Erstwhile chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Monday accused members of the National Assembly of being in the habit of seeking financial inducement to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

He made this assertion while delivering the 2018 Democracy Day Lecture themed: “Peace Building and Good Governance for Sustainable Development in Nigeria” at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

The professor of Political Science said he has “spoken to quite a number of chief executives who complained of high demand for bribes from members of the National Assembly in the name of so called oversight functions.”

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan says he is ashamed that Nigeria is now being cited as a negative example abroad, pointing out that the Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo recently mocked the poor state of security in Nigeria and the naira’s weakening status.

Jonathan, who spoke on Friday at the inauguration of the first bridge built by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, lamented that things have gone so bad in the country that Nigeria had lost its respect in Africa.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has stated that the outcome of an audit ordered by the federal government into the books of 15 revenue-generating agencies from 2010 to 2015 when Goodluck Jonathan was President showed “a bigger case” than his earlier alarm that just 55 people stole a total of N1.34 trillion of public funds between 2006 and 2013.

The lawmaker representing Borno south senatorial district, Senator Ali Ndume, has declared that he regrets supporting Senator Bukola Saraki to emerge as Senate President.

Newsworth recalls that Ndume, a strong ally of Saraki, was the Senate Leader until he was removed in January 2017. He would later be suspended for six months for not “making due diligence” before filing a petition against the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.

But speaking on a Channels Television programme, Hard Copy, the lawmaker accused Saraki of transforming himself to senators’ president rather than senate president, stressing that the Number Three citizen is targeting those who oppose him.

In what is perhaps the clearest and most tangible explanation yet for President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent medical trips abroad, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has disclosed that the President prefers foreign medicare because there is no confidentiality in doctor-patient relationship in Nigeria.

The best explanation presidential spokesmen, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, could give before now on their principal’s preference for foreign medicare was that it was his right to seek medical treatment wherever he wished.

Buhari on Friday evening flew into Nigeria from his four-day medical trip to the United Kingdom, telling reporters at the airport in Abuja that, “I went for further medical checkup. I am alright”.

While stressing that Buhari’s preference was not an indictment of the nation’s health care system, the minister was categorical that Buhari travels overseas for medicals in order to protect his privacy as the country has remained unable to manage information.

Citing an example with the travail of Yusuf, the only son of Buhari, who was involved in a motorbike crash last year in Abuja, he said it was obvious that the privacy of a patient could easily be compromised in the country.

The Northern Christian Elders Forum, NOCEF, has cried out over the death of the General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev (Dr) Musa Asake, who they said relied on Jesus each time he was insulted or tempted to fight.

The northern Christian elders, in a statement signed on Friday by their public relations officer, Sunday Oibe, said they received news of the demise with shock, even as they described the deceased as an epitome of humility, unassuming and selfless man who is not greedy.

The group stated that Asake “held on to his fate very strongly and his passion for the church in Nigeria, particularly in the North is very wonderful”, stressing that he was a hero who deserves to be celebrated.

Gambia is selling several planes and a fleet of luxury cars bought by former president Yahya Jammeh as it seeks to reduce a mountain of crippling debt contracted during the authoritarian leader’s decades-long rule.

Jammeh, who seized power in a 1994 coup, fled Gambia early last year as West African neighbours were poised for military intervention to topple him after he refused to step down following an election loss to the incumbent president, Adama Barrow.

While most of his people struggled in poverty under one of West Africa’s most oppressive regimes, Jammeh acquired vast wealth, much of which he packed into planes and carried with him into exile in Equatorial Guinea.

However, a fleet of vehicles, including several Rolls-Royces with Jammeh’s name embroidered in their red leather headrests, were left behind on the tarmac.

Cambridge Analytica, the British political consulting firm accused of meddling in Nigeria’s 2015 general elections through mining of data on Facebook, has announced that it would cease most of its operations and file for bankruptcy.

This came amid growing legal and political scrutiny of the company’s business practices and work for Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 and its involvement in the Nigerian and Kenyan presidential campaigns in 2015 and 2017 respectively, among others.

The decision to close shop was made less than two months after Cambridge Analytica and Facebook became embroiled in a data-harvesting scandal that compromised the personal information of up to 87 million people, according to the New York Times.

Revelations about the misuse of data, published in March by The New York Times and The Observer of London, plunged Facebook into crisis and prompted regulators and British and United States lawmakers to open investigations into Cambridge Analytica activities.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday cleared the air on his recent comment on Nigerian youths which drew him widespread criticisms.

The United States, U.S President, Donald Trump has told President Muhammau Buhari that his country will not accept the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

Trump said this while playing host to his Nigerian counterpart at the White House on Monday.

“We have had very serious problems with Christians who are being murdered in Nigeria, we are going to be working on that problem very, very hard because we cannot allow that to happen,” he said.

Leader of Divine Intelligence Ministry, Prophet George Fakolade has prophesied that the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN would take over from President Muhammadu Buhari as President in 2019.

The blogosphere was thrown into frenzy Friday with the circulation of images wherein the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, and a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, were seen discussing and embracing each other at a public function where they recently met.

There have been speculations that the two former governors of Lagos state have not been in good terms with claims in certain quarters that they even belonged to different camps in the APC. The Cross River state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, on Tuesday wept profusely at the state executive council chambers whilst signing the historic 2018 budget of N1.3 trillion into law.

The governor who had asked that the budget be committed to God, broke down in tears as the prayer was being said by Rev. Fr Bob Etta, the Special Adviser on Religious Matters.

Former Lagos governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Tuesday revealed that he would not have become a governor without the impeccable integrity of a prominent Yoruba and Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Speaking yesterday in Lagos during the launch of a book entitled: ‘Telling It As It Is’, an autobiography commemorating the 90th birthday of Adebanjo; Tinubu said he attended the event particularly to eulogise the good virtues of the elder statesman

The former Lagos governor stated that but for the elder statesman, he would not have become Lagos State governor “because some forces within his party, Alliance for Democracy, AD, at that time had set out to replace him as the party’s candidate fraudulently”.

According to him: “If not because of his honesty and integrity, I would not have become the governor of the state. Adebanjo said no to electoral rigging.

“As the acting chairman of the AD, he said direct primary is the answer-that every registered member must participate in our primary – and when the result came, some people tried to manipulate it and altered the result. Adebanjo stood his ground and said as the acting national chairman of the party, the result of the fair and free primary must be upheld, and that was in my favour.

“If he were corrupt, they were ready to pay him. If he were a corrupt national leader, he would have taken money, compromised the result and submit another name.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state on Monday reacted to lists of looters of public treasury released by the federal government, likening President Muhammadu Buhari to a father protecting his armed robber children while calling on security agents to arrest children of his neighbour for stealing meats from their mother’s pot.

The governor, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said Buhari was presiding over the most corrupt government in the history of Nigeria and protecting looters of the country’s commonwealth.

He said the first list of alleged looters released by the government was politically motivated, insisting that the second one was an afterthought that was done to cover the shame of the government because Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day visit to Lagos state has attracted him and the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode flacks over the virtual shutdown of the nation’s economic nerve centre as a result of the visit, and the attendant hardship it has caused residents.

Although the state government had declared Thursday a public holiday for a hitch-free presidential visit, thousands of residents of the state were found stranded as they could not get buses to convey them to their various destinations.

A lot of Lagosians trekked several kilometers in order to get to where they needed to be. Some others complained severely about an astronomical increase in transport fare by up to 100 per cent. At the Alakuko-Tollgate end of the state, fare to Oshodi which ranged between N150 and N250 skyrocketed to N400 as there are very few vehicles plying the route.

For those resorting to commercial tricycle operators, popularly called “Keke Marwa”, the transport fare from Agege to Ikeja was increased from N150 to N300, a 100 per cent increase.

Buhari is in Lagos to among other things chair the 10th Bola Tinubu colloquium in celebration of the APC national leader’s 66th birthday. Also to attend the event holding at the Eko Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev’d Alfred Martins had stated that the visit of Buhari and shutdown of the state by the Governor Ambode-led government was unfortunate, noting that the visit is coming when Christians are supposed to be taking part in Holy Thursday and Good Friday festivities.

Non-teaching staff members of Nigerian universities on Wednesday suspended their strike which had been on since December 4, 2017. The non-teaching staffers have three unions namely: the None Academic Staff Union, NASU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.

National chairman of the Joint Action Committee of the three unions, Samson Ugwuoke, announced the suspension on Wednesday at a press briefing, adding that members of NASU, SSANU and NAAT have been directed to resume on March 15, 2018.

Researchers from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Stanford University have discovered that photos taken at a distance of 12 inches increased nose size by 30 percent for men and 29 percent for women, compared to photographs taken at an infinite camera distance.

They came up with this finding following a recently conducted study, published on Thursday in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery. The research was aimed at determining how using smartphones to take selfies distort people’s face.

The researchers used the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which collects data on people’s body measurements. The information included the facial dimensions of a variety of individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

They then created a mathematical model, which included drawings of an average female and male face, to calculate the distortions when a phone was 12 inches, 5 feet and an infinite distance away. After analyzing the results, it was found that mages taken from five feet away did not distort the nose size.

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, says he is encouraged by the decision of Senate not to confirm his nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari as the substantive chairman of the commission.

This was as the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday told those who want Magu removed as the EFCC acting chairman to perish the thought, asserting that the anti-corruption czar is “going nowhere”.

Multinational oil company, Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, has been accused by the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, MOSOP, of keeping a site in K-Dere community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State where it is dumping waste allegedly toxic to humans.

Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, who disclosed this in Bori, headquarters of Khana LGA, said that samples from the site were sent to a laboratory in the United Kingdom and that the results obtained had confirmed the toxicity of the site.

He alleged that Shell had buried the wastes in the area for many years, noting that intense heat forced the buried substance to become exposed towards the end of 2017 prompting community investigation.

Nsuke revealed that Shell had attempted to cover up the impact, noting that the moves were prevented by local dwellers who insisted on an independent investigation.

The Senator representing Nasarawa West, Abdullahi Adamu, yesterday declared that President Muhammadu Buhari is the person who God has chosen to lead the country, warning those who have problem with this are ungodly and should be wary of God’s wrath.

The Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday, announced the appointment of five new special advisers, among who is the special adviser on Poultry development.

A statement issued in Sokoto by Tambuwal’s media assistant, Malam Imam Imam, said the advisers had been sworn-in, while some Permanent Secretaries were redeployed by the governor.

He gave their names of the special advisers as Umar Bature, Cooperation, and Integration; Ibrahim Al-Mustapha, Infrastructure; Akibu Dalhatu, Public Enlightenment, and Mobilisation; Dr. Rabi’u Alkali, Poultry Development, and Aminu Shagari, Disability Matters.

Tambuwal admonished the new appointees to dedicate themselves to the service of the people.

President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday hosted the Council of State meeting, which is attended among others by former presidents, living former Chief Justices of Nigeria and all the 36 state governors.

One of the images coming out of the meeting shows President Buhari looking away while shaking hands with Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state while the Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha was captured looking on.

A forty-year-old French tourist, Jean Michel has given details of his sexual escapades in West Africa, confessing that he slept with more than 1,400 girls and impregnated over 600 of them within two years.


The tourists disclosed that the women were from six African countries namely Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Togo, Ghana and Guinea.

His confession which was posted in an online news site “Africa24” was translated from French to English by Simon Ateba in Washington, District of Columbia.

Michel said, “Good morning Africa 24, I have a confession to make about the havoc I have wreaked in six African countries, including Cameroon, Togo, Cote D’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana and Guinea. I am not proud of what I have done. These were unfortunate experiences.

“In France where I hail from, I did not have money. I was very poor until one day I played and won lottery. I won 550 thousand euros. It was the largest sum of money I had received in life.

“I did not know what to do, and a friend suggested we travel to Africa. We obtained all the documents, entry visa, and the rest, and our first stop was Ivory Coast.

The Presidency on Wednesday debunked speculations in some quarters that President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, has died.

Newsworth recalls that the first son was on December 26 involved in an accident in Abuja when he, alongside a friend, was racing in the Nigerian capital and he veered off the road in the process. The Presidency said at the time that Yusuf broke a limb and had an injury to the head.

Yusuf Buhari later underwent surgery at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja.

Reacting to the rumoured death on Wednesday, President Buhari’s assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie said, “The evil news making the rounds regarding Yusuf Buhari, son of President Buhari and Aisha Buhari, is fake.

“He is very much alive to their shame.”
