Lol, true but I use anything o, marker shilees:inclusive |
Glad you understand noncy21, anyone with questions? |
Now to my own skirt draft
|
Next From Mark 2, place a ruler perpendicular to the fold and mark waistline width A (remember your waist measurement divided by 4, this was part of our measurements at the beginning) From Mark 3, place a ruler perpendicular to the fold and mark hip width B Mark the desired length D. ***all measurements are taken from the top of the skirt, i.e where the waist begins |
Lemme demonstrate with a rough sketch before I show you the one I did. 1. On the top left of your brown paper, mark a spot for the waistline,(this is marked 1 in my rough sketch). Draw a straight line to the right. 2. Mark half an inch or 1 inch above that first mark to plot the waistline curve (marked 2 in my sketch) 3. Mark the distance from waist to hip (marked 3 in my sketch) 4. Measure your desired length and mark it (marked 4 in my sketch)
|
So on to stage 2. Get out your brown paper, ruler, curve, and biro. A few notes before I start the process. In pattern drafting, we usually draft the front and back differently especially for the bodice. But for skirts it's possible that the back and front are the same. So when drafting we usually draft half of what we intend to make. For example we want to make a skirt, we are drafting the front of the skirt which we may later use to cut the back. But we draft half of the front of the skirt, then place on a fold of fabric to get the full front. This is because we want to get exactly the measurements for the left and right sides of the skirt front. You'll understand this better as we go ahead, for now just concentrate on the steps. |
Lol noncy21 everything is fine o. was waiting for you guys to tell me to proceed na . Am at work now, will update by evening. Thanks for checking ![]() |
For example, my waist is 32 inches, I will add 2 inch sewing allowance and 2 inch ease (you can add more or less). This will give me a total of 36inches which i'll divide by 4 to get 9 inches. Do the same for the hip measurement. Then take the waist to hip measurement, mine is 8 inches, I will add the same sewing allowance I used at the waist to this to give me 10 inches. This is the measurement we'll use here. Take the length you want your skirt to be, mine is 30 inches, I'll add 1 inch for the hem and the 2 inches we took from the waist to make the final measurement, 33inches. Any other questions? |
tapingil:Your waist is the smallest part of your body, while your hip the the largest To get the waist easily tie a string around your middle and see where it hits you most snugly (usually around your navel) then take that measurement. That is your original waist. However people alter this (like they did for the model in the picture attached) because they usually don't want their skirts beginning from that point. So you can alter it to where you want your skirt to begin. The original waist is still very important as this is what we will use to draft our bodice and dress patterns. So make sure you get both the original and the one for the purpose of this skirt drafting ( if you don't want to use the original waist point) Your waist to hip measurement is the distance between the last two lines in the pic. That is, where you took your waist measurement to where the hip (fullest part of your body) begins.

Lemme know if there's any confusion or if I should go ahead |
So we start by taking measurements. So will list out the measurements we need to draft our first pattern which is a simple straight skirt. 1.) Waist _____+2inches SA+2inch ease=______divide by 4 =A_____ inches 2.) Hips _______+2inch SA+2inch ease=______ divide by 4 = B_______inches 3.) Waist to hips _____+____ at waist =C_____inches 4.) Desired length____+1inch hem + _____ SA at waist = D________ inches Note*** SA refers to seam allowance, half inch for each seam * ease provides breathing room |
OK, we have quite a crowd. good stuff. So before we start I will let you know what materials we need.1. Pencil/ eraser 2. Brown paper ( about #200 for a dozen) 3.ruler ( transparent) 4. Long ruler (also called tailor's ruler) 4. T square ( optional) 5. French curve (#200 for the set). For drawing curved lines like the armhole 6. Measuring tape Long list, but the things are cheap, promise. Brown paper is good for beginners so you can clearly see what you are doing. Later on you can switch to a cheaper option. Some people use newspapers pinned together. These materials can be gotten at your local bookshop. So lemme know when you are set. |
So I know a little about pattern drafting and want to share my knowledge with some people. I also want to learn from more experienced people. Depending on the number of people that show interest, we'll begin. It's not an easy task so don't want to waste my time I barely have. Would also plead for patience when we begin cos my job is pretty tasking but will try my best to update as often as I can. So if you're interested signify by raising your hand. Lol |
goforwardagu:noncy21 I have sent the email. Couldn't attach the files cos they were too large. But I have sent the link to get them and the names of the books. |
Thanks. Explain your last point please larosa: |
Hmmm, can that be done on air? If it's possible would like to learn too o. Following. Second thoughts why not get a sewing pattern and learn from it. That's what I did. There are also some good videos on YouTube. If you like I could send you some drafting e-books I own. Drop your email if interested. noncy21: |
Petitediva14:Wow, this is discouraging. More comments please |

Hubby taught me to drive and I learned in about a week because I was determined to learn fast. He was very patient and madep an excellent teacher. The driving practice was even a bonding experience for us. He offered to teach me to swim some months later and I gladly obliged thinking it'll be the same experience, that will be a story for another day. But suffice it to say I wouldn't be attending that class again. ![]() |
abulude:Academic is fair at a little over 100k, research isn't as good especially in private sectors. Medical is much better, they have a package called call duty allowance included in their salary which the others do not. |
Wow, learned a lot, thank you guys. Am still waiting for the account number to pay to though. Since I told them I will not rewrite my resignation letter, they haven't contacted me again. |

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," Melissa Rivers said in a written statement today. "She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother." Melissa Rivers added that she and her son, Cooper, who is Joan Rivers' grandson, "have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon." Joan Rivers, who co-hosted the popular E! TV show "Fashion Police," had been hard at work recently, critiquing the outfits worn by stars at the MTV Video Music Awards and the Emmys with her usual acerbic wit. On Aug. 28, however, she was in New York City having surgery when she suffered cardiac arrest. She was rushed to the hospital, where she arrived unconscious and doctors kept her sedated. On Sept. 2, her daughter, Melissa Rivers, revealed that she had been placed on life support. "My mother has been moved out of intensive care and into a private room where she is being kept comfortable," she added in a statement the next day. "Thank you for your continued support." Rivers, who changed her name from "Joan Molinsky" when she entered show business, began her acting career in a play opposite Barbra Streisand before appearing on "Candid Camera." In 1965, the future talk show host made her first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." and Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show." "When I started out, a pretty girl did not go into comedy. If you saw a pretty girl walk into a nightclub, she was automatically a singer. Comedy was all white, older men," Rivers wrote in 2012. "I didn’t even want to be a comedian. Nobody wanted to be a comedian!" Carson became a mentor to Rivers, and eventually, in 1983, she became his permanent guest host. However, in 1986, she left to host her own competing show on Fox, "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers," though it only lasted a year. It also cost her friendship with Carson: After she accepted the job, the two never spoke again. The show was also mired in personal tragedy. Rivers' second husband, Edgar Rosenberg, the father of her only child, her daughter, Melissa, committed suicide the same year she was fired from the show. At the time, she, too, considered suicide. "Melissa wasn’t talking to me, my career was in the toilet, I’d lost my Vegas contracts, I’d been fired from Fox," she told the Daily Beast last month. "Carson and NBC had put out such bad publicity about me. I was a pariah. I wasn’t invited anywhere. I was a non-person. At one point, I thought, 'What's the point? This is stupid.' "What saved me," she continued, "was my dog jumped into my lap. I thought, 'No one will take care of him.' ... I had the gun in my lap, and the dog sat on the gun. I lecture on suicide because things turn around. I tell people this is a horrible, awful dark moment, but it will change and you must know it’s going to change and you push forward. I look back and think, 'Life is great, life goes on. It changes.'" It did. In 1989, she launched a daytime talk show, "The Joan Rivers Show," for which she won an Outstanding Talk Show Host Emmy. A few years later, she and Melissa began doing awards show coverage for E!, the same network that launched "Fashion Police" in 2010. In 2011, Rivers and her daughter landed their own reality TV show for WE tv, "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?" which documented the most intimate moments of their lives, including Rivers going in for plastic surgery. That same year, the comedian appeared on the series "Louie" alongside Louis C.K. A no-holds-barred comic who found humor in the most unlikely subjects, retirement was never an option for Rivers, who claimed to think about death "constantly." She told The Daily Beast that she wanted to be cremated and told Melissa, "Sell anything and everything you don't want. Don't feel beholden to my possessions." Rivers, the author of 12 books, also thought about what legacy she wanted to leave her only grandson, Cooper, which she told Grandparents.com was that "success comes through work." Hers really mattered to her. "What pleasure you feel when you’ve kept people happy for an hour and a half. They’ve forgotten their troubles. It’s great. There’s nothing like it in the world," she wrote. "When everybody’s laughing, it’s a party." |
