Mintek: Be careful with the bolded portion. Given the prevailing political structure, only a presidential candidate of northern extraction can call a section of the country "irrelevant". What magic d'you think could see a S/Westerner clinch presidency without the support of the SE and SS? The North will rule forever as long as the division down South persists. Bitter truth. The north has ruined the country forever even when southerners were the figurehead leaders- Obasanjo 11 years, Jonathan 5 years and Shonekan few weeks. |

Iran cancelled Friday prayers in Tehran and 22 other provincial capitals for the first time in decades to limit the spread of the new coronavirus disease. It also placed some restrictions on access to major Shia Muslim shrines in Qom, the epicentre of the country's Covid-19 outbreak, and Mashhad. The Iranian health ministry meanwhile warned that the number of cases would continue to rise in the coming days. On Friday, it reported 388 confirmed cases and 34 related deaths. The death toll is by far the highest number outside China. Masoumeh Ebtekar, Iran's vice-president for women's and family affairs and the highest-ranking woman in the Iranian government, became the latest official to be infected on Thursday. One local website reported that Ms Ebtekar had attended a meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and a number of ministers shortly before testing positive.

DennisEche: Yaradua did and not GEJ. Thanks for clearing up the misconception with those who have no clue about their recent history talk less of history of long ago. President offers amnesty to Niger Delta militants 25/06/2009
https://s.france24.com/media/display/8dd15fe8-0ec3-11e9-9d3f-005056bff430/w:1240/p:16x9/090625-yaradua-m.jpg
Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua on Thursday offered militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta an amnesty in a bid to halt attacks on international oil companies.
"I hereby grant amnesty and unconditional pardon to all persons who have directly or indirectly participated in the commission of offences associated with militant activities in the Niger Delta," Yar'Adua said.
He said the "offer of amnesty is open to all militants for a period of 60 days".
The president did not immediately say when exactly the amnesty offer will take effect, but added that "the proclamation shall cease to have effect from 4th October 2009."
Yar'Adua urged the militants, who have waged violent attacks on Nigeria's multi-billion-dollar oil and gas industry since the beginning of 2006, to lay down their arms.
"The offer of amnesty is predicated on the willingness and readiness of the militants to give up all illegal arms in their possession, completely renounce militancy in all its ramifications unconditionally, and depose an undertaking to this effect," he said.
The announcement came shortly after a meeting between Yar'Adua and the National Council of State comprising former heads of state, senate president, speaker (head) of the lower house of parliament, state governors and chief justice of the federation.

chatinent: This single act is promoting terrorism. What of the acts below, were they also promoting terrorism?www.nairaland.com/attachments/10923643_20200107222349_jpeg7d5a2e4b90a1a8d2e51259f0dff08857Buhari faults clampdown on Boko Haram members June 2, 2013
Former Head of State and Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major General Muhammadu Buhari has faulted the federal government’s clampdown on Boko Haram Islamic insurgents.
He accused the government of killing and destroying their houses while the Niger Delta militants were given special treatment by the government. Buhari who spoke on Sunday on a Liberty Radio programme, Guest of the Week monitored in Kaduna also admitted that the road to the registration of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was rough, pointing out that the promoters of the party were well prepared for any hitch that may arise. Buhari who first spoke in Hausa before the English version accused politicians from the Niger Delta region of starting the current in security in the country by recruiting and arming youths of the region in their desperate attempt to retain power as governors.
The former Nigerian leader said that unlike the special treatment given to the Niger Delta militants by the federal government, the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished by government. While accusing President Jonathan of failing from the beginning to address the security situation in the country, Buhari said he has never been in support of the state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa state. According to Buhari “what is responsible for the security situation in the country is caused by the activities of Niger Delta militants. Every Nigerian that is familiar with what is happening knows this. The Niger Delta militants started it all.
“What happened is that the governors of the Niger Delta region at that time wanted to win their elections. So they recruited the youths and gave them guns and bullets and used them against their opponents to win elections by force. “After the elections were over, they asked the boys to return the guns; the boys refused to return the guns. Because of that, the allowance that was being given to the youths by the governors during that time was stopped.
“The youths resorted to kidnapping oil workers and were collecting dollars as ransom. Now a boy of 18 to 20 years was getting about 500 dollars in a week, why will he go to school and spend 20 years to study and then come back and get employed by government to be paid N100,000 a month, that is if he is lucky to get employment.
“So kidnapping becomes very rampant in the South -South and the South -East. They kidnapped people and were collecting money. “How did Boko Haram start? We know that their leader, Mohammed Yusuf started his militant and the police couldn’t control them and the army was invited. He was arrested by soldiers and handed over to the police. “The appropriate thing to do, according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses.
“Because of that, his supporters resorted to what they are doing today. You see in the case of the Niger Delta militants, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua sent an aeroplane to bring them, he sat down with them and discussed with them, they were cajoled, and they were given money and granted amnesty. “They were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north were being killed and their houses were being demolished. They are different issues, what brought this? It is injustice”.

Ladycewhy: Lol, why southerners give these people money beats me. One yeye idiot said the other time that begging was their culture.
Dear Southerners stop giving people who feel they are entitled to your money, let them starve on the streets if they want to or let them follow tomatos lorry back to their various states to continue their begging culture there.
The day I saw a Hausa woman beggar eating food I cannot afford with two meat and pure water is the day I stopped giving these beggars money,to think all her kids were there too hustling and holding people's clothes to beg for money made it even more disgusting. The same way we give them more allocation from the federation account and positions in the federal civil service, agencies and government companies despite using nearly zero points to gain admission into Unity schools and obtain bogus certificates. After 50 years of Independence, the government of the so called disadvantaged regions ought to have done something to address the situation. You cannot continue to spoon-feed a child and expect that same child to grow, mature and be independent. A student from Abia scores 130 in the Federal Commonwealth Entrance exam, yet it's almost impossible to gain admission in the school of his choice, yet another child from Zamfara will score less than 5 and gain same admission seamlessly. How do you encourage such a child that hard work and merit pays?
Look at all the appointments the president has made so far, over 90% from the north. They are telling us they are based on merit. My question is how comes, when it comes to appointment, they are hiding under merit to appoint only their own, but when it comes to exams and admission into Federal institutions, they bring in Federal character. I'm an advocate of merit, hardwork, transparency, objectivity and emperical selection process. That way you encourage everybody to work hard for whatever he/she wants. After all, the Bible says, "he who does not work, let him not eat". It's against natural and spiritual justice and principle to take from those who work and give to those who don't work. That in itself is the root of corruption Nigeria. I support the President's fight against corruption.
I advocate the enthronement of merit and objectivity in our national life. So, Mr. President, if you are serious about your anti-corruption mantra, If you are serious about this your new "merit" policy, let's go back to the basis. Start by eliminating all forms of quota system and federal character in the admission process into Unity schools, Federal universities and recruitment/ employment into all federal civil service, agencies, parastatals and let's see who will be qualified. That's my humble submission. www.nairaland.com/attachments/2578022_iweala_jpeg0858fd35c7757170d8155dae6623e1c2 www.nairaland.com/attachments/9402486_operasnapshot20190516035220www_bbc_com_jpeg27a2e53d0353af1c1d6fdd2d61f7cfc1www.nairaland.com/attachments/10270139_fulaniherdsmen10_pngd8a430cfd4d6d020495da22dbf8c3e49 |

NaijaRoyalty: The Good man Buhari betrayed www.nairaland.com/attachments/8409054_plexwpeditedimage3_jpeg0865997f5e609fcf8ad18db846b87932In October 1983 during an official trip to Kaduna to print his divisional brief for the Chief of Army Staff Conference, Daniel Bamidele heard of rumors about a planned coup against President Shagari. When he returned to Jos he promptly reported to his General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Muhammadu Buhari (who, unknown to Bamidele at that time was in the thick of the plot). A week later, Bamidele found himself on a plane to Lagos, detained by the Directorate of Military Intelligence at Tego Barracks and accused of plotting a coup against Shagari. Fake witnesses were paraded and a mock interrogation contrived, while reports were being made to the NSO (then under Umaru Shinkafi) to mislead the Shagari regime. Meanwhile, the real plot continued underground with the full involvement of the same Military Intelligence group that was interrogating him. Finally, on November 25, 1983, with no credible witness to nail him, and no legal basis to charge him for a one-man conspiracy, Bamidele was released. He returned to Jos, befuddled about what had actually transpired, until on January 1, 1984, his own GOC, Buhari, to whom he had reported the plot, emerged as the new Head of State!
In early 1984, Bamidele's name was listed for retirement. However, when the list got to Buhari for approval, he crossed Bamidele's name out - recognizing that the officer was caught in a complex vortex and web of intrigue. After being saved from retirement at the last minute he got deployed to Jaji as a Directing Staff.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Bamidele#Bamidele's_reporting_of_the_December_31,_1983_Coup_plot_to_Major_General_Muhammadu_Buhari The events that shaped Nigeria began in April 1983, when then-Brigadier General Buhari mobilised troops to close the border with Chad – cutting off food and fuel supplies. When Nigerian authorities – including then-President Shagari – demanded he reopen the border, Buhari refused stating, “My first loyalty is to my troops. I cannot endanger their lives by sending them on a difficult battle to defend their fatherland and then turn round to feed the enemy and supply them with fuel for their tanks.”
Following several successful military advancements in the face of opposition coming from Lagos, Buhari was recognised as a military hero within the ranks of the Nigerian Army.
Buhari’s newfound status reached a head at the end of 1983 just as President Shagari’s regime was crippled by internal weaknesses including a national debt of N13.3 Billion. According to Omoigui, “All of this was compounded by the sheer expense of the Presidential system of government, corruption, import licence abuses and smuggling…”
On December 31st, following allegations that recent Presidential elections were rigged, Shari was overthrown in a coup by senior officers who were taking charge due to the torrent of economic instability and corruption under Shagari’s reign. The announcement was made when Brigadier Sani Abacha marched armoured vehicles to Radio Nigeria to announce the situation. Shortly thereafter, General Buhari was installed as Nigeria’s Head of State.
At the time, Sambo Dasuki was serving as Military Assistant to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-General Wushishi. Many consider Dasuki’s role in Buhari’s appointment instrumental to carrying out a successful coup against Shagari.
There are conflicting reports as to the extent of Buhari’s own involvement in the coup that initially brought him to power. Buhari himself denies any involvement. However, testimony by the Major Daniel Bamidele, conflict’s Buhari’s claim. Apparently, upon hearing rumours of the plot, Bamidele informed Buhari, who subsequently jailed him. According to Bamidele, “I heard of the 1983 coup planning, told my GOC General Buhari who detained me for two weeks in Lagos. Instead of a pat on the back, I received a stab.”

Buhari had been director of supply and services in the early 1970s, military governor of Northeast State at the time it was divided into three states, and federal commissioner for petroleum and mines (1976-78) during the height of the oil boom. At the time of the coup, he was commander of the Third Armored Division in Jos.
