CrimeICPC Arraigns Nigerian Judge, Margaret Igbeta, Who Saved N840million In 11 Years by Amarachi1990(op): 8:53am On Sep 03, 2019
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has approached a Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, for an order of interim injunction for the forfeiture of N840 million traced to a retired President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Margaret Igbeta.

The Commission, in an ex-parte motion filed at the court, said that the order would stop Justice Igbeta from accessing the money alleged to have been obtained through fraudulent activities in the course of her official duties.

ICPC noted that the request for the interim forfeiture was filed pursuant to Section 48 (1), (2) and (3) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and Section 6 (6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

Igbeta is being accused by ICPC investigators of opening an account in the name of her housemaid, Theodora Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million.

Rasheedat A. Okoduwa, spokesman of the commission said: “The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has requested a Federal High Court, Abuja, to order the interim forfeiture of N840 million traced to a retired President of the Benue State Customary Court of Appeal, Mrs. Margaret Igbeta.

“The Commission, in an ex-parte motion filed at the court, said that the order would stop Mrs. Igbeta from accessing the money alleged to have been obtained through fraudulent activities in the course of her official duties.

“ICPC noted that the request for the interim forfeiture is pursuant to Section 48 (1), (2) and (3) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and Section 6 (6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal was accused of operating a proxy fixed deposit account in the name of her maid, one Theodora Atsu, with Ecobank Plc, where she accumulated N870, 321, 492.15 between 2008 and 2019.

“She was said to have opened the account with her passport and the name of Atsu on the 5th of March, 2008, with an initial deposit of N8 million. She subsequently made several other huge deposits including N123, 745, 925.57 and N5 million, in the months of March and May, 2008.

“It was also noted by the Commission that the money was far above her legitimate earnings both as a judge and President of the Customary Court of Appeal within the period that the account was operated and would have used to meet the infrastructural needs of the citizens and development of the nation. ICPC therefore prayed the court to grant the order in the interest of the

CrimeEnvironmental Sanitation Turns Violent As Hoodlums Attack Task Force In Ogun by Amarachi1990(op): 7:43am On Sep 02, 2019
A warder of the Nigerian Prison Service, simply identified as Ahmed, alongside other members of an environmental task force, was on Saturday beaten blue and black by some hoodlums for attempting to arrest them in Abeokuta during the monthly Ogun State environmental sanitation.

The hoodlums, who were roaming about against the rule of the three-hour exercise along the Brewery/Akin Olugbade/Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, were stopped by the Environmental Task Force for contravening the law.

The task force, comprising officials of different security agencies in the state, was said to have driven in a Black Maria and mobile court van to the place.

It was learnt that the attempt by the task force to apprehend the miscreants infuriated and prompted them to pounce on Ahmed, leading to a “street fight.”
A statement by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Yetunde Dina, and signed by the Information Officer of the ministry, Rotimi Oduniyi, said, “no fewer than 80 persons had been arrested for various infractions of the Environmental Laws of the state.”

Dina said the 80 persons were arrested in Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode after they were found guilty of contravening the laws by the environmental mobile courts.

She said the ministry would continue to prosecute those who contravene the laws, adding that it was mandatory for residents to clean their environment during the monthly sanitation.

She, however, commended many of the residents for complying with the laws, adding that their attitude had improved the environmental rating of the state.

PoliticsIkpeazu-led Government Has Weaponized Hunger In Abia – Alex Otti Attack Ikpeazu by Amarachi1990(op): 10:33pm On Sep 01, 2019
Alex Otti, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the last 2019 general elections in Abia state, has declared that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, administration has weaponized hunger and poverty against the people of the State.

Otti who made the declaration in a press statement issued to reporters in Aba on Sunday evening, by his Media Assistant, Ferdinand Ekeoma, decried the insincerity of Ikpeazu-led government towards the welfare of Abia civil servants and pensioners.

He again, claimed that despite tranches of bailout funds and Paris Refund Club accrued to Abia by the federal government for the payment of Salary arrears owed to State workforce, as well as execution of infrastructural projects, the governor had decided to impoverished the citizenry.

Parts of the statement read, “I’m pained that workers in many state government owned institutions are being owed up to 15 months salary arrears while pensioners are being owed 32 months pension arrears. This leadership atrocity defeats every pretence of sincerity and seriousness on the side of the Okezie Ikpeazu led government. No unmotivated workforce can give a healthy output.

“To add insult to injury, the government, in an unpatriotic bid to abandon it’s responsibility, has brought a destructive dichotomy that is alien to our civil service by introducing what it calls “Core and Non Core Civil Servants. That after receiving over 30 Billion naira in Bailout fund and Paris Club refunds, not to mention the hundreds of billions that have accrued to the state as federal allocations and internally generated revenues, and yet the governor just set up a committee to look into these unpaid arrears, shows that the Ikpeazu led government does not care about the welfare of our suffering people, let alone the general development of the state.

“On August 29, I was present at the governorship tribunal to witness the adoption of final written addresses in the suit my party and I filed against the declaration of Ikpeazu as governor by INEC, unfortunately, it turned out to be a ground for display of primitive hooliganism by women and youths hired by the government to come and constitute nuisance in court.

“At the premises of the court, the hoodlums who were dressed in Ikpeazu’s campaign attires were seen and loudly heard insulting me with their derogatory songs, but they were overwhelmed by progressive Abians who freely trooped out to the court to support our sincere search for leadership direction through civilized means.

“Ironically, while the hired sychophants were doing the demeaning hatchet job at the court premises, hundreds of pensioners had barricaded the gate of Government House Umuahia protesting against the non-payment of their 32 months pension arrears. So who is deceiving who?

“However, we do not begrudge those few misguided Abians, because in a state where hunger has been weaponized, and many lacking three square meals a day, it takes rare courage, discipline and grace of God to refuse to prostrate under the slave master’s table, therefore let’s support, encourage, inspire and educate such brethren to realise that with the present scenario, their future and those of their children are doomed”.

Recall that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu had during his Statewide broadcast to mark the 28th Anniversary of the creation of Abia state held in August 27th, assured the people of the State that his administration will complete every ongoing infrastructural projects before the expiration of his second term.

PoliticsBuhari Lacks Commitment To End Poverty – ASUU by Amarachi1990(op): 10:24pm On Sep 01, 2019
President Buhari has been slammed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over his comment of channelling resources into education to end poverty.

The Chairman of the Union at the University of Ibadan, Professor Deji Omole who spoke on Sunday, September 1, described the President's statement as political. Alleging that President Buhari has shown hatred to fund and offer Nigerians qualitative education, the ASUU chairman also stated that the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu is also not different from his employer.

He recalled how the Minister of Education made so many political statements including declaring a state of emergency in the education sector during President Buhari's first tenure, but refused to act on his words afterwards.

“He is back to a familiar terrain. We are also in that same terrain. He spent more than three years in his first term and made so many political statements which were never implemented. One of such statements was the fact that they were going to declare state of emergency in the education sector and till he left office in his first term that was not done.

“In fact there was no attempt towards that direction. Rather than moving towards declaring state of emergency, what we saw was further reduction in the budgetary allocation to education. I don’t think anyone should expect any radical change from what happened to education in his first term and from what is going to happen.

“The administration has demonstrated its hatred for education by constantly reducing the budgetary allocation to education. Most of their policies are anti-university.

“For example, in UI today, it’s almost impossible to recruit new staff meanwhile people are dying as a result of excess work and people are retiring and you are not employing new people. So, I don’t expect sharp departure from what it used to be. He does not need to tell us. We all know.

“All the developed world have been able to solve their problems through education and that is why we have always been engaging different governments that the only antidote to poverty is putting adequate attention to educating the masses.

"No nation can ever grow beyond the quality of education given to its citizens. Nobody will come from America to develop Nigeria. Nigeria can only be developed by Nigerians themselves and they can only develop if they have quality education to grow the economy. So it is not enough to make a political statement, you must follow it with action,” he said.

PoliticsBuhari To Traditional, Religious Leaders: Stop Escalating Tiv/jukun Crisis by Amarachi1990(op): 6:34pm On Aug 30, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the government and people of Benue and Taraba States to exercise restraint following the gruesome killing of Rev. Fr. David Tanko at Kpankufu Village on Wukari road in Taraba.
The President, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, also directed the Taraba and Benue State Governors, traditional rulers, specifically the Tor Tiv and the Aku Uka of Wukari, religious and community leaders in the two states to meet urgently to bring an end to persistent violent clashes between Jukun and Tiv people.

According to the President, “the murder of the Catholic Priest highlights the urgency of addressing this embarrassing and persistent conflict.”

Describing such frenzy of human destruction, violent attacks on people and property in the communities by the warring parties as unacceptable, the President said the Federal Government will not sit idly and watch the deep-seated antagonistic relationship between the Tiv and Jukun people fester.

The President said: ”I have watched with trepidation and disbelief how hate and bigotry have inhabited the human soul, resulting in brothers killing brothers.

”On behalf of the Federal government and the entire people of the country, I offer my condolences to the Catholic community, the government and people of Taraba over the losses arising from recent incidents involving the warring communities.

“The persistent deaths and destruction and the seeming desire by the warring sides to push each other to extinction is embarrassing, and this is against the essence of our ethnic and religious diversity in the country.
“Progress is impossible where violence and destruction are allowed to dominate our daily lives

Acknowledging that the Tiv/Jukun violence is one of Nigeria’s most persistent and intractable security problems, President Buhari assured the affected communities that the Federal government will not leave them to their fate or treat cases of communal violence with levity and indifference.

“The deployment of security men can only provide a temporary solution.

”The long term and lasting solution to this deep-seated antagonistic relationship between the warring factions depend on the willingness of those involved to listen to reason and give peace a chance.

“It is time for leaders of the ethnic groups to come together and draw up a roadmap for lasting peace. The impact of this persistent violence on the social and economic life of the people is incalculable,” the President said.

To this end, a high level intervention from the Federal level made up religious, community leaders and top security operatives is being put together by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to examine all issues underlying the conflicts in the hope of finding a permanent solution.

CrimeDpo Flogged Grand Mother To Coma In Benin (video) by Amarachi1990(op): 11:25am On Aug 28, 2019
A grandmother, identified as Mrs Bisi Ogedegbe, is currently lying unconscious in a hospital in Benin, Edo State, after being assaulted with a belt by a DPO in the State.

Giving an account of how it happened, her son said: “My mom is critically unconscious in the hospital after the DPO of a police station in Benin flogged her with his belt.

It all started when my younger sister was driving through the police station this morning and some policemen stopped her and asked for the documents of the car which she presented to them.

After seeing the documents they told her they would seize it till her husband comes to the station because he is wanted. They took her to their station at Ugbor and detained her and her 1-year-old son.

She immediately called my mom who went there to solicit for her. My mom demanded to know what she had done and the officers directed her to the DPO’s office.

When she got there, she started to beg the man to let her go that she did nothing wrong. The DPO insisted that he won’t talk to her and she was still begging when he pulled his belt and flogged her till she fell on the floor and started crying for help.

Now she has been rushed to hospital by the same DPO who assaulted her. Two different hospitals rejected her until the 3rd one, Samomen’s Medical Centre, admitted her and place her on drips.

You can see the belt he used to flog her on the table. My younger sister was detained behind bars for even making the videos of my mom. This is the DPO who did all this. We are trying to get justice. She has now been transferred to the police clinic in Benin.
