Nebeuwa: I hope I am reading this correct, but think you are saying that blacks in the United States have a distinct culture within the American framework?
To a extent but in America most of the culture is racial more then anything else followed by food and music, plus America doesn't have cultures like it is in Asia, Africa and etc. For example White Americans have different music from Black americans/african americans like for example country music and rock and roll tends to be a white american thing and R&B, Hip-hop, Rap, Blues, Gospel music are a african american thing. the samething with soul food is a black american thing. However there are many things black americans and white americans share together more then they are different like nationailty, history on American land, language, clothing attire, westernized view point, even foods(besides soul foods), and etc.

shymmex: Is gele a Yoruba attire?

If it is - that means all the non-yoruba wearing it borrowed it from us..

Interesting. cool
It is but it is not a yoruba thing only though at the same time

Nebeuwa: I was recently arguing with a Nigerian friend of mine, concerning this topic. She believes that African Americans do not have a culture and that it is only a subset of the wider American culture.

At first, I was offended when she made that statement, because I saw that as an attack on half of my identity through my maternal side. I stated by looking at our music, our cuisine and our form of speech, that is an expression of culture.

So do you all think African Americans have a culture or not?
many nigerians think they don't but some do but they feel it is a certain type of American culture like white americans have their own unique american culture. It is how the shiates and sunni's are both muslims but different types of muslims.

Culture › Re: What Is Culture To You? How Do You Define It? by anonymous6(f):
It is your identity to a extent, the customs and traditions, foods, clothing, music, language that you share with another group 75% or 100% of the time. For me even though I was born and raised in America, I have some American mannerism that are inevitable but I understand the language(yoruba), cook the nigerian cuisines, know the history, customs and traditions, listen to the music plus other music(including movies), I wear the clothes in functions like weddings, and etc or sometimes in the house, but since I am in the western world I don't wear that 24/7. Also it can be what community you assimilate to for example even if you are not part of it by heritage(but they are not the majority).

It is basically what a group or community of people practice with each other that are similar in, like Indian culture, Jewish Culture, and etc. Your parents, location, what you assimilate to and etc molds that.

Did you ever stop to think that climate and Sea Level could be the reason that the oldest living "first human" skeletal evidence is "Only" visible in certain parts of the world(Africa) because of such?
