This woman takes herself so seriously. That's how she went ahead to open a thread for most popular nairalander, putting her name in the poll. Cheap publicity stunt.

Foreign Affairs / Secret Plan To Save Earth From Asteroid by amebono1: 3:24am On Dec 31, 2009
Russian scientists will soon meet in secret to work on a plan for saving Earth from a possible catastrophic collision with a giant asteroid in 26 years, the head of Russia's space agency said on Wednesday.

"We will soon hold a closed meeting of our collegium, the science-technical council to look at what can be done" to prevent the asteroid Apophis from slamming into the planet in 2036, Anatoly Perminov told Voice of Russia radio.

"We are talking about people's lives," Perminov was quoted by news agencies as telling the radio station.

"Better to spend a few hundred million dollars to create a system for preventing a collision than to wait until it happens and hundreds of thousands of people are killed," he said.

The Apophis asteroid measures approximately 350 metres in diameter and RIA Novosti news agency said that if it were to hit Earth when it passes nearby in 2036 it would create a new desert the size of France.

Perminov said a serious plan to prevent such a catastrophe would probably be an international project involving Russian, European, US and Chinese space experts.

Interfax quoted him as saying that one option would be to build a new "space apparatus" designed solely for the purpose of diverting Apophis from a collision course with Earth safely.

"There won't be any nuclear explosions," Perminov said. "Everything will be done according to the laws of physics. We will examine all of this."

In a statement dated from October and posted on its website, the US space agency NASA said new calculations on the path of Apophis indicated "a significantly reduced likelihood of a hazardous encounter with Earth in 2036."

"Updated computational techniques and newly available data indicate the probability of an Earth encounter on April 13, 2036, for Apophis has dropped from one-in-45,000 to about four-in-a-million," NASA said.

RIA Novosti said the asteroid was expected to pass within 30,000km of Earth in 2029 - closer than some geo-stationary satellites - and could shift course to hit Earth seven years after that.

Family / Mum Made 'mistake' Leaving Son In Car by amebono1: 2:55am On Dec 23, 2009
A Sydney woman who left her toddler son locked inside a car in scorching temperatures while she went shopping has admitted making a "stupid mistake", authorities say.

The 18-month-old was rescued by shopkeepers who used a hammer to smash their way into a four-wheel drive and rescue the screaming youngster in the car park of a shopping centre at McGraths Hill in northwest Sydney on Tuesday.

The temperature inside the vehicle was estimated to be more than 60 degrees Celsius.
The boy's 34-year-old mother had been contacted by caseworkers investigating the matter, authorities said on Wednesday.

"I understand that this incident is out of character for the mother and she is very remorseful," Community Services Minister Linda Burney said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
"She knows that she's made a very stupid mistake."

Police confirm they will interview the woman, a mother of five, later on Wednesday.
Ms Burney said leaving a child locked in a car in any circumstances was against the law and parents may face fines of up to $22,000 under the Children and Young Persons Act.

Real estate agent Peter Cassidy, himself a grandfather, used a hammer to smash the Toyota's window on Tuesday.
He rescued the boy with help from nearby shop manager Colin Grinyer.

"When I first looked in there the kid, the baby, was very distressed, very distressed. There was perspiration pouring off him and he was very red in the face," Mr Cassidy told Macquarie Radio.
Mr Grinyer climbed into the vehicle to find the child still strapped to his seat.

"As soon as I picked him up out of the seat and put my arms around behind the baby's head that was just soaking wet, the seat as well," Mr Grinyer said.
The father of two said the heat inside the car would have been "well over 60 degrees".

A worker from the nearby Harvey Norman store called Macquarie Radio to say the mother was shopping in his outlet at the time and the vehicle's registration was broadcast without response.
Another caller, Irene, claiming to be a friend of the mother, said the incident was just a "terrible accident".

"She's so upset and distressed about what has happened," Irene said.
"This poor little baby is everything to her, and she would never deliberately do it."

Irene said the woman had just dropped off her other children and forgot the boy was still in the back of the car.

"It was a terrible accident that she's never going to forget, but she is the best mother I know," she said.

Celebrities / Death Threat On Michelle Obama by amebono1: 2:54am On Dec 23, 2009
Authorities say a woman accused of threatening to kill First Lady Michelle Obama is in federal custody in Honolulu as the Obama family plans to travel to Hawaii.

The Secret Service says Kristy Lee Roshia called its Boston office last month and told a receptionist, "I will kill Michelle Obama" and "I will kill Marines."

During the same call, she said she would "blow away" Michelle Obama, a Secret Service document states.

Roshia has a history of leaving rambling messages and sending poems, love letters and photographs of herself to the Secret Service, according to an affidavit.

Gallery: First Lady fashionista

Agents arrested Roshia on Saturday after she told them she knew where President Barack Obama and his wife will be staying during a visit to the islands later this week.

As early as 2004, she told the agency that "although her mission is to assassinate the president, she has no desire to hurt him."

Roshia was also charged with lunging at a Secret Service agent, striking him in the arms and face during her arrest.

She was being held without bail pending a Wednesday detention hearing.
