NIGERIAN TROOPS KILL OVER 120 BOKO HARAM FIGHTERS
Published on Friday, 12 September 2014 18:22
Written by Hamza Idris and Ibrahim Sawab, Maiduguri

*Suicide bomber killed, Cameraman killed
*Confiscated rifles, cars taken to Maimalari Barracks.

Nigerian soldiers today recorded what many described as "landslide victory" by killing over 120 Boko Haram insurgents in an encounter in Konduga town.

Konduga, situated 40 kilometers along Bama road is a gateway to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

In the last two weeks, sources said the Boko Haram insurgents have been making frantic efforts to attack the state capital.

A credible security source said the encounter in Konduga lasted between 4am and 12 noon today.

According to him, " This was the happiest outing by troops of the 7 Division in recent times.

"Almost all the terrorists that mobilized for the Konduga attack were killed. Two of them were arrested and the simple fact is that the Boko Haram suffered a major defeat this time around. They came when our men were ready for them.

"All the vehicles they came with were either shelled or confiscated. About six of the vehicles have been taken to the Maimalari Barracks so far and more are on the way.

"Our troops also recovered dozens of rifles and explosives. A suicide bomber was also intercepted and killed.

"A cameraman that they came with them in order to cover their planned attrocity was also killed and the remnant of the camera recovered," he said.

huh Like seriously.

I wonder some times you know, is it that goodluck jonathan iis so akin to failure that even average nigerians now meeasure or regard failure as manageable success?.

Just imagine wat u wrote up there Mr. sad

It's shocking.

(* you people will never see beyond 'Goodluck Jonathan is our brother* )

It's like flogging a dead horse to wake up
What is Goodluck doing in my comment, where did I mention Goodluck? You have been asking about the N4 trillion defense budget and how it was spent. Before you point your fingers at anybody start with Dasuki. Also, boko haram is not governing any zone in your neck of woods yet. So, the N4 trillion is working just fine. The entire budget spent on the war against boko haram is a success. Shekau is not your sultan, abi? are we missing something here?

What has the son of the SouthSouth done with over 4 trillion naira in 4 years of the budgetary allocation to buy weapons and machinery to fight BH?

Have the weapons and machines been bought? And if not why?.

Why are there stories of corruption aand lack of funds by those at the fronlines?

Why the need to borrow a huge 1billion dollars after spending 4trillion with nothing to show for it?.

Is that not sabotage?

Is the money meant to be siphoned while nigerians and soldiers aree slaughteered?

We need answers from the son of the South South?.
You keep talking about 4 trillion, direct that question at the NSA. He is the man responsible for military procurement across board. How much do you think it takes to deployed men around the clock in NE Nigeria? How much is the army spending on petrol alone?. Review the armed forces budget, the numbers are out there in black and white.

Secondly the so called 4 trillion cuts across the entire national security platform. Police DSS, Civil defense, all the branches of our armed forces, deployed in almost 25 states across this country, carrying out one operation or the other, are all included in your N4 trillion numbers. These are monies they spent in the last 4.5years.

By the way boko haram is not governing the northwest/east yet, just like the Taliban in Afghanistan or ISIS in the middle east. Till that happens, the expenses are a success.
HealthEbola Evacuations To US Greater Than Previously Known by atlwireles(op): 11:09pm On Sep 10, 2014
Transports have included patients exposed to virus, air ambulance operator says

An undisclosed number of people who’ve been exposed to the Ebola virus — not just the four patients publicly identified with diagnosed cases — have been evacuated to the U.S. by an air ambulance company contracted by the State Department.
“We moved a lot of other people who had an exposure event,” said Dent Thompson, vice president of Phoenix Air Group. “Many times these people are just fine, they just had an exposure. But you have to treat it as though the disease is present.”

How many exposed patients have been flown from West Africa to the U.S.? Thompson said medical privacy laws and his company’s contract with the State Department prevent him from revealing the figure.

“I’m not avoiding it,” Thompson told Yahoo News. “I’m just not allowed to talk about it.”

Five weeks ago, medical missionary Dr. Kent Brantly became the first Ebola patient to be treated in the U.S. He and fellow missionary Nancy Writebol were nursed back to health in a special isolation unit at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta and later released. Dr. Rick Sacra and an unidentified doctor who arrived on Tuesday are currently being treated in the U.S.

The State Department confirmed the four known Ebola patient transports but couldn’t provide details on any exposure evacuations to the United States. Phoenix Air, they said, is under contract because of its expertise.
An unnamed State Department official said “every precaution is taken to move the patient safely and securely, to provide critical care en route, and to maintain strict isolation upon arrival in the United States.”

Thompson said Phoenix Air has flown 10 Ebola-related missions in the past six weeks.

“Not everything we do is [related to] a sick person,” he said, adding that the company has also flown supplies. “We do basically whatever needs to be done.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is operating an around-the-clock Ebola emergency operations center, did not immediately respond to an email seeking information about the exposure patient transports.

On Monday, President Barack Obama, who has called the outbreak a U.S. national security priority, pledged more U.S. assistance to West Africa. The White House recently requested $30 million more from Congress to help the CDC’s efforts with the crisis.

With multiple government and aid organizations trying to tackle the unprecedented epidemic, Thompson predicts his team will be flying more precautionary patients back to the U.S.

“There will be a certain number of people who, through no fault of their own, will have an exposure event, and they are immediately identified and immediately extracted,” he said.

Phoenix Air’s modified Gulfstream III jets are “literally intensive care units with wings,” Thompson said. He said even evacuees without a confirmed Ebola diagnosis are placed in an isolation chamber for the 12- to 14-hour flight from West Africa to the U.S.

“You can never, ever let your safety guards down,” he said.

The Georgia-based air transport company got involved in the latest Ebola crisis when the Christian humanitarian group Samaritan’s Purse recruited it to evacuate Brantly and Writebol. The State Department was involved in the logistics, but the trips were funded by Samaritan’s Purse.

Since then, Thompson said, Phoenix Air has solely been under contract with the State Department.

“It became evident that we could no longer treat any of these flights as a private or commercial flight,” said Thompson, declining to divulge the specifics of the government contract.

Brantly, Writebol and the latest patient have been treated at Emory University in Atlanta. Last week, Sacra was flown to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Those hospitals, plus the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula, Montana, have specially-equipped biocontainment units built in collaboration with the CDC. However, the CDC has said any U.S. hospital following infection control recommendations and isolating a patient in a private room is capable of safely managing an infected patient.

Thompson declined to say where patients who have just been exposed to Ebola have been flown to in the U.S.

“They all go to a hospital and they monitor them,” he said. “If they do develop it, then they treat them. And, fingers crossed, they’re going to walk out the way Brantly and Nancy Writebol walked out.”

How can an operation of such magnitude take place and no soldier will die?

Kudos to the NA if this story is true.

Let them end this shiiit once and for all before the insurgency becomes part and parcel of our national life like we have some African countries, Pakistan and Syria.

Never knew Nigeria will one day grapple with insurgency for so long.

PoliticsEmir Debunks Reports That He Fled His Palace In Mubi - by atlwireles(op): 6:33pm On Sep 10, 2014
Yola - The Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isa, has debunked media reports that he fled his palace in Mubi as a result of threat of attack by Boko Haram insurgents.

Spokesman of the Emir and the Danruwata Mubi, Chief John Elias, made the statement on Wednesday in Yola during a press briefing.

He said that the emir, who is state Amirul Hajj left Mubi on Sunday for Yola to attend a meeting to prepare for the 2014 Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

“We are dismayed by media reports regarding the emir’s departure from Mubi for Yola on Sept. 7, 2014.

“Let me put the record straight here; the Emir did not leave Mubi for Yola to escape from the insurgents.

“He left Mubi to attend a meeting with members of the committee for the 2014 pilgrimage to the Holy land,” he said.

Elias said the Boko Haram insurgents did not attack Mubi as the reports claimed, adding that those who fled the town did so as a result of fear of attack.

Meanwhile, the senator representing Adamawa North senatorial district Alhaji Bindow Jibrilla, has expressed sympathy with the people of the state over the recent insurgent attack on Michika and Madagali. (NAN)

PoliticsAfenifere Rejects Creation Of Additional 30,000 Polling Units By INEC - by atlwireles(op): 11:34pm On Sep 09, 2014
Akure — THE pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, yesterday, rejected the creation of additional 30,000 polling units by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, barely five months to the general elections.
Also, they passed “a vote of no confidence” on the Chairman of the Commission Professor Attahiru Jega, over his ability to conduct a free and fair election next year.
Rising from a five-hour leadership meeting in Akure, the country home of their National Chairman, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the group in a communiqué kicked against the lopsidedness of the electoral umpire in the allocation of polling units to geo-political zones in the country.
Spokesman of the group, Yinka Odumakin, who read the communiqué to newsmen after the meeting said, “the imbalance in the distribution was unacceptable.”
Leaders at the meeting included Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Jelili Adesiyan, Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, former governors of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Chief Segun Osoba, Chiefs Reuben Fasoranti, Olu Falae and Ayo Adebanjo.
Others were Mr. Jimi Agbaje, Sir Michael Koleoso, Chief Kole Omololu, Senator Gbenga Kaka, Professor Akin Onigbinde, Mr. Sina Kawonise, Mr. Segun Ojo, Mr. Tunde Oladapo and Chief Korede Duyile.
Odumakin said: “The meeting took decision on the 30,000 newly created polling unit announced by INEC, and condemned the whole exercise as skewed, in that 21, 000 were allocated to the Northern part of Nigeria, while 8,000 was allocated to the South.
“We found it very curious, for instance, we don’t understand the democratic abracadabra that allowed the Northwest, just one zone in the North, was allocated 9, 906 polling units while the entire South of Nigeria was allocated 8,000 polling units.
“A war ravaged Northeast where people are fleeing was allocated 5, 201 new polling units while the entire South West which is brimming with people, is allocated only 4, 160 additional polling units. The entire South East of Nigeria was allocated 1, 166 new units while FCT alone was allocated 1, 200 units. We do not know of any country in the world where you would change electoral law one year to the election, not to talk of creating additional polling units six months to the election.
“We don’t understand while war-torn areas are now having more polling units than peaceful areas. And more important, how does Jega want to migrate voters who have been given Permanent Voters Cards with existing codes in existing units with the new polling units which had just been created.
“We see the whole exercise as attempt to create rigging at source where 500 votes will return to the units where it was created and more important you create an election dominant manual that Nigerians will continue to fight as we are now fighting lopsidedness we see at House of Representatives and Senate today.
“To this end we reject it in its entirety and we are saying it now. We pass a vote of no confidence in Jega’s capacity to conduct free and fair and credible election if these additional units are not cancelled immediately.

PoliticsFAAN Denies Alleged Syringe Attack On US Air Marshal - by atlwireles(op): 10:46pm On Sep 09, 2014
We’re investigating — FBI
By Hugo Odiogor, Foreign Affairs Edito & Lawani Mikairu
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, yesterday, denied alleged syringe attack on a US Air Marshal at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Sunday, September 7, even as the United States said its Federal Bureau of Investigation was investigating the matter.
Some foreign news media had published a story alleging that a US Federal Air Marshal was assaulted with a syringe containing an unknown substance at Lagos airport.
According to the report, the victim was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 143 which landed in Houston, Monday, from where he was taken to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention where an on-the-scene screening of the victim was conducted and was quarantined.
Reacting to the report, Mr. Yakubu Dati ,General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, said: “The attention of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has been drawn to a story making the rounds, that a US Marshal was assaulted at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
“Following the report, a team from the US Embassy met with the airport Joint Security team, and at their request, viewed footages of the movement of the said marshal captured on our CCTV cameras.”
“Preliminary observation from the CCTV footages did not show evidence of such occurrence. Relevant security agencies have since commenced investigation into the matter.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to assure all air travellers and the general public of our commitment to safety and security of our airports.”
ABC News reported that US law enforcement officials told them “that they were alarmed by the bizarre, unprovoked attack because the assailant was apparently able to inject an unknown substance into the back of one of the air marshal’s arms.”
Meanwhile, the FBI in a statement made available to Vanguard, yesterday, said it was looking into the incident.
The statement said the victim did not show any sign of illness during the flight, but was isolated and transported to a hospital for further testing. The recovered syringe was also taken for further clinical tests. Reports said there was no indication that the Air Marshal and other passengers in the flight were in any danger.
The incident came amid fears that the substance could contain some form of Ebola virus. The Air Marshals are members of the diplomatic staff that travel with airplanes to forestal hijacking and terrorist attack on aircraft. They travel under-cover in plain clothes, which would not make them easily identifiable to the public as security agents. Owing to the nature of their assignment, the Air Marshals are allowed to carry arms as American Law Enforcement agents.
The National President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Jon Adler said there was no intelligence to link the incident with terrorist attack at this point when US personnel were globally on alert ahead of the anniversary of September 2001 terrorist attack on the United States.
There was no official confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs whose officers failed to respond to media enquiries. Nigerian Airport security said there was no official report of the incident.
