Facts emerged tonight why Anambra State governor from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2003, Dr Chinwoke Mbadinuju, was stopped from having a second term in office.

Fielding questions on a programme, The Candidates, on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar illustrated his passion and determination to give education to Nigerian children with an incident that happened when he was vice president in the country.

He said, “When I was vice president, I took a tour to Anambra State during the administration of Governor Mbadinuju. I found that the public schools were closed for two years. I came back and met the President. I said Mr President, this governor will never be allowed to go back. He said why. I said I found all the public schools in Anambra State overtaken by weeds. “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings and not before officials of low rank.”

This Bible passage must have been talking about the likes of Nigeria’s celebrated crime fighter, AIG Frederick Taiwo Lakanu, whose name has been sent to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for elevation as a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) to serve in the management team of the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu.

Lakanu, who was Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of operations and now the Force Secretary, has received recognitions from government circles and accolades from Nigerians for his skills in policing and contributions to building a safe and secure society.

While leaving Imo, where he served as Commissioner of Police, the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha described Lakanu as the long-awaited divine messenger sent by providence to rid the state of criminals.

For his accomplishments, including the killing of a dreaded armed robber and kidnapper known as Vampire in a joint operation with the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Okorocha also described Lakanu as an exemplary officer who came to the state and worked in collaboration with the people to achieve huge success in the area of security.

Then, the governor did something unprecedented in appreciation of the feat achieved by this celebrated crime fighter in Imo State. He named a road behind the police headquarters in Owerri after Lakanu. He also added a gift of choice land at Shell-camp worth N25 million.

Lakanu, who has been honoured as a warrior in his home state with the title of Akogun of Lagos State, received additional honour from the people of Imo State as the Onwa Na Etiri Oha (the moon that shines).

Travel / A Taste Of Asia: Nigerian Woman Finally Slays The Earth Dragon by Atandakk: 9:46am On Jan 26, 2019
NewsmakersNG

After travelling over 6824 miles from New York across oceans and mountains in pursuit of an adolescent dream in China, Nigerian-born Jazzy Jess had to withstand danger, fear and great difficulties to get to the top of the Great Wall of China and slay the Earth Dragon as the locals once called it. She knows just what to do when you have your back against the wall. Stick-to-it. Her experience, a lesson in perseverance, shows that victory becomes the story when difficult moments are met with courage and determination. She shares her success story with NewsmakersNG:

As far back as I could remember, one of my greatest goals in life was to travel the entire world. But as an elementary school student from an average family in Lagos, I never thought it could happen.

It all started when my uncle returned from studying in London and I sneaked into his books. I saw a big colorful book on world history that sparked my interest and curiosity. I saw Rome, Egypt, Greece, Istanbul, Persia, Paris, Prague, Pisa, Venice, China, New York, London, and their major National Monuments and I wanted to see all of those places in that book. I am a bookworm who loves history and geography.

Many years later, I made a commitment to conquer my fears and grab my dreams while I was young. I did not want to wait until I won the lotto or I retired with a pension, to see the world. I wanted to climb to the top of mountains, scuba dive oceans in Australia, visit the Taj Mahal, see the great pyramid, and bungee-jump now.
I had read a book about ancient China and was intrigued about its culture and customs. I read about the dynasties, emperors, great wall, the forbidden city, food, people, trade, marital and social orders in ancient China and hungered to see some of it one day. No one wanted to go so I travelled alone. I called this first grand trip “a little taste of Asia” and it involved travelling solo through three countries (China, Japan and South Korea) and nine cities but I did not know anyone or the languages, so I was very nervous. The highlight of this trip was to get to the top of the wall of China.

The Great Wall of China is a system of many walls built over 2,000 years ago (since the 8th century BC). There are over 10 popular sections of the great wall and I wondered which one to choose. The Badaling section is beautiful, half restored and very popular amongst Chinese visitors but I chose the Mutianyu section which is said to be the most magnificent, fully restored section. It is more difficult to climb but has wonderful views. What is a little pain when you have waited half your life for this climb right?

So, on a warm Spring day in April, I joined a group tour to climb the Mutianyu section of the great wall which is about 1.5 hours from Beijing. We were (See Photos and more)...http://www.newsmakersng.com/a-taste-of-asia-nigerian-woman-finally-slays-the-earth-dragon/

Crime / Who The Cap Fits: Meet New Lagos Police Boss, Kayode Egbetokun by Atandakk: 6:20pm On Jan 14, 2019

Amid rising security challenges in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial honeypot, police authorities have handed the state over to an officer who knows its every nook and cranny like the back of his hand.

Acting Commissioner of Police (CP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is however not your everyday police officer.

Besides being an accomplished crime fighter, Egbetokun is an academic – a Mathematician, Scientist, and Engineer all rolled into one.

He had passed through the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Delta State University (DELSU) and the Lagos State University (LASU).

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris believes that the crime-fighting mathematician will figure out a solution to the rising crime rate in Lagos.

Tough as old boots, Egbetokun was the second officer to head the elite crime-fighting apparatus known as Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, from 2005 to 2007, after the pioneer commander, the late Tunde Sobulo.

A new salary structure with rent subsidy has been approved for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) by the Federal Government, NewsmakersNG exclusively reports.

According to the Presidency, the approval took effect from November 1, 2018, and will be funded from the treasury, indicating that policemen will have a merry Christmas.

News of the new package, coming 10 years after the late President Umaru Yar’Adua swelled the pockets of policemen, was conveyed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris through a letter from the Office of the Executive Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes & Wages Commission, High Chief Richard Onwuka Egbule.

In January 2008, an increment was ordered by Yar’Adua which moved the minimum wage of policemen from N6000 to N26, 000.

A cell of international fraudsters fleecing depositors of millions of dollars at banks across the world have been uncovered at a hideout in Ajah area of Lagos.

Targeting accounts with big limits of between $1million and $5million, the fraudsters, allegedly led by one Remijus Ekpe, were found to have swept huge sums from depositors’ funds using cloned websites of the Central Bank of Nigeria, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Union Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and those of American financial institutions including Chase Bank, USAA, and Wells Fargo & Company (WFC).

The cyber-crime syndicate, with foreign partners, was located and infiltrated by detectives at the Anti-fraud Unit of the Force Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (FCIID) Alagbon Close, Lagos, led by CP Dan Okoro, an officer with a reputation for cracking hard cases including murder and financial fraud.

According to Okoro, the fraudsters were working with insiders at the banks to obtain account and credit card details to defraud their victims.

Through what they called a coded advanced undercover investigation and high-tech forensic, the police found that the fraudsters targeted $130million in a particular bank account after receiving information from insiders at the bank.

“These frauds are going on and the banks are not informing members of the public, the customers, and innocent depositors,” Okoro said.

In one instance, a victim was fleeced of $1million which members of the syndicate shared using what they called 40-20-20-20 formula.

The battleground for the Oyo State governorship seat in 2019 is set with the emergence of candidates from two leading parties.
Today the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) picked former CBN deputy governor, Mr Ademola Adelabu as its candidate, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) settled for Mr Seyi Makinde, a businessman.
Both parties held governorship primaries today.
The governorship battle may, however, be a three horse race between the top parties in the state, with the African Democratic Congress getting set to present its candidate on Thursday. The status of other parties including Labour Party, Accord, Kowa, Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Action Democratic Party (ADP) is not yet clear.
Five APC aspirants stepped down for Adelabu to emerge almost unopposed. The aspirants who stepped down during the primaries were Dr. Babalola Owolabi, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe and Olusola Ayandele.
Niyi Akintola (SAN) was the last to step down, a decision he took reluctantly.
Announcing his withdrawal from the race at the venue, Akintola said: “I feel cheated.”
He added, “I have not really benefitted anything from my struggle. I am taking...http://www.newsmakersng.com/governorship-battle-apc-pdp-flag-bearers-emerge-in-oyo/

The Anti-Fraud Unit of the Force Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Alagbon Close, Lagos, bared its fangs today as it unmasked two men held over N118million fraud.

Sending a strong message to fraudsters, the new Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit, Mr Damian Ikem Okoro, revealed that his men now have what it takes to track all manners of fraudsters operating in the country.

“Those who engage in fraud and fraud-related activities must watch out,” Okoro said. “Those who hack accounts, intercept letters, emails from personal and corporate domains, those who are changing account numbers and addresses should stop forthwith or be arrested. We have the wherewithal, now, to trace and track persons who are into these criminalities.”

He told reporters how a fake army officer was caught after allegedly defrauding a wine importer of N100million. He also revealed how a man who claimed to be a pastor allegedly duped a widow of N18million in a land scam at Ibeju-Lekki.

According to the CP, the wine dealer identified as Mr Obinna Francis was swindled of N100million while he was trying to recover N77million paid to a supplier who failed to deliver the goods.

After several failed attempts over a period, a man who identified himself as a Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army offered to assist him with the recovery and also get him registered with big companies, but ended up making various monetary demands until the victim could bear it no more.

Segun Atanda/

Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, today bemoaned the level of support for the ongoing war against corruption, as he gave an account of his stewardship at an interactive session in Lagos.

Magu, who told media practitioners and representatives of the Movement against Corruption at the parley that EFCC had sent two governors to jail and recovered money in various currencies running into over N107.9Billion this year, said, “You have not seen anything yet. We have not touched 10 per cent of the corruption going on, and we don’t have the capacity to deal with it. EFCC does not have the capacity to do all the trial. Other law enforcement agencies must equally join to fight against corruption.”
He gave the breakdown of the figures as N106, 516, 222,383.7, $1, 635, 925. 81 (N592, 303, 356), £629,193. 65 (N763, 076, 428.4) and €25,575 (N10, 849, 110.4).

According to Magu, some individuals being investigated over alleged involvement in oil deals running into $6billion are now trying to sell their properties abroad.

He revealed that EFCC has signed memoranda of understanding with the United Arab Emirates and Mauritius in its efforts to recover looted assets.

He expressed the hope that EFCC would surpass the record of 189 convictions achieved in 2017, going by over 158 convictions secured between January and August this year.

He also mentioned that politicians defecting from one party to another would not be shielded from prosecution by the anti-graft agency.

The Brazilian government has given Yoruba a pride of place among foreign languages spoken in the country.

NewsmakersNG was told in an exclusive interview with the Brazilian minister of culture, Dr Sérgio Sá leitão at the weekend in Brazil that the government has introduced the compulsory study of African History and Yoruba language into the primary and secondary schools curriculum.

The minister spoke at an event where the Institute of African Studies, University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil paraded important dignitaries including Nigerian artists and historians, as well as professors of arts and African studies at a lecture on the importance of Yoruba language in the Brazilian culture and tradition.

According to him, the inclusion of African History and Yoruba Language in the curriculum would help bring the closeness of the African Brazilian people to their roots and thus encourage the understandings of the language among other important languages in Brazil apart from Portuguese which is the official language.

The minister also mentioned the role played by Brazil during the festival of arts and culture, ‘FESTAC 77’, held in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977; the constant intercultural programmes between Nigeria and Brazil; the annual carnival of Arts, music and cultural displays featuring prominent African artist and Yoruba writers such as Yinka Shonibare, Adeyinka Olaiya, El Anatsui among many others, including the highly respected Yoruba writer, Professor Wande Abimbola.

Speaking at the event, Peruvian Nobel laureate, Prof. Mário Vargas Llosa also made mention of the African community in Peru where the African Peruvians are settled till date.

Vargas Llosa, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, is known as one of Latin America’s most significant novelists and essayists, and one of the leading writers of his generation.
According to Vargas Llosa, Yoruba people and their culture have helped the universe, IFA has proven his existence in the beings of mankind right from the inception and IFA is still very much alive and needs to be recognized even more than it is today.

According to Prof Mário Vargas, the Yoruba language should no longer be approached as an ethnic language but a universal language that is alive in culture and tradition of the Africans and her roots around the universe.

Speaking in Yoruba and Portuguese, Prof Katiuscia Ribeiro of the Institute of African Studies drew attention to the African philosophical practices introducing the constant representation of the Yoruba culture and religion in the Brazilian traditional beliefs.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the Yoruba traditional religion today comes after the Catholic practices as the most improving religious practices in the South American country.
