PoliticsBoko Haram ‘bomber’ Videos Emerge As Islamist Fears Mount by ariy(op): 5:09am On Sep 18, 2011
LAGOS – Videos have emerged purporting to show members of a Nigerian Islamist sect preparing for suicide attacks, including a young man said to be responsible for last month’s bombing of UN headquarters.

The two videos obtained by AFP are said to be from the sect known as Boko Haram and come as concern intensifies over whether it has formed links with outside groups such as Al-Qaeda’s north African branch.

The possibility of such links has led to deep concern among Western nations and mounting pressure on the government in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and its largest oil producer.

General Carter Ham, the head of the US military’s Africa Command, said Wednesday that Al-Qaeda’s north African branch, Shebab militants in Somalia and Boko Haram have expressed a will to “more closely collaborate and synchronise their efforts”.

Boko Haram’s attacks have grown increasingly sophisticated, and it had not been known to target international institutions before the United Nations bombing in Abuja.

A man who identified himself as a spokesman for Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing on the day of the August 26 attack.

The two videos said to be from the group include speeches totalling some 25 minutes from the alleged UN bomber.

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the videos, but they seem to offer a window into a form of Islamist extremism in Nigeria that authorities have so far shown little capability of addressing.

They bear hallmarks of past Boko Haram clips and feature speeches by a man identified as Abubakar Shekau, its suspected leader who went into hiding following a 2009 uprising by the group put down by a military assault.

While the sect was long considered a domestic group targeting symbols of Nigerian authority, the videos also show an international emphasis.

They are mostly in the Hausa language widely spoken in the country’s mainly Muslim north, but also partly in Arabic.

The voice said to be Shekau’s calls the UN headquarters a “forum of all the global evil,” while also offering praise for Osama bin Laden.

The video focusing on the UN bombing, which killed at least 23 people and was among the deadliest targeting the world body, is more than an hour and 15 minutes long.

A soft-spoken, 27-year-old smiling man said to be the UN bomber pleads with his family to understand his actions, and a vague warning is sent out to “Obama and other infidels.”

During much of his time on the video, he holds an AK-47 while two others lean against the wall.

Two gas canisters are on the floor at his feet.

He is rail-thin and wears a striped, polo-style shirt, a turban and what looks to be a suicide vest.

In a phone interview with AFP, a man who claimed to be a spokesman for the sect identified the alleged bomber as Mohammed Abul Barra, a married auto repair worker with a son from the northeastern city of Maiduguri, where the group has carried out most of its attacks.

His name was picked in a draw because a number of others also wanted to carry out the mission, according to the spokesman, who identified himself as Abu Qaqa.

Boko Haram’s supposed foreign links as well as the origin of its backing is controversial in Nigeria – as is whether it was truly behind the UN attack.

Kyari Mohammed, a Nigerian professor who has been closely studying the sect, said some members may have received training from other extremist groups, but he doubted more substantial cooperation had occurred.

“I personally don’t believe there is any serious link,” he said.

Nigeria’s secret police claimed in the days after the UN attack that an Al-Qaeda-linked suspect who recently returned from Somalia named Mamman Nur masterminded the blast. He was declared wanted.

Nur was believed to be third-in-command of Boko Haram when it launched the 2009 uprising.

In one of the videos, reference is also made to an attempted attack on police headquarters in Maiduguri on August 15 and an image is shown of the man said to be the bomber, who was killed by authorities before the explosives detonated.

Photos of the man killed by police taken by journalists bear a resemblance to the person in the video.

The second video shows the “martyr” for an attack at police headquarters in Abuja in June, when at least two people were killed.

The videos refer to the group by a name roughly translated as “People Committed to the Prophet’s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad,” as a previous video has done.

VEXED IN THE CITY: A chat with Boko Haram

By Dayo Elusakin

September 16, 2011 10:38AM
Print print Email email Share Share

Boko Haram: Have you heard? The latest in our bomb attacks - it's coming to a higher institution near you.

Me: Yes, I heard. And, I think you guys need to cool off.

Boko Haram: You infidel! You must tremble at the might of the Boko Haram. We shall teach all of you unbelievers a lesson.

Me: Yes, I've heard about your lessons. It leaves people dead, but will do nothing in achieving what you guys want.

Boko Haram: Wait and see! We must put an end to western education. It is the only problem we have, and it is against Islam.

Me: Maybe I can rationalize that your trepidation is borne of ignorance. But, did you notice that the computer device and Internet you're employing in this chat is the result of western education?

Boko Haram: We are prepared to do whatever it takes to drive the infidels to submission.

Me: Some have suggested that there are political undertones to your actions. And the cry against western education is only a smokescreen.

Boko Haram: We have heard the same thing too. But, we have not been informed of any political inclinations. When that happens, we shall issue a statement. For now, all we know is we are fighting infidels promoting western education.

Me: If Islam is, as you claim, against the practice of western education, how come many devout Muslims are also acquiring western education?

Boko Haram: They have been corrupted. And, that is one of the things we want to stop, the corruption of our people.

Me: There are strong indications that you guys have links to the Al-Qaeda terrorist group.

Boko Haram: We are inspired by what Osama bin Laden stood for, and are also determined to avenge his killing.

Me: I hear Osama bin Laden studied economics and business administration at King Abdulaziz University. Other reports say he may have also earned degrees in civil engineering or public administration at different times.

Boko Haram: We did not know that. We will have to consult with the people we get our directives from. We will get back to you on that?

Me: And, if you discover it was true?

Boko Haram: There will be a directive for us to follow. It is not our concern to bother with that, and it is not your business!

Me: If you were to succeed in your quest to end the acquisition of western education in the country, and drive us back to the Stone Age, do you not think it would bring untold hardships to everyone including the Boko Haram?

Boko Haram: We have not been given permission to think about that. But, we are sure those who direct us will know what to do, and we will issue a statement when that happens.

Me: What if - and that is very likely - you are unsuccessful in your quest to end western education in the country? What happens?

Boko Haram: You infidel! You must doubt the effectiveness of our bombs. We are going to succeed. We have been told so, and we believe it to the death.

Me: But, government says it is now serious about curbing your excesses. New security measures are being taken by the government and private concerns to limit your threat.

Boko Haram: This is Nigeria; we all know anything can happen. All we have to do is see the right people, take care of them, and we can achieve anything.

Me: But, isn't this against your religious beliefs as well - bribing people?

Boko Haram: Since you put it that way, all we can say is we have all been corrupted, se we need to do something about western education.

Me: Since you have all also been corrupted, why not blow yourselves up and rid yourselves of the corruption. Others will see the good it has done to you, and will learn from your example.

Boko Haram: That makes some sense, but we have not been directed to do this. When we are so directed, we will do it.

Me: Do you do anything you have not been directed to do?

Boko Haram: No.

Me: Who are those who make these directions?

Boko Haram: We have not been directed to reveal that.

Me: But, of course. So, after the higher institutions, what next?

Boko Haram: We will be directed and will send e-mails to those concerned.

Me: What happens when those directing you are apprehended, like Osama bin Laden was, and dealt with?

Boko Haram: Then, we will no longer be directed. Some of us like the new iPad, maybe we can get personalized copies.

Me: Ok, then. We'll talk again then. Maybe we can have lunch and discuss global warming. Safe dude.

Boko Haram: Peace.

TV blackout for Super Eagles game

Posted: 2011-09-04 10:40

Nigerian fans will be denied the opportunity of seeing the live transmission of Sunday's decisive 2012 African Nations qualifier against Madagascar due to CAF's broadcast rights deal with French television company Sport5.

The Confederation of African Football bundled the rights to all African Nations Cup qualifying games, with Sport5 securing the exclusive rights.

Nigerian television stations NTA and AIT, which wanted to broadcast the game in the country, were allegedly asked to pay up $750 000 for signals. Both refused, claiming the cost was way too high.

As a consequence, and just like the Ethiopia game in June, Nigerian fans will not get to see the Super Eagles play Madagascar.

Nigeria is not an isolated case, as South Africans are also in danger of missing out on seeing Bafana Bafana play Niger for similar reasons.

Live text update of the game will be available on TeamKickOffNigeria.com

African FA presidents a collective shame
by Thomas Kwenaite 30/08/2011, 14:36

I read a report last week that Uefa Champions League winners Barcelona received 44.5million-euros and losing finalists last year Manchester United brought to Old Trafford a massive 53.5million-euro pay-cheque for their participation in Europe’s premier club competition.

I understand that the money is accrued from television broadcast rights and Uefa shares the loot with their clubs. I found that amazingly educational and certainly a competition that is worth taking part in if you are a club in Europe. It surely inspires clubs to win the league championship in order to qualify.

Naturally, I compared the payout to what is happening in Mother Africa and I am afraid there is simply no comparison. I was not only shocked, but embarrassed as well when I compared Manchester United’s prize money to what African champions TP Mazembe received from the Confederation of African Football.

CAF pay out their club champions a measly US$1.5m and once the continental body has deducted some broadcast fees, the prize money shrinks even further and when a club conducts their expenditure, it leaves them wondering whether it is indeed worth taking part in Pan-African club competitions.

Africa is a vast continent and traveling can take a challenge, with clubs flying to Europe at times and then back into Africa again before reaching their destination for a fixture. And Caf does not even subsidize clubs which means clubs are either left with a huge dent in their pockets or with cap in hand and on bended knees, they crawl to the government for financial aid.

There was a huge outcry from club owners when Caf took over broadcast rights of the club competitions and handed them to a French-based company called Sports Five. The company demands quite a handsome amount of boodle from national broadcasters to secure the rights to the events and yet the quality of the broadcast always leaves an awful lot to be desired.

Now Caf has tightened the screws and have taken all broadcast rights away from football federations and not only owns such rights, but has awarded them to the Sports Five who are now calling the tune when it comes to qualifying matches of the African Nations Cup and Fifa World Cup on the continent.

In other words, the Nigerian Television Authority or Africa Independent Television (AIT) to pay Sports Five frightening figures in dollars if they want to broadcast the match against Madagascar in Antananarivo this weekend. And if they cannot raise the fee demanded by Sports Five, Nigerians in general will have to rely on match reports the next day to read about how the Super Eagles played.

Assuming Sports Five are charging each federation across Africa an equivalent of US$750 000, which is what they allegedly demanded for the Sierra Leone/SA game in Freetown (I confess not to be clued up with figures) but I suspect that comes very close to anything between US$40-m and US$45-m that Sports Five squeeze regularly out of impoverished football federations across the continent.

Fifa pays each federations that have qualified for the World Cup US$3-m to prepare for the tournament. Then they pay the federations an additional US$1-m for every match in the group stages and the figure increases once they reach the knockout stages.

The question is, how much does Caf pay federations to clubs that have qualified for the African Nations Cup. Better still, how much does a country receive in terms of prize money if you win the African Nations Cup tournament? Wait for it …, zilch, because CAF claims you compete for national pride!

When the Togolese national team bus was ambushed by Angolan rebels and two people died, what was Caf’s reponse to the human loss of life? They instead asked what was Togo doing in Congo in the first place, when the Togolese needed our collective sympathy.

I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of presidents of football federations across the continent. They are either weak kneed, plain ignorant or have been indoctrinated into believing they are cursed into spending the rest of their lives trodding the path to their respective government Houses as perpetual beggars!

They are aware that they are being short changed by the confederation leadership who are taking much needed funds out of the country and to a European company, and yet for the last 22 years, they have overwhelmingly retained the same executive committee back into power.

They can all go jump in the Victoria Falls for all I care as long as it can stop them from irritating us by pleading poverty because of their collective naiveté in voting into power a group of people who do not, for a single day care less about their welfare but have sold their milk cow to a European country.

Has any of the so-called learned presidents of football federations across Africa cared to ask Caf president Issa Hayatou exactly who are Sports Five; who are the board of directors of the company and, how is awarding them broadcast rights of Afcon competitions until 2018 going to benefit African federations?

I am pretty sure almost everyone who is in the field of computer security or Forensics are aware of the Anonymous Group.
If not , then just Google about about them , you will be getting loads and loads of information about them.

They are a very powerful team of hackers who work anonymously and are responsible for hacking many big security agensies ( and much much more) across the world.
Whether they are good or bad, that’s upto you to decide on reading about them.smiley

Well now back to the news, they have left a video on YouTube stating that they are going to take down Facebook on November 5 , 2011.
Well there is no doubt about the knowledge and power of Anonymous ( They are really good at their job) , and we can’t even doubt the potential and intelligence of the Facebook team.
Well Who wins the battle is hard to predict.

Till then, have a look at the video anonymous left on youtube and do post your comments stating what you think about this.

33 Corner to the Vijana Stars of Tanzania as Nigeria find under the cosh again but Khamis Ncha's delivery is wayward. Goal kick for Nigeria.
32 The Tanzanians no longer seem overawed. They are now dominating and from a Tanzanian attack, Nigeria break on the counter but Amed Musa is caught offside.
31 The free kick is well dealt with and Nigeria attack swiftly. Harruna's intelligent through ball frees Ehiosun. The forward appears to have been fouled twice in the area but the referee waves away the strong penalty claims by the Nigerians. Nigeria coach, Augustine Eguavoen is hopping mad as he felt that should have been a spot kick.
30 Manjamani Abdul Free Kick - Ajiboye flaps at the free kick and from the ensuing loose ball, Tanzania earn another free kick as Uchechi Daniel hacks down Ulimwengu
29 Lukman Haruna Yellow Card - Yellow card to Lukman Haruna for dissent as the Nigerian skipper protests the free kick
28 Kapombe embarks on a sixty yard run which is cynicallky halted by a foul by Terna, free kick to the Vijana Stars level with the Nigerian penalty area
27 Tanzania almost pinch a goal but Ulimwegu misses the gilt edged opportunity
26 Mungusa Obadiah Free Kick - Free kick to Tanzania in their own half. Mungasa was fouled by Ganiyu Oseni
24 Kaponbe Salum seems to have broken his hand. He is receiving treatment at the byline. Nigeria meanwhile attack again
22 Ahmed Musa is finding plenty of joy on the right hand side, he deftly back heels to an onrushing Terna Suswam as Nigeria attack again, the over lapping full back crosses but the substitute Tanzania keeper is outstanding.
21 Lukman Haruna Free Kick - Nigeria is unrelenting in their attacks. The men in green win a freekick, 25 yards away from the Tanzanian box. Haruna takes it and the effort just whizzes over the bar. another good chance
20 Lukman Haruna Corner - Corner to Nigeria, Lukman Haruna takes it, delightfully and Ehiosun leaps above all in the six yard box. He connects powerfully and accurately enough but the strike shaves the post. Almost a second for Nigeria as the Warri Wolves Man collapses on the turf following the agonizing miss.
19 Throw in to Nigeria on the far side. Terna Suswan delivers
18 Free kick to Tanzania in their own half, taken by Mungusa
16 The substitution will be made shortly. Juma seems to be in very serious pains. He is lying just behind the Tanzanian goal, receiving treatment. The Nigerian lads are all huddled in the center circle having a 'mini meeting'
15 Seems we will be having the first substitution of the game, Self Juma cannot continue as a result of the injury and Jackson William will come on in his place.
13 Its been a happy opening 13 minutes for the Nigerians. Its very hot here, stark contrast from yesterday and both sets of players are using the injury afforded by the injury to Juma. The game has been stopped for a couple of minutes now, keeper still down,
12 Self Juma is down injured. Medics race onto the turf to attend to the stricken keeper.
11 Lukman Haruna Corner - Corner to Nigeria but Haruna's effort from the right is too deep. It rolls away harmlessly for a throw in to the Vijana stars.
9 Lukman Haruna Free Kick - Nigeria earn a free kick of thir own as Aluko is fouled by Mungusa. Lukman Haruna takes the free kick but Juma is quickly off his line to snuff out the danger.
7 Manjamani Abdul Free Kick - Rare moment of respite for the away side. Mnjinate is fouled just inside the Nigerian half. Set piece specialist Manjamani Abdul takes the free kick but its is weak and off target
6 The Tanzanians look shell shocked as the Nigerians continue to dominate. Ahmed Musa, who has been looking lively on the right, suddenly breaks free on the far side, his pace takes him pass Mungusa and the VVV Venlo Man quickly supplies a dangerous cross into the area. This time, Self Juma's handling is exemplary.
5 Ekigho Ehiosun Goal - Goooooooal!!!! And Nigeria break the deadlock. Great cross by Lukman Haruna from the right is met by a powerful header by Ekigho Ehiosun, 1-0 to Nigeria and its now level on aggregate. The stadium erupts in deafening noise!!
4 Sone Aluko Corner - Corner is wasted but Nigeria continue to press
3 Free Kick - Free kick to Nigeria in their own half, Orelesi takes it quickly and Nigeria is quickly on the offensive, great work by Omatsone on the right leads to a corner on the right
2 Manjamani Abdul Free Kick - Tanzania (in Blue and White) with the first real attack but Abdul's free kick is easily saved by Ajiboye
