Ghana need2012 presidential candidate of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey is calling for a return to military rule as the surest way to accelerate the development of the country. He believes if the nation was under military rule, rampant corruption in the country would not be in existence for the nation to experiencing economic challenges. The leader and Chairman of the GCPP, Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey believes a return to military rule will instill some discipline in Ghanaians who steal the country’s resources for their personal benefit and that of their friends. He also took a swipe at government for mismanaging the economy. According to him, Ghanaians are feed up with the current economic hardship bedeviling the country which he said keeps worsening by the day as he puts the blame squarely at the doorstep of leadership. Dr. Henry Lartey in an interview said the leadership needs to think about an innovative way to deal with corruption to save the country. “Leadership is not rulership. Leadership is not kingship. Leadership is when you have creative mind. Leaders need to think on their feet and bring out sterling ideas to change lives”, he said.s to return to military rule – GCPP leader charges[/b http://www.citifmonline.com/2014/08/04/ghana-needs-to-return-to-military-rule-gcpp-leader-charges/ |

'Dumsor' to linger on as Nigeria cuts gas supply to Ghana The erratic power supply in the country may well linger for a while longer because information available to Joy News indicates the Nigerian government has cut back its supply of gas to the country. Gas supply from Nigeria has been instrumental in running most of the generating plants in the country at a relatively cheaper cost, compared to crude oil. But cuts in the supply means the country would have to struggle to generate enough power to meet demand. Per the arrangement arrived at between the two countries, Nigeria is expected to provide Ghana with around 120 million metric tonnes of gas per day but the West African giants are only supplying around 50 million metric tonnes which is far below expectation. Sources at the Electricity Company of Ghana and GRIDCo told Joy FM the recent cuts in gas supply may account for the frequent power cuts being experienced particularly in the capital. Government officials have time without number promised that the power cuts would soon come to an end but it doesn't look like it will be any time soon. Last week the Volta River Authority announced the load shedding, christened in local parlance as dumsor dumsor will not end any time soon. "We produce just what we are able to consume and therefore if we have to work on a machine, we have to revert to load shedding. "It's not palatable news but we can't be giving promises that are not real," Mr Fletcher told Joy News' Beatrice Adu. ECG also insists it cannot distribute power it does not have and would have to shed load as and when it gets the notification from GRIDCo and VRA. Joy News checks indicate over 240 megawatts of power were shed last Friday with another 300 shed Monday. As if the gas supply cuts is not enough, the Volta River Authority has announced that the repair works on the power producing plants would continue. Joy News' Western Region correspondent Kweku Owusu Peprah said works on the T1, T2 and T3 are progressing steadily. http://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2014/may-6th/dumsor-to-linger-on-as-nigeria-cuts-gas-supply-to-ghana.php |
Ghana has said it will seek financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help strengthen the West African nation's currency. The cedi has fallen 40% against the US dollar this year, making it one of the world's worst-performing currencies. Ghana, once seen as a shining example of economic strength in the region, is also struggling with high inflation. The country last went to the IMF for help in 2009, when it secured a $600m (£360m), three-year aid package. Despite being a major exporter of gold, oil and cocoa, Ghana is struggling with large current account and budget deficits. Last week, the country's finance minister told the BBC the country would fix its currency problems itself and only go to the IMF as a last resort. Many experts see the decision to go to the IMF as the first admission by the government that the economy is in bad shape. 'Meaningful difference' Commentators said the move would force the government to take stronger action to tackle rising deficits and inflation. "An IMF programme is likely to give to investors that additional level of confidence that fiscal consolidation might be pursued more seriously," said Razia Khan at Standard Chartered bank. "However, news of potential talks with the IMF is unlikely to be enough, on its own, to make a meaningful difference to the cedi just yet." Mark Asibey-Yeboah, spokesman for the opposition New Patriotic Party, said the IMF would insist on the government introducing measures to tackle inflation, including a freeze on wages. "But all in all, the benefits will still outweigh the downside, so it's a step in the right direction," he said. |
If this program is actually real, then big shout out to Aregbe. Agriculture remains the most efficient means out of poverty in Nigeria. |
Osun State government has rolled out debit cards to farmers for direct and easy access to farming inputs, which include improved seedlings, pesticide and fertilisers. Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who commenced the debit cards distribution at the official launch of the Farmers’ Input and Credit Support Programme, at the Distribution Centre, AISU, Ede, said the task of arresting and eradicating the scourge of hunger and poverty as well as usher in an era of agriculture-based prosperity for farmers, the people and government will continue to form the fulcrum of his administration. The governor noted that government had brought to bear all technology-based methods for the enhancement of modern agriculture, including the Geographical Information System (GIS) and enumeration of farmers across the state. Aregbesola said his government will vigorously explore more ways of expanding and improving agricultural production and the development of agro-allied industrial base in his second term in office. The debit card will make farming easier for all those interested in embracing farming and remove excruciating burden of loans. “We came up with the aid scheme in order to correct all the anomalies that are inherent in the extant system of agricultural input distribution, while the Credit Support Programme is meant to boost the capacity of stakeholders to play their roles properly towards the development and modernisation of agriculture. “We therefore embarked on a rigourous process of due diligence by carefully and painstakingly conducting enumeration of all farmers in the state. This led to the registration of more than 50,000 farmers all over Osun,” Aregbesola said, expressing confidence on the capacity of the agricultural sector to deliver the goods on the state’s economy, as no wealth can be created sufficiently without the sector. He said: “We are convinced that there is immense potential in agriculture for job creation, wealth generation, food security, and poverty eradication. “We will continue to vigorously explore more ways of expanding and improving our agricultural production and the development of our agro-allied industrial base. “What we are doing today is continuation on the path we have consciously taken since our assumption of office. This is the empowerment of farmers and the development of agriculture for the purpose of making food available in abundance, first for feeding ourselves, then for feeding others and ultimately, the development of agro-industries for job creation and wealth generation for individuals and the government.” In his earlier remarks, Charles Akinola, coordinator, Osun Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Programme (OREAP), noted that the farmers’ input and credit support programme was first of its kind in Nigeria, saying the various assistance of Aregbesola’s administration to the farmers, which included proviso of farming input, land clearing and tractorisation, were aimed at assisting farmers without stress. He said: “The delivering of farming inputs by the government to farmers will in no small measures help in massive food production in the state.” http://businessdayonline.com/2014/08/farmers-get-debit-cards-for-farming-inputs-in-osun |
vicadex07: You're actually very much wrong. It is very difficult to build and quite easy to destroy.Your analogy talks about building a structure? In Nigeria, there is nothing to corruption, because we have, a failed structural foundation. Corruption is just a symptom of that failed structure. |
