Google just announced Android Oreo and it packs a handful of new features. Some are at the system level and speed up the system and extend the battery life, while others are features that will change the way users interact with their phone.

A lot of these features should be familiar to iPhone and iPad owners. Normally Apple is the one accused of copying Android, but for Android Oreo, Google lifted a handful of features straight from iOS, while a couple of new functions are hitting Android before iOS.

Notifications



Google cribbed iOS for Android’s new notification scheme. In Android Oreo there will be a little dot in the top-right corner of the app’s icon to represent a notification. This has been a staple in iOS since the first iPhone and third-party Android launchers have long featured the scheme, too.

Google even copied how users interact with the notifications, too. A long press on an icon with a notification badge reveals a pop-up menu that presents the user with several tasks — just like an iOS 3D Touch interaction.

In the end, it’s a win to the user that Google copied this system. These dots have survived numerous iOS revisions for a reason: they work.



New emojis

Both Android Oreo and iOS 11 are getting new emojis because emojis are the future of humanity. And Google completely redesigned their take on emojis for Android Oreo. Gone are the blobs and traditional, round emojis have returned.

Google’s new emojis follow Apple’s move to increase the detail found on the little faces. Yet according to a preview by Apple’s Tim Cook, iOS is about to get emojis that are even more detailed.

This tweet by Apple’s CEO shows emojis with a crazy level of detail. Apple has yet to say when the new characters will hit iOS, but it’s logical to expect them in the general release of iOS 11 and High Sierra.

A smarter copy and paste

Android has supported copy and paste functions from the first release and has often led iOS’s implementation of the user interaction. It’s a critical function, yet the small screen size of phones often means copy and pasting is a clumsy affair. Android Oreo now makes it even easier to copy text and perform an action.

Called Smart Text Selection, when a user highlights, say an address, a link to Maps will be displayed next to the standard actions of copy, cut and paste. If a series of digits that looks like a phone number is highlighted, the phone app will be displayed.

This is sort of like how data detectors work in iOS, but Google’s feature looks to be more comprehensive, and it’s powered by Google’s AI for smarter identification.

Picture-in-picture

Apple added picture-in-picture to the iPad in iOS 9 and Android is now gaining the capability, too. But with Android Oreo, phones can get in on the PiP action, too, which is something missing from the iPhone.

Android Oreo’s PiP mode works as expected. It allows users to minimize a video and let it float on top of the screen while other tasks are performed behind it. This video window can be moved around the screen to best position it.

Right now iOS limits this process to the iPad, though that could change in the future.

Autofill

Android Oreo finally brings the ability to have apps auto-fill user information like user names, passwords and addresses. Password manager apps have long performed some of these functions, but through convoluted means. Apps can now implement the Autofill API so the interaction should be much more seamless.

iOS kind of has a similar function, but it’s mostly reserved for a few apps, like Amazon’s, and it’s not nearly as omnipresent as it is in Safari on the web.

It is worth remembering, for example, that the Galaxy J7 (2016) is listed as the most searched and sold cell phones in India and, so far, we have had no reports of accidents in these models sold in India. The problem is that after the explosions of Note 7, any incident seems to be cause for concern.

KNYSNA – Additional firefighters and SANDF troops have been sent to Knysna, along with the Garden Route, where wildfires are still raging on Thursday morning.Helicopters haven’t been able to access the area due to thick smoke and strong winds.The main hospital in the area is considered safe for now, but emergency services are monitoring the site as there are fires around it.Western Cape Emergency services say strong winds are hampering their work.

Numerous fires and a plantation blaze are raging along the N2.

A farmworker, his wife and son have died in Rheenendal.

Several homes have been gutted and thousands of people are displaced.

Evacuated suburbs include Welbedacht, Nania, Eastford, Green Pastures and Knysna Heights.

An informal settlement was also ablaze late Wednesday night.

The N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay remains closed.

Disaster Management says this is the most destructive fire in a built-up area in the province in recent memory.

The government has initiated steps stop the illegal circulation of images and videos of the late Captain Maxwell Mahama who was wickedly lynched by residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central region.

The gory images and heart-wrenching videos have been circulating on social media in the last few days with outright disrespect to the privacy of the family and the late Captain. Deputy Minister of Communications, George Andah revealed this in an interview with Accra-based Joy Fm where he indicated that some “four URL links have been blocked on Youtube and other social media. However there are a lot of these videos and images and as some are being blocked, new ones are being brought up. “We are working closely with Google, we are working with Facebook and this is something that we were doing proactively from good governance and out of respect for family rights and from being responsible for a ministry.”

The deputy minister further indicated that a concerted effort is needed in this regard to ensure that the senseless circulation of these videos and images stop. “The bereaved family would have to also complain to the Data Protection Commission that their rights are being abused and that would reinforce the steps that we have taken and measures that are being implemented so far. “Our immediate priority now is to stop the circulation of these videos and images and that is something that we initiated about two days ago and the process is still ongoing. As at today, we have escalated it to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to engage the Telecom Companies (Telcos) to put in place measure to stop these images being transferred through their data network” he added. Asked whether there are punitive sanctions for persons who knowingly or unknowingly share these videos, Mr. Andah who is also Member of Parliament for Ewutu Senya West constituency said “there’s this provision in the law that any individual who circulates these images illegally or without the consent of the owner of the image or abuse the rights of individuals can be prosecuted. So it behooves on all of us, those sharing these images to respect the dead and the feelings of the family and stop the sharing.”

Now, the scheme is being released in the United Kingdom. Users can earn 3 points for making a Big search, 1 point per pound spent on the Microsoft Store online. Well, users can earn more points by participating in several quizzes.

According to Microsoft, a single user can earn a maximum of 30 points per day. That’s 10 searches per day if you don’t purchase anything from the Microsoft Store. However, if you also use Edge browser then the point bar increases to 60 points per day.
Now you might be thinking what after earning points? Well, you can redeem the points to get Xbox Gift cards, free movies, Skype Credits, Groove Music passes, etc.
Users need to cross 500 points in a month to reach the second level. Then he/she will be able to score the maximum of 150 points per day which will also open the door to earn more reward points.

So, this is simply Microsoft’s tactics to make Bing stand against Google search. Well, it looks like a good idea to promote the search engine. The answer part is that his new company is launching a whole ecosystem of products that will work together: a 360 camera, an intelligent assistant device for you home, and (of course) a smartphone. That last one runs Android, which is what you’d expect from any new phone maker.

The company he started to make all that is called Essential. Explaining why it existsIn a blog post, Rubin tells a typical founder story: going out for the night with his friend, talking about the technology state and how to get it fix. Funny thing, though, is that one of the problems he sees with the state of tech today involves the Operating System he helped create, Android:

No hard feelings Android has helped bring technology to almost everyone, and it has also helped create a new weird world where we are all forced to fight with the very technology that was assumed to simplify lives. Was this what we had intended? Was this the best we could do?
Rubin’s new phone called The Essential Phone is now thought based on the same operating system we know Android. But it’s presumably safe to assume that he will either try to simplify Android somehow or that it’s just a stopgap until it’s viable for Essential Phone to ship a device running its other system, Ambient OS. Or both — or neither! Rubin’s statement seems to serve both as a mea culpa and as a platform to launch something better to us.



Will the Essential phone or Ambient OS will mean less fighting with technology or Rubin is planning on building something on top of Android or supplanting it, that we don’t know yet Presumably, some of those questions will be answered at the Code conference.

All That we can say is this: Rubin has some core principles his company will come to make the 2billion device Android ecosystem a lot better one.

We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have.
We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated.
Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.
