Science/TechnologyRe: How my inverter is saving me in this poor power supply and no-fuel situation by Arnod007: 1:05pm On Nov 02, 2016
Really thanks to you all for your contributions, have managed to get a charger of 24v/60A from Mr Frank on Nairaland and have started using it which has improved the battery from just 45min to now 3 hours and I hope the backup time will keep increasing as I continue using it to charge it. It's now obvious that it's the mercury 2.4kva charger that spoilt the battery. Thanks once again

I saw a battery charger of 40ah at konga.com for 30k so don't know if that's enough to charge the battery or if 30ah will be cool as well, Ibec pacific Company will that also Okay?

DMerciful:
Smart charger are quite expensive sometimes may be more expensive than some average cost inverter. My recommendation is to get an Indian brand inverter like sulkam or mopower and also get a dissulphator.

Hello so which type of charger do you suggest I should buy that will charge the battery properly. Mean like how many AH charger?

Thanks

earthrealm:
Op clearly said he is using the mecury flooded battery, i dont think mecury inverter has the algorithm to charge flooded batteries, it doesnt hv a battery selector...just like the old lumimous, old model cyber power and all the other old inverters, you need to buy an inverter that has a battery selector switch, and then select flooded battery.

all those inverters i listed are not designed to properly charge flooded batts, thus the batts will fail prematurely/
i dont think the damage is irreversible at this stage, get a good inverter and equlize the batteries for 12 to 24 hrs...they shud bounce back again.
get a hygrometer and check the specific gravity of the electrolyte, flooded battery isnt for everybody, they require basic knowledge of physics n cghemistry and the willingness to get your hands dirty once in a while
Science/TechnologyRe: How my inverter is saving me in this poor power supply and no-fuel situation by Arnod007:
Please like how much can I get a smart charger, and how many Ah will I need to get the 2400va battery charged which is 2 Nos 220amp of 12v. Also will the charger revive it or I need to take it for maintenance first? So grateful for your response so far. Thanks

DMerciful:
No wonder! Mercury inverter 2400VA charging system is a disaster! do not use this inverter unless you're using solar system. The charging system of this inverter does not charge the batteries properly and will ruin your batteries in the shortest possible time. Get another inverter or a seperate smart charger

Using mercury inverter 2400w and 2 Nos 200amp mercury tubular batteries, hours of NEPA light is up to 12 hours max and 5 hours minimum

Thanks

DMerciful:
Give us more information about ur system. Inverter type and voltage, number of batteries, hours of NEPA light etc

Alright bro thNks

But please is it redeemable since it's a tubular battery or it can't be redeemed?

Thanks

adanny01:
Mercury tubular battery is a flooded (wet) cell battery and is not maintenance free. You shoud find a hydrometer to test the sulphuric acid in it as a first check.

Secondly, get a multimeter and check its voltage after the battery charge is depleted. Then check voltage during charging and when fully charged.

Hello bro,

Please i have used my inverter now for 6 months but just notice some day ago that the battery doesn't last more than 3 hours again, please is it normal and what should be the next step, it's a mercury tubular battery.

Thanks for your response.

If you wont mind i can help you out with a good and functional design

sinorte:
I understand it could be a poor design. That is why I'm seeking opinions. Basically what I want is a 2 bed apartment with kitchen, store, living room, guest toilet and laundry...all on 60*40.

Do you know of anyone that could help with the design.

The quotation is based on the sketch.
PropertiesRe: Is This Quotation Right for 2 Bedroom Apartment? by Arnod007: 9:25am On Mar 05, 2016
I wonder why you will contacted an Engineer to do a design for you, 1st imagine your store the same size as your kitchen and also bigger that your dining, why will you want to open 2 toilet to the sitting room, This design is just so horrible and this is th kind of design you get when you dont want to pay professional, am very sure this was done by a bricklayer..

sinorte:
I got this plot of 60×120 land last year and I need to start developing it in order to avoid omo onile wahala.

I've decided to start by developing just a third, 60×40, of the land because of cash constraint. This decision I've taken against the idea of erecting perimeter fence on the land.

I must admit I'm a novice when it comes to building/properties. So I'd welcome great ideas.

I've contracted an engineer and he sent in this quote and a sketch of what I want to build on this portion of the land. I want the properties gurus to please take a critical look at this two and please offer me advice and directions. I'll also welcome ideas outside this propositions.

Thank you so much and God bless.

ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by Arnod007: 1:58pm On Jan 28, 2016
I think it's the way the inverter was configured, don't think it's well configured to be intelligent enough to read the charging accurately

adanny01:
I get the angle you are coming from.

Dont you think that even before going to the field to start testing you got to do the maths to know if there is a deficiancy in the system. In this case how effective is a 20A charger mated with 2 220Ah battery bank. Not matter the testing, the charger cant produce more than the 20A it is rated which will naturally take a long time to charge fully. If the maths is right at 22hrs that means he needs a full day of charging with public supply at atleast 200vac and 50hz non stop.

You need to ask him if he had had that kind of non stop charge to be able to get that full. If he never had, its not so easy for him to experience that full charge.

Some of what i have said before comes my personal experience with the same inverter. I know how it behaves. For instance, when the inverter has fully charged to the extent it no longer flashes the 4th bar and grid power supply fails for 2 seconds and returns which mean the battery mode has been entered and exited, the 4th bar will start flashing like its charging. Its going to flash like that for another 30mins - 1hr before it shows full charge again. The question is, did the 2 secs discharge (even with no load) of battery replenished by 30mins of charging? I dont think so. What i think is that it reenters floating charge which will keep the inverter charger in that mode for a while.

Secondly, i sometimes usually know when my inverter is charging on floating or bulk. This i know when we have low voltage of around 100vac from grid or when using generator. When using generator i hear the change in generator sound upon putting load on it, i know the charger is in bulk stage but when no load is felt by the generator i know its on float. I use a 1kva stabilizer to charge the system so when we have low voltage in grind and the inverter is in bulk charging, the stabilizer heats up real bad. But when voltage is above 160, it charges well without me knowing the stage.

I have watch the inverter well thats why i feel its the set up that is incapacitated.
ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by Arnod007: 1:50pm On Jan 28, 2016
Thanks for your contribution, actually am using the 2.4kva inverter which I connected the battery in series to give 24volt. I don't think have had a straight light of 10 hours without break and I think maybe the inverter keep charging in floating charging, but it always last long when use and the 4th bar hardly drop, but once there is Nepa it will start charging all over again and when I called the inverter supplier he told me the inverter always reset it's charging to start from the beginning again really don't know how true is that

spinola:
With the Mercury Inverter 2.4kva (24 volt)http://www.mercurydirect.com.ng/mercury-inverter-2-4-kva-user-manual/, the two Mercury Tubular 220amp beauties need to be connected in series to generate the required 24 volts. Since connecting two batteries in series will double the voltage but keep the amperage rating the same, his battery bank will be 220amp. 220Ah÷20A=11hrs
60A charger 220/60 = 3.6hrs
80A charge 2.7hrs
With the Mercury Inverter 1.2kva (12 volt), the two Mercury Tubular 220amp beauties need to be connected in Parallel, because only 12 volts is required. Since connecting two batteries in Parallel will double the amperage rating but keep the voltage same, the battery bank will be 440amp.
440Ah÷20A=22hrs
60A charger 440/60 = 7.3hrs
80A charger 5.5hrs
ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by Arnod007: 11:24am On Jan 27, 2016
I used a new mercury tubular battery 220amp and my inverter is mercury 2.4kva digital, just bought it a week ago and no matter how long have charged still doesn't have the four bars solid, the last bar always flashing

spinola:
The battery bars should reduce as you are using it and they should increase while charging till you have four solid bars with no flashing. What is the make, type and age of the batteries you are using ?

i will like to know if you have used the inverter battery drained completely before?, Did it just die even with the bar still on 4 bars?

Thanks

ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by Arnod007: 8:34am On Jan 24, 2016
Please does your battery bars used to reduce as you are using it or it will just remain in 4 bars.

spinola:
The Mercury 2.4 Inverter is excellent value for money. I have been using it for 6 months and I have had no issues with it. It cost me only N27,000 (2.4 KVA), I use it with two 100 A/H batteries which cost me N 28,000 each and it gives my family light for 12 hours a day. Since I have been using this Inverter we have not turned on our generator for even a second or spent a single kobo on fuel.

The only regret I have is not buying two 200 A/H batteries which would have enabled us to run the Inverter (with fully charged batteries) for 24 hours. You cannot use 100 /AH with 200 /AH batteries, so if I wish to add more batteries to my bank, my only option is to keep buying 100 /AH, which will take up more space.

ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by Arnod007:
Hello friend

I also noticed the issue of charging for a long time and yet the last bar will keep on flashing, I charge mine for almost a day plus and the battery last level still flashing.

Also I noticed that the battery level didn't drop even when we don't have light for Almost a day and with all the use, the battery didn't drop a bar.please did you also noticed this? I used 32" lcd,1 ceiling fan, dstv, and a lighting point or is it that the load is not enough to drop the battery.

And i noticed immediately there is light, the inverter start charging from the last bar

adanny01:
Review continued...

Charging: it seem to be charging fine but i am worried. We usually have good hours of electricity, i am worried the battery will over charge due to the long hrs of charge it may get and whether the inverter has the capacity to drop its charging current when full.

Display: After 4hrs of charging, i came home to find battery bars full from 2bars at time i left and 3 bars of load level flashing. I wonder what caused the load to start flashing when the load i connected is not enough to bring on 1 bar of 4. When i tested in my friends house with his 42" plasma and industrial fan, i had 1bar. Mine is a 32"LED and a small stand fan. When i left home threre was no bar on the load level but now 3 of 4 are flashing for reasons i cant phatom.

Cooling: the fan remains on as long as there is mains supply and when inverter is on. Therefore its possible the fan will be overworked since its now obvious that it will work permanently with or without power supply. The fan needs rest but why didnt mercury design it to rest when not needed?

Changeover: The change over on inverter mode of supply from mains to battery when mains from NEPA is lost isnt very perfect. While mains was on gen and fuel got finished, change was perfect. When i turn off input supply from socket, change is ok too. But once when we lost PHCN supply TV and DSTV decoder tripped of leaving Home theatre on. On another occasion, TV only tripped off and on again but DSTV and Home theatre remained on.

Low voltage cutout: this one is impressive just like the manual says. Our PHCN voltage dropped to 92V but supply remained/charging and didnt cut out to battery. The real down side here is that unlike Luminous the mains cuts out too. The luminous only stops charging at its 100v cut out but continue send out mains no matter how small. I expect mecury to supplying what ever it recieves on inverter off mode and on inverter on mode transfer to battery when voltage drops below 90v.

I have charged up to 12hrs now but charging last bar still flashes.
