This question was last yr's jamb. Well, the solution is as follows:
The melting point of ice is 0 degree celsius. In order to melt the ice at -30 degree celsius, u've got to apply a certain amount of heat to increase the temperature to 0 degree celsius. Hence, the qty of heat applied(H1) = mass of ice*specific heat capacity of ice*temperature rise(final - initial,i.e, 0-(-30) = 30 degree celsius) Thus:
H1 = 1*2.1*10^3*30 = 6.3*10^4J.

Again, melting the ice requires heat which is equal to the product of mass of ice and specific latent heat of fusion. Hence, H2 = mL, substituting:

H2 = 1*3.5*10^5 = 3.5*10^5J.

Therefore, total heat required(i.e, H) to melt the ice at -30 degree celsius = H1+H2 = 6.3*10^4 + 3.5*10^5 = 41.3*10^4J. That's the final answer.

lol... Same thought some of my students had when i writing countless number of chemical equations on the board while teaching them chemistry. Honestly, chemical equations and formulae are never crammed. They run in our veins and are part of us that know them very well. As a teacher or student, if u cram them u wil get disappointed when the time they are needed comes. U may differ with me, but that's the truth.
