Sultan condemns killing of Deborah Yakubu

The brutal killing of a young female student has raised a lot of uproar, especially that of the sultanate council of Sokoto and Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president.

The female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, identified as Deborah Yakubu was mobbed and lynched to death by her classmates for alleged blasphemy against the Prophet.

In a statement released by Sa’idu Mohammadu Maccido, the Sokoto State council secretary called for the offenders to be brought to book.

“The Sultanate Council has learnt with dismay the unfortunate incident at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, SSCOE Sokoto that led to the loss of life of a female student of the institution,” Maccido wrote in the statement.

“The Sultanate Council condemns the incident in its totality and has urged the security agencies to bring the perpetrators of the unjustifiable incident to justice.

Report: Current Govt Added More Debt in Two Years Than Nigeria Accumulated in 55 Years

• Decries Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio

•Urges FG to declare fiscal emergency

A new policy brief has warned that Nigeria’s worsening debt profile and weak revenue generation have pushed the country into a dangerous fiscal position, with the current administration accumulating more debt in two years than Nigeria recorded during its first 55 years after independence.

The report, released by the Alliance for Economic Research and Ethics LTD/GTE, a Nigerian policy think tank, argued that the country’s debt crisis has evolved into a governance and revenue emergency, as debt servicing obligations now exceed the federal government’s retained earnings.
>
>
According to the think tank, Nigeria’s public debt rose sharply from N87.38 trillion in June 2023 to N159.28 trillion by the end of 2025, with President Bola Tinubu’s administration accounting for about N65.9 trillion of the increase within its first two years in office.

The organisation in the brief titled: “Nigeria Is Borrowing to Breathe—and the Clock Is Ticking”, noted that Nigeria accumulated only about N12.06 trillion in debt from independence in 1960 up to 2015, meaning the current administration added more than five times that amount in just 24 months.

The report stated that while previous governments also contributed significantly to the country’s rising debt burden, the speed of accumulation under the current administration had intensified concerns over fiscal sustainability.

“President Bola Tinubu’s administration has added a further N65.9 trillion in just two years. To put that in perspective: it took Nigeria’s first 55 years of independence to accumulate N12 trillion in debt. The current administration has added more than five times that amount in 24 months,” it argued.

It recalled that Nigeria briefly became almost debt-free externally after the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo secured an $18 billion Paris Club debt relief package in 2005 and paid $12 billion to extinguish about $30 billion in external obligations.

Nigeria remains fourth largest economy in Africa despite rebasing

July 21, 2025

Nigeria has retained its status as the fourth largest economy in Africa despite a rebasing exercise that expanded the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced that the economy expanded to N372.8 trillion ($243 billion) in 2024, down from N314.02 trillion in the prior year as more sectors in the informal economy were considered in its calculations.

The statistics bureau adopted 2019 as its base year away from 2010 that’s previously reported.

The rebasing exercise covers the period from 2019 to 2023 and reflects changes in the economy’s structure, sectoral contributions, and data sources.

Despite the overhaul, Nigeria fails to reclaim its erstwhile status as the largest economy in Africa.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), South Africa remains the continent’s biggest economy with a GDP of $410.34 billion for a country with little over a quarter of Nigeria’s population.

Following the Southern African nation is Egypt with a GDP of $347 billion while Algeria maintains its third position having $268.9 billion as the size of its economy.

Although Nigeria’s economy grew 30 percent above the projected $188 billion estimate by the IMF this year, the rebasing was poised to place the economy as the biggest in Africa.

Mr franchasng,

Good thread you have here. I understand the title is for clicks, but no Nigerian city is comparable to any city in South Africa, let alone in the US. Let's be honest. I saw open gutters in that video, so there is no way it is like LA or NYC. If e didnt dey, e didnt dey. However, I was surprised by the Facebook video of the estate. Truly, some Igbos couldn't believe such a well-planned estate could be found in the southeast. There should be covered pedestrian walkways across the city, not just estates. I have walked down hidden streets, alleys, industrial, office/commercial and residential areas in the region of Japan where I live, and I have never seen open gutters. Everything is covered to the end. I am yet to understand the concept behind having well tarred roads with open gutters. Donald Duke was one of a kind.

The best way out for the region is by setting up mini-factories throughout the region so we process the raw materials we possess. Afterwards, manage these enterprises properly with well-structured recruitment programs. I say this because when I was preparing for ICAN, I conversed with an Onitsha girl who bemoaned the lack of proper graduate jobs and the "no need for accountants" mentality by the businesses within the state. Today, she works as a banker and lives in Calabar with her husband. Obviously, everyone cannot work in a bank, so businesses should institute proper and well-structured recruitment programs for new grads. Otherwise, every Igbo youth in the region would have to move to Lagos or partly Abuja or even Kano because those are the places where the firms have structured recruitment programs. Even the hotels should have the same standardised recruitment programs. As for tourism, it cannot work in Nigeria as we have a despicable culture where there is a belief that using a woman's undies would make someone rich. The tourism industry is supported by women, and for women to frequently visit a place, they need to feel safe, ditto the indigenous women.

Solar panels are now ubiquitous and cheap (thanks to the Chinese), so electrification should not be a problem. Even the constitution has been amended to reflect the changing trend.

So every raw material found in great abundance in each state should be processed and then exported via Onne Port. The meaningless talk of having a seaport in the southeast should stop, biko. I recall an excerpt in BusinessDay in which a factory in Aba had to transport goods to Lagos ports for export rather than use Onne Port. I couldn't read it because BusinessDay put the article behind a paywall.

I would do my part, not just cho cho cho, and encourage many others to do the same beyond the usual land banking and hotels.
Nice job there about using Onne Port instead of dragging exports AND imports through far away Lagos.

How do you want the mini factories to be established? By governments, or by private companies?

Electricity has not been a problem for the past 11 years when we followed Fashola’s advice to kick out PDP and let Tinubu’s APC messiah Buhari make Jonathan a one term president.

Has Donald Duke’s one of a kind work being sustained and built upon or not? If it has collapsed like his Tinapa and Obudu resorts, then do you think that is because of the misplaced priorities of not employing enough well paid teachers to make education free for all children, despite Obasanjo/ Atiku administration’s UBEC that provides federal funds to help states achieve nine years of free and compulsory education for all children?

It is by far better than Enugu.

500 gallons of water go for N20k. Multiply by 4 in a month, that's N80k. By extrapolation, that's N960k in a year on water alone. Why? Because the governor believes that clean and accessible water is the least of his worries. Yet they prance around like Enugu is Abuja even though the red muddy soil will have residents looking like they went tomb-raiding at night.

But then, considering where it was before Peter Mba, one can understand the accolades being that he moved the town from 16th Century to 17th Century but not anywhere near 20th Century. 21st Century is a stretch. EEDC? The worst of all.

The 2018 Rating by Transparency International placed Nigeria at 148th position out of 180 countries. Nigeria was improving over the years under the previous government, until Buhari got elected as president, things became worse.

There is a difference between fact and fiction. We need to face facts, Buhari is worse than GEJ when it comes to fighting corruption, at least that’s what the facts prove.

Most of us believed there was corruption under Goodluck Jonathan’s Government. I agree with those who did, there was corruption, but not as bad as it is today under Mohammadu Buhari.

In 2012, Nigeria was placed at 139th position, In 2014, Nigeria gained 3 steps and was placed at 136th position. Under Buhari, Nigeria has lost many positions down to 148th.

There’s no further proof needed that corruption has worsened under Buhari’s government compared to previous years.

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has defended the purchase of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for members of the national assembly.

There have been reports that the leadership of the 10th national assembly has bought SUVs for all lawmakers.

Each SUV is said to be valued at N160 million.

The LP had asked members of the party in the national assembly to kick against “wastage”.

While responding to questions during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the former governor of Anambra said the SUVs are not personal cars of the lawmakers, noting that they are for official use.

“Let me start with the issue of Labour Party members in the house. I have actually discussed this issue with them,” Obi said.

“Surprisingly, I can tell you I heard that these vehicles are official cars. They have to use it. It is meant for office.

“So it is not as if it is their vehicle. They said it is official cars and you are meant to use it while you are in the senate.”

Obi also hinted at contesting for the country’s number one position in 2027, adding that Nigeria deserves dedicated and visionary leaders who will lead the country towards a brighter future.

Anambra distributes 177 vehicles to traditional rulers

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, on Monday in Awka, distributed one SUV each to the traditional rulers of the 177 communities in the state.

Obi handed over one of the vehicles’ key to the state Chairman of the Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha.

He said that the gesture was aimed at helping them run and build better communities, adding that the vehicles would also help the traditional rulers to function effectively.

“If you have better communities, you will have a better Anambra, Anambra today is changing for better and I want this sustained,” the governor said.

“In doing that, the state government and the local government will do what it can to support the building of a better Anambra.”

Achebe said that he was overjoyed because the governor cared about the well-being and welfare of the traditional rulers.

“It is completely unprecedented in Anambra and probably elsewhere in Nigeria,” he said.

“It is a mighty gesture from the governor and for the government of the state to make a distinct impact on the well-being of the traditional rulers in the state.”

According to him, it was one of the several measures the present administration in the state had taken to improve the wellbeing of the traditional rulers.

“We pray that God will give us a successor that will continue from where Obi has left and lift Anambra to the next level.”

Nigeria’s ‘Biggest Economic Threat’ Is Unemployment, But Data to Guide Policy Missing for 14 Months

Nigeria’s top economic risk for the 2026 economic year is unemployment but the country has not published any official labour statistics to measure its rate since November 2024, FIJ has found.

On Wednesday, the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report identified lack of economic opportunity and unemployment as Nigeria’s leading threat for the 2026 economic year.

The report also identified inadequate public services, economic downturn, inequality, and crime as the next four threats to economic stability in 2026.

Unemployment is serious enough for international observers but the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has not released Nigeria’s Labour Force statistics, however controversial, since the second quarter of 2024.

SILENCE SINCE METHODOLOGY REDESIGN
The NBS has been in the crossfire before for publishing Labour Force Data late in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, the bureau attributed the delay to an overhaul of its survey methodology.

At the time, NBS said it wanted to align Nigeria’s labour statistics with international best practices and ensure data quality and sustainability.

But the resulting data caused chaos. According to the NFLS published at that time (q1, 2024), only about 4.3% of Nigerians were unemployed. The data introduced new types of labour categorisation in the report.

Per the new method, anyone who works even minimal hours in a week is considered “employed”. The reliability of official figures was questioned by labour unions, business groups and even economists.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), for instance, described the reported employment statistics as unrealistic. Chris Onyeka, the NLC’s National Assistant General Secretary, called the report a “voodoo document” and a “fabrication designed to mislead the public”.

Similarly, Gabriel Idahosa, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said, “The technical improvement in the employment rate is more of a way that employment is now calculated; but the reality is that the economy is not looking like an economy where unemployment is significantly reducing.”

Since then, the NBS has not made any attempt to publish labour data.

The major achievement of Donald Duke, for eight years, is the moribund Calabar festival and the white elephant project called Obudu Ranch, which is of little or no economic contribution to the GDP of Cross River state, instead of channeling the same resources to develop Calabar seaport. It was during the same period that Tinubu used to build Lagos state to become the fifth largest economy in Africa.
What 5th largest economy is that? If it’s not the usual balablu bulaba propaganda lies of the master strategist of a-looter democracy, then why has he failed to deliver the largest economy in Nigeria since 2023?

Instead of doing so, he has wrecked our economy to 4th place in Africa, with his akara empowerment instead of the employment promises made to create 50 million jobs.

What do you think is wrong with the Lagos landlord huh

Those existing roads are already being fixed. The shagamu Ore highway, through Benin to Asaba and Owerri, the Niger bridge etc are all being fixed. A coastal highway opens an alternative road that shortens the journey by about 4 hours, opens up coastal towns for economic activities and tourism. The potentials are enormous.
Are you calling Oshiomhole a propagandist liar huh

Why are these blind critics not condemning Badagry- Sokoto highway?, they only picked the Southern project for easy attacks while leaving out the Northern project. Fear dey catch dem?. Even Atiku no get liver to attack Badagry-Sokoto road.

#ThereIsNoVacancyInAsoRock

-Kiss the truth!
Did Tinubu have any liver to attack his fellow Muslims who killed Deborah?

Did the Jagaban of Borgu have the liver to attack his fellow northern terrorists who killed Pa Fasoranti’s daughter?

How can the master strategist of Muslim-Muslim ticket do that when he betrayed Yoruba people in 2011 to make his fellow northerner HoR Speaker?

When is free education for all children going to spread across Nigeria, 27 years after Obasanjo/ Atiku administration established UBEC to help states with matching federal funds for nine years of free and compulsory education for all children?

How can we have sustainable development without an educated workforce huh

Uncompleted projects, dilapidated classrooms litter Ogun despite N10.2 billion rehabilitation

PREMIUM TIMES visited schools that the state government claimed to have rehabilitated and found decrepit and inadequate facilities.

Governor Dapo Abiodun said last year that over 400 primary and secondary schools have been renovated in Ogun State under his administration.

However, when PREMIUM TIMES late in 2022 toured the three senatorial districts of the state, our reporter found facilities in many public schools still in deplorable conditions.

The renovation project was executed with a N10.2 billion fund jointly contributed, equally, by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the state government.

UBEC released its share of the fund to the state government in 2019 to address infrastructural decay and inadequate facilities in 236 public schools across the state.
