Sports / Deontay Wilder Knocks Out Robert Helenius In First Round Of Comeback Fight by alphonsojaybaz: 1:32pm On Oct 17, 2022
Deontay Wilder knocks out Robert Helenius in first round of comeback fight

Former heavyweight boxing champion, Deontay Wilder celebrated his return to the ring with a stunning signature stoppage of Robert Helenius on Sunday morning, October 16.

Wilder was fighting for the first time since his second successive - and concussive defeat by Tyson Fury more than 12 months ago as he began a comeback journey with hopes of becoming heavyweight world champion again.

Wilder easily dispatched former sparring partner Helenius, landing a short right hand - just Wilder's third of the fight - while backed up in the corner, leaving the Finn prone on the canvas and in need of medical attention.

Wilder took his time in the opening stages as he looked to shed any ring rust, before exploding with a right hand which was high, wide and not particularly handsome.

It took just a right hand to dump Helenius on the canvas with just seconds of the round remaining as the fight was immediately waved off.

"IT'S AMAZING TO BE BACK IN BROOKLYN. THIS ARENA IS LIKE A SECOND HOME TO ME," SAID WILDER.

"IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE BACK; WHEN I CAME OFF THE PLANE AND SET MY FOOT ON THE GROUND I FELT A GREAT ENERGY. I FELT THE LOVE AND I FELT THE SUPPORT AND THAT'S ALL I NEEDED. I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE A GREAT NIGHT FOR ME AND IT WAS.

"I WAS TRYING TO KEEP MY DISTANCE BECAUSE ROBERT HAS A HEART OF A CHAMPION AND I KNEW WHAT HE WAS CAPABLE OF. I DIDN'T TAKE HIM FOR GRANTED AND I LOOKED HIM IN THE EYES AND HE REALLY WANTED IT. WHEN THEY FIGHT DEONTAY WILDER THEY COME WITH THEIR A++ GAME.

"I SET HIM UP, I ALLOWED HIM TO REACH AND WHEN HE REACHED, I TAGGED HIM. IT WAS A GREAT FIGHT AND WHO'S NEXT? I'VE BEEN HEARING RUMOURS ABOUT [OLEKSANDR] USYK BUT I SEE HE'S NOT HERE. MOST OF THE TIMES GUYS SAY THEY WANT ME AND THEY COME TO SHOWS OF MINE, THEY KNOCKOUTS OUT LIKE THAT THEY TURN. THE CORNER.

"I'M READY FOR WHOEVER, WHETHER IT'S ANDY RUIZ OR USYK, BRING IT ON. DEONTAY WILDER IS BACK, THE EXCITEMENT IN THE DIVISION IS BACK. THERE IS NO HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION WITHOUT DEONTAY WILDER, THAT'S FACT!"

Crime / Court Frees Nollywood Film-maker Seun Egbegbe After 6 Years In Prison by alphonsojaybaz: 6:22am On Oct 13, 2022
Court frees Nollywood film-maker Seun Egbegbe after 6 years in prison

A Nollywood film-maker and producer, Olajide Kareem, alias Seun Egbegbe, has been freed by a Federal High court in Lagos, after after spending six years and eight months in prison custody.

Egbegbe was remanded on February 10, 2017, after allegedly obtaining money by false pretence from no fewer than 40 Bureaus De Change operators in different parts of Lagos for over a period of two years between 2015 to 2017.

He was accused of swindling the BDC operators by claiming that he had naira to change into foreign currencies.

The 45-year-old controversial figure in the Yoruba movie industry, was arraigned by the police for alleged fraud involving N39m; $90,000 and £12,550, N39,098,100, respectively.

Egbegbe, who once managed Fuji artistes, Wale Ayinde, Tekoma and Pasuma, was accused of swindling BDC operators.

Unfortunately, the film-maker who financed the production of several Yoruba films under his Ebony Films Productions imprint, had been unable to fulfill the bail conditions more than three years after.

The ex-convict alongside one Oyekan Ayomide were first arraigned on February 10, 2017, before Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, on 36 counts bordering on advance fee fraud.

The duo were later joined by Lawal Kareem, Olalekan Yusuf and Muyideen Shoyombo on a 44 count charge.

On Tuesday, however, the court found Egbegbe guilty of just one of the 44 count charges against him and set him free.

Justice Oguntoyinbo held that 43 of the 44 count charges were crumbled because of lack of witnesses to substantiate their claims.

In addition, the judge held that the prosecuting team failed in the responsibility to provide evidence to be backed with witnesses on Counts 4, 19 and 21.

The judge also said that police tampered with the money recovered from the suspects.

Justice Oguntoyinbo also ruled that all the money recovered from Egbegbe as evidence should be returned to him.

Crime / Fugitive Wanted By Police Arrested After Applying For Job With Police by alphonsojaybaz: 6:03am On Oct 13, 2022
Fugitive wanted by police arrested after applying for job with police
A woman wanted by the police has been apprehended after she applied to work as a security guard for a local sheriff's office.

Zyeama Y. Johnson was arrested on October 4 after she attended what she thought was a job interview with the police.

Ironically, she had applied to work for Hudson County in New Jersey, USA, in their specialist department for finding people who are wanted for outstanding warrants.

"She applied for a job as a security guard," a detective for the Hudson County Sheriff's Office told Newsweek. "Obviously, as part of the background check process, we run them for warrants."

"At that point, we called her in for an interview—or rather what she thought was an interview—and we took her into custody," said the sheriff's office spokesperson.

Asked why Johnson might have deliberately put herself at risk of arrest by applying for a job with the sheriff's office as a fugitive from justice, the spokesperson said, "We don't know."

Johnson had been wanted by authorities in Monroe County, Pennsylvania for failure to appear in court on charges of fraud, as well as an additional 10 bench warrants for failure to appear in court on traffic charges in Jersey City.

County Sheriff Frank Schillari told local news site NJ.com that after Johnson’s arrest, police took a routine inventory of Johnson’s property.

Sheriff’s officers discovered that she had two credit cards that had been reported stolen, and she was subsequently charged with credit card theft.

Johnson is currently being held in Hudson County jail in Kearny awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania.

This isn't the first time someone wanted by the police was caught after applying for a job with the police.

Back in August, it was reported that a South African man dubbed "South Africa's dumbest criminal " was arrested after walking into the police station to check on his application to join the police force.

https://makesensepromotions.com/lionel-messi-will-return-to-barcelona-in-july-2023-when-his-psg-deal-expires/

Lionel Messi will reportedly return to Barcelona next summer after making ‘peace’ with the club’s president following his dramatic exit two years ago.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner made a shocking move to join PSG after Barca released a statement saying he would be leaving due to financial restrictions placed upon them by LaLiga.

However, Messi who joined PSG in 2021 will reportedly return to Barcelona when his contract in the French capital expires next summer.

According to Argentine reporter Veronica Brunati, Messi will return to Barcelona on July 1, 2023, after just two years at Paris Saint-Germain.

It is believed Messi will return to the club after ‘making peace’ with Barcelona president Joan Laporta who was at the centre of the controversy two years ago.

Messi made his debut for the Barcelona senior team in 2004 at just 16 years old and featured 778 times, emerging as a key player. He went on to become Barca’s record scorer with 672 goals including 120 Champions League goals and a record 474 LaLiga goals.

In another news, Barcelona coach Xavi recently called for calm when asked about Messi’s return to Barcelona.

He said: ‘With Leo, let’s see, but it’s not the moment to talk about it right now. You know the love I have for him.

‘He is a friend and I will always wish him the best. Barca is his home, but we’re not doing him any favours speaking about [his future], either. Let’s leave him in peace to enjoy his time in Paris and wish him all the best.’

We are not in anyway threatened - ASUU reacts to FG’s registration of factional body

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has said the registration of a new trade union by the government for academic staff in the university system is inconsequential and does not pose any threat to its existence.

Earlier today, the Federal government presented a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Reacting to the development, Osodeke while speaking to newsmen, said the registration of the factional union is unconstitutional.

“THAT DOES NOT IN ANY WAY AFFECT US. WE ARE A DISCIPLINED AND FOCUSED UNION AND WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING AND WHAT WE ARE AFTER. LET THEM REGISTER AS MANY UNIONS AS THEY LIKE. THAT IS INCONSEQUENTIAL AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED. WE ARE NOT ALSO IN ANY WAY THREATENED. THE SKY IS BIG ENOUGH FOR BIRDS TO FLY.

WE KNOW OUR MEMBERS, WE KNOW OUR STRENGTH AND WE ALSO KNOW WHAT OUR VISION AND MISSION ARE. OUR MEMBERS ARE NOT SABOTEURS OR BOOTLICKERS . OUR STRUGGLE IS FOR A BETTER EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN THE COUNTRY. IF THE SYSTEM IS GOOD, ALL OF US WILL BENEFIT AND IT IS NOT ONLY ASUU MEMBERS’ CHILDREN AND WARDS THAT ARE GOING TO BENEFIT FROM IMPROVED FUNDING AND THE PROVISION OF BETTER FACILITIES IN OUR INSTITUTIONS,” HE SAID.

Osodeke, who also reacted to the allegation by the Presidency that ASUU members are complicit in the corrupt practices in the university system, described such as unfounded.

“AS A UNION, WE HAVE BEEN CHAMPIONING TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. THAT IS WHY WE ARE CALLING FOR THE ADOPTION OF THE UNIVERSITY TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY SOLUTION, UTAS, AS THE PAYMENT PLATFORM IN THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. THOSE INDICTED FOR MISAPPROPRIATING OVER N100 BILLION THROUGH THEIR IPPIS, ARE THEY OUR MEMBERS?

MOREOVER, ONE OF OUR DEMANDS IS THAT VISITATION PANELS BE SET UP TO PROBE THE ACTIVITIES AND THE FINANCES OF UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY. IF WE DON’T WANT CORRUPTION STAMPED OUT, WE WOULD NOT BE ASKING FOR THAT, ” HE EXPLAINED.

Members of the Academic Staff Union Of Universities ASUU have been at loggerheads with the Federal government over the 7-month-old strike embarked upon since February 14 this year.

‘174’ killed in stampede at Indonesia football match

At least 174 people have been feared dead in a stampede at a football match in Indonesia — in one of the world’s worst stadium disasters.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday night after a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at Kanjuruhan Stadium in the eastern city of Malang.

Police in Indonesia said thousands of furious Arema fans invaded the pitch after their team lost the encounter 3-2.

Nico Afinta, East Java police chief, said in an attempt to stop the brawls on the field, officers fired tear gas, triggering the stampede as panicked fans rushed to the exit gates.

“It had gotten anarchic. They started attacking officers, they damaged cars,” BBC quoted Nico to have said.

“We would like to convey that… not all of them were anarchic. Only about 3,000 who entered the pitch.

The police chief added that fleeing fans “went out to one point at the exit. Then there was a build-up, in the process of accumulation there was shortness of breath, lack of oxygen”.

About 180 persons were also injured in the stampede as videos on social media show the moment fans were struggling to escape.

Dollar hits N735, economists predict a further naira slide as campaigns begin
https://makesensepromotions.com/dollar-hits-n735-economists-predict-a-further-naira-slide-as-campaigns-begin/

Economists have warned that Nigeria’s ailing economy might be worsened as political parties and their candidates begin electoral campaigns for the 2023 general elections.

The economists especially warned that the aftermath of the possible excess liquidity in the system by politicians, occasioned by electioneering, might further increase the inflation rate and lead to a further devaluation of the naira.

The dollar hit N735 in the parallel market on Wednesday, the same day electioneering for the elections officially commenced.

The Electoral Act 2022 has a cap on political donations and expenditure by parties and candidates.

The National Bureau of Statistics had earlier in August 2022 said Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 20.5 per cent from 19.64 per cent in July.

Speaking to newsmen, the experts called for stringent measures against money politics in the country, particularly dollarisation of the economy by politicians.

A Professor of Economics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, Sherrifdeen Tella, warned that should politicians release too much cash into the system, there might be dire consequences for the country.

Tella said, “If it is foreign currency, the economy will be awash with a lot of foreign currencies which on the one hand is good. But on the other hand, it is bad because it will cause a lot of inflation. It will further depreciate the naira because people will start changing the foreign currencies to naira that they can spend, and that will cause a further depreciation of the naira. That will result in a higher level of inflation because of the fact that it will lead to a higher cost of production.”

The professor, however, decried that the Nigerian politicians were not likely to obey the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Power outage at the House of Representatives stalled the consideration of a bill to increase transportation and accommodation allowances of NYSC corps members.

The bill, sponsored by Eta Ebora, was listed for consideration on the order paper of the House, but the abrupt disruption of power in the chamber forced the lawmakers to adjourn.

It seeks to amend the NYSC Act and do an upward review of the allowances of corps members along with present realities.

It is unclear how much the bill is proposing to add to the N33,000 earned by corps members in the country.

NDLEA sets ablaze N194b worth of cocaine recovered in Lagos warehouse
https://makesensepromotions.com/ndlea-sets-ablaze-n194b-worth-of-cocaine-recovered-in-lagos-warehouse/

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed 1.8 tons of cocaine recovered by its personnel from a warehouse in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement said tougher time awaits drug barons and cartels operating in Nigeria if they fail to back out of their criminal trade and embrace legitimate ventures.

He said Chairman of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, gave the assurance on Tuesday 27th September 2022 while leading stakeholders to witness the crushing and setting ablaze 1.8 tons of cocaine recovered by the Agency from a warehouse in Ikorodu area of Lagos last week.

The NDLEA had in a well-coordinated and intelligence led operation that lasted two days last week stormed a hidden warehouse at 6 Olukunola street, Solebo estate Ikorodu where 1.8 tons of cocaine were recovered and five suspects including a Jamaican were arrested.

Following the historical seizure, which is the largest in the Agency’s history, an order of the Federal High Court in Lagos was obtained for the public destruction of the consignment.

Speaking at the venue of the public destruction in Badagry area of Lagos Tuesday, Gen. Marwa who was represented by the Agencys Director, Prosecution and Legal Services, Deputy Commander General of Narcotics, DCGN Sunday Joseph, said the sheer volume of the drug haul, with street value put at two hundred and seventy-eight million, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($278, 250,000), equivalent to one hundred and ninety-four billion, seven hundred and seventy-five million (N194, 775,000,000) naira, speaks volume about the extent of the nefarious activities of the drug underworld.

He said this has made it imperative for Nigerians to continue to support NDLEA in the renewed war against illicit drugs.

He said out of the 1.8-ton seizure, 1, 828 blocks of the cocaine will be crushed and set ablaze while the remnant will be secured for purpose of prosecution of the suspects who were brought to witness the procedure and sign the certificate of destruction.

According to the NDLEA boss, the Agency is proceeding with the prosecution of those arrested in connection with this consignment.

“On this, the public can rest assured that NDLEA shall pursue the trial to a logical conclusion. Since January 25, 2021, when we commenced our offensive action against drug traffickers, the Agency has secured record convictions. Presently, 2, 904 drug offenders are serving various jail terms, while other cases are ongoing in court, which we are confident will end in positive results too,” he said.

To the drug underworld, he said the bust of the syndicate responsible for the cocaine warehoused in Ikorodu is a message to drug cartels that their investments in the illicit drug trade will go up in flames as you are about to witness while they also risk losing their freedom because the present NDLEA is committed to arresting, prosecuting and ensuring the conviction of those involved in illicit drugs. That is not all, we now also go after their assets acquired with the proceeds of the criminal trade.

Marwa said the fact that the Ikorodu operation was conducted clinically without any skirmish or bloodshed is further testimony to the evolution of the NDLEA and its new capabilities, and a pointer to the fact that the game has changed in the war against illicit drugs.

He expressed appreciation to the Agencys international partners, especially the American Drug Enforcement Administration (US-DEA) that supported the cocaine syndicate bust and the Nigerian military that provided additional firepower during the operation, as well as other law enforcement agencies that have been supporting efforts to rid Nigeria of illicit drugs.

While soliciting for more support for the Agency’s work, Marwa said the safety of our society is the responsibility of every one of us and every citizen shall be fulfilling his or her civic duty by assisting the Agency to clean up our communities and cities by joining our War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), adding that together, we can make this country secure.”

Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, says the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) is not an investor in the Nigeria Air project.

Sirika made the clarification in a statement issued by James Odaudu, his special assistant on public affairs, on Saturday.

The minister had listed NSIA as part of the local investors with stakes in the national carrier.

He said the NSIA is not part of the private equity ownership of the airline, adding that the error was made during his media briefing.

“We wish to clarify that the Authority (NSIA) is not part of the private equity ownership of the airline, being a government establishment,” Sirika said.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the equity ownership structure of Nigeria Air stands as Ethiopian Airlines 49%, Nigerian private investors (SAHCO, MRS and other institutional investors) 46% and the Federal Government 5%.

“The public, especially the business community and the media, should please note.”

Politics / 2023: Tinubu Attacks Afenifere Leader For Endorsing Peter Obi by alphonsojaybaz: 3:35pm On Sep 25, 2022
2023: Tinubu attacks Afenifere leader for endorsing Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has lambasted Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo for claiming the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation has endorsed the Labour Party Presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi as its candidate for the coming election.

Recall that the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, had in a statement on July 23, said Ahmed Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC “will only give continuity to Buhari’s incompetence. We know Peter Obi very well, that is why we endorse him”.

Also, Peter Obi had, in a tweet on August 23, said he visited the leadership of the group.

He said, “Presently visiting PA Ayo Adebanjo and members of the South and Middle Belt Leadership Forum. The National leaders of the Labour Party and other stakeholders are here too,”

However, in a statement issued on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, director, Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Tinubu alleged that Pa Adebanjo has turned Afenifere into his personal property.

The former Lagos Governor described Adebanjo as the leader of ‘Ohanifere Venture’, insisting that an individual, cannot equate himself with the socio-cultural and socio-political organisation.

The statement reads partly, “Papa Ayo Adebanjo does not speak for Afenifere. He is free as an individual to support anyone he likes, in furtherance of his democratic right.

“We know for a fact that Baba has turned Afenifere into his personal estate as acting leader. We are also certain that there was nowhere Afenifere, as we know it, met and took a decision to adopt Peter Obi as a candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

“We respect the age of Baba Adebanjo, but he cannot turn Afenifere into his personal franchise for any political alliance”.

Russian men rushing to wed women with children to avoid getting drafted in the war
https://makesensepromotions.com/russian-men-rushing-to-wed-women-with-children-to-avoid-getting-drafted-in-the-war/

Desperate Russian men are rushing to wed women with children as they frantically try to avoid getting conscripted for Putin’s war.

Deadbeat dads who abandoned their children are also attempting to reconnect with their ex-lovers in the hopes that they will be spared being drafted into the war in Ukraine.

Others are reportedly hurrying to sign themselves up as carers for elderly relatives they have previously neglected.

Russian men of fighting age are seeking to exploit loopholes that will stop them from getting sent to the frontline after Putin ordered the partial mobilisation of the country.

Up to 300,000 men may be signed up for the war, while figures of up to one million soldiers by next year have been floated.

Russian men rushing to wed women with children to avoid getting drafted in the war

Hundreds of thousands are trying to flee Russia, with queues of 24 to 30 hours reported at border crossings with Kazakhstan, Finland, and Georgia.

Thousands of protesters expressing outrage at the conscription order have been arrested in Russia.

But there have been reports that some of the detained activists have been handed their conscription papers at the police station and rushed to the frontline anyway.

SibReal media reported that marriage register offices were “packed” in the Buryatia republic in eastern Russia as men try to hurriedly marry single mothers to avoid being sent to the war front.

One woman said: “Me and my men went first to Ulan-Ude, but the queue was far too long.”

She added: “Everyone is getting married or applying to establish fatherhood, and children are getting registered to their fathers.”

A journalist based in Tomsk said: “So instead of running away or protesting [about the war mobilisation] they are registering marriages…

“Words fail me.”

Buryatia has seen the highest numbers of recruits to Putin’s war, and university students in Ulan-Ude were filmed being frogmarched by police from their lecture theatres to a conscription office.

Another woman from Moscow said her friend, a single mum of five, was proposed to by one desperate man to avoid being conscripted.

“She laughed so hard when she told me about it, and said looks like she will be super popular in the near future,” she said.

“It seems men with three or more children will not be mobilised.”

Some women may have selfish reasons for wanting to get married as well.

Wives qualify for compensation if their husbands are killed in the war, unmarried partners do not.

Olga, 22, said she had a shotgun wedding to her long-term boyfriend on Thursday.

“If something happens [to him], there would otherwise have been no way to prove I was his partner and the child was his,” she explained.

“Of course, I would have loved a big wedding, with our families celebrating, but I was so scared my husband would be taken [to the front] before we tied the knot that we decided to rush.

“They haven’t knocked at our door yet, only to our neighbours, but I fear it is only a matter of time.
