According to Vanguard , the gunmen, numbering five, also assaulted the octogenarian by using iron rods and some dangerous weapons on him. His mobile phone, electronic gadgets and other valuables were reportedly stolen. “The hoodlums reportedly stormed the one-storey building located on Adebayo Mukuolu Street at about 1.30 am in a Toyota car. They parked their vehicle close to the gate with one of the gang members inside, while others scaled the high walls of the publisher’s expansive compound,” Vanguard said in its report. “They cut the burglary proof of one of the windows with chisel, from where they gained access into one of the sitting rooms… when they could not open the entrance door leading to his bedroom, they broke the ceiling and succeeded in getting in.” He was said to have been ordered to “bring the money or get killed”. “Two of them were armed with pistols, while the rest had iron rods, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons,” the newspaper quoted a witness as saying. Amuka is a veteran journalist. In his heyday, his column ‘Sad Sam’ attracted a large following. Before he established Vanguard in 1983, Amuka worked as an editor at PUNCH, which he co-founded. Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has commenced the building of helipads in selected hospitals in the state. The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr (Mrs) Uju Nwogu, disclosed this during the inauguration of the ambassadors of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), a non-government organization founded by the wife of the state governor, Ebelechukwu, at the Women Development Centre, Awka yesterday. Nwogu, who represented the governor at the event, said the helicopter parks were conceived to hasten movement in times of emergency like in accidents, and save lives that would otherwise be lost if immediate attention was not paid. The construction of one of the helipads she said had already begun at the Onitsha General Hospital, and would soon be extended to other major hospitals in the state. “In case of critical referrals, arrangements could be quickly made to flow a patient abroad without delay because the helicopter would take the patient direct from the state to the nearest International Airport,” she said. She hailed Obiano’s commitment to the realization of his campaign promises to the people of the state even as she commended the wife of the governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, for using CAFE to better the lots of the less privileged in the state, especially some widows and downtrodden whom NGO built houses for.
