Education › Re: Black Africans vs African Americans In Academics by anonymous6(f):
HiiiPower: I'm still butt hurt about the basketball game from yesterday. African Americans are arguably superior to us in sports, however, we're superior to them in academics. This isn't a malicious thread but a thread to set the records straight.
Sorry I will be honest I never believed that the Nigerian team will be victorious in the Olympics, I don't get why Nigerians were raving them when you know basketball is a American sport, specifically a african american sport not a international sport. if it was football(soccer) or Race running(ex. kenyans)that America beat us in, then it would be embarrassing but basketball please.

I feel Africans, Asians, Arabs tend to excel in Education then Americans in General based on my experience and observation, even 1st generation, africans, Indians, Arabs fall into that as well. I feel Africans take more importance to academics then sports(exception Football(soccer) or race running competition like the Kenyans) while african americans excel in the NBA, NFL, and other American sports the Academics but that doesn't mean their are no educated African americans.

I feel Nigerians tend to have a "360 effect", when Nigerians need to come together they will when it comes to passing a law against gays or coming together for the olypics, world cup and etc but when it comes to beauty contest, attire, and etc that is when you see this nonsense.

shymmex: Even the name 'gele' sounds Yoruba, and I've seen pictures of 17th century Yoruba women wearing it... Edo women wear beads on their heads - and Igbo women NEVER used to wear head tie back in the day - they probably started wearing it after the white people came...

Just ignore the tribalists who like claiming everything as their own.. undecided undecided
I am late in this discussion right now but to answer your question the word "Gele" is yoruba: http://www.namywedding.com/articles/14-how-to-tie-the-gele-the-back-to-front-method

However from another thread I have heard that each tribe has their own word for the headtie but Gele is the most popular word used to identify it

onila: ITS just like nollywood which is an igbo dominated thing but every Nigerian reps nollywood
Ogbono is a niger delta soup but its eaten by all Nigerians
Nigeria is a country of many tribes. its OK we borrown things from each other
True but the problem with Nollywood is it has become broad including the yoruba film industry, hausa film industry and etc. So it depends on the lnaguage but in general like you said the Nollywood people really know is the english one which is controlled by igbos; majority wise

shymmex: You guys need to stop blowing your own trumpets...

Traditional attire - without being biased, I'll say Yoruba women are the most flamboyant - the rest are just decent as the other women around Africa. I can throw the Edos in there as well with Yoruba women..

Western attire - Zimbabwe women are head and shoulders above Nigerian women...

Stop throwing the best in Africa around, till you meet women from other countries, mate... undecided undecided undecided
True Yoruba women are the best with traditional attire followed by edo's then igbo but when it comes to western attire it depends, I have seen some fashion mistakes from both ends when it comes to dressing.

When it comes to the Gele debate well I think Yoruba's are one of the tribes who brought about its genesis but are not the only tribe. However I dont think(actually a fact to me) Hausa had any imput in it(Gele), only southern Nigerin tribes, but now it has become a Nigerian thing which is a fact, only Nigerians can claim it.

Culture › Re: Interracial Marriages In Nigeria by anonymous6(f): 12:56pm On Aug 03, 2012
sugabelly: @poster: To be perfectly honest, Nigeria is a country where ethnicity and blood are tied to the land. What this means is: You are either Nigerian by blood or you are not. And if you're not Nigerian by blood you can't do anything in Nigeria other than just be a normal every day person. You can't be a traditional ruler, you can't be a politician or hold office. If I'm reading your question correctly, it was your boyfriend/husband who wanted to start a political career. If this is the case, then yes, he probably (and correctly I might add) assumed that your whiteness would be detrimental to his political career. Why? Because politics in Nigeria is inextricably tied to ethnicity and tribe. A politician CANNOT represent an area of the country to which he does not belong. And  belonging or being from an area of the country means ethnically and genetically originating from that area by blood, DNA, and culture. So of course, you can see how you would add an awkward element to the equation.

That and the fact that Nigeria only gained independence from Britain only 49 years ago. Any white people attempting to either take any kind of office or associate themselves directly with any kind of political office in Nigeria would most likely be viewed as veiled neo-colonists at worst and insulting at best.

Interracial marriages exist in Nigeria and are not seriously frowned upon but they are still rare/uncommon. Most Nigerian parents would prefer for their children to marry another Nigerian of the same tribe at best and another Nigerian of a complementary tribe at worst.  This does not mean that interracial couples are harrassed or anything. However, such marriages are not common, and they NEVER exist at high political levels,  ever. It would be political suicide.

I know this is your relationship and it must make you feel sad, but I do hope you now understand the situation a bit better. I am not trying to be harsh, I am just trying to give you an honest answer. If the person you're in a relationship with is a normal person, or even a very successful/wealthy business person then you're good to go. But once you start dating people that are from royal families, heirs to empires, or have political careers, then if I were you, I would not realistically expect the relationship to go anywhere. The realistic expectation would be that such a person would sooner or later marry another Nigerian (usually one that has been carefully selected and specially groomed to the expectations of the family).
You spoke the truth, well said
