Politics / 2023: Adeyanju Reveals Apc’s Alleged Strategy For Vote-buying by alphonsojaybaz: 11:06am On Feb 13, 2023
2023: Adeyanju reveals APC’s alleged strategy for vote-buying

Deji Adeyanju, a socio-political activist, has unveiled a new strategy the All Progressives Congress, APC, reportedly plans to use to win the polls via vote-buying.

Adeyanju disclosed that APC plans to write a list and account number of electorates and credit them directly at the polling units.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, He noted that the party intends to take advantage of the fact that the government would not shut down internet banking on election day.

According to Adeyanju: “APC has perfected how to win the election through vote buying. They intend the write list and account number of voters and credit them directly at Polling Units. Is it possible to shut down internet banking on Election Day to protect the sanity of the ballot in the country?”

Nigerians would file out at the polling units on February 25th to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.

APC’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are leading the pack of those slugging it out to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

As the date for the commencement of the election draws closer, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, naira policy is believed to be aimed at tackling vote-buying.

Politics / We’ve Not Given Up On Reconciliation Between Atiku, Wike – PDP by alphonsojaybaz: 10:53am On Feb 13, 2023
We’ve not given up on reconciliation between Atiku, Wike – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says it has not shut the door of reconciliation between Governor Nyesom Wike and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made this known  on Sunday.

Wike has been up in arms with Atiku and the PDP hierarchy since the conclusion the May 2022 special convention in Abuja where he lost the party’s presidential ticket to the former Vice President.

A strong contender, Wike refused to take his loss to Atiku lightly as he unleashed a barrage of tirades against “our enemies”, a veiled reference to the winner and associates.

The vocal politician has used every platform and opportunity – flag-off or commissioning of projects, the media, interviews, public gatherings – to lambast the PDP leaders.

There are speculations that Wike, accused of anti-party activities, is supporting Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, though some presume he prefers Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP.

Months after his boast, the former Minister of Education is yet to openly endorse a candidate less than two weeks to the presidential election. The PDP is optimistic about a peaceful resolution.

However, speaking on Sunday, Ologunagba said “Talks are not done on the pages of newspapers, 24 hours is a lifetime in politics,”

The former House of Representatives member noted that the state of the nation since the APC assumed power far outweighs personal interests, urging citizens to oust the ruling party.

“Our candidate has made it clear that he is open to reconciliation. What is at stake is beyond individual interests, it is the country’s interests. We must come together and clean this mess.

“People are going through a lot…insecurity, no cash, no fuel. All these happening under a party that came to defraud Nigerians. The crisis is complicated by bad policies; this is not what we asked for.

“They printed money, we don’t know how they did it, no adequate information; now the money is not in circulation. What happened? They approved naira redesign but the new notes are not available.

“Are they not the people..their party…keeping the money? There are reports of about N22.5billion allegedly hidden in a Government House (in Northwest). The PDP believes Nigeria is in a bad shape.

“So, regarding reconciliation between Atiku and Wike, we will continue to have conversations,” Ologunagba stressed.

We don’t have enough paper to print new naira notes — CBN

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has said the apex bank does not have the capacity to print adequate new naira notes.

Premium Times reports that Emefiele made the disclosure on Friday, February 10, when he briefed the emergency meeting of the National Council of State.

According to Makesense PM reports, Emefiele said that the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (The Mint), suffers capacity constraints, resulting in the failure to print adequate new notes to replace the old N200, N500 and 1,000 notes.

“The Mint has run out of papers to print N500 and 1,000 notes. They have placed orders with a German firm and De La Rue of the UK (for papers) but they have been placed on a long waiting list, so their orders cannot be met now.

The Mint had received CBN’s request to print 70million copies of the new notes, totalling N126billion to be pumped into circulation by today (yesterday), The Mint doesn’t have the capacity,” a source said.

Politics / As 2023 Nigeria Election Draws Near, Students Might Not Be Able To Vote by alphonsojaybaz: 1:05pm On Feb 06, 2023
As 2023 Nigeria Election draws near, students might not be able to vote

Less than 31 days to one of the most decisive elections in the country and all are geared towards ensuring a smooth outcome of the democratic process. The INEC Chairman Prof Mammod Yakubu has publicly reiterated that despite the current challenges facing the country, the commission would conduct free and fair elections and deliver electoral justice.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says students account for 40 percent of newly registered voters, of a total number of 9,518,188, newly registered voters in Nigeria.

The INEC Chairman, Mammod Yakubu noted that In terms of demographic distribution, 7.2 million new voters, or 76.5% are young people between 18-34 years, while there is a slightly higher number of females (4.8 million or 50.82%) than males (4.6 million or 49.18%) voters. He also said that In terms of occupation, 3.8 million (40.8%) are students.

There is no doubt that students form a relevant percentage of voters in this coming election and their votes to some extent will determine the future of the giant of Africa.

Makesense Promotions has however gathered that some public tertiary institutions have fixed activities that would restrict students from actively taking part in the democratic process. These activities tend to restrict them from exercising their fundamental human right, which is to vote and be voted for.

For example, a closer check at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, academic calendar shows that lectures will end for all students on the 24th of Feb, the eve of the Presidential election, making it almost impossible for students to travel to their respective locations to vote.

Similarly, students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, will also be facing the same issue. The management has set out an e-test for 100-level and large classes from Monday 13th, February, to Saturday, 25th February.

Facts gathered that several institutions including the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) are currently undergoing examinations, and students who are yet to obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) will not be able to beat the deadline.

Students who are eligible to vote might be restricted which can affect the turnout of voters, a fear expressed by Dr. Bayo Fasunwon, Associate Professor of Political Science at Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA).

Dr. Fasunwon noted that many would be unable to vote except institutions are shut a week before and during elections.

” It is expected that mostly, only tertiary students would fall into the voting age. Many would not vote except institutions are shut a week before and during elections. Although, they ought to have registered in their school environment so as to vote. Also, given that the majority of Voters are youths (according to INEC), Voter turnout is technically reduced by about 2 million votes.” he said.

Politics / We Learnt A Lot From What Happened At Osun Election - INEC by alphonsojaybaz: 8:55am On Feb 05, 2023
We learnt a lot from what happened at Osun election - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) did not fail during the last Osun State governorship election.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this in an interview with reporters while monitoring the BVAS mock accreditation exercise in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday.

The Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal had sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke for over-voting at over 700 polling units in the 16 July 2022 governorship election in the state.

Speaking on the matter for the first time, Yakubu who clarified that the BVAS machine was not on trial as being insinuated in some quarters, however said the commission had learnt some lessons from the judgement.

According to him, though it is improper to comment on the matter as it is still in court, the commission would use the lessons learnt from the Osun judgement to improve the process for the general elections.

“The BVAS never failed anywhere and as you have seen here, the machine actually never failed. I wouldn’t like to comment on a matter in court as it is subjudice but in every situation, the commission learns and carries the experience from what has happened to improving the processes for the next election. We have learnt some lessons from what happened and one of the lessons is to be able to transmit the accreditation data.

“During this mock exercise, we have assembled result sheets that will transmit the accreditation data but there is no results sheets here because people have not voted. So on the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) Portal, we have created a new URL for those of you that are on the IReV portal. And if you go home after 2.30pm, you will see the result of the mock transmitted from the 437 polling units (PUs) nationwide, including the details of accreditation and we are going to transmit both the results on election day and the accreditation figures so that the two will rhyme,” Yakubu said.

He said the commission has given Nigerians assurance that on election day, both the accredited data and the actual votes cast will be transmitted simultaneously and accurately.

On the mock accreditation, Yakubu described the process as seamless, saying the commission decided to conduct the exercise to further test the integrity of the machines that would be deployed on election day.

The polling units visited by the INEC chairman were PU018, Post office, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Area 10, and PU03, Near Chief Palace, Bwari Council Area.

The INEC boss also said that there have not been report of failure of the machine from any location where the exercise was conducted.

Politics / 2023: INEC To Deploy 707,384 Presiding Officers by alphonsojaybaz: 9:22am On Feb 01, 2023
2023: INEC to deploy 707,384 presiding officers

For the general elections scheduled to begin on February 25, the Independent National Electoral Commission will deploy 707,384 presiding officers.

The commission added that because electoral education was crucial, it needed to be incorporated into Nigeria’s primary schools’ National Values Curriculum.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, made these remarks at the public unveiling of the primary school Electoral Education Curriculum and Teachers’ Guide.

The curriculum was created in collaboration with the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council, INEC (through the Voter Education Department), National Orientation Agency, Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All, and the Sustaining Electoral Engagement for Democracy project, which was funded by USAID and FCDO and implemented by the National Democratic Institute and IFES.

Okoye said, “We believe that electoral education is important in the goals of our nation. Electoral education is a specialized area and that is why we have this curriculum being infused into the National Values Curriculum in our primary schools.

“For instance, for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, the commission will deploy a total of 707, 384 presiding officers and assistant presiding officers.

“These presiding officers will be drawn from the crop of young men and women doing their National Youth Service Corps, while the assistant presiding officers will be drawn from students from federal tertiary institutions.

“It is therefore important for us to understand the importance of electoral education in the development of our democracy.

“A national civic education curriculum and teachers’ guide with a specific focus on electoral education will prepare our children for the challenges ahead and also prepare them on how to respect other people’s races and also prepare them to assume leadership in future.”

The President of IFES, Anthony Banbury, said its contribution to the project was to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process through effective teaching and learning of civic education in primary schools.

“To catch them young, the revised curriculum is a hallmark innovation that will introduce children and youth very early to the concept, processes, ethics, and values of democratic systems and governance.

“It will be essential for the young people’s orientation to initiate a shift from the existing norms. In the long term, it will increase civic participation and knowledge of democratic systems and values, as the children of today become the adults and the voters of tomorrow,” Banbury said.

The Executive Secretary of NERDC, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, said the aim was to strengthen the fabric of the nation’s democracy for sustainable growth and development.

According to him, since the return of democracy in 1999, citizens’ participation in elections and the electoral process had remained an issue of concern.

He also said that a known reason for this was the lack of adequate electoral knowledge.

“Hence, promoting democratic electoral culture and developing civic skills are therefore necessary for well-informed and responsible participation in elections and in the electoral process,” Junaidu said.

He said that the above informed the initiative of the NERDC in collaboration with IFES to develop the Electoral Education Curriculum for primary schools in Nigeria.

According to him, the curriculum, generally, is developed to expose young learners to the rudiments of democracy and inculcate in them the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for active citizens’ participation in the democratic process.

“Specifically, the curriculum is designed to achieve five key objectives, which are to: equip learners with basic knowledge of the concept of democracy, the role of elections in democracy and good governance.

He said the choice of primary school learners was hinged on the core principle of using education as an instrument of socialisation for the young to assume adult roles for the good of society.

“Thus, the teaching of electoral education at this level will ensure that when children reach voting age, they would have already understood the fundamentals of active participation in the political and electoral process,” Junaidu said.

Makesense Promotions reported that, While commending the management of NERDC for the initiative, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, represented by his Senior Technical Assistant, Dr Claris Ujam, said the curriculum had become a dynamic process for sustainable national development.

He said, “Every time, there are changes or developments happening around the world, the school curricula are affected.

“Therefore, the inclusion of concepts and contents of electoral education under Civic Education is in line with the drive under the Ministry’s Education for Change: A Ministerial Strategic Plan.

“This is to enable the acquisition of citizenship values and skills through quality education. The electoral education curricular contents constitute a remarkable step to create positive change in the election landscape and political development.”

Osun voters should sue INEC — Falana speaks on Adeleke, Oyetola case

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has urged voters in Osun State to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for wasting their votes.

He stated this on Sunday during an interview on Arise TV.

Makesense Promtions reports that, It would be recalled that the Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal sacked Governor Ademola Adeleke for overvoting at over 700 polling units in the Governorship election.

The tribunal asked INEC to give Certificate of Returns to former Governor Gboyega Oyetola.

“What the voters in those areas have to do is to sue INEC for damages that you have wasted my votes,” Mr Falana said.

Mr Falana also said it will be a daunting task by Adeleke’s lawyers to overturn the verdict of the tribunal.

“Looking at the judgement, I believe very strongly that it is going to be a daunting task to impeach the judgement. INEC has to be held completely responsible for what happened.

“INEC will have to go back to the drawing table so that we will not have this experience. INEC will have to put its house in order, If we have this in a presidential election, where you issue one or two reports, it will have a crisis of monumental proportion,” he said.

Politics / Nigerians React To Cbn's Extension For Old Naira Notes by alphonsojaybaz: 8:49am On Jan 30, 2023
Nigerians react to CBN's extension for old Naira notes

Mixed reactions have trailed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)  extension of the deadline for the collection of old naira notes by 10 days.

Some Nigerians who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)on Sunday in Lagos, commended the CBN for the extension, while others said that it could  also lead to a situation where government policies might not be taken seriously in the future.

According to them, the extension is a good decision because it affords some Nigerians, who are yet to deposit their old naira notes, the opportunity to do so.

The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said that the apex bank sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari, to extend the deadline to Feb. 10.

The governor said aside those holding illicit/stolen funds in their homes for speculative purposes, the aim of the extension was to give Nigerians that have naira legitimately earned and trapped, the opportunity to deposit their legitimately trapped monies at the CBN for exchange.

CBN had earlier given Jan. 31, as deadline for people to deposit the old notes in their possession in banks.

Mr Ukaegbu Ndukwe, a software programmer, said the extension by 10 days would give the masses few days of grace to return old notes in their possession to the bank.

“The date is fair, so long it doesn’t get extended to the election date as it might affect the free and fair electoral process in terms of vote buying.

“Most of the people clamouring for this extension may have in their possession hoarded old naira notes and might intentionally want to use this notes for vote buying,” he said.

Mr Michael Akpan, a businessman, said he did not expect the apex bank to give in to pressures by politicians to extend the Jan. 31 deadline.

“I will say it’s okay since it’s not after the elections, but government should learn to stand by its words,” he said.

Mrs Obot Ntuen, a secondary school teacher in Okota, told NAN that she was not happy with the extension.

“I’m not happy with the extention, reason being that Nigerians will not take policy makers and government serious and they will not be law abiding.

“Except there is a good reason for the extension, policy makers should learn to be firm with their policy making.

“It should not be further extended to avoid lawlessness,” Ntuen said.

The Centre for the Promotion of the Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr Muda Yusuf, said, “the Centre believed that 10 days is grossly inadequate to make up for the glaring shortcomings of the apex bank in this process.”

Makesense Promotions reports gathered that, Prof. Ndubisi Nwokoma, Director, Centre for Economic Policy Analysis and Research (CEPAR), University of Lagos, urged the apex bank not to further extend the deadline beyond Feb. 10.

“Ideally, there wouldn’t hae been any need for the extension of the deadline of the old currency beyond Jan. 31, if not for the lackadaisical attitude of the CBN in the implementation of the change, since October 2022.

“It was wrong to still be issuing payments with the old notes through the ATMs even in the few past weeks.

“Why should people pay in their old notes to the banks only to be reissued the same old notes via the ATMs.

“However, the extension will allow the CBN to correct its mistakes and thus instruct the deposit money banks to issue only the new notes, henceforth.

“On no occasion should there be any further extensions beyond Feb. 10, to allay the fears of many that any extensions could encourage vote buying during the forthcoming general elections in February and March,” Ndubisi said.

Politics / Vehicle Importation Drops By 40% As Customs Implements Use Of VIN For Clearing by alphonsojaybaz: 10:42am On Jan 28, 2023
Vehicle importation drops by 40% as Customs implements use of VIN for clearing

This was revealed by the outgoing Controller of the command, acting Assistant Comptroller General, Suleiman Bomai.

He further added that in 2022, some major issues like government policies E.g, the introduction of the VIN had affected the command’s output, especially in the motor vehicle clearing department.

The VIN was introduced earlier in 2022 and was meant to automatically determine the value of import duty that is expected to be paid on any imported cars by any importer immediately after the vehicle is passed through a dedicated scanning machine.

The process was suspended in March 2022 after it was rejected by customs agents. It was later, reintroduced in May 2022.

The few weeks' suspension was to give freight forwarders a one-month waiver to allow them to clear their backlog of stranded vehicles.

Makesense Promotions gathered that, Speaking further, Bomai stated that in the year under review, the terminal mostly handled vehicles which amounted to about 80 per cent of the cargoes handled in the terminal.

More data showed that from January to October 2021, a total of 192,287 units of vehicles came into the country. This amount was reduced by 40% as only 114,159 units were imported through the same terminal in the same review period in 2022.

The terminal is responsible for the importation of most vehicles coming to Nigeria.

Apart from the drop in vehicle importation, a document sighted by The Punch correspondent further revealed that from January to October 2022, 122 vessels berthed at the ports when compared with 167 vessels recorded within the same period in the previous year.

Crime / Police Arrest Alleged Nigerian Drug Kingpin In India by alphonsojaybaz: 10:48am On Dec 16, 2022
Police arrest alleged Nigerian drug kingpin in India

The anti-narcotic wing of Thrissur city police in India have arrested a Nigerian national who is allegedly a major operator in the gang supplying MDMA in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Police identified the accused as Ken alias Ebuka Victor Anayo, 27, a resident of Delhi.

In a statement on Thursday, December 15, 2022, the police said that the drug gang was targeting the youngsters in these states.

Police said they zeroed in on him by chasing the leads received during the probe of a case relating to the seizure of 196 gms of MDMA from Mannuthy on May 13, this year.

During the interrogation of the arrested accused in that case, Burhanudeen from Chavakkad, police could identify that he was sourcing MDMA from Sudanese national Muhammed Babiker Ali and Palestine national Hassan.

Later, the duo were arrested from Bengaluru, and 300 gms of MDMA was seized from them. Their interrogation revealed that another Sudanese was supplying MDMA to them.

The accused gave police the name of the suspect as Ken, and it took them three months to elicit more details about his hideout in Delhi.

Ken was arrested from the ‘Nigerian Colony’ in Delhi, where many chronic offenders are allegedly residing, with Delhi Police’s help. He was produced at the court in Saket, Delhi and detained in Tihar Jail for three days.

Ken was later brought to Thrissur with the court’s permission, the release said. Police said Ken did not have a passport or visa and only had a refugee certificate.

Explaining the importance of Ken’s arrest, the police said though arrest of people peddling drugs was quite common, it was rare that the main suppliers were booked.

Police officers who arrested Ken included Mannuthy police station SI N Pradeep and anti-narcotic wing of the city police SIs NG Suvrathakumar and P Rakesh.

Man arrested for kidnapping his step son and demanding for ransom from his wife

An 8-year-old boy who was kidnapped by his stepfather has been rescued by operatives of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

DCI said the boy’s distraught mother Everline Nandera reported his “disappearance” at Embakasi police station, adding that her husband identified as Nemwel Ondari, 32, had left her a note demanding Ksh50,000 as ransom to release the minor.

She also revealed that he threatened to kill the boy should she delay paying the said ransom.

The DCI report read;

“Nandera told detectives that she had left their home in Embakasi’s Tel Aviv area at the crack of dawn, headed for Muthurwa market. But upon coming back at around 9:20 am, she found her husband and son missing.”A note had been left behind by the husband Nemwel Ondari, 32, demanding a ransom of Sh50,000, for the release of the boy. In the note, the man also warned his wife that he would kill the boy using a kitchen knife which he had carried, should she try any monkey business.”

After security operatives embarked on a rescue mission, the suspect was nabbed at the NMS Green Park matatu terminus off Haile Sellasie Avenue in Nairobi.

The report added;

“Immediately the woman filled her report at Embakasi police station, detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) based at DCI Nairobi area were assembled and a manhunt for the suspect was launched.”The detectives assisted by their Embakasi counterparts traced the suspect and arrested him at the NMS Green Park matatu terminus off Haile Sellasie avenue, a few hours later as he eagerly waited for the ransom to be deposited into his Mpesa account.”

A preliminary investigation established that the couple had engaged in a heated disagreement the previous night leading to the incident.

Family / Surrogacy: Grandmother, 56 Gives Birth To Her Son And Daughter-In-law’s Baby by alphonsojaybaz: 1:00pm On Nov 05, 2022
Surogate : Grandmother, 56, gives birth to her son and daughter-in-law’s baby

A grandmother from Utah was a gestational carrier for her son and daughter-in-law and she gave birth to her granddaughter named Hannah.

Hannah’s mom, Cambria Hauck, told TODAY Parents back in September that she could not carry another pregnancy after previously delivering two sets of twins.

After Cambria’s last delivery, she developed placenta increta (when the placenta remains in the uterus) and had an emergency hysterectomy.

Cambria and Jeff had planned to use their stored embryos from past fertility treatments for another baby, but as Cambria didn’t want to risk her life.

That’s when her husband, Jeff’s 56-year-old mother Nancy Hauck stepped in.

Nancy, a mother-of-five, told TODAY Parents: “I could just feel this calling to offer to carry for them.

Grandmother, 56, gives birth to her son and daughter-in-law

“I knew I was too old. I knew it wasn’t going to be possible, even though that’s exactly what’s happened. I just felt I needed to tell them I would be willing to do it.”

In October 2021, Nancy made a generous proposal to her son and daughter-in-law.

“When Nancy came to us, I know most people would probably be like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s crazy,’ but it didn’t feel like that,” Cambria told TODAY Parents.

“There was just so much peace around the whole conversation and around the whole experience.”

After medical evaluations, doctors determined Nancy was a “good candidate” despite her age.

She became pregnant after an embryo transfer and delivered Hannah on Nov. 2, 2022.

“She is here and my heart could explode,” Hannah’s mom, Cambria Hauck, wrote on Instagram Friday, Nov. 4, sharing a video of her mother-in-law Nancy Hauck giving birth while surrounded by family. “She is perfect in every way.”

Nancy told People that she was in labor for nine hours.

When Hannah arrived, she weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long.

“Everything went perfectly and we are feeling so blessed to have her in our family,” she said, adding that she is “facing new emotions of having a baby, but not bringing the baby home with me afterwards.”

Cambria called Hannah’s birthday “sacred” because she arrived during Día de los Muertos (aka, Day of the Dead), a holiday widely celebrated in Mexico by people as a way to celebrate their deceased family members.

“And her ancestors on both sides had a HUGE part in getting her here,” Cambria wrote on Instagram.

“Not only that, but she was carried and brought into the world by her sweet nana, her ancestor. Nothing is a coincidence, and her birth date is not a coincidence either.” Cambria added that Nancy is “amazing in every way.”

Politics / Six Fascinating Facts About Lagos by alphonsojaybaz: 3:54pm On Nov 04, 2022
Six fascinating facts about Lagos

Lagos, the sixth-largest city in the world by city population is known for its beach resorts, nightlife and activity.

Nigeria has 36 states and one of them is Lagos State. Though it is the smallest state in the country, Lagos remains to be the most populous and a major financial centre.

Here are facts about this megacity, some you know others you don't.

1. It has the Tallest Building in West Africa

Lagos state hosts the tallest building in West Africa, NECOM house towers and it is 160m above the city.

2. The Third Mainland Bridge which connects Lagos Island to the mainland was the longest bridge in Africa measuring 11.8 km until 1996. Built by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the official name of the bridge is Ibrahim Babangida Bridge.

3. Lagos Handles 80% of the Country’s Imports

Lagos handles majority of Nigeria's imports. Located in the Southwest beach line of Nigeria, Lagos port is responsible for processing 80% of goods in Nigeria.

This port is also mentioned as one of the top 10 in Africa.

4. Lagos was called Eko before colonisation by locals. It served as a major centre for slave-trade, from which then Oba of Benin Ado and all of his successors for over four centuries supported - until 1841 when Oba Akitoye ascended to the throne of Lagos and attempted to ban slave-trading.

Local merchants strongly opposed the intended move, and deposed, exiled the king and installed Akitoye's brother Kosoko as Oba.

5. Lagos maintained its status as capital when Nigeria obtained its independence from Britain in 1960. Lagos was, therefore, the capital city of Nigeria from 1914 until 1991, when it was replaced with Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory.

6. Until the coming of the Benins, Lagos's geographic boundary was Lagos Mainland. Lagos Island, the seat of the Oba of Lagos, then consisted of a pepper farm and fishing posts. No one lived there. The name Eko was given to it by its first king, Oba Ado, during its early history. Lagos also saw periods of rule by the Kingdom of Benin.

Crime / Dollar Crisis: EFCC Arrests 87 Forex Dealers In Lagos, Abuja, Kano by alphonsojaybaz: 10:46am On Nov 03, 2022
Dollar Crisis: EFCC arrests 87 forex dealers in Lagos, Abuja, Kano

The raid started on Tuesday, November 1, 2022. and yesterday, the detectives arrested no fewer than 87 forex dealers in Abuja, Lagos and Kano states.

According to Makesense Promotions, the EFCC operatives ransacked the vaults of forex dealers in Abuja for stash of dollars and naira.

During the raid, the detectives reportedly arrested 25 legal and illegal forex dealers in addition to the 40 arrested they arrested at the Wuse offices of the Association of Bureau de Change Operators on Tuesday.

The EFCC operatives also seized the phones of those that were arrested.

Also, in Lagos and Kano, about 14 and eight BDC operators were arrested respectively at BDC markets in the states.

The EFCC operatives started raiding BDC centres following the arrest of Ismaila Atumeyi, the Kogi State House of Assembly candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Atumeyi was arrested in Abuja on Sunday, October 30, 2022, with N326m and $140,500 cash alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster.

Reason for the raid: It is believed that the EFCC’s operation against BDCs is targeted at tracking illicit funds from terrorists, bandits and politicians who might want to convert their stash of dollars to naira to beat the redesign of naira notes recently announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN said the new notes would be released on December 15.

Reacting to the raid in Abuja, the Assistant Provost, Association of Bureau de Change Operators, Zone 4, Wuse, Mallam Muhammed Nera said 13 out of the 25 BDC operators arrested by the EFCC detectives have been released.

He noted, however, that their phones are still with the EFCC officials.

Describing the operation as illegal, Nera said the EFCC did not present an arrest or search warrant before ransacking their offices.

Politics / Second Nigeria Bridge Completed, Says Fashola by alphonsojaybaz: 4:58pm On Oct 19, 2022
Second Nigeria Bridge completed, says Fashola

Babatunde Fashola, minister of works and housing, says the construction of the Second Niger Bridge is complete.

Fashola said this at the unveiling of the President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecard series (2015-2023) on Wednesday in Abuja.

“Second Niger Bridge is completed. What is remaining is a 4km interchange road at the Asaba end and 2km out of a 7km link road at the Onitsha end,” Fashola said.

“The first thing we did when we came into power was we expanded our budget on road infrastructure, sought alternative sources of funding through SUKUK, Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme.”

Listing the achievements of his ministry, Fashola said 12 road projects covering about 896km have been completed, commissioned and handed over to their communities in the season of completion and impact.

He also said the government is executing 83 road rehabilitation projects in federal tertiary institutions across the country with 66 projects completed and 46 commissioned.

“Some of the Super Eagles that were promised houses in 1994 have been allocated their houses. After 28 years, President Muhammmadu Buhari approved it and fulfilled the pledge,” he added.
