Celebrities / COVID-19 Claims Legendary Old School Nigerian Pop Star …kills Ofege’s Dream by Atandakk: 8:33am On Apr 19, 2020
NewsmakersNG

Ololade Adeyanju/

Nigeria has lost a part of her Pop history to COVID-19 with the death of Paul Alade, a member of the Ofege Band that ruled the airwaves in the early 70s.

NewsmakersNG learnt that Alade died in Oakland, California, where he was a teacher.

Alade was the bassist in Ofege, the musical band formed by teenagers from St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Ikoyi, in Lagos. It has remained Nigeria’s most outstanding school boys’ band of all time.

They recorded several evergreen songs including Whizzy Ilabo, Ofoge, and Burning Jungle.

The boys, who recently announced on Facebook that they were planning a comeback, were largely influenced in the 70s by the guitar solos of Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Francis Rossi, and the criss-cross rhythms of Osibisa. They were also influenced at home by the music of ‘BLO’ (Berkley Jones, Laolu Akins and Mike Odumosu), ‘Monomono’ (led by Joni Haastrup), The Funkees, and Ofo The Black Company.

The band’s debut album, ‘Try and Love’, recorded while the boys were still in high school (average age of 16) reportedly sold over a million copies. It was originally recorded and released in 1973. Due to their vibrant combo of sweet harmonies, hooks and fuzz, they would become one of the most legendary Nigerian groups of all time, with expressive sales and national stardom.

They recorded four albums before breaking up in 1978.

Ofege Band was made up of: Melvin Noks – Lead Vocals/Rhythm; Paul Alade on Bass Guitar; Mike Meme on Drums; Soga Benson – Lead/Solo Guitar; Felix Ijeh on Rhythm/Tenor Guitar; Dapo Olumide on Keyboards, and Felix Inneh was the Percussionist.

A Nigerian air traveller has taken to Facebook to share her experience after an encounter with customs officers at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

Adaeze Udenzi, who came into the country on a British Airways flight from London, expressed shock at the treatment she received after her personal effects were seized at the entry point.
Here’s her post:

“Good afternoon my dear friends! Hope we are keeping well. I want to share my experience yesterday morning at the Abuja International Airport so you all are in the know of what is going on in our country, NIGERIA.

“I arrived Abuja from London yesterday October 18, 2019, at about 4.30 am with ONE pair of trainers and ONE mini boy bag bought at the duty-free shop in Heathrow (Please see pictures below). For the records, I am a banker. I am not a trader.

“To my shock, Customs at Abuja airport headed by one Ms Essien and T. Abdulrahman said these do not qualify as personal effects and calculated duty payment of about N175,000 for me to pay. Most shocking to me was that I was the only passenger on that flight BA 083 from London that was singled out for this treatment.

“My question now is, what are Nigerians able to buy when they travel? Ms Essien says that Nigerians are only entitled to N50,000 worth of goods. Everything above N50,000 is considered luxury and dutiable.

“I pointed out to her that someone who had shoes had just been released by the same Customs without any charge and to my shock, she said that...

The police in Lagos won a battle of wits at the weekend when a UBER driver reported his car stolen but turned out to be the thief.

The 39-year-old driver, Ademola Quadri almost got away with the crime, but the Divisional Police Officer at Igando, CSP Taiwo Kasumu, was smarter.

According to the Lagos State police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, Quadri reported at Igando Police Station on July 1, 2019, that three armed men snatched his Toyota Corolla car marked SMK 732 BR that is a property of Pinehill Leasing Ltd.

Elkana said that after listening to the driver’s story, the DPO became suspicious and quickly “activated credible intelligence network following up on call details and relevant messages of Ademola Quadri who was not aware his transactions were being monitored. More facts emerged when a message of N560, 000 entered his phone with a follow-up message demanding to have the car after making part payment”.

Quadri who has been arrested with his accomplice for raising a false alarm on car snatching with intent to cover their crime allegedly confessed to the commission of the crime during interrogations and he had led detectives to Ijegun area of Ikotun where the purported snatched vehicle was kept pending full payment.

Elkana stated: “The police arrested two other suspects namely, Uche Sunday “m” 32 years old, the marketer who claimed to have negotiated the purchase of the car online from and one other, name withheld suspected to be an innocent buyer. Crime fighting and investigations in Nigeria is a male dominated world.

So, it was a surprise when a woman was appointed as Head of the busiest State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (SCIID) in Africa’s most populous nation handling hundreds of cases.

The appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Yetunde Longe marked the first time a woman would be in charge at the SCIID on MAK Smith Street (formerly known as Panti), in Yaba, Lagos, since it was established in 1977. The Department has actually existed for over 70 years starting as a Regional CID.

Decency and efficiency are the two words that would adequately define DCP Longe.

Keeping a tradition of excellence instituted by retired CP Olayinka Balogun, who headed and transformed the SCIID between 2005 and 2007, DCP Longe has ultimately shown that women are just as capable of leading armies and nations as men are.

She has added increased cosmetics to the face of the SCIID environment and much substance to the operations of the various sections under her, which includes: Homicide, Anti-Robbery, Anti-Fraud, X-Squad, Legal and Human Rights.

Here’s another in a series of epic thrillers from Nigeria’s most travelled woman, Jazzy Jess. Her adventure stories in Asia began with the experience she had climbing the Great Wall of China. Now, she’s telling NewsmakersNG readers about her trip to the Forbidden City in central Beijing.

Jazzy Jess/

When I first visited China, the “Forbidden City” was not really on my list. I had seen it mentioned but I really wanted to visit Macau (the Las Vegas of the East), drive to Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, climb the wall of China, visit the Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium and eat Peking Duck in Beijing. I did all of that.

The decision to travel alone was tough. It was my first time and I did not know what to expect. Neither did I speak the languages. I had wonderful friends who painstakingly prepared me for my trip to their country. They even prepared a deck of flashcards with comments like “I am going to Wangfujing Street; Where is the ferry to Hong Kong? Where is the train station?” and the names of all my hotels in Mandarin and Cantonese. Culture / Exclusive: Sango Invoked As Brazil 2019 Carnival Celebrates Alaafin Of Oyo by Atandakk: 8:22pm On Mar 04, 2019

The Alaafin of Oyo (Iku Baba Yeye), Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, was today honoured in Brazil at the ongoing annual carnival for arts and culture.

The Oyo Empire was also celebrated and the spirit of Sango invoked at the outing of the Salgueiros Escola de Samba in Sapucaí, Rio de Janeiro.

Sango’s proverbial Axé of Justice was beautifully sculpted to suit the colours of the deity who, according to Yoruba history was the third Alaafin of Oyo. The seat of the King of Oyo was highly decorated along with the constructed moving stage. Participants sang and chanted incantations in the Yoruba language to describe the sovereignty of the Oyo Empire.

They also dabbled into a controversial subject as stories were told in their songs describing Alaafin of Oyo as the number one in the Yoruba Kingdom, the legitimate representation of Oodua, the one that ruled after his father.

The homage was made as credit to the Yoruba kingdom and the Orishas that influenced the culture and tradition of the African-Brazilian people since the end of the trans-atlantic slave trade in 1882.

The songs, sculptural representations of Sango at Sapucaí described Orisha Sango as God of Justice and a one-time Alaafin of Oyo.

The case between some Lagos journalists and other claimants and the President, National Association of Women Journalists, Ifeyinwa Omowole, Deji Elumoye, Tosin Odusola, Primewaterview Holdings and NUJ was heard today at the Lagos Multidoor ADR, at Igbosere.

At the hearing, the mediator, Mrs Dupe Ogunsanwo, urged all interested parties to appear at the next sitting in their own interest in order to find an amicable resolution to the case.

Out of the six defendants, only the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was present while the duo of Omowole and Elumoye were represented by Barrister Yinka Kalejaye with no one from Primewaterviews Holdings of Tunji Ogunwusi, under whose chairmanship the project began.

When Mrs Ogunsanwo urged that the presence of the key individuals involved is very important, Kalejaye claimed that Omowole and Elumoye could not appear in person because they now work in Abuja.

Mrs Ogunsanwo strongly advised that it would be in their own interest to appear in person on March 13, 2019.

Meanwhile, at the last sitting in January, Elumoye told the...http://www.newsmakersng.com/nuj-nawoj-housing-fraud-court-summons-ogunwusi-omowole-elumoye-odusola-adjourns-sitting/

President Muhammadu Buhari was quickly shielded today by security agents in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, when missiles flew towards podium as he raised the hand of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer for the governorship election, Mr Dapo Abiodun.

The programme was brought to an abrupt end as the President and other party leaders were being stoned by members of APM who are Abiodun’s rival after the Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun had washed the parties’ dirty linens in the public at the rally where he was openly condemned by the former governor of Osun State, Abdulrauf Aregbesola.
