. We still believe that we are youths to talk to him. But if he is unable to listen,  we know what to do.

“We are not threatening him. What we are saying is that he should step down in the interest of Afenifere. We want peace and we want Baba Reuben Fasoranti to take over.” Makesense Tv reports,

Politics / Let Judges Do Their Job, Soyinka Urges Obi Supporters by alphonsojaybaz: 9:07am On Apr 08, 2023
Let judges do their job, Soyinka urges Obi supporters

Playwright, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described Obidients as one of the most repulsive, off-putting concoctions he ever encountered in any political arena.

Obidients is a term describing supporters of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who contested the February 25 presidential election.

The elder statesman spoke in a statement on Friday titled, ‘Fascism on course (I)’.

Earlier, Soyinka on Channels Television and later on Arise TV, condemned what he termed the fascist language of the vice-presidential candidate of the LP, Datti Baba-Ahmed, by attempting to dictate judgment to the Supreme Court during a Channels TV interview on the poll won by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Besides, Soyinka faulted voter suppression witnessed in some polling units in Lagos State during the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly poll among other issues.

The Nobel laureate on Tuesday in a statement titled, ‘Media responsibility’, also  dwelt on related issues bordering on the presidential election, noting that his interview with Channels TV was distorted, thereby rendering his remarks completely unrecognisable.

But the Obidients trolled Soyinka online, abusing him and an ex-deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu, who in a Tweet, identified Soyinka’s objectivity and described him as “a phenomenon that unlettered and uncultured people may not fully understand in an age of lazy social media in which many don’t read or think deep.”

Obi and the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are currently challenging the poll result in court.

Soyinka, in his latest statement, said it would appear that a record discharge of toxic sludge from the nation’s notorious smut factory was currently clogging the streets and sewers of the republic of liars.

He said, “It goes to prove the point that provoked the avalanche exactly! The seeds of incipient fascism in the political arena have evidently matured. A climate of fear is being generated. The refusal to entertain corrective criticism, even differing perspectives of the same position has become a badge of honour and certificate of commitment.”

He further said that on the issue, truth was ultimately at stake, counselling that at a most elementary level of social regulation: when one was a party to a conflict, one shouldn’t attempt to intimidate the arbiter, attempt to dictate the outcome or impugn without credible cause, his or her neutrality even before hearing had commenced.

The elder statesman stated, “That is a ground rule of just proceeding. Short of this, truth remains permanently elusive. The ensuing cacophony has been truly bewildering. It strikes me as a possible ploy to smother recent provocations by other, far more trenchant issues, such as revelations of declarations of a religious war.

“If so, let it be known that I have long declared war against religious fundamentalism, the nature of which justifies the butchery, kidnapping and enslavement of students in the name of religion. That aspirant’s alleged gaffe cuts no ice with me.

“Far more alarming was the grotesque fantasy of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court disguised as a wheelchair, zooming off in space to a secret meeting with other parties of the conflict. On its own, that is sufficiently scary. Swiftly followed thereafter by a television tirade of intimidation, it strikes one as more than the mere antics by the mentally deranged.

“The tactics are familiar: ridicule, incriminate, then intimidate. Objective: undermine the structure of justice. Just as a reminder: this writer was not being rhetorical when he declared, on exiting prison detention: Justice is the first condition of humanity.”

“By the way, I do agree with Seun Kuti; ‘Obidients’ is one of the most repulsive, off-putting concoctions I ever encountered in any political arena. Some love it, however, and this is what freedom is about; choice, taste, free emotions.”

He also commented on the viral audio conversation between Obi and the Founder, Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, where the former, who labelled the audio as doctored, purportedly described the poll as a ‘religious war’ and punctuated the conversation with “Yes Daddy.”

On that, the Nobel laureate said, “By contrast, I have no quarrel with ‘Yes Daddy’. Roman Catholics are used to saying ‘Yes, Father’. Secularists say ‘Enh, Baba’. The context and content are what matters, and lies – where established – raise bothersome issues such as integrity deficiency.”

He added that in any adjudication, society found it unacceptable that a party to the dispute would resort to influencing tactics by extra-judicial means – such as bribery, noting that intimidation and threats were merely the obverse complements of material inducement.

He stated, “What the nation needs to know right now is if you are planning to send assassins after such negative analysts! Coming to terms with an unpalatable projected eventuality – sorry – possible eventuality, counsels deep reflection, not demonisation of the bearer of sour news.

“For the seriously committed, it requires pulling back the horns a little in order to regroup, rethink and resurge. Democracy is sometimes a long haul. Some of us have been at it for quite a while.”

Pre-empting that his position in the statement could generate more online attacks from the Obidients, Soyinka said, “I am well aware that the foregoing is further invitation for more nauseous bilge from the besotted. Please, be my guest. It is, after all, one of those special seasons of convergence of two seasons of self-flagellation.”

Condemning the N5m fine imposed on Channels TV by the National Broadcasting Commission over the controversial Datti interview, the essayist said he was willing to engage the LP vice-presidential candidate on the contentious interview or any of his nominees if Channels TV was willing.

He stated, “May I seize this opportunity, by the way, to condemn the sanctions imposed on Channels Television which anchored the performance of the LP candidate. As stated, I watched the programme keenly – saw the valiant efforts of the interviewer to ensure fair hearing.

“I fail to understand just where the station could be faulted, except from a disposition for injustice. To sustain that penalty is to give joy to others who turn Internet into a soakaway for their rancid emissions, yet feel that others should be silenced.

“If Channels TV feels up to it, I offer myself willing to engage Mr Datti – or any nominee of his – on its platform on this very bone of contention – one-on-one – without the malodorous intervention of media trolls, and with the same interviewer as mediator. That should be taken as a serious offer.”

I love Ruger’s music, our beef not deep – Buju BNXN

Afro-fusion artist, BNXN, formerly known as Buju, has said the beef between him and his colleague, Ruger is just a game.

In a recent interview with Pluzz 89.9 FM, BNXN said they are both cool now, while admitting that it was initially a problem of ego.

He said he is a fan of Ruger’s music.

The Finesse crooner said in the music industry, it is difficult for singers to rely on just their music, stressing that controversy promotes longevity in the industry.

BNXN said, “You need to understand that first we are all young. And a lot of time, some people’s ego got attacked sometimes. So, it’s not necessarily like anything. It happens.

“Those things like I said, are part of the game. I tell you this for sure, we [Ruger and I] are cool because on a level he’s doing his thing and I’m doing my thing. I love his music for what it’s. Makesense media reports,

“But, in this game for longevity, you have to have a personality. You just need to have a personality. They gotta know you for something. You can’t just ride with music. You can try but you can’t just ride with music.

“There just had to be like your supporting persona so people can know you for something [other than music],” he added.

AFCON qualifiers: Peseiro hopeful of defeating Guinea-Bissau

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro has promised that the team will defeat the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in today’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match.

The match comes up today in the tiny Indian Ocean country.

Makesense Media reports that the Guinea-Bissau national football team defeated Super Eagles 1-0 in Abuja last week.

Responding to questions on Sunday, the coach of the Super Eagles said, “If we repeat the performance of last Friday in the second leg, we will beat them 3-0. No team can take good luck all the time.”

“We scored two goals against Sierra Leone with less amount of pressure. Then we had about 50 per cent of the opportunities we had today and beat them 2-0.”

Peseiro had said the Super Eagles were unlucky to convert the chances that they created in last match.

He said, “First of all congratulations to Guinea-Bissau. We missed many goals, we could have been here for another hour and not score, sometimes it happens in football,” Peseiro told reporters at the post-match press conference.

“I’m not happy of course, I am sad like my team but they did the maximum. We created many, many clear opportunities but it was a bad day. If we played in the way we played today, we (are supposed to) beat Guinea-Bissau.

“Guinea-Bissau were lucky and very bad luck for us.”

Business / Airfares Soar As Foreign Airlines Hike Exchange Rate by alphonsojaybaz: 8:53am On Mar 27, 2023
Airfares soar as foreign airlines hike exchange rate

International airfares on Nigerian routes have increased by more than 20% after foreign airlines increased the exchange rate for ticket sales from N462 to N551 per dollar.

International passengers flying on Nigerian routes have been paying higher fares after airlines restricted their inventory of lower-cost tickets in order to mitigate the effects of the rising amount of trapped funds.

The International Air Transport Association, the Switzerland-based trade association of the world’s airlines, has increased the naira-dollar exchange rate for ticket sales, which is expected to worsen the plight of Nigerian travellers who are already paying higher airfares.

On Friday, several travel companies confirmed to our correspondent that global distribution system companies had informed them of the latest increase.

They said the development was not unconnected with the difficulty faced by foreign carriers in repatriating their ticket sale proceeds out of Nigeria.

According to travel agents, the increase in the exchange rate has led to an over 20 per cent increase in international airfares.

“Virgin Atlantic which has a promo of about N800,000. This same promo is going for about N1.1m as a result of the increase in the exchange rate,” the chief executive officer of a travel agency, who chose to speak on condition of anonymity, said.

As of January this year, foreign airlines flying into Nigeria had about $743m in trapped funds in Nigeria. IATA has said Nigeria has the highest amount of foreign airlines’ trapped funds globally.

Stakeholders and travel firms have however emphasised the need for the Federal Government to direct the CBN to expedite the release of the trapped funds.

A former President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents-the trade body for local travel agents-Mr Bankole Bernard, who also confirmed the latest increase in IATA’s exchange rate for ticket sales, said the Federal Government needed to honour the provisions of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement signed with foreign countries particularly as it affects the repatriation of funds.

Today, the rate at which we are issuing tickets is N551 to a dollar. Is that the official rate? No, but that is the rate we are issuing tickets, which is moving closer to the black market rate. This means the issue of trapped funds would not have been if it had been properly managed,” he said

“The funds became trapped because we (the government) were not ready to give foreign airlines funds at the official rate. Why didn’t you tell them the rate you would give them funds so that they can sell their tickets at a particular rate as long as it is official? After all, we have multiple exchange rates. So, what will make this one different? Then, there will not be an issue of trapped funds and people will do their business and the agony travellers are facing will not be there.”

The Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Bismarck Rewane, a research firm, said foreign airlines could not be blamed for the latest increase in the exchange rate.

He said, “In dollar terms, airfares have not gone up, It is still the same amount. The increase will only affect those who buy their tickets in naira. But we can’t blame foreign airlines. We need to put ourselves in their shoes. Why can’t they repatriate their funds? They are losing money by not being able to repatriate their funds. Most of their expenses are denominated in dollars, how will they pay for all these services and goods when they can’t repatriate their funds?”

IATA had a few weeks put foreign airlines’ trapped funds in Nigeria at $743,721,097 as of January 2023.

IATA disclosed this in a letter addressed to the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and signed by its Area Manager for West and Central Africa, Dr Samson Fatokun.

IATA urged the minister to intervene and ensure the resolution of the issue of airlines’ blocked funds in Nigeria.

The letter read in part, “For over a year, Nigeria has been the country with the highest amount of airline-blocked funds in the world. Please find attached the comparative table of airlines’ blocked funds by country. Moreover, as of January 2023, airlines’ blocked funds in Nigeria have increased to $743.721.092 from $662m in January 2022 and $549m in December 2022.

While highlighting the social-economic impact of the airline-blocked funds in Nigeria, Fatokun said the increasing backlog of blocked funds of international airlines would impact negatively the foreign direct investment in the country, at a moment the country was expecting investment in the concession of some of its major airports.

He also noted the continued delay in allowing foreign airlines to repatriate their funds violates BASA.

Sirika later promised that the Federal Government would ensure the backlogs of unremitted funds were paid.

He was not specific on when this would be done. The Central Bank of Nigeria had a few months ago released part of the trapped funds. Since then, however, the central bank appears not to be looking in the direction of the foreign carriers as the amount of trapped funds rises on daily basis.

The President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives, Mr Kingsley Nwokoma, said IATA reviews exchange rates periodically, adding that the current increase might have passed through necessary steps.

According to him, foreign carriers have been finding it difficult to repatriate their funds, noting that this has made doing business in Nigeria very difficult.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping colleague’s 9-year-old daughter

A 51-year-old utility officer, Ubregbo Parmer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling his female colleague’s 9-year-old daughter.

Ubregbo convict committed the offence on December 10, 2019, inside his office in Magodo, Lagos.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Thursday, held that the prosecution had sufficiently proven the charge of defilement against the convict.

Soladoye said, “The evidence of the respective prosecution witnesses established the ingredients of the offence against the defendant, who was properly identified by the survivor.

“The survivor gave vivid and gory account of her ordeal in the hands of the defendant.”

The judge added that, “I hereby find him guilty as charged of the one-count charge of defilement, and he is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment. The defendant should have his name registered in the sexual offence register as maintained by Lagos state.” Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Justice Soladoye further berated the survivor’s mother for being negligent in her care and allowing her child to be taken away by her male colleague without supervision.

“The need for proper and good parentage can not be undermined at this age and time where defilement and rape are the order of the day. Parents should be alive to their responsibilities,” stated the judge.

The state counsel, Olufunke Adegoke, presented two witnesses and two exhibits during the trial, while the defendant testified as the sole witness in the case.

PDP Cooked Results Can’t Torpedo My Victory – Alex Otti Boasts, Warns INEC

Alex Otti, the Labour Party’s Abia governorship candidate, has demanded that he be declared the winner of the state’s governorship election on Saturday.

Otti made the declaration during a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, where he stated that results from 16 of the state’s 17 Local Government Areas clearly show that he won the election.

Makesense Tv reports earlier reported the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the indefinite suspension of the collation of the results after political thugs disrupted the process on Sunday.

Thugs said to be affiliated with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stormed INEC’s collation center in Obingwa Local Government Area, attempting to force electoral officers to declare forged results in the LGA.

Speaking at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Otti said that having secured approximately 172,000 votes to the PDP’s 71,000 votes in the 16 LGAs, the ruling party could not “torpedo our victory” by using falsified results from the last LGA, which he claims has less than 30,000 registered voters.

He also warns INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu not to use himself as a tool to subvert the will of the people, emphasizing that he clearly won the majority of votes cast by the people of Abia.

He also urged the commission’s management to do the right thing by ensuring that whatever decision they reach following their ongoing review of Obingwa LGA results reflects the will of the people.

DPO goes wild, opens fire on inspector during argument in Rivers

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO of 9th Mile Police Station in Rivers State, SP Obidike Chukwudi, shot at his junior colleague (Inspector) during argument inside the police facility.

It was gathered that the DPO had earlier detained the Inspector (name withheld) for allegedly leaving his duty post.

According to Makesense Media, multiple sources said that Obidike thereafter shot at the inspector on Monday while inside the cell during an argument.

The action of the DPO is in violation of Nigeria Police Force order 237 which guides the use of firearms by police officers.

“An Inspector was assaulted and shot by the 9th mile Divisional Police Officer after he was detained in the cell for leaving his beat. He fired the bullet inside the cell and he misfired but the shell caused a bruise on the police Inspector. This is an attempted murder, not punishment anymore,” a source familiar with the incident told SaharaReporters.

Another source who is a policeman added, “An incident of violation of force order 237 happened at 9th mile police station on Monday being 13th March 2023.

“The DPO of the police station detained an Inspector for leaving his beat and while he was in cell, the DPO heard him shouting and instead of cautioning, he opened fire on the Inspector.

“This should be looked into by the authorities because police officer has right to life as well. Shooting is not part of the punishment of a defaulted police officer. I don’t even know Nigerian senior police officers can go to the extent of attempted murder.”
