Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum has suspended the entire management of the state-owned Ramat Polytechnic in Maiduguri, for a period of six months.

Zulum was a student of the Polytechnic from 1986 to 1988.

He bagged National Diploma in Agricultural Engineering before returning to the Polytechnic as rector from 2011 to 2015.

The governor, however, paid a surprise surprise visit to his alma mater and was shocked to see workshops and laboratories were no longer functioning, as the “Polytechnic is dead”.

The governor visited the Polytechnic around 9:00am on Tuesday and found most of the laboratories redundant with some covered by cobwebs and rodents roaming around due to neglect.

After an evaluation of the place, Zulum directed the State’s Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Babagana Mallumbe, to take over the affairs of the school immediately.

“As far as I am concerned, this Polytechnic is dead. Nothing is working. The workshops are not in existence, the mechanical workshop is not working, the agricultural workshop is not working, likewise the entrepreneurship centre is not working.

“The school is facing myriads of problems, ranging from lack of funding and commitment. As former student of this polytechnic, a former rector, I have moral stakes in this polytechnic. Insha’Allah, I will not allow this polytechnic to rot during my era as Governor of Borno State. I will do everything possible within my reach to ensure functionality of this institution insha Allah.

“I have directed the Commissioner of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to take over the affairs for the next six months. The ministry is to ensure that all the workshops and the laboratories are put back to use as soon as possible.

“The entrepreneurship centre should immediately be put back to use as well. When I was at the Polytechnic as rector, the entrepreneurship centre was producing nothing less than 10,000 to 20,000 school desks and chairs every month. We produced hospital beddings,” Zulum said.

The Governor held a closed door meeting with top management staff members of the Polytechnic.

He directed the ministry of water resources to drill two boreholes and carry out a complete water channel network within the polytechnic, which is coming after prior interventions he approved for the Polytechnic in 2019, to reduce problems of water supply.

Seven employees of Kwami and Billiri Local Government Primary Healthcare Departments in Gombe State are currently in police net “for diverting 5,450 Insecticides Treated Nets (ITNs) meant for free distribution in their communities.”

The state government, with support from Global Fund, the Catholic Relief Services and the National Malaria Elimination Programme are sponsors of free distribution of the nets.

The Commissioner for Health in Gombe State, Dr Habu Dahiru, told a news conference in Gombe on Saturday that the suspects were arrested on Sept. 10.

Dahiru said that the ITNs were meant to reduce the burden of malaria in the state, especially amongst the most vulnerable groups – women and children.

He lamented that the nets were “unpatriotically and criminally diverted for personal aggrandisement by these persons’’.

He said: “the arrest of the suspects was made possible by personnel charged with the responsibility of keeping an eye on the process to ensure that the nets do not slip into wrong hands.

“They were tipped by an informant that the nets were loaded in a truck in one of the markets in Gombe with the intent of diverting them.

“Following this development, the police were alerted immediately and the vehicle conveying the nets were impounded.

“Marketers who were to take delivery of the nets were arrested and their co- conspirators were identified as well.’’

Dahiru said that a total of 100 bales of the nets were recovered from Kwami while, nine bales were recovered from Billiri, adding that the nets would be distributed to the targeted persons in the two local government areas.

The commissioner warned against the sale of the nets, stressing that “these nets are for the poor and must get to them free of charge. No-one should pay for them.’’

Dahiru expressed appreciation of the efforts of the police, the Department of State Security, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and members of the public for making the arrest and recovery possible. (NAN)

The Kano State House of Assembly has given Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje 48 hours to remove the Chairman of the State Revenue Board, AbduRazak Salihi, for violating the constitutional provision of the nation and disrespect to the legislative chambers.

The Chairman was said to have refused to disclose the house position of the state revenue collection despite a series of requests by the legislature, but at the same time wrote and submitted the reports to the government through the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Land.

Similarly, the house, through the Speaker, Engr. Hamisu Chidari, frowned at the nonchalant attitude of the chairman who was summoned but lied to them.

The revenue chairman was also said to have connived with the government without the notice of the House to unilaterally reduce ground tenement rates of the Independent Petroleum Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) from N250 to N100 which the house described as a total violation of the nation’s constitution.

In their separate remarks on the floor of the House, the legislative members were furious with what they described as the non performance of the chairman in revenue collection as well as lack of knowledge of what revenue is.

Chidari said the house has agreed to set up an eight-man committee that would investigate why Kano falls from second position in revenue collections after Lagos to now 10th position.

The chairman who was visibly shivering before the House and could not provide enough reasons why he chose to bypass the House on issues of revenue collection in the state including his unilateral reduction of ground tenement rates.

The eight-man committee to investigate the falling revenue collection in the state and illegal actions of the chairman was headed by the House Finance Chairman, Magaji Dahiru Zarewa.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has directed the demolition of shanties in Nkpogu, Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The shanties are believed to be a location where fake bottled water, carbonated drinks and alcoholic drinks are produced.

The Governor, who gave the order during his visit to the area on Sunday, said the state government will acquire the land, which according to him, criminals use for their activities.

Governor Wike told journalists that he had received credible intelligence reports that some criminal networks involved in the production of fake drinks were operating there.

According to him, several persons have been afflicted with deadly diseases after innocently purchasing fake products produced by the miscreants operating from the Nkpogu shanties.

In his words “If you look at the area where we are, it is a criminal hideout and I will not waste time immediately to demolish the area. In fact, this will take place in the
next two days.”

Speaking about the “unhygienic” nature of the environment, he said: “I cannot believe that people can turn the whole Port Harcourt to a cabbage city instead of a Garden City. It is unacceptable to me. Like I have always said no decision you take will be favourable to everybody. But as far as we are concerned, one will take
the right decision and the right thing must be done. We are going to clear all these shanties.”

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has said his government is no longer interested in dialoguing with bandits since they rejected the olive branch given to
them.

“My administration will no longer grant amnesty to bandits as they have failed to embrace the peace initiative earlier extended to them,” the governor said.

Mr Matawalle said he was now backing security agencies to flush out bandits and their collaborators in the state and urged residents tobsupport the exercise.

The governor said the barrage of attacks on bandits by security forces had made them make a fresh overture to the government seeking dialogue.

He said some of the bandits were running out of Zamfara to neighbouring states due to the new security measures introduced by his government.

Mr Matawalle warned politicians against giving any form of support to bandits, stressing that “politicians should fear God and stop buying motorcycles to distribute to people who, in turn, sell to bandits to perpetrate their evil acts.”

He promised his government would prosecute any politician caught in the act.

Recently, the state government said it had cut off food, petroleum products supply and other essential commodities from the reach of the bandits in their various camps.
