From time immemorial, religions of the world have served as the backbone of society, politics, and life in general.

It is very difficult to find an African man who is not religious or who doesn’t have one or two religious affiliations with a religious body.

We have always believed in the power of a greater being who is to be revered. Our ancestors believed in gods transferred from generation to generation. Although all these beliefs and reverence have been morphed into three religions which include Christianity, Islam and traditional religion. At least these are the major three we are familiar with.

Across the world, there are a plethora of religions that have different peculiarities. From alien domination to Star Wars inspired Kung Fu, here are 11 weird religions from across the world.

Nuwaubianism


Nuwaubians believe that white people have been originally created as a race of killers to serve as blacks as a slave army but the plan failed. Followers also believe that women existed for many generations before they created men through genetic manipulation.

Nuwaubianism originated as a Black Muslim group in New York in the 1970s. The group established headquarters in Georgia in 1993, which they have since abandoned. Their founder is currently in prison after he was convicted of money laundering and child molestation charges. Nuwaubianism still endures.

Prince Phillip Movement (PPM)


This one is absolutely crazy, the Yaohnanen region of the Tanna state of Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean believe that the son of an earth spirit travelled far away across the sea to marry a powerful woman, and this man would one day return to the island.

The prince-regent and spouse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is practically a king among these people. After observing how local officials responded and reacted to a visit by Queen Elizabeth, the followers of the movement supposed that this woman’s husband must be the spirit’s son from these legends. PPM followers celebrate the Prince’s birthday on 10 June each year as a full-blown religious festival.

Raelism


Aliens will arrive in Jerusalem in the year 2025. Doubt it, ask realists if you meet one.

Claude Vorilhons, a French race-car driver, started Raelism and derived it from the honorific name given to Vorilhons, by aliens who abducted him before revealing the true origins of mankind.

Claude (or Rael, as he was dubbed) was taken to a distant planet called Elohim by the aforementioned aliens, where he was honoured enough to meet great philosophers and religious thinkers throughout history, including Jesus, Confucius, Buddha and Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism).

Aghori


Followers of this cult carry a kapala, which is a cup made from a skull! These bizarre people will eat anything from rotten food to animal faeces. In order to achieve the highest citadel of enlightenment, the Aghori will perform horrendously crude rituals.

The finality of their rituals is obtained from eating the decaying flesh of a human.

The Aghori or Aghouri is a Hindu cult that is considered to have split off from the Kapalika order in the 14th Century AD. Many Hindus condemn the Aghoris due to their cannibalistic rituals.

The roots of the Aghori date back to ancient times.

Panawave


Heard of electromagnetic waves and doomsday?

Based in Japan, this exceedingly odd group is scared witless by the presence of electromagnetic waves in the modern world, blaming them for climate change, environmental destruction and other worldly ills.

Universe People


This is another alien-inspired religion. This Czech group bases its beliefs on extraterrestrial communications with founder Ivo Benda from 1997 onward.

According to Benda, aliens have a fleet of ships orbiting the Earth at any given time, led by a being named Ashtar who watches the people of the Earth, ready to transport good and loyal followers to another dimension.

The Church Of All Worlds


Followers of this religion are called waterkin and their head goes by the title primate.

The Church of All Worlds was set up in 1962 by Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and his wife, Morning Glory ). Taking its name from Robert Heinlein’s Strange in a Strange Land, followers worship the Earth itself in the form of Gaea, as well as assorted gods from a range of other religious pantheons (mostly Ancient Greece).

Jediism

The Creativity Movement is an organization that advocates ‘Creativity’. The use of the term creator does not refer to a deity, but rather to the followers themselves. The movement is atheistic hence there is no mention of deities and churches. It was founded by Ben Klassen in early 1973. After Klassen’s death, ‘Creativity’ almost died out as a religion until the New Church of the Creator was established three years later.

The Bullet Baba’s Motorbike


This is the only spiritual movement in the world that worships a vehicle. Villagers of Chotila in Rajasthan have erected a shrine for the motorcycle and its dead owner Om Banna, on National Highway-65.

This unusual shrine has a Royal Enfield 350 cc motorcycle as its deity along with the photo of Om Banna, popular as Bullet Baba, who died in a road accident at this very spot.

Wonder why they worship the motorbike? The day after the motorbike was taken into police custody, the vehicle reappeared at the crash site.

Church Of Euthanasia


“Save the planet! Kill yourself.”

The group does not condone murder, they do promote their only commandment – “Thou shalt not procreate” – encouraging believers and others to engage in suicide, abortion and non-procreative sexual acts.

Yes, Our very own Sambisa Forest located in Bornu State, northeast Nigeria. T’Challa’s first piece of action started with his ex-girlfriend Nakia’s rescue along with Kidnapped Chibok girls in Sambisa. Yes, when Okoye, leader of the Dora Milaje stepped in, she told the girls to “tell no one of this day.” Lupita Nyong’o actually learnt to speak Hausa for certain scenes in the movie.


2. Benin Artifacts

That is Micheal B Jordan standing in front of the artifacts which include Bronze Heads of the Benin Kingdom.


3. Mgbedike



The Killmonger mask is also closely related to Igbo Mbedike mask which embodies a wilderness spirit that is aggressive, brash, powerful, and stubborn.


4. Acknowledging Ancestors


Ancestral worship was a strong theme throughout the movie. You cannot separate any tribe in Africa from their ancestors because we believe they are always watching over us.


5. Africa Inspired Costume


Lupita Nyong’o’s character Nakia dazzled us with Ankara dresses. The Masai Shuka was also prominent in the movie. You cannot help but notice Angela Basset’s character as Queen Mother Ramonda wearing Zulu Isicolo, the famous hat traditionally worn by married women in South Africa.


6. Nsidibi


Text inscribed on the walls in T’Challa’s throne room is drawn from the Nsidibi, ancient secret symbols that is indigenous to Cross River, Calabar.


7. Slave trade


Micheal B Jordan’s character N'Jadaka asks T’challa to bury him in the ocean after he was defeated because he is brave enough to realize he cannot live in bondage like Africans who opted to jump into the water after they were captured during the slave trade.


8. T’Challa’s sister’s braids



T'Challa's 16-year-old sister’s braids are just too familiar.



9. T’Challa Guinea Brocade dress


Yes we saw T’Challa in our own Guniea Brocade, you cannot help but fall in love with the design right?


10. Herbs


And how do you depict a vision of Afrofuturism without herbs? We have been taking herbs for centuries and we will continue to take herbs as long as Africa remains. T’Challa had a taste of bitter herbs four times in the movie. Well, the herbs might not be bitter at all.


11. Dora Milaje Benin women warriors


Dora Milaje reminds us of the Dahomey Amazons or Mino. These The all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the present-day Republic of Benin lasted till the end of the 19th century. Mino means “our mother’s” in Fon.
