Politics / APC Considering Bishop Mathew Kukah Others For Vice President. by Amein(m): 8:19am On Jun 10, 2022
As national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, savours his victory at the presidential primary, the party is said to be in a dilemma over who to pick as his running mate for the 2023 election.

Various caucuses in the party are reportedly behind the push for eight names as likely preferred choice as running mate.

No fewer than six camps in the APC in the North are backing separate individuals, including serving and former state governors, as well as ex-ministers who played key roles at the conventions that produced the current APC national officers and the just-concluded presidential primary in Abuja.

The eight names that have so far emerged included a leading critic of the APC federal administration.

All the names that have been thrown up are Governors Babagana Zulum (Borno), Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Abubakar Badaru (Jigawa), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano) and Samuel Lalong (Plateau); former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

Zulum is reportedly being considered by the Progressives Governors as their likely choice, against the deal a source said Tinubu had with Shettima, the arrowhead of his campaign organisation ahead of the recent primary.

“The only drawback for Kashim Shettima is that he’s not Hausa/Fulani and that it will be the first time Hausa/ Fulani will not be represented in government. The same holds for Dogara, Boss, Lalong.

“Another source claimed that there is a strong push for Bishop Hassan Matthew Kukah who retires later this year to balance the ticket, in spite of his occasional acerbic views on the APC federal administration.”

ADVERTISING
Some said Tinubu’s emergence as APC candidate has been generating ripples, particularly in parts of the North, with leaders of the northern political establishment going back to the drawing board to re-strategise on the way to ensure that the interest of the North in the power locus is defended and preserved after the next general election in the country.

It was learnt that the power brokers have not ruled out the possibility of a Muslim-Muslim ticket for APC if it hopes to win the 2023 presidential election.

The Muslim-Muslim agenda is said to be the response of the Northern establishment to a raging campaign in the North that many prospective voters are threatening to vote against the APC if it fails to pick a Muslim from the North as running mate to Tinubu.

According to them, apart from one or two persons, APC lacks a figure in the mould of Atiku that can rally Christian politicians from the North to guarantee victory for the ruling party.

The source added: The APC is likely to fly a Muslim/Muslim ticket because some influential members of the northern establishment have insisted that they do not want a Christian vice president in the North.

“There’s no Christian who can match Kashim Shettima in the entire North. Dogara can’t win more than Tafawa Balewa Local Governnent Area in Bauchi State. The SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha, is neither Hausa nor Fulani and can’t win in multi-ethnic Adamawa State.

“Lalong is neither Hausa nor Fulani stock, so the majority Hausa Fulani may not accept him. Let’s look at the turn of events, something tells me it will be a Muslim/ Muslim ticket.”

However, some influential members of the northern establishment are said to perceive Lalong “as not being part of them.”

He is seen as a member of the ethnic minorities who are spread across such states as Plateau, Benue, Kogi and Niger. Besides, Lalong, who is the current chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, is said not to enjoy the support of some camps of other presidential aspirants apart from that of former minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

He was accused of dodging other aspirants when they visited his state to lobby delegates to the primary.

Those pushing for el-Rufai to become running mate claimed that it was the key demand of delegates when Tinubu visited Kaduna to lobby them.

Career / Re: Has Any Federal Civil Servant Received The New Minimum Wage? by Amein(m): 6:44pm On May 26, 2022
PRESS RELEASE

LABOUR MINISTRY URGES CALM, AS PAYMENT OF CONSEQUENTIAL MINIMUM WAGE ARREARS TO EDUCATION SECTOR WORKERS COMMENCES

The attention of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has been drawn to complaints emanating from leaders of some education sector-based unions that their members were yet to receive the arrears of the Minimum Wage Consequential Adjustment, which the Federal Government had since approved and started paying from the Office of Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) for disbursement to the affected employees in the Education Sector.

On receiving the complaints, the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Dr. Chris Ngige has contacted the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF), which both confirmed that payments had since commenced. The Minister further elicited firm assurances that all workers who are yet to receive their payment, would be paid before the end of the week.

Among those affected are the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Consequently, the Honourable Minister appeals to the unions to remain calm, assuring that the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, remains committed to meeting its obligations to them on this issue of the payment of the Consequential Minimum Wage arrears as agreed at the last conciliation meeting. Sen. Dr. Ngige also said the Federal Government had made strenuous effort to cash-back this payment, necessitating the release of the ongoing payment by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning since May 19, 2022, one month earlier than the agreed date of June 16, 2022, as a sign of good faith to enable the affected unions to call off the present in

Politics / Ipob Hoist There Flag In Benue Cominity by Amein(m): 7:58pm On Nov 02, 2020
The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has alleqgedly hoisted a flag in Ekile community of Ado Local Government Area in Benue State.

Daily Trust gathered on Monday that the people of Ekile, a rural community bordering Ebonyi State had woken up on Friday to find the IPOB flag standing in their locality.

IPOB kills 6 soldiers, 4 policemen in Rivers, Wike insists
IPOB directs members to resume peaceful protests on Monday
Confirming the development, the council chairman of Ado LGA, James Oche, admitted the strange presence of a flag in his domain, saying however that no one was caught hosting the flag and they don’t actually know those responsible for it or their mission.

Oche said that investigation to unravel the identity of those behind the flag has begun.

The council chairman who spoke through his Supervisory Councillor on Social Development, Education and Information, Attah Ede, maintained that they will not cede any part of Ado land to IPOB as he noted that the area only shares boundary with Ebonyi which isn’t a crime in anyway.

In a similar vein, a former chairman of Ado LGA, Otse Otokpa, told newsmen in Makurdi by telephone that it was the third time, the Biafra agitators would be hosting a flag in Ado land, stressing that it happened in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Otokpa noted that apart from hosting the flags then, they also wrote an inscription on a log of wood and footpaths indicating that the area was Biafra territory.

The ex-chairman said there was a time they also built a house in the place but he was later informed that the Department of State Service (DSS) went to dismantle the structure.

He however informed at the time of this report, that the Ado chairman, Oche had gone with soldiers to assess the area.

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Benue Command, DSP Catherine Anene, said she was not yet briefed on the matter.

Science/Technology / Yusuf Sambo, The Nigerian Engineer Leading Scotland’s 5G Revolution by Amein(m): 8:20pm On Sep 09, 2019
Much of the global market in 2019 has been driven by the trade wars between the United States and The Peoples Republic of China. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that no US company should use telecommunications equipment made by technology companies that pose national security risks.

The ban was targeted at Huawei, the Chinese tech company leading 5G revolution in Asia. Experts says the US may lose as much as $500 billion, if China beats America to the best 5G technology — highlighting how important 5G will be in the years ahead. The countries that lead the 5G revolution will earn billions of dollars, and greatly improve their economies, and drive global change — one of such countries is the United Kingdom.

According to Nicola Sturgeon, the first woman to become the first minister of Scotland, said the Scotland is aiming to be the 5G leader in the UK. She says 5G could enable Scotland to add about £17 billion to GDP by 2035 and create 160,000 jobs.
At the heart of Scotland’s 5G revolution is Nigeria’s Yusuf Abdul Sambo!

WHO IS YUSUF SAMBO?

Yusuf Abdulrahman Sambo is a research associate and the 5G-SON (self-organised network) testbed lead at the University of Glasgow, UK. Sambo was born in 1988 in Kaduna. He hails from Ikara local government, Kaduna state.

He is the son of Abdulrahman Sambo, former acting executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The building blocks of his sterling career were laid at Command Children School, Abuja, where he had his primary education, and Zaria Academy, Shika, where he learnt at the secondary education level. He would go on to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, where he graduated in 2010 with a second-class upper degree in electrical engineering.

By 2011, a year after graduating from ABU, Sambo already completed his master’s degree in Mobile and Satellite Communications at the University of Surrey (with distinction and two publications).
Born to a medical doctor, who remains his role model, Sambo says his love for IT was encouraged by his father, who introduced him to the power of information and communications technology at a very young age.

Sambo says his father, despite being a medical doctor by training, proofreads all his tech papers, and has always been interested in all he is research and academic works.
PhD AT 27
Sambo completed his Ph.D. at 27
Following a distinct result during his masters at Surrey, Sambo got a full Ph.D. scholarship to work on a European Union-funded project on designing low electromagnetic emission future networks. He took the offer and started the Ph.D.
But like everything with the golden fish, there is no hiding place; during his first year of Ph.D., he secured a mobility funding, to conduct research on mobile communications at the Texas A&M University in Qatar.

At the age of 27, he completed his Ph.D. in Mobile Communications from the 5G Innovation Centre, reputed as the world’s largest academic research centre dedicated to next-generation mobile and wireless connectivity, at the University of Surrey in 2016.

Sambo has since tapped into the centre’s vision to drive the fourth industrial revolution “to enable a world where everything is provided wirelessly to the end device by a fixed and mobile (converged) infrastructure that functions across the whole geography”. The internet of things!
LECTURER AT BAZE UNIVERSITY, ABUJA
Sambo showcasing his student’s work at Baze University
Despite being able to thrive anywhere in the world, Sambo returned to Nigeria upon graduation from Surrey, to transfer knowledge and give back to the Nigerian system. He worked briefly as a network engineer at Suburban Telecoms.

He also lectured at Baze University, Abuja, between July 2016 and August 2017. He taught three modules to undergraduate students at the university, and would later become a supervisor of the Electrical Engineering Department at the university in Nigeria’s capital.

His students made a Bluetooth controlled rover (picture above), which was demonstrated when Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano state, visited the university.

While at Baze, he co-founded Baze Youth Forum, a gathering for progressive youths to share ideas on issues of common interest. During this period, he also joined Fleissen & Company, an independent research and consulting company, as a consultant and worked on several projects.
The company helps organisations to resolve complex problems in oil and gas, power, manufacturing, telecoms & technology (T&T), and water sectors.
PRODUCED THE world’s first 5G popup network
Sambo presenting 5G popup networks his team designed.

This can be deployed in just two minutes
Sambo is currently a research associate in the Communication, Sensing and Imaging Group of the University of Glasgow working on a £1.2 million EPSRC-funded project on designing autonomous and resilient emergency communication systems.
His main research interests include EMF exposure reduction, radio resource management, energy efficiency, wireless sensor networks and device-to-device (D2D) communication.

He has designed and built the first real-time 5G testbed dedicated to Self-Organised Networks (SON) in the UK which runs on general-purpose processors.

At Glasgow, he has also produced several proofs-of-concept and demonstrated various 5G use-cases including a prototype for the world’s first popup network that can be deployed in less than 2 minutes for emergency communications and rural connectivity.

His works have also made it possible to dynamically switch on/off 5G small cells by using machine learning for traffic prediction and multi-sensor fusion that result of 5G networks by up to 50 percent.

Griezmann: Messi hasn't been
in contact but Suarez has
welcomed me to Barcelona

Tom Webber

The former Atletico Madrid forward was
presented on July 14 but the Blaugrana
club captain is yet to speak to him
Antoine Griezmann says he is yet to
hear from Lionel Messi after joining
Barcelona , but has received a message
from Luis Suarez to welcome him to
Catalunya.

After paying €120 million (£107/
$134m) to activate the release clause in
Griezmann's Atletico Madrid
contract, Barca presented the forward as
their latest signing on July 14.
The France international said he
received a warm welcome from those
present on the club's tour to Japan ,
where they will play Chelsea and Vissel
Kobe in the Rakuten Cup, despite being
nutmegged twice in his first training
session.

Reports have emerged that Messi wants
Barca to re-sign Neymar from Paris
Saint-Germain although the Catalans
could find it difficult to do so unless they
offload players, having already spent big
on Griezmann.
Suarez and Messi are not present in
Asia due to their Copa America
commitments for Uruguay and Argentina
respectively, but only the former has
been in touch with him so far.
"The truth is it started badly because
they nutmegged me twice in my first
rondo. Luckily I have learned the
lesson," Griezmann said at a news
conference ahead of Tuesday's meeting
with Chelsea.

"Messi has not called me yet, but
Suarez did. He congratulated me and
welcomed me.
"The group has welcomed me and I am
happy to share a dressing room with
them. Hopefully I can help in the best
way possible."

Atletico challenged the legitimacy of
Griezmann's transfer to Barcelona,
alleging the La Liga champions should
have to pay the €200m (£180m/
$224m) release clause that was still
active when they began discussions.
Griezmann would not be drawn on his
former club's complaint and stated his
focus was on adapting to his new team.
"I did everything as well as possible with
respect to Diego Simeone, my former
team-mates and Atletico Madrid to
leave on good terms," he said.
"It's an issue for them. I am calm and
all that matters is starting well
with Barcelona, which is the most
important thing.

"I heard about it [the complaint]. It's a
club where I gave my all. I'm very calm.
The only thing that matters to me right
now is understanding the coach's
tactics, getting on with my team-mates
and enjoying football."
On Simeone, he added: "Our relationship
was more than a coach and a player,
we're like family. I got on very well with
him.

"He was important for what I did on the
pitch and for my private life. I owe him a
lot and I love him a lot. Our relationship
will carry on, even after retirement."
