They were yet to possess any land in Canaan at this time. They lived with their father in Shechem which where Jacob settled after leaving his Uncle laban in Haran. They lived good life in Egypt cos God had already elevated their little brother Joseph whom they sold into slavery in Egypt. This generation died along with the the Pharoah of their time before the new Pharoah came along and hated the Israelites for no reason, it was during this time they thought of Going back to Canaan. The Pharoah wouldn't let them go but subjected them instead into Slavery. God prepared Moses to lead them out of Egypt. He eventually did but again wasted another 40 years in the wilderness of Egypt compassing mount Sinai for a period of 40 years. The generation that left Egypt all died in the Wilderness, Moses and Aaron were the only ones that came close to Canaan but neither entered it as they first camped on the hill of Canaan. Moses then led the war over Jericho. The first city they subdued. They shared the land while they still carried on the war to possess the lands led by Joshua after the death of Moses. They crossed over Jordan rivers Tigris and Euphrates into Canaan Proper. Took some part of it, settled with some people instead of killing them as God had instructed. Infact Joshua didn't complete the task and they lived together with the Canaanites for a long time before the time of David. The Philistias from Crete started invading Canaan as well, they Occupied Gaza and seeked to expand further. They engage the Israelites numerous times till David subdued them once and for all by killing Goliath and chased them down to the strips of Gaza. David infact subdued the whole of Canaan and ruled over it king. The problem was that the original inhabitants lived with them. The seven are the Canaanites, Amorites, perizzites, Girgashites, Jebusites, Hittites and Hivites. Canaan extend beyond this cities into parts of Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. David ruled over all of it as it was now known the kingdom of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. So also did king Solomon who fought no single war during his reign and built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem where the whole of Israelites together with the original Canaanites who lived among them worshipped. The Muslims first came to Jerusalem in 636. Guess what they did? They laid a siege to the land till the inhabitants surrendered. Same way ISREAL is laying siege now. Even the Ottoman Empire that eventually ruled before the British took over used war conquest to claim all the lands they were ruling. The British took over from Ottoman after world war by defeating them.
Therefore, you are correct, war was the language in those era and you can’t use that to judge now
