Politics / I Regret Celebrating Apc's Change Promise, But Now I Know It Is Hollow And Empty by AreaNews: 10:32pm On Oct 01, 2018
According to the former vice-president, three years after the "change" initiative was championed, it "has been seen for what it is; a hollow and empty promise devoid of meaning and the incapacity of the promisor to deliver on his promises".

Atiku Abubakar, presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has berated the "promise of change" of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he admitted to initially celebrating when it was championed in 2015.

According to the former Vice-President, three years after the "change" initiative was championed, it "has been seen for what it is; a hollow and empty promise devoid of meaning and the incapacity of the promisor to deliver on his promises".

He stated this in a statement on Monday on Nigeria's 58th Independence Anniversary.

He also aimed a slight shade at President Muhammadu Buhari for his comment that Nigeria's youth are lazy.

"Nigerian youth are not lazy as some have said. They are desirous of working, but there is a dearth of jobs," he said.

Kaduna Govt Declares Free Education For Girls In Public Secondary Schools

The Kaduna state government has declared free education for all female students in public secondary schools in the state.

The state commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, stated this at a press conference in his office.

He said the objective of the policy is to increase the enrolment of young girls into school, giving their strategic role to nation-building.

The commissioner said that a directive has been sent to all the Education zonal offices and secondary schools in the state to immediately commence the implementation of the free education policy.

One of the major policies of the Governor Nasir El-Rufai administration shortly after it came to power is the series of reforms it made in the Kaduna state’s education sector.

This includes the declaration of free education for primary school pupils and recruitment of newly qualified teachers.

It had been only the primary school, pupils enjoying the free education which led to Governor El-Rufai’s decision to include secondary school girls as a way of reducing high illiteracy level in the state, especially among the female folks.

Mr Sani also disclosed that the newly recruited primary school teachers in the state will be paid their outstanding salaries by end of September this year.

In addition to clearing all the backlog of salaries, the Education Commissioner says that the state government has directed that the responsibility of paying salaries and allowances of primary school teachers be transferred from the local government councils to the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to enable teachers to get their salaries in good time.

BREAKING: Police File Charges Against Adeleke- PDP Governorship Candidate

The Nigeria police force has filed charges against a governorship aspirant in the upcoming Osun State election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The charges against the Senator include examination malpractice, aiding and abetting, impersonation, and criminal conspiracy.

The School Principal of Ojo-Aro Community High School, Egbedore Local Government Area, Osun State, and three others are also to be arraigned for what the police describes as conspiracy with the Senator.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, told journalists on Wednesday that investigations revealed that Senator Adeleke and his brother Sikiru Adeleke registered and sat for the National Examination Council Examination (NECO) 2017 as internal candidates, impersonating students of the school at the ages of 57 and 42 years respectively.

The police added that Senator Ademola Adeleke had made a cautionary statement and admitted that he registered for the 2017 NECO examinations as an internal student in the said school but did not sit for the examination.

Moshood explained further that both Senator Ademola Adeleke and his brother Sikiru Adeleke’ s pictures were captured in the school’s photo book of 2017 but no NECO seal was found on their photos, unlike the rest of the students.

Politics / APC Plans To Attack NASS by AreaNews: 8:07pm On Sep 18, 2018
APC plans to attack NASS

ABUJA – The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has denied accusations by the Coalition of United Political Parties CUPP that it planned to attack the National Assembly on resumption from recess.

Yekini Nabena, spokesman of the ruling party said in a statement Tuesday night that ‘such crude practices are rejected templates of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP which the so-called ‘Coalition’ represents and definitely alien to the progressive APC-led administration”.

The Coalition of United Political Parties has alleged that the All Progressives Congress APC led administration plans to “attack” the National Assembly leadership, abuse court processes, among other allegations.

APC however said it considers ‘these new rounds of falsehood by the sponsored “Coalition” as a last-ditch attempt by the outgoing and minority National Assembly leadership of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara to prevent the recovering of the National Assembly and continue a minority-rule in an APC-dominated federal legislature.

“We are in a democracy and are governed by laws. A few cannot hold the legislative arm of government to ransom through their selfish political games.

The National Assembly must be reconvened immediately to attend to crucial and pending legislative business. The majority must be allowed to lead”.

Politics / Nigeria Will Have The World’s Poorest People By 2050 – Report by AreaNews: 7:55pm On Sep 18, 2018
Nigeria will have the world’s poorest people by 2050 – Report

The annual report of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, titled the Goalkeepers report has revealed that Nigeria will have the world’s poorest people by 2050.

According to the website of the foundation, The GoalKeepers Report takes a detailed look at the progress being made around the globe. This year, both the event and the report will focus on youth population growth that will affect future world progress.

The report revealed that while “more than a billion people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty worldwide, extreme poverty is becoming heavily concentrated in sub-Saharan African countries. By 2050, that’s where 86 per cent of the extremely poor people in the world are projected to live.”

It added: “One of the obstacles the continent faces is rapid population growth. Africa as a whole is projected to nearly double in size by 2050, which means that even if the percentage of poor people on the continent is cut in half, the number of poor people stays the same.

By 2050, for example, more than 40 per cent of the extremely poor people in the world will live in just two countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria. Even within these countries, poverty is concentrating in certain areas.”

A graph in the report showed that Nigeria’s population is likely to grow to 429 million by the year 2050, with the 152 million of those people projected to live in poverty.

Other nations that will have a high number of poor people by the year 2050 include Madagascar, Somalia, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, South Sudan, Central African Republic, and Guinea Bissau.

Politics / Only A PDP President Will Unite Nigeria - Goodluck Jonathan by AreaNews: 1:19pm On Sep 16, 2018
Only a PDP President will unite Nigeria - Goodluck Jonathan

According to the former President, Goodluck Jonathan, the ex-Jigawa State governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Alhaji Sule Lamido, is a courageous and experienced leader, capable of uniting the country, if given the mandate next year.

A statement by Lamido’s media aide on the Social Media, Mansur Ahmed, said Jonathan made the comment when members of Sule Lamido National Campaign Council visited him at his Yenagoa residence in Bayelsa State, yesterday.

The former president, who expressed the belief that the next president after President Muhammadu Buhari, will come from the PDP next year, also noted that Nigerians are today more divided than ever and that it required a PDP president to unite it.

“Sule, you are somebody that is highly courageous, zealous, committed and experienced. You can perform wonderfully well, and I believe the next president that will take over from Buhari God willing will be from PDP, and the task for him is to unify the country because Nigeria is now divided more than ever.

“In 2011, it was too difficult for a northern governor to speak about Buhari, but Sule you made a lot of meaningful political statements that really captured the minds of Nigerians and PDP supporters and you really sold the party to the people.

“I am always happy to listen to you, because you know the history of Nigeria’s politics. When I was Vice President and later President, I went round Jigawa State to commission a lot of developmental projects, Jigawa witnessed a lot of wonders under your administration.

“I know you are somebody who believes in the unity and sanctity of one Nigeria and your political history, philosophy and ideology are all about leftist and humanism not capitalist, I wish you well in all your consultations and campaign, “ the former president said.

In his response, Lamido, thanked the former president for the warm reception accorded him and his team.
He said: “I am here to formally inform you that I am running for the presidency in 2019 on the platform of our great party, the PDP.

“I am from the old generation, but I also relate with the new generation. I was a former member of House of Representatives in 1979, but I was also a governor from 2007 to 2015. So I am the bridge between the old and the new generation.

“I have been through a lot of political participation, we must think and see how we can give back to Nigeria even for once, because Nigeria has been there for us. Nigeria has dignified and honored us.

“I know your commitment, because you have a large heart, you have been demonised, blackmailed and called names, but you remain silent, resolute and forging ahead in all your activities.

“I know your commitment, because you have a large heart, you have been demonized, blackmailed and called names, but you remain silent, resolute and forging ahead in all your activities.

“I have gone round 35 states and consulted with the party officials, stakeholders, BoT, NWC and our national leaders, including you. In all my consultations, I admitted that there are challenges in Nigeria, where a brother is killing a brother, fighting each other, in every village a brother is fighting a brother because of APC. But as a giant of Africa and leader of the black race, we must rescue Nigeria, this is why I am offering my myself for that role.”

Politics / Saraki Becoming President, Nigeria’s Breakup, God Told Me - Ayodele by AreaNews: 10:09pm On Sep 15, 2018
2019: Primate Ayodele speaks on what God told him about Saraki becoming president, Nigeria’s breakup

The founder of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has declared that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki will rule Nigeria for just four years.

Ayodele disclosed that God told him that Nigeria will be in order if Saraki becomes President.

Speaking with The Sun, Ayodele also said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will defeat any party only if they stay united.

He said, “Saraki will rule for just four years and put the country in order. I am talking as a prophet of God. I said in 2015 that so many things will happen in Buhari administration and it happened. If PDP puts their house in order; that is what will defeat any party.

“If PDP wants to do well, let them be united, and know what they are doing and do the right thing. I don’t belong to any party.”

He also warned that those defecting from one party to another with corruption cases will end up in jail.

“Most people who are defecting will still land in jail because judgment is coming to all Nigerian leaders. Those who are defecting now are not seeing the consequences ahead of them.

“The forefathers of this nation are not asleep; they want to revenge, we have done a lot of blood sacrifice and that is why things are happening like this.

“It is politics everywhere. They are just doing packaging; nobody is talking about anything that is happening to Nigerians, or how they feel.

“I am not giving any opinion; there is poverty everywhere and because of this, people will vote against their conscience because this is the election of the highest bidder. People will not want to vote for the people they want, but they will vote for a temporal bail out, and that will not settle the case,” he said.

The prophet also warned that true federalism will lead to Nigeria’s breakup.

“True federalism will break Nigeria. Wrong practice of democracy and bloodbath will break the country. It will all start when a shocking referendum will be staged,” he added.

Moshood Olagoke Salvador, to APC, saying what the gathering, comprising a large number of former members of PDP, who also joined Salvador to move into APC, was a wake keep for the “dead” PDP.

Tinubu, who was represented by Senator Anthony Adefuye, while commending Salvador for taken the action to cross over to APC, describing him and his teeming supporters as genuine PDP members joining the APC camp of recent.

“I must commend you for leaving your former party for APC. We allowed the PDP to rule for 16 years, thus, APC will rule for 32 years. And next week, we will deliver Osun to APC. The train of defection started in Abuja and it was based on those that couldn’t get return ticket started making noise because they weren’t sure of returning and they defected to another party. We have the genuine PDP members that are defecting to our party,” he said.

According to the APC national leader, the first among the genuine PDP chieftains to cross over to APC in recent times was the former Governor Godswill Akpabio, who he attested to his near control of political machinery in Akwa-Ibom State, describing Salvador as the backbone of PDP in Lagos.

“We all know that Salvador is the backbone of PDP in Lagos. But he has left PDP for APC. So by tomorrow, the PDP would have disappeared from the state,” Tinubu declared.

Speaking after being handed over his new party, APC flag, Salvador, while expressing his appreciation to the party leadership, declared that with his moving over to APC, Lagos had now become a one-party state.

“I am here to let you know that Lagos is now a one-party state,” the former PDP chieftain declared, adding: “We have only two political parties in Lagos before now but with my defection and other members, it has shown that we now have one political party in the state.”

The former PDP chairman projected, come 2019 polls, APC would in Lagos State gather over 3million votes at the governorship while it scores over 5million at the presidential, saying this feat alone would part of his own contribution to the success of the party.

“The result of the 2015 election indicated that if scores of APC and PDP were added together, it would amount to over 98 per cent while the other parties scores were insignificant.

“My target is to ensure that APC clinch every post. We will ensure that over 3million votes are scored at the gubernatorial election and over 5million votes are for the president. And that will be my contribution for the party.

On the coming Osun governorship poll, Salvador said: “Lagos State is a pacesetter. Any state in the South-West that refuses to follow APC is only wasting their time. There is no other party in South-West than APC. And I expect that in Osun because next week Saturday, the governorship poll will be held, I am appealing to everyone in Osun not to be the backbencher, they should join the progressives.

“They should ensure that they come out en masse and vote for the APC. That is the party that can deliver the dividends of democracy in that state and South-West.”

Speaking at the event, the state chairman of APC, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, described the reception as one for brothers and sisters, who had come to realise that, “we are all progressives and we have to work together.”

The APC chairman said people had come to trust and believe in the party, noting that was as a result of the party having made efforts to turn around the state through the leaders that were blessed with vision.

Balogun described Salvador as someone who had always been a progressive, declaring that the former PDP boss and others decided they wanted to swim with the tide.

He, therefore, assured them they would not work in vain for APC as they would reap their efforts.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Hon. Moshood Salvador’s defection as face-saving, noting that the embattled former chairman had been technically expelled following a vote of no-confidence on him emanating from his presence at a PDP rally where a local government chairman, Niyi Aborishade, was assassinated.

Spokesperson of the party, Mr Taofik Gani, said this in a statement made available to newsmen.

According to the statement, Salvador has only moved out of PDP to APC proactively to avoid his imminent expulsion already concluded, saying he was not a figure that could pose any threat to PDP’s victory, come 2019 elections.

“He has only moved proactively to avoid the imminent expulsion already concluded. He is not a figure that can be any threat to our victory. He did not even emerge as the PDP chairman on merit or as a result of his political clout, rather he enjoyed the benevolence of some leaders of the party in the state, same persons he now malign as ‘undemocratic.’

“His defection will not end with APC, he is ambitious to be a senator or even governor. He said this to many whilst in our party. Our counsel to Hon. Salvador is to get moderately ambitious and less arrogant in decision making. We wish him well,” the party said.

Politics / 2019: INEC Considers Ban Of Smart Phones At Polling Units by AreaNews: 10:53pm On Sep 14, 2018
2019: INEC considers ban of smart phones at polling units

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, on Thursday, said the commission is considering banning the use of mobile phones at polling units.

Mr Yakubu made this known on Friday at an Election Dialogue Series organised by a civil society organisation, YIAGA’s WatchingTheVote, at Sheraton Hotels in Abuja.

He explained that mobile phones would be collected from voters when they collect their ballot papers at the polling stations, to curb vote buying in the country.

”The commission would try and ban the use of some devices that aid vote buying on election day such as mobile phones,” Mr Yakubu said.

The INEC boss explained that those who carry mobile phones along to polling units normally use them to take pictures of the ballot papers as evidence to the vote buyers.

It is all widespread that for those who have smart phones, they go into the voting cubicles with there smart phones, thumbprint the ballot paper, take a picture with the ballot paper, fold it and drop it into the box, and later show it to the person who asked them to vote to see evidence that they have voted for there candidate.

”But I also think that the political parties may be for a shocker because there are also smart guys in Nigeria that would snap and send to others through whatsapp and one ballot paper may be claimed by hundreds of people,” he added

”We are looking at that possibility to tell citizens that have smart phones not to come to polling units on election day with the smart phones.”

Also at the event, Mr Yakubu spoke on the importance of increasing sensitisation and education to enlighten voters on the implication of vote selling and buying.

He spoke on the role of INEC in the Electoral Act that requires it to prosecute electoral offenders, which include vote buying.

”But what about the other agencies that worked with the electoral commission like the security agencies? It is first and foremost about the enforcement. There are laws in the book against vote buying and in any country that the laws are not enforced, then that nation is doomed. It is about enforcement.

”Unfortunately in the Electoral Act, INEC is required to prosecute electoral offenders which include vote buyers; but look at the situation. To successfully prosecute, you have to make arrests. We have no police to make arrests. To successfully prosecute after arrest you have to make investigations; we seem to have no capacity to investigate. How do we then successfully prosecute?

”What we have been doing is to work with the security agencies to see if they can make the arrests, investigate and when the case file is ready, we can work together and prosecute.

”We have done such with some success in one of the state constituency elections we conducted in 2016 in Kano. In a constituency, we successfully prosecuted over 40 electoral offenders, working with the police. It was the highest prosecution held in the history of the commission. Who did we prosecute? The hoodlums in the polling units”.

Mr Yakubu however explained the commission was looking forward to prosecuting offenders who sponsor elections, adding that the commission has over a hundred cases of electoral violations in previous elections.

Similarly, he spoke about the violations that occur before the elections whereby cash electronic transactions were made to buy votes, adding that the commission was looking forward to working with institutions to address the menace.

”We are looking forward to the day when we prosecute their sponsors. If we don’t get them, the problem would still continue to exist. As we speak, we have over 100 case files submitted by the police for violations in previous elections and we are diligently prosecuting the offenders, including officers of the commission. So we are discussing with the security agencies to see what we can do to this respect.

But it is not just about prosecuting electoral offenders on the day of elections, what about the violations that occur before the day of these elections, using electronic cash transfers? That is why we are challenging every national institutions to work with the commission to address this menace.

”Not too long ago we had a meeting with the EFCC, they have the capacity and the legal backing as well to track legal finances and o prosecute violators. And only last week we had a similar meeting with the ICPC as well; so we would continue to work with these agencies.

”We hope in Osun they would also help to deploy to some of the polling units so that open violation that happened in the previous elections would not happen.

”We would continue to do whatever is required of INEC to do. We have done it before in improving the electoral process. We are going to tackle the menace of vote buying and any other menace that would have a bad name to our democracy and electoral process.

”In Osun in the next eight days, we are going to deploy over 16,000 staffs. We have four staff per polling unit that are conducting elections.”

”We hope in Osun they would also help to deploy to some of the polling units so that open violation that happened in the previous elections would not happen.

Politics / 2019: Buhari’s Failures Won’t Stop Him Emerging President, Says Shehu Sani by AreaNews: 1:50pm On Sep 14, 2018
2019: Buhari’s failures won’t stop him emerging president, says Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central, has revealed that the failures of President Muhammadu Buhari and the emergence of more presidential aspirants will not “stop him emerging the next leader of Nigeria.”

Sani said this when he appeared on a political programme on Channels Television on Thursday to discuss the why ruling party, the All Progressives Congress opted for direct primaries to elect its torchbearers in the 2019 election.

When asked about the chances of Buhari in the forthcoming general elections, Senator Sani said: “Well, I never have a doubt that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the election in 2019, because I believe that there are lots of achievements that could be attached to his stewardship in the last three and half years.

We can also see some challenges and some failures on his side. But on a general note, I believe that those who voted him in 2015 still have hope and belief in him that he can lead them to where they want to be.

And for the opposition party, it is a positive development that you have lots of people struggling to lead this country. It is interesting. And the statements, they have been making, there is nothing wrong with it. It is just putting the party on its toes. It will in no way stop the president from emerging the next leader of Nigeria.”

Politics / 2019: Saraki, Atiku, Kwankwaso Disagree Over Presidential Ticket by AreaNews: 9:17am On Sep 11, 2018
The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has set up a committee to liaise with all the presidential aspirants to discuss the possibility of having a consensus candidate.

The BoT also warned its members against campaigning for any of the aspirants in order not to polarise the party.

The BoT Chairman, Walid Jibrin, said these decisions were taken after the meeting of the board, which was held in Abuja on Sunday night.

He also said that the tenure of the current executive had been extended for another five years.

Jibrin, who spoke with journalists on the outcome of the meeting, said, “A committee has been set up to discuss with all presidential aspirants to come up with one of them as a consensus candidate.

“The meeting advised all members to always maintain their honour and integrity as the conscience of the party to remain neutral and never sponsor or lead aspirants to visits and rallies as was done during the last convention.”

On whether the party was showing preferential treatment to old members among the presidential aspirants, he said, “We have warned the party to manage the situation of new defectors to the party well and also consider the role played by old members.”

However, some presidential aspirants of the PDP, including ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, and a former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday disagreed on the presidential ticket of the party in the 2019 elections. At separate fora on Monday, the three of them expressed readiness to go for the primary.

It’s North-Central turn to lead Nigeria – Saraki

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Saraki, during a meeting with the Benue State Working Committee of the PDP in Makurdi, insisted that it was the turn of the North-Central zone to lead the country.

The President of the Senate also stated that his presidential aspiration was driven by an obsession for justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.

Saraki stated, “As a geopolitical zone, we have paid our dues. It is the turn of our zone to lead Nigeria to stability. We have gone through bad times. The nation has become crises-ridden; the killings are uncalled for and the Benue valley is the worst hit. There should be justice to every citizen, regardless of geographical location.

“Democracy entails freedom or rights of the people. Our rights should not be imprisoned.”

According to him, Nigeria needs leaders who are capable of representing all interest groups, and not a section of the country.

“My presidential ambition is a collective decision borne out of a desire to salvage the disunity that we are witnessing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saraki submitted his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to the party in Abuja on Monday.

Saraki said that his antecedents stand him out among the other aspirants.

He said he had had the opportunity of serving as governor and that he is currently serving on the legislative side, stressing that it was important that the country had a president who could bring all parties on board.

We must ensure credible primaries – Senate President

On whether he can step down for a consensus candidate, he said, “I don’t think the consensus thing is the issue before us because we are trying to ensure that there is internal democracy in the system and very credible primaries.

“What is important is that at the end of the day, we have something that is rancour-free. What I can tell you is that we are working together because we are still part of one family.

“I believe at the end of the day, we will have a process that whoever emerges will be supported by all of us. So, there will be no need dividing ourselves.”

Atiku will win PDP ticket – Aide

Also, the spokesman for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Mr Segun Sowunmi, said his principal was confident of emerging the PDP candidate.

Sowunmi told one of our correspondents on the telephone that since the PDP had not micro-zoned the Presidency to the North-Central, Atiku would not step down for anyone.

He said, “The business of zoning is a party matter, and the PDP, to the best of my knowledge, has not micro-zoned its Presidency. It was only zoned to the North.” Having said that, the former Vice-President has evolved beyond the candidacy of a tendency or even a zone.

“He is a pan-Nigeria candidate but we recognise that this country has become extremely divided and it takes a pan-Nigerian, who has a relationship with every part of this country to be able to bring the nation together. This is one of the many reasons he is needed. “

I’m the only aspirant that can defeat Buhari – Kwankwaso

Also, Kwankwaso, who spoke through his Principal Secretary, Binta Spikin, stated that only he could defeat President Muhammadu Buhari and as such would prefer to go for the primary rather than backing down for anybody.

According to Spikin, what is important is for the PDP to present a popular candidate who can beat Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

Reacting to the claim that it was the turn of the North-Central to lead the country, she stated, “No, we don’t agree and I don’t think we should agree. Why? It is because what we are looking at is that person who can deliver votes. And going by the happenings in Nigeria, Senator Kwankwaso is the only person who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari. That is if you are talking about mass followership.

“From whatever direction one is looking at it, the most interesting and obvious fact is, who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari in the next election, and that person is Senator Musa Rabi’u Kwankwaso.”

But asked whether Kwankwaso would reject consensus candidacy in a text message sent to her, Spikin said, “Senator Kwankwaso believes in the law and party supremacy, hence he will be part of anything that will contribute to the overall success of the party.”

But when contacted, the spokesman for a former governor of Kaduna State, who is also a PDP presidential aspirant, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said his principal would not comment on the matter.

Makarfi, a two-term senator, is among eleven other aspirants jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party’s ticket to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

“We will rather not comment on that. There is no comment from us. Thank you,” the spokesman said.
