Had an encounter with some state tax operators last year, when I sat them down and told them my plight and why I don't ever think the government deserves my tax, they were nearly on their knees begging me.

It's never about payment but it's about what you guys do with our taxes

Good post and utterance from a progressive and well-meaning Nigerian. Very different to the post of the nuisances above yours.

Sure that is always a worry but we have never had a decent culture of proper collection of taxes from those who can and should pay it.

I feel we should begin from that point at least and then play our part challenging Government to spend what is collected judiciously.

What we have now is condemnable i.e a situation where tax collection is lax and virtually non-existent because Government is too focused on oil income to care about other legitimate avenues of raising money to use developing Nigeria. The principle of collecting tax efficiently is sacrosanct to all serious nations of the world.
Let's first talk about corruption of government and his workers

Those who are paying now are they managing that one??

And why are their staffs aiding others that are not paying or paying what's due??

This is not rocket science, a government that have a penchant for unaccountability can never and will never be trusted with peoples taxes

The people that are decieving you with borrow borrow slogan in ADC and elupee will still borrow if they ever get to power ( ask Alex otri and co).

Economics is a social science with basic principles and law.
Your politics ,tribal sentiment ,bias or feelings cannot alter it.

@ Tinubu's administration is following the path of all these basics economics principles and that's why we are seen massive positive results on the macro economics indices.

If your macros are robust enough with reliable figures, it will surely get to the streets gradually ( the micro economics ). Honest people in the country can allude to this gradual easing but the haters and tribal bigots stalk to the old narratives of hunger and all that.

The past govts have operated the systems to patch up the micros by pleasing the streets with no solid macro economics foundations to support it because political leaders just want to win elections by avoiding hard choices or the needed reforms to spark the Nigeria development revolution.
But Una say he don already pay all the loans from previous government now, so why should we still dey borrow?

There is no country in the world that doesn't borrow to run their government. Even Countries with great economic indices like the Scandinavians. Only illiterates in Nigeria think borrowing is bad.
These countries have better structures in place, they even still have subsidies in place, but ours have removed all shocks absorbers and yet he still wants us to believe we must be borrowing every now and then

No one says borrowing is bad but when it becomes reckless as we are seeing right now, then there is a problem, you borrow to share to imaginary poor households

Yeah, the fact that tinubu supported someone like buhari and is following in his footsteps...that's enough reason not to support him

We are saying the same thing, it's just that you misread my post.

You are a good and nice and rich person.

Problem with subsidy was by August 2022, it was eating over 90% of our revenue. That means keeping it would have meant eventually government won't have been able to pay salaries, and meet its obligations (and those corrupt politicans won't be able to loot, lol)...and eventually we would have run out of money and been in severe debt.

Like I always say, subsidy should have gone since 1993. 2012 was the last chance to remove it without pains, but you guys said no.
Who said No??

Is it not the same Tinubu that mobilizes you his foot soldiers 😀😀😀

And we could have done it in a different manner, an economy that's battling high unemployment and underemployment doesn't have any business removing all subsidies, cos people will find some means to stay afloat

Mortgage system is non-existent, we run a debit economy, it was always gonna be hard on people but boom instead of calling the people together, fashion a way out, he took out subsidy without knowing exactly what to be done

The government has since spent more money on frivolities, creating lesser number of jobs than every other president, did lesser social safety project than every other president but yet you guys want us to believe that he's doing fine

Is that it?

Stop lying... Hardship has eased, NOT 'worsened' in the last few months.

The worst period was when the fuel subsidy was ended and naira floated, and inflation sky high.

Many have adjusted from that, and the effects are easing, and prices of essentials are falling.

And the great thing is there is now more money for development as seen in the fact that EVERY STATE IS A CONSTRUCTION SITE NOW.
So because many adjusted from that now means things are at ease?? 😀😀

Is this the same Nigeria that me and you dey Sha??

PoliticsRe: We’re In Support Of Tinubu’s Borrowing Plan – Speaker Abbas by ambale(m): 8:50am On Sep 23, 2025
nairalanda1:
(DISCLAIMER; I am not here to defend tinubu, and I never have voted for the man. Period.)

This year's budget was based on oil being at 75 dollars per barrel throughout the year at least. INSTEAD ....oil fell below 70 dollars from the end of January...and it got worse

So, we got two options now...borrowing, and or raising taxes.

Note my disclaimer above....tinubu is being forced to borrow because in 2015 he helped buhari into power, and buhari did not diversify the economy, and right now he is following the footsteps of buhari in not diversifying the economy. Tinubu is a failure because there is no plan to make more money for our country.

By the way, if it was not for subsidy removal, things would have been worse. Subsidy removal meant that percentage of government revenue spent on debt service went from 97% to 68% (some say it has dropped to 50%). But that does not translate to an overall increase in revenue, just an increase in available revenue for government to share.
You're just going back and forth

The fact that Tinubu knew Buhari never diversified the economy and still praised him to high heavens and still even fraternizing with his family says a lot about you and him

Una no dey everly stable

You took out subsidy on virtually everything, and we met our revenue target in August, but na still mad borrowing we dey talk about

Why do many Nigerians on Social Media have this incurable urge to insult or curse anyone who espouse a contrary opinion such that it has become almost impossible to have meaningful discussions (which often involve exchanges of different views) in the Nigerian cyber space without insults, curses and abuses?

I regularly visit the Social Media sites of South Africa, US,UK, India,Morocco and several other countries. Their citizens discuss ,far more intelligently than what we see on Nigerian Social Media with citizens, permanently transferring aggressions on other citizens they perceived are different from them.
I only responded to your comment cos you're gratifying your oppressors

Those countries you mention don't pamper anyone who looks like an oppressor
But here in your own country, a man will steal large funds to go build mansions abroad and he would hire people like you to praise him to high heavens
