Some youths on Monday booed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome as he made his way to into the venue of the 14th Annual Chief Gani Fawenhimi Lecture, where he was slated as one of the discussants.

The angry youths who blocked Ozekhome from getting in the high table accused him of shielding looters. The venue of the lecture at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos became rowdy when the youths insisted that the SAN would not be allowed into the lecture hall.

The protesters accused Ozekhome of defending personalities like Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, former First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan and Senate President Bukola Saraki among others, who they labeled as corrupt,  contrary to the ideals of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

The development forced the keynote speaker, a former Dean, Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Prof. Demola Popoola to stop his paper for about 20 minutes.

It took the intervention of the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Adesina Ogunlana; and that of Mr Richard Akinola, to shield Ozekhome from the irate youth. Mr Femi Falana SAN, who was also at the event, had to leave the high table where he sat among others to placate the youths and calm them down.

Fawehinmi’s son, Mohammed told the protesting youths that his late father did not believe in violence but rather was very democratic, stressing that the late Fawehinmi would not have approved what they did because Ozekhome was at the event for a purpose.

“This gathering is a democratic gathering and it is a gathering in which security should not  restrict anybody”, he said, adding that he was about nine years old when Ozekhome was working as a counsel in his late father’s chamber.

Youths boo Ozekhome at Gani Fawehinmi lecture

Published January 15, 2018

Oladimeji Ramon

There was a mild drama at the 14th Annual Chief Gani Fawenhimi Lecture in Ikeja, Lagos on Monday, as some youths booed Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), who was one of the discussants.

The youths blocked the path of Ozekhome, who arrived the venue of the lecture at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, at about 1.30pm, insisting that the SAN would not be allowed into the lecture hall.

Ozekhome’s arrival was greeted with a loud chant of disapproval by the youths, who disrupted the lecture which was already underway.

It took the intervention of the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Adesina Ogunlana; and that of Mr. Richard Akinola, to shield Ozekhome from the irate youths.

They accused the SAN of “shielding looters from justice.”

Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who was also at the event, had to also leave the high table where he sat among others to placate the youths and calm them down.

At the time of filing this report, Ozekhome has been led to the high table, sitting among other discussants, including musician, Seun Kuti; Fawehinmi’s son, Mohammed; and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

WotzupNG:
The below video showing a girl proposing to her boyfriend is currently going viral on social media.

The video is going viral not only cos Nigerians hardly see a female propose to a man, but cos the guy being proposed to fled the scene as soon as the girl went on one knee.

It was an highly embarrasing moment for the lady as she took to tears in front of spectators at the Ikeja City Mall where the proposal took place.

Well, below is a picture showing the runaway dude's face cos it was not clear in the video. Notice he has the same shirt and face cap on.

From the picture, it can be seen that he's at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. Could it be that he's about to flee the Country as well?

PoliticsRe: Cattle Colonies: Yoruba Youth Group Rejects FG's Plan by AnotherZik: 5:00pm On Jan 15, 2018
dipoolowoo:
By Modupe Gbadeyanka

A Yoruba Youth socio-cultural group called Igbimo Odo Yoruba has rejected plans by the Federal Government to establish cattle colonies across the country for herdsmen.

Leader of the group, Comrade Olufemi Lawson, in a statement on Monday, emphasised that the position of the Yoruba youth was in reaction to a statement credited to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Audu Ogbeh, that the cattle colonies were to curb increasing cases of clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the country.

Mr Lawson said the youths will vehemently resist any attempt by the Federal Government to introduce the cattle colonies in any part of the Southwest, and other Yoruba speaking parts of the country.

According him, every legitimate means within its reach would be used to fight the government, stressing that creation of the colonies was another attempt to re-colonise Nigerians, particularly the people of the Southern part of the country.

"It is absolutely sad that at this age and time in our history as a people, certain persons will resort to arbitrary use of state power to grab the ancestral lands of our people in order to reward a minute but violent group of herdsmen, who have continually assaulted, molest and violate the right to life of innocent Nigerians across the country without any concrete action to checkmate their excesses by the Federal Government,” Mr Lawson said in the statement made available to Business Post.

The group further said it was alarmed by the 'insensitive' position of the Federal Government, coming at the very moment when several states are counting their losses, particularly of human life, as a result of attacks on innocent farmers, women and young children allegedly by Fulani herdsmen.

“We cannot continue to overlook the humongous disasters that these herdsmen have continued to wreck on our communities, leading to loss of means of livelihood, assault on our women and loss of lives.

“Sadly, all these atrocities have not been enough to attract any concrete action from the federal government, neither have they resulted into the arrest or prosecution of the perpetrators of these crimes and their sponsors.

“What we have witnessed instead is the audacity of these elements to claim responsibility for their crimes and even make media appearances to justify their actions against armless people, who are being maimed endlessly by these gang of herdsmen,” the statement read.

“While we want to specially commend Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for the radical approach of his government towards tackling the menace of these (alleged) Fulani herdsmen in Ekiti State, we wish to seriously warn other Governors of the Southwest that any attempt by them to conspire with the proponents of the 'Cattle Colonies' whose main agenda is to unjustly grab our lands out of our possession, shall be resisted by our generation and generations to come,” the statement stressed.

The group also advised the Federal Government that rather than proposing the establishment of cattle colonies, which is seen as a colonial anti-people land grabbing strategy, government should first take decisive actions by bringing to justice all perpetrators of violence hiding under farmers/herdsmen clashes without further delay.

It also urged the Federal government to stop looking too far in finding a lasting solution to issues of grazing in the country as practicable solutions have already been proffered through various recommendations of the past. Most recent, as contained in the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.

owoicho13:
Prominent leaders from Benue State have told President Muhammadu Buhari that there is no land to allow for the establishment of cattle colonies as being proposed by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh.

They made their position known to the president on Monday after they held a closed door meeting with him in the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Governor Samuel Ortom, who led the delegation and addressed the press after the meeting, said Mr. Ogbeh, “who is a son of the soil has explained that cattle colonies are a combination of several ranches” and is proposing that ten thousand hectares should be provided for that purpose.

“In Benue, we don’t have ten hectares for colonies, other states may have, but we don’t have in Benue State,” he said.

Among those in the delegation are former senate president, David Mark; former governor, George Akume and several others.

Bakare demands democratic revolution, says it’s time to reclaim Nigeria

Senior Pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, on Sunday declared that registering to vote by obtaining a permanent voter card has become a national priority, stressing that the time has come to reclaim Nigeria from persons in position of authority who are opposed to restructuring.

Bakare categorically called out President Muhammadu Buhari, with whom he ran to be vice president in 2011, for rejecting the calls for Nigeria’s restructuring, which he said was the only solution for the discontent in the country.

Nairaland GeneralTCN Commends Enugu Govt Over 30MVA Powerline In Nsukka by AnotherZik(op): 8:17am On Jan 15, 2018
The Enugu State government has been lauded by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, for providing support which led to the securing of right-of-way for the completion of a power project being executed in Nsukka.

The company called on other state governments to emulate the exemplary leadership provided by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The important power line project, that would upon completion boost electricity supply to millions of residents in Enugu North Senatorial District, had been abandoned since 2006 following disputes between the TCN and host communities over right of way.

Addressing journalists at the transmission station in Nsukka, TCN’s Assistant General Manager, Transmission, Enugu sub-station, Bakare Kazim stated that the Ugwuanyi-led administration has set the pace in helping to resolve the issue of transmission access line acquisition which almost stalled the progress of work at the 30MVA injection sub-station in Nsukka.

BusinessNigerian Stocks Named World’s Best Following 12% Rise In 14 Days by AnotherZik(op): 7:19am On Jan 15, 2018
The world-beating rally in Nigerian stocks may not be over yet.

The main equity index in Africa’s biggest economy has surged 12 per cent this year in dollar terms, the most among 96 major bourses tracked by Bloomberg, pushing it to the highest level since 2008. Dangote Cement Plc, controlled by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and the largest company on the bourse, has climbed to a record high.

The advance will probably be sustained thanks to rising prices for oil, Nigeria’s main export, and as investors look to increase their holdings of what remain among the cheapest stocks in Africa, according to the asset management arm of South African lender FirstRand Ltd.

“For investors wanting more exposure to consumers in Africa and Nigeria, in particular, the outlook is good,” said Paul Clark, a money manager in Johannesburg at Ashburton Investments, which owns Nigerian stocks including Seplat Petroleum Development Co. “The banking sector is probably the most attractive at the moment, especially the tier-2 lenders.”

Nigerian stocks are leading the world so far this year. Foreign investors have been crucial in driving the market higher. The New York-based Global X MSCI Nigeria ETF attracted record weekly net inflows through Thursday. That helped to increase the exchange-traded fund’s market capitalization to almost $90 million, double the level in May last year.

PoliticsBuhari’s Refusal To Visit Benue Over Herdsmen Attacks Speaks Volume – PDP by AnotherZik(op): 6:52pm On Jan 14, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday stated that the “refusal” of President Muhammadu Buhari to visit Benue State to condole with the people of the state over horrific killings by herdsmen was indicative of his “insensitivity”.

Benue State had on Thursday carried out a mass burial of about 73 persons killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The next day, seven All Progressives Congress, APC, governors visited Buhari at the Aso Villa calling on him to seek re-election in 2019.

Reacting in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP expressed worry that the President was busy receiving some governors elected on the platform of the APC when tens of people were being buried in Benue State.

The main opposition party told Nigerians to note that no government, in the history of the country, had formulated “a divisive body language” like the APC-controlled Federal Government, saying “citizens painfully bear the brunt”.

Nairaland GeneralDavid Oyedepo Reacts To Herdsmen Attacks: Nigeria Sitting On Keg Of Gun Powder by AnotherZik(op):
Presiding Bishop of Living Faith World Outreach, aka Winners Chapel, David Oyedepo has noted that wantom killings by Fulani herdsmen have made Nigerians endangered citizens, warning that a national crisis is underway if nothing is done to stop the murderous activities of the herders.

Noting that the killer herdsmen are backed by powerful forces, he urged the federal government to halt the nationwide killing spree by Fulani herdsmen to prevent the disintegration of the country.

According to Oyedepo, “how many of the so called herdsmen have been arrested since they have been engaging in their murderous acts?

“they must have the backing of some powerful forces encouraging them to do what they are doing”.

The cleric, who spoke on Sunday in a message entitled “a wake up call to a nation on a state of slumber”, stressed that Nigerians who are victims of the incessant attacks may be forced to take the law in their hands to protect themselves.
