Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has downplayed the cases of kidnapping in Nigeria, saying they were sometimes exaggerated for political effect.
Mr Osinbajo was addressing Nigerians based in New York on Monday when he was confronted with questions about kidnapping, which is a major part of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
“With respect to general kidnapping which we have seen in parts of the country, again, this is not entirely new. In fact, some of the kidnapping stories you read or listen to are simply not true anywhere, some are fuelled by politics,” Mr Osinbajo was reported as saying by the state-run News Agency of Nigeria.
“There are cases of kidnapping, no question at all about that, but some of the more dramatic stories that you hear are simply not true.
“Every report of kidnapping we receive, we try to verify, and at the end of the day you find out that people just tell all sorts of stories,” the vice-president said.

Blindersoff: Is Dangote not someone else's father too? Why must he disrespect him over a true empowerment he did for a whopping 34,000 people when his own daddy couldn't empower one person Dangote is a public figure who enjoys a lot of priviledges as a result, such as this thread. Is that the case of his/your father And how do you know his own father has not empowered anyone with N10,000 dash every now & then? How do you know when you are not a winsh? www.nairaland.com/attachments/9510615_1558556145picsay_jpeg5ea43fec7256fea17598f27af3d05509 |

Dpharisee: What will Tinubu do now, it seems the North is not ready to keep to the unwritten gentlemen agreement for power rotation with the South. This is the reason it's difficult to trust a Fulani man with power and the reason behind their fight against Amotekun, they want to be in control of every aspect of our security and use it to dominate. America is as strong as Somalia without its military and weapons under their control which can be deployed against those whom they think are against their interest, same way Python Dance can be used to crush any part of Nigeria that disagrees with them.
I wish to commend the SE for putting aside their demand for 2023 presidency to support Amotekun, the level of intermarriage between Yoruba and Igbo means that they should be concerned about each other's security for the sake of their children, Uncles, cousins etc across the divide. The earlier Igbos and Yorubas unite for their separate destinies from the slave farm called Niger area, the better for both to progress rapidly in all facets. Collapse of Soviet Union
1. Collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (1989) 2. Détente: Cooperation between Superpowers - During the Cold War President Nixon and Brezhnez conducted SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) conferences and signed a treaty limiting the number of missiles each country can have.
3. USSR and Afghanistan Cooperation/Détente Ends • 1979-1988 • USSR backed the Afghan government; the US backed the Mujahedeen rebels • US boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow • 14,000 Soviet dead; 1+million Afghans –Over 5 million Afghans fled (more than 1/3 of the population) –10-15 million land mines still in Afghanistan –Soviets withdrawal defeated 4. - Soviet economic collapse - Nationalism in Warsaw Pact countries - Tearing down of Berlin Wall - Breakup of the Soviet Union Collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe
5. Nationalism in Warsaw Pact Countries 1. Gorbachev’s pullout from Afghanistan and his policy of Non-Intervention gave rise and momentum to Warsaw Pact nationalism movements. 2. Soviet/Warsaw Pact countries resented Soviet control and wanted to direct their own governments. 6. Tearing Down the Berlin Wall 1. East Germany elected a more moderate Communist government, but many not satisfied; allowed people to leave East Germany 2. November 9, 1989 – the Brandenburg Gate opened and people began tearing down the wall 3. Tearing down Berlin Wall symbolized and helped lead to fall of Communism in Eastern Europe; East Germany & Czechoslovakia 4. Gorbachev and President Reagan given credit for being most responsible for the end of the Cold War
7. Ronald Reagan: U.S. President 1980-88 “Tear down this wall” 8. Brandenburg Gate Fall of the wall news broadcast 9. Soviet Economic Collapse 1. Over-spending on arms race weakened government & economy 2.Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev tried to reform the USSR economy in two plans a. perestroika – restructuring of the Soviet political and economic system - Weakened Russian economy in short-term b.glasnost – “Openness” freed public access to information after decades of heavy government censorship 3. Gorbachev encouraged reform in other 15 Soviet Socialist Republics: new countries 4. Hard-line communists attempted a coup against Gorbachev – failed 5. U.S.S.R. crumbles; Gorbachev = the last leader of the USSR 6.Boris Yeltsin, with support of many who wanted continued reforms, becomes President of Russia Mikhail Gorbachev U.S.S.R. Boris Yeltsin Russia
10. Break Up of Soviet Union 1. Soviet Republics, one-by-one, broke away from Moscow and declared independence. 2. 1989-90: The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) was dead.

toba1909: Sad! Two assassinations in two days within Oyo State. I think its high time the audio governor improves the security outfit to be a joint security patrol we used to have during Ajimobi's administration, instead of the policemen he gave KIA cars to.
May Oko Oloyun soul rest in peace! Sense fall on you there. Were there no assassinations in Oyo state during the reign of impunity by the constipated authority Ajimobi? Why play partisan politics with our security |

DexterousOne: The reason why Nigeria is underdeveloped is two fold
1) Glorification of Mediocrity over Merit
2) Lack of long term thinking by majority of the population, coupled with widespread ignorance, the uneducated, and the miseducated
How do you explain to your kids that more people fought for Naira Marley release than Sowore and Jalingo release?
How will you explain to your kids that Buhari with no certificate, became president over a people who are deluded to thik that they are an educated and sophisticated people
How do you explain to your kids when they are grown, done with college and cannot get jobs because they no get "connection" Or that he cannot aspire to be president because of no other reason than he was born a son of a man (myself) who comes from the "wrong" ethnic group (Igbo) ?
We the educated, exposed and skilled are tired and fed up That is why we are leaving
Last last It's the UAE resident permit I will go and get Then connect a Caribbean country for a second passport
Let Nigeria be ruined and despoiled by the MC Oluomos and Buhari and Mercy and Tacha and Naira Marley etc
A countty that is not serious www.nairaland.com/attachments/4914935_4278451fbimg1474791423517jpeg9837caef6dfcfcf456e0ff25a7f500b5_jpegda5b8f13f42bc1476ffe441b52684b50 |

Gerrard59: From responses here, Nigeria's "lower class" are elated by this development and why should they not be? The contract worker in your bank's branch will never get to give birth or sponsor his wife to do same in the US; the dude doing his ND has resigned his fate about such privilege; the lass who struggles to fend for herself never imagine doing same and lots more in Watt Market, Ladipo, Gboko, Offa etc. They are happy with this development because even when the law was there, they never benefitted. So is it now it has been restricted that they would be worried? Ta! The persons who are worried about this are your upper middle class in Lekki, VI, Maitama, Ikoyi, Ikeja GRA, PH GRA etc. who believe their children lose out of a powerful passport which confer on them unfettered access to some of the world's best institutions at affordable rates and ease of entry at different POE stations globally. It is the middle class families who are in Yaba, Surulere, Ibadan, PH etc. who are worried that since they cannot afford $1M for investor's visa or even that of countries in the Caribbean region ($100K+) citizenship by investment, the citizenship by birth can afford their children (not them as parents) same opportunities as those in Lekki and Co.
However, these elites and upper middle class folks are in the minority or are basically infinitesimal in the scheme of things as the vast majority of Nigerians are poor. Those in the lower strata of the society won't feel concerned for the Ikoyi folks because these Maitama individuals didn't and don't feel concerned for the struggles of persons in my first sentence pass through. Which brings to the reality that Nigeria has to be developed and only the upper/middle class individuals can push for such development. But then, these Yaba, Ewet Housing, Ikoyi folks will simply move to Canada, Mexico, Brazil and other countries that offer citizenship by birth. After all, when the UK stopped post school visa, they moved to Germany and currently Canada.
In summary, the vast vast majority of Nigerians will be ecstatic with this news because it doesn't affect them in anyway let alone negatively. Call it schadenfreude, you won't be wrong. Nicely said in bold. https://www.againstcronycapitalism.org/wp-content/uploads/people-power-cc.png |

midnighter: Perfect. People always brush over the difference between the working, middle and upper-classes in these threads and it makes the whole discussion meaningless.
What exactly are you "staying to develop" when your education, training and general expectation for life as an adult are drastically different from what you are experiencing in reality? Is a teacher or a nurse supposed to be struggling to eat?
So why wont they swarm the airport like locusts Thats what people dont understand. If you want the educated, middle class majority to stay and develop the place, you have to make sure that at the very least, their lives wont be a living hell.
"Work hard kids, study hard...be disciplined...one day you'll be a lawyer....a doctor...and...."
And you wont have running water, constant electricity, decent wages or be able to walk down street without some haggard, disgusting fellow appearing to call himself a "Police officer" (who, by the way, is supposed to be part of that trained middle class) harassing you for N20 and waving his loaded gun.
Does it make sense To anybody...? Please who do you expect to do that for this educated, middle class? Who does it for the educated middle class in the US?Do you if this majority of educated, middle class Nigerians are volunteering time and donating money into the political process to ensure their own space is protected This sense of entitlement without matching sense of responsibilities will worsen our country and make us perpetual underdogs even when we are in the US. www.nairaland.com/attachments/3929046_image_jpeg9f360c5ab7736510df54c882e9dbf188www.nairaland.com/attachments/3937452_fbimg1455225198661_jpeg11aac1d4a66dda821df3f6422c5fd4c4 |
