Politics / Court Asked To Sack Adeleke As Senator, Order Salary Refund by AreaNews: 6:56pm On Apr 26, 2019
Court Asked To Sack Adeleke As Senator, Order Salary Refund

Two persons, Akinwale Olaniyi and Akinjide Monsuru, have filed an application seeking the disqualification of Senator Adeleke Adeleke as the lawmaker representing Osun West Senatorial district.

The claimants lodged the suit on Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

They sought that the court restrains Senator Adeleke from further parading himself as the lawmaker representing Osun West senatorial district in the National Assembly.

The claimants also prayed for an order of the court directing the lawmaker to refund all salaries, allowances, and other emoluments he had received as a senator.

They filed the suit pursuant to Section 65(2)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, and the judgment of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Bwari, delivered on April 2, 2019.

Listed as respondents are Senator Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Nigerian Senate, the Senate President, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

No date has been fixed for mention.

Justice Othman Musa of the FCT High Court had held that Senator Adeleke did not possess the minimum qualification of being educated up to secondary level, as stipulated under Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution.

He added that the results the lawmaker attached to his form CF001, which he submitted to INEC, and used in contesting the governorship election in Osun State, were fake.

Olaniyi and Monsuru had, thereafter, asked the Federal High Court to direct INEC to withdraw the certificate of return issued to the lawmaker as the senator representing Osun West senatorial district.

But Senator Adeleke had challenged the judgment at the Court of Appeal.

Politics / Quality Education Is A Wise Response To Boko Haram Terrorism – President Buhari by AreaNews: 10:10pm On Apr 25, 2019
President Buhari today in Maiduguri, Borno State, praised the efforts of outgoing administration of Governor Kashim Ibrahim Shettima in promoting education as counter strategy to Boko Haram ideology and insurgency.

President Buhari gave the commendation at a ceremony to commission six model schools, out of 40 world class facilities established to provide quality education to mostly children of the poor, and those turned orphans by the 10-year insurgency.

The President said expansion of educational facilities in the state was the best response to Boko Haram’s actions to stifle education, especially that of the girl child.

“This is a wise response to Boko Haram terrorism. Education plays a significant and remedial role in the efforts to provide equal opportunity and achieve a higher standard of living for citizens,” he said.

President Buhari assured Governor Shettima and Borno indigenes that his administration is still focused on recovering the abducted Chibok and Dapchi school girls.

“We will not give up. As a President, Nigerian and parent, I share in the agony of parents whose children have been abducted. We will do all that can be done to reunite them with their families,” he said.

Politics / Citizenship: Keyamo, Sowunmi, Disagree Over Atiku’s Eligibility To Contest Elect by AreaNews: 11:34pm On Apr 14, 2019
The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council, Mr Segun Sowunmi, and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Festus Keyamo, have disagreed on the citizenship of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Both men, who appeared as guests on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, made different remarks about the eligibility of the PDP candidate to contest the presidential election.

They, however, exercised restraint on how they addressed the issue as the matter was already in court.

Sowunmi believes the claims by the APC that Atiku is not a Nigerian are just part of the purported acts of the ruling party to distract the former vice president from reclaiming his mandate.

He insisted that the PDP candidate was one of the citizens of the country, stressing that Nigeria has 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, and Adamawa was one of them.

“Atiku Abubakar has been the former vice president of this country and I think that when this kind of issues come up, you begin to query who exactly and what exactly is the geographical expression of Nigeria,” the PDP member said.

He wondered how such an allegation could emerge when Atiku is the Waziri of Adamawa, adding that he was a top Customs officer for more than 20 years before he retired.

Politics / "New Breeds Of Niger Delta Enemies" by AreaNews: 5:25pm On Apr 13, 2019
We observed with utmost dismay how some Onelga Leaders and Niger Delta Governor’s would antagonize and covet every socio-economic empowerment projects or contracts for their selfish political and economic aggrandizements. Forgetting that, among the cardinal reasons for the Onelga and Rivers state crisis (ecological problem, political emasculation) was a huge “social economic lack”.

It behoves on us therefore, to come out to enlighten our Onelga, Rivers State youths and opinion leaders about the “new breeds of Niger Delta enemies”, which unfortunately are some of the political elites from the region.

What We Want—and Need—from Governor Wike:

— Security of communities and critical Federal Govt. infrastructure through intelligence gathering and sharing with the necessary
— Wealth creation through Job creation and unparalleled corporate social responsibility, which include provision of free health care, schools, community roads in mostly areas where there are total lack of state and federal government presence.

— Ecological safety – by stopping pipeline vandalism, illegal refining, quick clamping of damage pipeline lines and remediation of the environment

River state is economical impoverished by the Governor’s inability to provide critical infrastructure to drive the economy, create jobs for youth and pay salaries.

It is a known fact that Governor Nyesom Wike failed to create jobs and also in educational sector. Rivers people believed and expected so much from him but what we saw the opposite. Enough with the political hype and over ratting of mediocrity. We want more than road construction. We call on them to account of some many abandoned projects.

“Hunger has turned some people to slaves, thugs and hero worshippers. Even the devil knows the danger of hunger and how food can make some people worship the creatures in preference to the creator,”.

Politics / Atiku Abubakar Is Not A Nigerian, APC Tells Tribunal by AreaNews: 7:19pm On Apr 12, 2019
The All Progressive Congress (APC) and the winner of the February 23, 2019 Presidential Election, has filed a motion at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja that the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the poll, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is not a Nigerian and therefore not qualified to have stood for the election.

The Party claimed that the former Vice President is a Cameroonian and not a Nigerian citizen and his petition against President Muhammadu Buhari, its own candidate, should be dismissed for lacking in merit.

In a reply to the petition of Atiku and the PDP praying for their declaration as the lawful winner of the presidential poll, the APC said that the 11.1 million votes recorded in favor of the two petitioners should be voided and considered a waste by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The APC’s reply to the petition, filed by its lead counsel, Lateef Fagbemi faulted the candidacy of Atiku in the election insisting that as a Cameroonian, he ought not to have taken part in the presidential poll of Nigeria in the first instance.

The Party averred that Atiku was born on November 25, 1946, in Jada, Adamawa, in Northern Cameroon and is, therefore, a citizen of Cameroon and not a Nigerian by birth.

Politics / Endless Killings: Reps Give Buhari 48 Hours To Address Nigerians by AreaNews: 5:49pm On Apr 11, 2019
The House of Representatives has given President Muhammadu Buhari 48 hours to address the nation over the spate of killings in the country.

This was part of the resolutions reached by lawmakers in the House when the matter came up during Thursday’s plenary.

They agreed that the President should address them and the nation regarding the attacks on communities in Benue, Zamfara, Kaduna, and other states where many people were killed and several others displaced.

Should the President fail to respond to the request, the lawmakers resolved to conclude with other Nigerians that he and his administration were incapable of permanently curtailing the incessant killing of innocent Nigerians.

They also agreed that the failure to address the nation would mean that the President and his administration have failed in their primary constitutional responsibility of ensuring the security and welfare of the citizens.

The House resolved to constitute an ad-hoc committee to interface with the Presidency regarding the request.

Politics / No State In Nigeria Is Held, Controlled By Boko Haram, Buhari Tells The World by AreaNews: 1:18pm On Apr 06, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari, Saturday boasted that no state in Nigeria is currently under the control of Boko Haram terrorists.

He said that his administration is doing everything possible to win the war against terrorism in Nigeria, noting that he has recaptured all territories held by Boko Haram in 2014 and also liberated thousands of Nigerians held against their will by this dreaded group. Speaking at the world economic forum in Jordan, Buhari opined that the world has changed and urged every nation to be corporative. “Cooperation amongst sovereign nations is no longer a choice. It is an absolute necessity”, he said.

He equally called for social and economic inclusion, noting that they are the root causes of many challenges the world is facing. His words, “In this digital age where physical borders no longer exist to protect even the most secured nations, the only way to overcome predatory and divisionary forces is for all well-meaning nations to work together for the greater good of mankind. “Simply put, cooperation amongst sovereign nations is no longer a choice. It is an absolute necessity. In the last ten years, the world as we knew it has completely changed.

“ We have seen and experienced significant shifts on many fronts. In Technology; Population and Migration; Trade and Geopolitics; Climate change; and many more. “For some nations, these trends have had positive impacts. But of course, we have also seen the negative and destructive outcomes of these trends in other countries. “ It is my view, that no region of the world has felt the full impact of these dramatic shifts and shocks like the Middle East and Africa – North and Sub-Sahara. “On one hand, our region is blessed with a very young, vibrant, enterprising and dynamic population. We also have valuable natural resources that are the envy of many nations.

“These assets and endowments contributed to our region experiencing some of the highest economic growth rates in the world. “ On the other hand however, we have also been hosts to some of the deadliest conflicts in recent history. The deaths, damage and destruction caused by terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda, ISIS and Boko Haram over the last ten years will take decades to repair.By the special grace of God, today, most of these terrorist organizations have been significantly degraded. The world came together to achieve this. Now, we are faced with the task of rebuilding.

“It is at this point that we must ask ourselves how we, as a region, got to this point. The answer, at least in the case of Nigeria, is the lack of social and economic inclusion. As Nigeria celebrated being the largest economy in Africa and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Nigerians were migrating in droves through harsh desert conditions and across treacherous seas to seek what they believe would be a better life in Europe. “Ladies and gentlemen, I strongly believe that the lack of social and economic inclusion was the root cause of many challenges we are experiencing. Today, our population is one hundred and ninety million people. By 2050, it is estimated that we hit three hundred and ninety million making us the third most populous country in the world. This means we must start working now to ensure this population is productively engaged.

“In the last four years, we focused on security while implementing inclusive policies. On the security front, we made significant gains in fighting Boko Haram. We have recaptured all territories held by Boko Haram in 2014. We have liberated thousands of Nigerians held against their will. “Today, I am pleased to say no territory in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is held or controlled by Boko Haram. We are extremely grateful to the many countries that have stood with Nigeria to confront this global scourge and in particular, the Kingdom of Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty, the King. “Furthermore, our economic diversification and social inclusion policies are also yielding positive results. Our country has now returned to the path of growth. We are making gains in the ease of doing business indices. A key driver for growth is the agricultural sector where we aggressively pushed agricultural policies that empowered millions of our rural citizens.
